Ce N'est Pas Bon (JD Twitch edit) (1-sided hand-stamped 10'')
Cat: AABONUS 10. Rel: 15 Jun 18
  1. Ce N'est Pas Bon (JD Twitch edit) (5:20)
Review: Long term advocates of JD Twitch's selecting skills will be very happy to see the appearance of this 10" featuring the Optimo man's edit of Amadou & Mariam. Originally made back in 2008, this edit has been a staple of JD Twitch sets and was intended to be released as part of the third volume of the superb charity focused Autonomous Africa series that was issued earlier this year. Licensing issues put the kibosh on those plans, but with the edit having belatedly been granted permission Twitch elected to issue it as one off 10" instead of waiting for volume 4 in 2015. As with the best edits, Twitch's amendments to the original version of "Ce N'est Pas Bon" are subtle and understated, adding little rhythmic elements that make it easier to slip into a DJ set and hypnotise minds. All proceeds will once again go to the Mtandika mission in Tanzania.

Review: A much needed repress for one of Minimal Wave's best and most impressive looking archival releases here. Originally issued four years ago, Synthesize pulled together some nine tracks from the archives of Autumn, aka Belgian duo Peter Bonne and Geert Coppens whose musical experiments together began in the 1970s and took full flight the next decade. This collection's inspiration comes from the 1981 &" of the same name that Autumn laid to tape in under seven hours, with both tracks featured and complemented by a further array of primitive electronics and supple synth experiments. It's worth it alone for the nervous energy of "Night In June" and "Laughter Of A Madman".

  1. Blackbelt Andersen - "Dolphin Sandwich" (10:01)
  2. Christian Engh - "Kyllingsmak" (9:06)
Review: Prins Thomas has decided to shake-up the Full Pupp release schedule a little, launching the Full Pupp Splits series to showcase tracks from different artists on one slab of wax. For the first installment, he first turns to long-established label artist (and occasional Norwegian passport office pencil-pusher) Daniel 'Blackbelt' Andersen. His "Dolphin Sandwich" is a deliciously tasty affair, with bold but breezy synthesizer riffs, huggable grooves and yearning, sun-kissed chords. In contrast, newcomer Christian Engh offers up something darker, chunkier and more bass-heavy, drawing influence from both Dutch revivalist Italo and the analogue-rich Norwegian disco with which Lindstrom made his name.

Review: If Music duo Jean-Claude Thompson and Adrian Magrys head up this fine six-track forage through the '70s and '80s archives of Eastern Europe. Stylistically, there doesn't seem to be an over-riding theme, it plays out more like a diverse selection of archival cuts spanning Poland, Hungary, Russia and Slovakia that will delight the more adventurous dancefloors. Thus you get infectious Polish disco grooves from Wojciech Karolak and Andrzej Korzyn?ski nestled alongside the break-laden jazz bustle of "Song For Ewa" of the Polski Jazz Ensemble. Similar styles abound with Russian-born "Prince Igor" Yahilevich and Hungary's Binder Quintet, whilst Alojz Bouda delivers our personal favourite in the shape of "Random," a suitably-titled oddball synth banger that originates from the Slovakian's 1980 album Synthesizer Sound

Review: With Minimal Wave at their current celebrated level, it's nice of them to occasionally dig into their archives and reissue some of their earliest releases for those Johnny Come Lately's who might have missed out first time around. Having done the right thing with an all too timely reissue of Das Ding's HSTA late last year, Veronica Vasicka's label now turn their attentions to Blackpool and revisit Spy Thriller by Das Kabinette. Originally released back in 2008, this eight track collection brings together material the trio of Michael Hall, David Bracher and Craig Hemmings recorded in the early 80s including the cult hits "The Cabinet" and "Fudge It" which appeared on a 1983 7". Fans of Silent Servant mixtapes will probably be familiar with these tracks whilst the remaining six tracks are typically unreleased studio productions that paint a fascinating picture of primitive synth music that's subtley touched by the death throes of New Romanticism.

  1. Tribute (original) (11:38)
  2. Tribute (DJ Jus Ed Deep Sleep remix) (7:42)

Review: The bond between Sascha Dive and fellow German operation Ornaments Music dates back to 2008 when the Deep Vibes boss put out the Deepest America 12". His love for the original US deep house sound remains unabated on this new 12" for Ornaments, Tribute, with the title track notable for some deft sampling of cult Detroit DJ The Electrifying Mojo. Around his legendary tones, Dive crafts a bone shaking house groove with chords positively dripping with emotion. Bust out the B side and Underground Quality's Jus Ed lays down a killer phased out Deep Sleep remix of the track whilst Dive adds his own filter heavy Disco version. A fine 12".

Review: Thanks to a string of fine disco and gospel-fired releases and remixes for the likes of Midnight Riot and Lumberjacks in Hell, Alan Dixon has become a must-check artist. Here he makes his bow on Running Back with arguably his most arresting and inspired EP to date. The real star of the show is co-producer Darren Morris (a regular Ashley Beedle collaborator), whose dazzling solos surge from the speakers on the driving, 1989 style piano house rush of "Moments" (reminiscent of his work on Beedle's peerless remix of Bent's "Always" in the early 2000s) and the Balearic house brilliance of "Star Dance" (think Phillip Lauer/Tuff City Kids). The fun continues on muscular, Italo-disco influenced opener "La Danza" and the colourful, sunrise-ready soundscape "Ambient Braindisk".

