  3. Johan Agebjorn/Sally Shapiro/Elitechnique - "Outer Space Woman" (parts 1 & 2)
  4. Johan Agebjorn - "Mega Man II"
Review: Taken from the recent, highly acclaimed 'Milky Disco' compilation on Lo Recordings, 'Spacer Woman' is a scintillating slab of hi-octane,
Italo space-disco. Created by Johan Agebjörn, who was responsible for all the production on Sally Shapiro's 'Disco Romance' album, the
12" includes remixes by Rude 66 and Elitechnique which take it even deeper into space and onto nu-disco dancefloors. Dutch electro
artist Rude 66, with releases on labels like Viewlexx, Bunker and Crème Organization, previously remixed Sally's hit 'I'll Be By Your Side',
receiving plenty of club play from DJs like The Hacker and Tiga. His take on this 12", titled 'Deeper Space Woman', is a slow and deep,
dubby trip which will work well as a start-up for slower DJ sets. Dutch duo Elitechnique, with releases on Clone and Radius and earlier
remixes for Black Devil Disco Club and Alden Tyrell, take the track into a nu-disco dancefloor monster called 'Outer Space Woman' with
additional backing vocals by the Dutch actress Loes. The 12" ends with a wicked sidechain dance version of a computer game track,
'Mega Man II re-mix' by Johan Agebjörn, here without Sally's vocals but with vintage 8bit sounds. Sally Shapiro's debut album 'Disco
Romance' was released in 2007 and received excellent reviews from magazines like Pitchfork Media, Vice, Der Spiegel and XLR8R. It
was recently nominated as 'electronic/dance album of the year' by U.S. Plug Awards and Sally was nominated as 'female artist of the year'.
'Spacer Woman From Mars' was originally intended for 'Disco Romance', but was taken out because of its space rather than love theme.

  1. Arsenii - "Miss Holy Holy"
  2. Shiny Boots - "Susekke"
  3. Emotional Blackmail - "Bottox"
  4. Simple Symmetry - "Danza Sueno"
Review: A brand new imprint from Russia's ever-evolving disco scene. Dipping its fingers into psychedelic, Balearic and boogie pies, it's a superbly curated cut quartet. Let's take a slice... Arsenii's "Miss Holy Holy" is straight out of the late 60s west coast movement. All dreamy and hippy, fans of Paqua will be all over it. Shiny Boots gets sandy feet on the shore of Playa Den Bossa with the synth-tingle Balearic blisser "Susekke" while Emotional Blackmail gets crunk on the dramatic rhythmic textures of the funk-fuelled "Bottox". Simple Symmetry closes the curtains on this consummate launch release with the bold 80s production motifs and big Brazilian hooks of "Danza Sueno". If this doesn't steal your attention, nothing will!

  1. Auntie Flo - "Die Bailando" (feat Eric Alejendro)
  2. Esa - "Sabela De Cuba" (Afro Synth mix)
Review: Early in 2014, Highlife regulars Auntie Flo and Esa traveled to Cuba to play at the country's biggest music festival. While there, they hooked up with a string of local vocalists and musicians to lay down the first installment of Highlife's World Series. Predictably, it's something of a triumph, with both artists gleefully joining the dots between Afro-influenced drum machine rhythms, traditional Cuban instrumentation and the kind of skewed synths that are such a feature of their work. Auntie Flo's effort is a 13-minute epic featuring the rambling vocals of Eric Eleindro and some snaking trumpet action. It's Esa who steals the show, though, with a dreamy, Balearic-minded cut that sounds like a contemporary update of Hugh Masekela's mid 1980s work.

  3. Bantu Clan vs Sarabi - "Africa Ni Leo" (extended mix) (7:46)
  4. Bantu Clan vs Sarabi - "Africa Ni Leo" (Behr remix) (5:59)
Review: After pit stops in Cuba and Kenya, Auntie Flo and Esa's Highlife World Series lands in Uganda for its closing edition. Recorded over various stints at the East Africa music conference DoaDoa in Jinja in the past year, these four tracks find our intrepid pair of travelling fusionists working with musicians from Burundi, Rwanda, Kenya and South Africa. First up is "DoaDoa14" by Christopher and Swahili Alley, named in honour of its genesis at that year's conference and a fine journey through spiritual African house music. Next up Esa shows off his prowess at extended dancefloor burners with a superb twisting remix of Santuri's "Min Kula" whilst the B side features Bantu Clan Vs Sarabi's "Africa Ni Leo" in both extended and remixed by Behr form. A fine end to a consistently enlightening series.

