  2. Dane & Khotin - "System" (5:23)
  3. Dane - "I Want More" (7:34)
  4. Eddie C - "One For Dane" (4:13)
Review: Canada's foremost re-edit imprint continues to churn out the hits, largely by delivering dub disco and Balearic-tinged interpretations of long forgotten or little-known cuts. Common Edit regulars Dane and Khotin join forces on the A-side, delivering a sweet chunk of boogie-era synthesizer reggae ("Imho"), before heading futher towards peaktime territory with the low-slung, late night AOR disco of "System". Eddie C digs delves into his seemingly bottomless crates of obscurities for inspiration on "I Want More", a gorgeous chunk of piano-laden Balearic disco sweetness. Finally, Dane lights up something medicinal, closes his eyes and delivers the smacked-out, guitar-laden ambient chug of "One For Dane". It's an absolute beauty, if truth be told.

  10. Superprince - "Dependable" (edit) (6:56)
Review: To mark their 50th release, Brooklyn scalpel fiends Razor-N-Tape has put together a triple-pack of tried-and-tested reworks from some of the scene's heaviest hitters. It's as strong as you'd expect, with highlights including the heavyweight, delay-laden disco-funk brilliance of Dimitri From Brooklyn's "Hooked On This Feeling" (a dub disco revision of an old Frank Hooker jam by Dimitri From Paris), the Clavinet-driven, piano-laden peak-time hustle of Joey Negro's "Let's Get Ornery", the Clarinet and trumpet-sporting hedonism of Jacques Renault's emotive and heart-tugging "Said I Would" and the screaming, hands-aloft rush of Superprince's "Dependable". Fittingly, label co-fouder JKriv delivers one of the standouts, a rolling revision of an Italo-style, arpeggio-driven delight titled "Lovin' Lasers".

Eyes Of Glass (reissue) (12" + insert)
Cat: DE 144. Rel: 23 Jan 17
  1. Eyes Of Glass (vocal) (6:55)
  2. Eyes Of Glass (instrumental) (7:13)
Review: To accompany their re-release of East Wall's superb 1991 debut album, Silence, Dark Entries has decided to put out the Italian band's forgotten debut release, 1985 single "Eye of Glass". Tending towards the darker end of the Italo-disco spectrum, but blessed with typically cheery synthesizer melodies and skewed female vocals, it's a record that seems far more inspired by the earlier British new wave synth-pop movement than pleasing the clubs of Rome or Rimini. The vocal version is accompanied by a subtly different instrumental, which includes waves of warm synths and offers more prominence to the band's bubbly electronics, throbbing arpeggio bassline, and delay-laden drum machine hits.

Review: Given their contributions to the label over the years, it's perhaps fitting that Editorial's special Record Store Day release comes from experienced re-editors and bespoke mash-up merchants Ed Wizard and Disco Double Dee. There's plenty of floor-friendly fire to be found lurking on the EP, from the pumped-up, electrofunk-era disco-funk bounce of "The Need Inside", to the solo-laden funk shuffle of sax-laden groover "Dat Funk" and hip-hop tempo heaviness of "Lemonade", whose dusty breakbeats will delight hip-hop DJs. The undoubted highlight, though, is the organ-sporting peak-time chug of "Layover Blues", which is also given a dazzling, funk-fuelled house makeover by sometime Mr Saturday Night label contributor Nebraska.

  2. Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee - "Cantina" (6:21)
  3. Hotmood - "Chico Shake" (6:08)
  4. Hotmood - "El-Artista" (7:04)
Review: Editorial's 28th vinyl outing is a split affair, with label mainstays Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee handling the A side and Hotmood holding court on the B. Interestingly, the standout of Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee's side is a wonderfully groovy, synth-sporting deep house re-make of "Shades of Blue" by Sheffield-based Leicester Lad Scott Moncrieff AKA Thatmanmonkz, though the head-nodding, toe-tapping chunk of jazz-funk/instrumental soul that follows it, "Cantina", is also rather good. As for Hotmood, they provide some instant party-starting vibes via the low-slung disco-funk-meets-house loop jam "Chico Shake", before exploring breezier dancefloor pastures via the flute-sporting goodness of "El Arista". In a word: solid.

