BBE
Cat: BBE 270SLP. Rel: 26 Apr 14
  1. The J's - "When Did You Stop" (Al Kent Disco version)
  2. Sandy Barber - "I Think I'll Do Some Stepping On My Own" (Al Kent Classic vocal mix)
Review: Record Store Day Edition: Al Kent knows his disco edits like we know how to breath, instinctively and naturally. Refocusing the emphasis on all the best aspects while paying complete respect to the original, he's a bona fide editing don. And these are two fine examples: The J's 1979 string-laced soul piece gets the full 4/4 treatment with tight loopy percussion that teases with neat groove drama. On the B we look to Sandy Barber for inspiration. Taken from her 1978 album Best Is Yet To Come, here Al's magic is found in the lolloping groove extension and slight twist on that insatiable bass runs. Two perfect treatments, one seriously essential Record Store Day 12".

  4. Can't Touch Me Anymore (5:11)
Review: Strike One was a British Funk act who was behind one of the fastest selling British 12 inch singles of their mid-eighties ear. That single is "Cant Touch Me Any More" and is presented here by High Fashion alongside some expert new remixes. The original is a real gem with playful bass and well-swung claps all topped off by the expressive vocals of Sabiha Kara and Tobi Bakker with Dick Maun on saxophone. The Marcel Vogel remix is a sympathetic one that adds bass weight and some contemporary touches, while Dino Soccio goes for a more cosmic touch.

Koi Jaye (Edit) (1-sided 12")
Cat: KOIJAYE. Rel: 27 Sep 19
  1. Koy Jaye (edit) (7:41)
Review: There's not a lot of info about this one other than it's a "mysterious" re-edit that's been setting alight the DJ sets of some serious selectors on the European electronic disco underground. Whoever is behind it, and whatever the original source material may be - we've not got a clue - "Koy Jaye" is astonishingly good: a throbbing chunk of glassy-eyed, shirts-off Italo-disco/Bollywood fusion that layers exotic Indian vocals and snaking horn lines over druggy arpeggio style bass and a stomping drum machine rhythm. It's the kind of thing capable of sending dancefloors crazy at four in the morning, and there's always room in the record bag for jams like that.