  1. Beard In Dust - "At The Dawn"
  2. Tales Of Voodoo - "Sharky"
  3. Esen Gunduz - "Deve Gucu"
Review: When it comes to exotic, off-kilter edits, you'll struggle to find a stronger series than Jonny Rock's Disco Hamam. This fifth volume is every bit as essential as its predecessors. Beards In Dust claims the A-side with "At The Dawn", a tidy revision of a druggy and "chuggy" version of a blue-eyed psychedelic funk-rock roller that comes complete with some serious sing-along sections. The heady world of Turkish music - a constant source of inspiration at the Disco Hamam HQ - comes to the fore on the B-side. Tales Of Voodoo's "Sharky" is a deliciously percussive, dancefloor-friendly fusion of Middle Eastern exoticism, funk-rock guitars and heavy disco percussion, while Esen Gunduz's "Deve Gucu" is an even sweatier, Italo Disco-era stomper that sounds like something you'd have heard in Istanbul clubs circa 1985.

  2. The Staple Singers - "Slippery People"
  3. Eric's Friends - "Discocaine"
  4. Brian Briggs - "AEO" (parts 1 & 2)
Review: Having released quality disco music since 2006, the Balerica imprint continues to dig deep to give its listeners more unearthed jams on Balearica 8. Bits & Pieces' "Don't Stop The music" opens with fat, synthesisers acting as the basis for this funk-laden freakout. "Slippery People" by The Staple Singers moves you with sharp pads, a shoulder-twitching beat and soulful vocal licks. Eric's Friends' "Discocaine" gives us a more traditional disco flavour, borrowing the lead line from Muddy Water's "Smoke on The Water" and laying it on top of a moving beat. Brian Briggs' "AEO" (parts 1 & 2) closes the record with an ocean-dipped jam, soaked in oriental flavour and served in an African wonderland. Highly recommended.

  1. Deep Is The Breath (Permanent Vaction mix)
  2. Deep Is The Breath (Pillow Talk remix feat Tone Of Arc)
  3. Deep Is The Breath (Hannulelauri Male remix)
Review: There's already been some killer remix fanfare to support the release of Fool, the fourth studio LP from Kasper Bjorke, with the likes of Axel Boman, Rebolledo and Till Von Sein adding their own production nuances to "Lose Yourself To Jenny" the master Dane's collaboration with White Horse vocalist Jacob Bellens. "Deep Is The Breath" is another album track that features Bellens, and gets tweaked by Permanent Vacation, Pillow Talk and Hannulelauri with excellent results. Benjamin Frohlich and Tom Bioly are more highly regarded for overseeing the Permanent Vacation label as opposed to their own production prowess, which is a shame because their effort is a highlight here, expertly building into a twisting mid 120 acid number with far too much ease.

  3. Maurice McGee - "Styx" (DJ Rocca 808 edit) (6:24)
  4. Orlando Johnson - "Turn The Music On" (Re Tide remix) (6:53)
Review: More from re-launched Italo-disco era label Full Time Records, who here present four fresh reworks of tracks from the vaults. G.A.M.M-signed scalpel hero Moplen steps up first to deliver a fine dubbed-out re-edit of Boeing's slap bass-propelled electrofunk classic "Dance To The Beat", before Massimo Beradi adds a little subtle, mid-tempo house flavour to Electric Mind's lesser-celebrated 1982 Italo-disco jam "Summing Up". DJ Rocca opens side B in some style, hammering away at a TR-808 drum machine while giving Maurice McGee's 1984 cut "Styx" an altogether deeper vibe. Meanwhile, Re-Tide turn Orlando Johnson's Paradise Garage favourite "Turn The Music On" into a muscular chunk of bass-propelled boogie-house badness.

Review: To celebrate ten years of the Full Pupp label, Prins Thomas has drafted in a host of label characters past and present for four various artist 12"s. The first of them sees the pumping and hypnotic "Stjernekrigen" from Jarle Brathen, the more funk-infused sounds of Casiokids' "Den Lange Veien Hjen", the pensive analogue sounds of Erik Skantze's "Stargaze" and Markus Varied's "No Vil Eg Bort Og Gifta Meg Og Rydja Meg Ein Gard", which creates a disco odyssey filled with jazz rhythms worthy of its tongue-twister of a name.