Review: The latest release on admirable Detroit institution Rocksteady Disco comes from Eddie Logix, a producer who has been around the fringes of the Motor City scene for some time. There's much to admire on his label debut, from the tasty Latin horns and tropical house grooves of opener "Que Locos", to the skewed drums, dub disco bass and Steely Dan style guitar solos of superb closing cut "Bottle Rocket". Sandwiched in between you'll find two similarly tasty slabs: the delay-laden Latin jazz-house headiness of "Sunday Palaver" and the more electronic sounding deep house goodness of "Baby Girl".

  1. Persia - "Inch By Inch" (7:32)
  2. Parlet - "Principle" (9:07)
Review: Prepare to strap yourself into for a super smooth ride on this 11th helping of steamy disco pleasure from Edit & Dub Recordings out of Tokyo. The icy cold vocals on Persia's "Inch By Inch" ride over feathered snares and rubbery kicks that are simply irresistible. Noodling synth funk and subtle cosmic rays all add lushness to a most succulent groove. The second a-side is "Principle" from Parlet and is another intimate and steamy disco number that worms its way into your affections with muted oboes, smooth-sliding grooves and a lead sax that has you hot under the collar.

  4. I Just Wanna (Spend A Little Time With You) (instrumental mix) (6:58)
Review: For their latest trick, Yam Who's Riot label has decided to offer up a brand new edition of Alton Edwards' 1981 UK electrofunk classic "I Just Wanna (Spend A Little Time With You)". You'll find Edwards' superb original vocal version on the flip, where his part whispered, part sung vocals rise above thickset, mind-altering synth-bass, drum machine beats and some seriously punchy horn lines. The obligatory 21st century updates come courtesy of Full Intention man Michael Gray, who delivers a suitably pumped up boogie-house vocal revision before dropping a similarly chunky dub that wisely makes much of the original bassline and Edwards' whispered vocal passages.

Cat: BIKE 021. Rel: 25 Aug 20
  1. Elado - "Hipos" (4:13)
  2. Eddie C - "Crazy Heart" (4:09)
Review: Eddie C's Red Motorbike journeys on with another tasty 7" morsel from the boss himself, this time split with Elado. That is who goes first on the guitar licked, Americana tinged, disco dripped "Hipos" which is a perfect tune for gazing off at a distant sunset as you sway to and fro on an outdoor dance floor. Eddie C's "Crazy Heart" chugs a it harder, with busy melodic phrases riding up and down the scale over chunky drums. As always with Red Motorbike, this is grown up music for grown up dance floors, but that's not to say it isn't hella fun.

  1. Enzo Elia - "Alles Paletti!" (6:45)
  2. Apotheke - "War" (Enzo Elia Calabro edit) (7:34)
Review: Berlin's excellent Black Pearl Records returns with its unsurprisingly charismatic vintage flavours, this time thanks to an original from Enzo Elia and a rework of 1970's stoners Apotheke. Elia's "Alles Paletti!" is the perfect, swinging disco bomb that is pretty much composed of one single loop; the trick here is that our man has found the code to the secret 4 bar formula...and what an addictive groove it is! Elia reworks Apotheke's "War" on the B-side, and the result is an even more dance-friendly version of the original cut from the 70's - what an absolute stunner. A highly recommended EP.

Cat: SOHOT 4. Rel: 09 Jun 20
  1. Soho Phaze (5:37)
  2. Soho Nights (6:22)
Review: Mysterious UK artist Elixia released just one record, and it was this one back in 1983. Utterly futuristic and filled with mad studio trickery, it's a deconstructed disco tune with myriad filters, phasers and multi-track trickery, jazz-funk instrumentals and whistles, bells, the lot. It's a rather under the radar track that deserves more attention and now gets it thanks to this full reissue. Both versions bare plenty of the same elements, but each one is arranged in a different fashion and with different effects playing out on each. Drop this one and watch the crowd erupt.

