International Disco Mafia EP
  1. Crown Prince Of Waterford - "Getting Fingered On The Waltzers" (13:19)
  2. Island Times - "Together" (5:47)
  3. Umberto Lumber - "Between Those Sheets" (4:54)
Review: Chubby Irish groove hounds Fatty Fatty return with another sublime funk-stacked V/A three tracker. Local lad Crown Prince Of Waterford (not to be confused with the legendary blues singer) lays down a furiously funky jam about having fun at the fairground while fellow Emerald Isle strutter Island Times returns Fatty Fatty with a loose-limbed falsetto-loaded twanger. Finally, we fly off into the Italian sunset with a stunning slow jam from Umberto Lumber. A twinkling slo-mo chugger with serious cosmic tendencies, what a way to finish an EP.

Take It Easy 003
Take It Easy 003 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: TIE 003. Rel: 18 Sep 20
  1. Dirty Channels - "Guava Juice"
  2. DJLMP - "Track 3994"
  3. Memoryman Aka Uovo - "I Wonder"
  4. Bugsy - "Pomiri Dan"
Review: Take It Easy are a Milan-based crew who love nothing better than the sweet fusion between classic disco sounds and upfront house music energy. Dirty Channels capture that spirit perfectly on this third release on the label, opening up this split 12" with the crisp and strutting "Guava Juice". DJLMP takes things in a more psychedelic, tripped out direction for the more adventurous groove hounds before longstanding champion Memoryman Aka Uovo gets dusty and woozy with "I Wonder". Bugsy completes the set with the feisty stomp and sizzling tension of "Pomiri Dan".

Suggestive EP (limited 12")
Cat: PPU 061. Rel: 06 Oct 14
  1. Mayday
  2. Suggestive
  3. Ao
  4. Dreamboy 84
Review: The archives of Estonian artist Uku Kuut continue to prove fertile stomping ground for the PPU label, with this latest transmission drawing from unreleased material he recorded with his mother Maryn Coote. Coote is quite an established musician in her own right, recording a couple of albums as Marju Kuut, as well as collaborating with compatriot Uno Loop and it's clear her musical background helped shape Uku's formative direction. If you've partaken in any previous Kuut retrospectives from PPU, the four tracks here will be a real delight, with "Mayday" and "Dreamboy 84" particular highlights. The former is an alternate tape mix of a track from the Vision Of Estonia LP issued by the label back in 2012, whilst the latter features Marju's vocals in full swing.

I Feel Love
Cat: PPU 046. Rel: 13 May 13
  1. I Feel Love
  2. Santa Monica Pier
Review: Following the superb Visions of Estonia album from last year, estranged Estonian producer Uku Kuut resurfaces on Washington DC imprint Peoples Potential Unlimited with I Feel Love. This two-track EP is yet another perfect example of the label's speciality in dealing with obscure and unknown dance music gems from the '70s and '80s and highlights why PPU is an eternal favourite at Juno HQ. "I Feel Love" sounds like a combination between Todd Terje's heralded disco-edits and the Norwegian's pumping originals, while "Santa Monica Pier" shuffles and slides like Steve Wonder and Ray Charles knocking heads, drum machines, keys and synthesisers in a sun-drenched Californian studio.

You Don't Have To Cry Anymore
  1. You Don't Have To Cry Anymore
  2. Vision Of Estonia
Review: Originally out in 1985, Peoples Potential Unlimited reissue this soul boogie jam from Uku Kuut (who was born In the Soviet Union, raised in Sweden and now lives in Estonia) featuring Marju Kuut on vocals. On the flip is a mellow instrumental in homage to Uku's home for the past 20 years, now available for the first time on cute 7" vinyl. Top release!

Underdog Edits (double 12")
Cat: RNT 020. Rel: 31 Aug 16
  1. Drum Jawn (10:24)
  2. Love Is Da Need (7:13)
  3. So Damn Good (8:48)
  4. Just Fakin' It (7:56)
Review: Not to be confused with Trevor Jackson's covert edit alias of the same name from the mid '90s, Chicago scalpel wielder Leonard Part Sixx brings his Underdog project to New York's finest Razor N Tape for a hefty double pack. "Drum Jawn" sets the bar high, a percussion heavy version of early '80s German curio "Din Dada" by George Kranz that seems geared to set new records for the amount of drum samples used within the space of a track. From here, proceedings veer off down a classicist vocal disco wormhole - blessed with some modern squelches and groove twists from the Underdog - on "Love Is Da Need" before the second platter opens with the brushed honey soul strut of "So Damn Good." Sir Leonard rounds out the double pack with a slab of '80s disco funk in the shape of the heavy flexing "Just Fakin' It."