Review: Two more of the most famous tracks sampled by Daft Punk get pressed up on this cheeky little 7 inch. Breakwater's "Release The Beast" is unmistakably the blueprint for "Robot Rock" while "Cola Bottle Baby" by Edwin Birdsong was liberally sampled by Guy-Manuel and Tommy B on "Harder Better Stronger Faster". 4. Eli Escobar - "Lovely Feelin" (part II - beats)
Review: The musical branch of the Mercer Hotel Empire expands beyond the basement club SubMercer with the launch of this affiliated record label. Much like the (literally) underground club and its booking policy, the standard of music here is rich and refined and sees two regulars take the reins for the inaugural release. Runaway's Marcus Cabral continues to remind us of the duo's potency for proper house music. Utilising the vocal talents of Lindsay Mound, as well the mixing skills of John Selway, Cabral's "It's On You" is dream like, sensual house music at its finest. Occupying the flip, Eli Escobar follows a recent dashing outing for Wurst with "Lovely Feeling" an excellent rasping vocal house number which sees Lindsey Caldwell's vocals emerge from the depths and latch onto a classic rhythmic house refrain with aplomb. All in all the type of classy release you would expect from all involved.

As with previous drops there's a great sense of silky sonic consistency throughout that allays any fears you may have regarding various artist releases. From the cinematic late 70s illustriousness of Criss Cassara's "La Vela" to the deep heavy nodding Raha-fronted emotion session "Closer" via the sand-in-toes, fuzzy guitar-plucking title track, Pole Jam move forever closer to that all important 'essential label' status. Stay tuned.

  3. Dane - "I Want More" (7:34)
  4. Eddie C - "One For Dane" (4:13)
Review: Canada's foremost re-edit imprint continues to churn out the hits, largely by delivering dub disco and Balearic-tinged interpretations of long forgotten or little-known cuts. Common Edit regulars Dane and Khotin join forces on the A-side, delivering a sweet chunk of boogie-era synthesizer reggae ("Imho"), before heading futher towards peaktime territory with the low-slung, late night AOR disco of "System". Eddie C digs delves into his seemingly bottomless crates of obscurities for inspiration on "I Want More", a gorgeous chunk of piano-laden Balearic disco sweetness. Finally, Dane lights up something medicinal, closes his eyes and delivers the smacked-out, guitar-laden ambient chug of "One For Dane". It's an absolute beauty, if truth be told.

Review: The RDY series rolls on it its 28th edition, presenting three more edits that may or may not have been tweaked, reworked and expanded on by the great Ron Hardy during his time behind the decks at Chicago's legendary Muzic Box. First up is Tullio De Piscopo's classic "Stop Bajon (Primavera)" which has been edited in recent times by both Theo Parrish and Volcov; the original is a fine track which will delight any dancefloor, but then so will this edit. Face down, Eberhard Schoener's synth pop hook up with The Police, "Why Don't You Answer" is given an arpeggio boost, whilst John Forde's '79 disco funker "Don't You Know Who Did It" is smoothed out for the finale.

Review: Can DeGiorgio kick some shit or what?? 'Starwaves' is so the electro house sound of now coupled with an authentic 1980s electro vibe that not many besides Kirk could properly pull off. Fans of New Order in particular will love the sequenced basslines and rolling synth arpeggiations used throughout, slaved to a tough 4/4 groove. The breakdown features a wicked voicebox riff ala Cameo's Roger Troutman- brilliant!! The remixes start with Jimpster's string-driven Moroder inspired reworking for the Francisco/Marco Passarani fans out there while Spirit Catcher delivers for the more traditional deeper house heads with a crisp soulful revamp adding some choice vocal bits and a crisp, slinky groove.

The term is also the name for the new label venture from Edg4r, a key member of the boogie and disco loving Miami Players Club crew. The debut 12" comes from Diamond Jackson, aka Superior Elevation boss man Tom Noble and Edg4r in producer and executive producer role respectively, and features a trio of fuzzed out, disco-boogie-house crossovers. If you've been a fan of Noble's work to date, you will definitely be seduced by these three cuts which all feel redolent of a byegone era but benefit from contemporary production methods - the bassline on "Maybe So" is particularly heavy! A fine start for the Arcane crew!

Review: Iconic French producer Dimitri From Paris takes a break from his international globe trotting endeavours for Hand Of God to introduce Erodiscoteque - a new endeavour with DJ Rocca which marks Dimitri's first excursion for Gomma! "I Love New York" is naturally the duo's paean to everyone's favourite city, specifically the late 80's, early 90s era of freestyle and raw house. The title track is undeniably of this era, with a heavy midtempo MPC beat augmented by plenty of horn vibes and late nite piano stabs - watch out for that breakdown! "Beatdown" brings the electro boogie heat, all squelchy bass, post disco key squiggles and choppy beats. The real gem is reserved for the B Side with Italo disco deity Fred Ventura enlisted to add some vintage vocals to the electro synth odyssey that is "I Need A Reason" which is dipped in an authentic 80s quality that few these days can match.