  3. Don't Be Sabi Say (5:32)
  4. I Wish I Knew The Words (5:30)
Review: Last year, Marcel Vogel dusted down his Em Vee edit alias for the first time in three years, serving up a tasty four-pack of reworks for OYE's ongoing Edits series. It clearly inspired him to make more reworks, because now he's popped up on Razor-N-Tape with another fine selection of scalpel revisions. He begins by reworking a tongue-in-cheek chunk of disco silliness rich in spacey Moog lines and wonky vocals ("You Move Me"), before tweaking and rearranging a superb chunk of Latin-tinged tropical disco ("Spreading Energy"). "Don't Be Sabi Say" is a high-tempo chunk of Afrobeat/Afro-disco fusion full of ear-catching Nigerian vocals and bustling electric piano riffs, while "I Wish I Knew The Words" is a cheeky revision of an obscure Japanese synth-boogie number.

Piece Of Class

  1. Piece Of Class (4:53)
  2. Star Of The Disco (4:18)
Review: Astonishingly, original copies of Energize's 1979 private press single "Piece of Class" have changed hands for over 500 quid online. Helpfully, Rain & Shine have decided to save us all a few bob by slinging out this licensed reissue. The title track is something of a bustling disco-funk gem - a genuinely wonderful fusion of hazy vocals, dueling horn solos, spacey synthesizer flourishes and driving bass guitar. B-side "Star of the Disco" is an even more up-tempo affair, with mazy saxophone solos, rasping horn stabs and starry jazz-funk keys riding a walking bassline and high-octane disco drums.

  1. Track 1
  2. Track 2
  3. Track 3
Review: Over the course of 12 months from the summer of June 2011 onwards, the mysterious Eros offered a portal back to the raw, decadent & formative birth of club music through 3 superb 12" releases. Fast forward three years and Eros has raised once again, Lazarus style, with the commencement of a new series that veers away from the electronic focus of those previous records to the outright flamboyant styles of disco. All three tracks here are untitled, so the disco scholars out there will have plenty of fun seeking out the source material but really the dancers will have more reacting to these cuts. Track 2 in particular features some sublime phasing and edits.

Review: Since first appearing last summer the label has retained its air of self imposed anonymity, while keeping the spotters busy with a supremely rewarding approach to digging up and re-editing "lost classics from the raw, decadent and formative birth of club music" in a manner befitting of modern dancefloors. People who class themselves as knowledgeable on the sounds that pumped out from the mixing desk of Ron Hardy at the height of his popularity probably won't have much trouble placing the source material for the four tracks here, but the genius of the EROS series is the way they've been edited which betrays a mastery and understanding of the music a legion of soundcloud dwelling hopefuls could only dream of. As the series' final release, it's hard not to think of the often stated platitude that all good things must come to an end.

Review: New York City-based trio Escort are back for the first time since their Animal Nature LP from 2015. Their new track "Slide" was co-written with NYC soul artist Denitia and drives you gently with this west coast influenced roller produced by Eugene Cho and Jkriv - and featuring Adeline's wonderful vocal delivery. We absolutely adored this slick and low slung boogie-down number. For something more uplifting (and with dancefloor dynamics) you can try the classic '70s disco explosion of "Ride" (feat Brian Jackson) on the flip, which calls to mind the classic vibe of masters like Salsoul, Moulton Studios et al.

  2. Take You To A Secret Place (dub mix)
  3. Take You To A Secret Place (Kuniyuki Hard remix)
  4. Take You To A Secret Place (Angophora remix)
Review: Not An Animal are known for their heated takes on the art of disco-sampling house music, and Ess O Ess is one of the key factors in defining that sound. This comes through in spades on Take You To A Secret Place, where the title track comes marching out atop a deadly bassline that will cut through any mix to get the people freaking out. The dub mix is equally deadly, flying a generous dose of cosmic sparkle into the mix without losing the punch in the original production. Kuniyuki Hard takes a daring approach that slows the track down to a creep and emphasises space and tension. The Angophora version is even more drastic, seemingly stripping all the recognisable elements of the track out and leaving behind a plaintive thread of ambient instrumentation.

Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Kinfolk, but the broad-sweeping label with cosmic chuggery in its bones is back with this powerful dose from Ess O Ess and Saulrichards. "Totem" is an epic track that rolls around in the muck somewhere between shoegaze extravagance, post-rock heaviness and psyched-out electronics. The "Swamp Crawl" version of the track keeps the guitars bedded deep within the mix, but there's space for more expressive synth work. Hardway Brothers take the track on a similarly rockist journey, but take their time building up to a climax. Otologic wrap things up with a deadly dub that will have low tempo trippers rubbing their hands with delight.

Review: Balearic disco maestro Max Essa has named his latest EP in honour of "Barkhan Dunes" - those wind created, crescent shaped sand dunes often found in deserts. Quite how this fits with the music on offer isn't explained, though the Balearic-minded music offered up is excellent. Check first "The Price You Pay (For Loving That Way)", an arpeggio-driven slab of sun-kissed nu-disco/Balearic house fusion rich in life-affirming Rhodes chords, twinkling synth lines and delay-laden saxophone solos. "Kites At Nemoto Beach" is a gently unfurling ambient soundscape full of drowsy vocal harmonies, while closing cut "Sundowning" sees Essa wrap glistening guitars and thickset synth bass around a bubbly mid-tempo drum machine rhythm.

Review: In the space of a year Bahnsteig 23 has positioned itself as a label of note with a strong run of 12"s that draw on a rich spread of influences from cosmic disco to world music to provide a little more spice in your dancefloor selections. Portland's Elliot Thomas takes his Etbonz alias out for its first proper outing here after a split 7" with Dro Carey some years back. This single-sided jam serves to raise the intrigue around the project further still with its dense, organically enhanced production and dreamy atmosphere, keeping the tempo slow and simmering for the early part of the party.

Review: We may not be able to gather to dance outdoors under a blazing sun or a blanket of stars, but there's no harm in a little musical daydreaming. That's what the latest multi-artist Ravenelli Disco Club release is all about: summery escapism that comes with a big dollop of rush-inducing disco release. Ethyene sets the tone with the colourful boogie-house fusion of "Let Love" - all twinkling synth motifs, echoing percussion hits, thickset grooves and hazy vocal samples - before Carlo raises the temperature via some jazzy deep house heaviness in the vein of Derrick Carter's "boompty" era. Over on side B, Hotmood's "Magical Flight" is a surging, string-drenched disco-house roller, while Rees' "The Way You Mood" is a tooled-up take on what sounds like a classic Philadelphia International cut.

Review: Following his recent strong turn on Cocktail D'Amore, Jules Etienne makes a trip back to Apersonal Music with more of that island groove for the smoothest slack-wearers in town. "Free As A Man" is a beautifully laid back but funky offering that speaks to all kinds of good times. Jex Opolis turns in a remix of the track that has a little more bite to suit the later demands of the dancefloor. "Don't Wanna Talk About It" sees Etienne linking up with Disco D and winding all kinds of slick strutting business into his sound, and then "Rhythm For The Garden" heads off into wonderful tribal percussion that serves as a handy tool for DJs who want to get some rich drum sounds into their set.

Review: More good value goodness from the Editorial label, one of the few re-edit focused outfits that manage to retain a high level of consistency. The Funk District kicks things off with a fine re-arrangement of an organ and electric piano-focused chunk of sweaty dancefloor soul ("An Evening With El Diablo"), before Matt Hughes gets busy with some elastic slap bass on flash-fried disco-funk revision "Get Down". Elsewhere, Label regulars Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee dip the tempo on the slow and seductive "Slippin", the Owl stomps his way through the P-funk style heaviness of "Funky Feelin" and Cody Currie offers up a hazy sample-house cut rich in jazzy flourishes and warm electric piano chords.