Review: PDD are pleased to welcome back Chicago's legendary edit don Leonard Part Sixx. His Underdog Edits have been on the playlists of DJ's all over the world. His monthly residency with Ron Trent's City Beat parties has been introducing a new generation to his groove and he was recently selected as Music Director of Chicago's new music mecca The Shrine Nightclub: forging a new era in music and nightlife. Although Part Sixx may be considered an Underdog, he is rising from the shadows of disco and becoming a up-and-coming player.Sourcing material both familiar and obscure, this release is an education on how to craft the perfect extended DJ version. You Plus Me Equals Love (remastered) (Record Store Day 2018)
  1. You + Me = Love (11:14)
  2. Sandman (4:00)
Review: Recorded in 1976, "You + Me = Love" was a song for Norman Whitfield's Whitfield Records, recorded by The Undisputed Truth. Whitfield, producer and creator of the band, had been at Motown Records for over a decade, and in 1975 left to start up his own record label. They were the first act to follow him from the legendary Detroit label after a lineup change, when Tyrone Douglas and then female lead singer Virginia McDonald left the group. Taka Boom, Chaka Khan's sister, joined longtime member Joe Harris, Calvin Stevenson and Tyrone Barkley. The song reached #48 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #37 on the R&B Charts, and was the group's one-and-only UK hit - appearing on the UK Singles Chart in early 1977.

  2. Take Your Time (Universal Cave 909 Rubdown) (6:45)
  3. Your Kind Of Love (Superprince edit) (6:50)
  4. Hang High (Superprince edit) (6:04)
Review: Universal Cave is a record label headed by the Philadelphia trio of Ryan Todd, Brian Hart Cassidy and Shawn Ryan. Their releases range from signature soft rock and AOR to disco, boogie and deep house. The aforementioned Ryan is also one half of the duo Superprince with Jeffrey Levi Fry, who are known for their sharp productions and remixes heard on labels like Moulton Music or Razor-N-Tape - and like on the latter they impress yet again with this collection of respectful edits. From the sweltering latin rhythms of "Lambada" to the timeless classic house of "Take Your Time" and even the mandatory slo-mo joint in the form of "Hang High" - which is as lo-slung as you like it!

  3. Track 3 (4:20)
  4. Track 4 (4:06)
Review: Whatever you think of the Unlimited Love series - and a few record collectors have grumbled online about it - you can't argue with the quality of the rare cuts they offer up. Volume 26 in the series is, of course, another must-have. First up is New Love Ltd & Interstate 95's positive and punchy disco-soul number "So Much To Talk About", quickly followed by another superbly soulful late 1970s dancefloor number, "That Friday Pay (Part One)" by Sonny Jenkins And The New York Potpourri Strings. The rare hits keep coming on the flip, where Sugar & Spice's boogie-era disco-funk number "The Beast (Instrumental)" comes accompanied by the low-slung brilliance of World Quake Band's "On The One", a 1980 B-side from a record that regularly changes hands for L140 a pop.

  4. You've Got To Have Freedom (Patchworks remix) (5:49)
Review: All hail master of musical ubiquity Bruno "Patchworks" Hovart, the funkiest world leader we truly need but don't deserve. Here we find the French stallion flexing back to a few cult gems in his vault. "Boogie" needs no introduction with its peppy organs and that massive Gemini Bros remix (complete with the salubrious slap bass) "You've Got To Have Freedom" takes us even further back in his catalogue to his first single under this alias. One of the most tasteful, soulful fix-ups Pharoah Sanders has ever had, it remains just as silky over 10 years later. So does Bruno's own jacking remix for that matter. Peace, love and boogie times.

  1. Kairo (5:22)
  2. Kozak 2000 (4:32)
  3. Kairo (Boris Dlugosch instrumental edit) (5:54)
Review: Originally released back in 1984, and regularly heard in underground clubs at the time such as Hamburg's legendary club Front, "Kairo" was the one and only EP by the enigmatic Udytu Utzelturk And His Male Harem - on the short lived King Kong Productions. The title track was considered controversial by some, with an Imam singing over an Italo disco style groove. On the flip "Kozak 2000" is a sleazy funk jam. As part of Running Back's 2019 reissue here, Gerd Janson has called upon Boris Dlugosch - one time resident of the aforementioned Front - to deliver the exclusive re-edit duties - and he does a pretty fine job of extending it out in respectful fashion.

Cat: FOSSIL 002. Rel: 18 Oct 17
  1. The Bump (6:55)
  2. Love Makin' (5:48)
  3. Beatcoin (5:23)
Review: We'll be first to admit that the description 'neon-lit' gets bandied about a fair bit around here, but good lord we haven't heard anything this much like it: it's almost fluorescent! Following up their 'enigmatic middle eastern funk bonanza' (with Anony & Mous' The Nile Files), Fossils return with a new EP from Tel Aviv via NYC's UV & Nen, who reveal what the label describes as 'long forgotten.. disco funk nuggets that are bound to become classics in their own right.' Starting off on the A side with "The Bump" which is a funky and lo-slung chugger with sleazy disco elements: just the way we like it. On the flip, "Love Makin" is where things get epically psychedelic, seasoned with sexy moans and 'abnormal synth activities' while "Beatcoin" is a steady slow stomper that will get booties shaken (and shaking) across the dance floor.

Review: Formed of Alice Castagnoli, Alessandro Costantini and Vincenzo Viceversa, the UM:BROS project dates back to 1984 with the trio mainly playing live, including performances at one of Italy's first electronic music clubs - Suburbia in Perugia. The trio signed for the legendary Italian imprint House Of Music and recorded an album, The Law Of The Three Trees: Motus, but it never saw release thanks to the short lifespan of the label. Over thirty years on the album and UM:BROS finally get their moment in the spotlight with this LP edition of The Law Of The Three Trees: Motus which veers through electronic, new wave and italo-disco in a modern and updated style!