  1. Kratos (5:57)

  3. Kratos (Daniele Baldelli Electropsychomix) (6:23)
Review: It's quite a surprise that perennial Italian disco jammer DJ Rocca hasn't linked up with Rothmans before, but on the label's first release of 2016 he makes up for lost time with a grip of tracks positively dripping with full-fat synthy goodness. "Kratos" packs in a serious Italo thrum with its wonderful arpeggio bassline, bursting with optimism as every buoyant lead line piles on top of the forward-marching beat. "400 Fonk" meanwhile flips the script with a cheeky, bouncy beast of an analogue jam to get heads nodding like Wally Badarou just took the controls. Daniele Baldelli then blasts "Kratos" into the stratosphere with his muscular "Electropsychomix".

  4. Drvg Culture - "See You Again Someday"
Review: While the title evokes images of the Uncanny Valley crew getting up to sitcom-style scrapes while bumbling around Germany in a rickety old bus, there's an altogether simpler explanation for the Uncanny Vacation tag. Basically, it's a hook-up between the Dresden label and their pals from Munich's Permanent Vacation imprint, featuring tracks from both camps. Musically, there are plenty of thrills on offer, from the looped deep house-disco of Jacob Korn's "Eieiei" and bodypoppin' electro-meets-classic Italo of DMX Krew's "Astro Logical", to the woozy, almost Balearic analogue deep house of Drvg Culture's winding "See You Again Someday". It's as off-kilter but on-point as you'd expect. We'd still think the bus trip idea is a goer, mind.

Review: If you heard this collaboration between female vocal duo Ekkah and Dam Funk without knowing the identities of those involved, you would automatically assume that it was a little-known '80s soul EP. Both of the original tracks showcased here - "What's Up" and "Space Between Us" - sparkle with authentic 1980s synth-soul flavours, from the use of distinctive TR-808 cowbells and tactile synthesized basslines, to the vibrant colours of producer Dam Funk's colourful chords and melodies. Ekkah's vocals, too, are deliciously evocative and emotion-rich, conjuring images of cruising down Sunset Boulevard in the early hours in a soft-top convertible, killer boogie jams playing on the radio. The silkscreen sleeve is a thing of rare beauty, too.

  2. La-Ya-Hob (3:28)
Review: In 1977, Libyan musician Ahmed Fakroun flew to Milan to record some new material. The results were showcased on a pair of 7" singles, the most sought-after of which is being given the reissue treatment by Italy's Groovin label. The real winner here is "Nisyan", an Arabic interpretation of blue-eyed soul that fixes a baggy, sun-kissed sensibility, ear-catching Moog solos and a killer groove. "La Ya-Hob" is, if anything, even baggier and dreamier, with Fakroun delivering touchy-feely vocals over exotic, Middle Eastern synthesizer lines and a rolling, soft touch jazz-funk groove. Both cuts are equally breezy and jaunty, lingering in the memory for hours after each rotation.

  3. Allein (Tiney singlemann Replay) (6:33)
  4. Hormone (Tom Bolas Extension) (4:32)
Review: We're not sure whether Daniele Baldelli championed Fireplays' "Allein" when it first dropped on 7" way back in 1982, but it's the sort of cosmic disco/cosmic rock fusion cut that fits his original Cosmic Club template. This reissue marks the track's first ever appearance on 12", with the bubbly original - all walking disco bass, fuzzy rock riffs, guttural German vocals and spiraling synthesizers - being joined by an extended "Singlemann Replay" from Tiney that's effectively the 12" extended version the original release never had. Also worth a listen is original B-side "Hormone", a muscular, tongue-in-cheek fusion of camp disco elements and Moroder style arpeggio bass. This too is given a cheery edit style extension, this time by Tom Bolas.

  1. Top Of The World
  2. I Want To Thank You Baby
Review: The Voodoo Funk label returns with a 12" maxi single of sublime spaced out disco funk from Nigerian group First Planet which concludes their excellent Lagos Disco Inferno series. Lead by the inimitable bass playing and vocals of Willy Nfor, First Planet released just the one self titled album together back in 1980 for the Zanidisco label and two of it's highlights have been licensed for this Voodoo Funk platter. If you known Nfor for his previous band the Mighty Flames, you'll notice the decidedly more disco edge to First Planet (whose whole aesthetic was a subtle nod to Parliament) and both "Top Of The World" and "I Want To Thank You Baby" are high grade slabs of harmony heavy afro funk with neat little p funk undertones.

Review: Peculiarly, Fasaan offshoot Chalice has lain dormant since the label's first release appeared in stores back in 2014. Happily its Swedish parent label has decided to pull out all the stops for this comeback 12", gathering together six tracks from artists based across Europe and beyond. At six tracks deep there's not enough space to go into detail about every track, but suffice to say they're all loose, warm, quirky and generally lo-fi in feel. Highlights include the dreamy analogue synth-funk of Ruf Dug's "Cassette Boogie", the poignant, emotion-rich synth-wave warmth of Fahcrur Riaz Hazbullah's "Muriam", the clicking beats and intergalactic synth flourishes of "Heina" by Ruutu Pois and the frankly foreboding loose-house creepiness of "II Y A" by Dublin's Compassion Crew.

Review: G&D return to action with label EP number two. There's plenty to set the pulse racing across the four tracks, from the grandiose orchestral disco swirl of "Something", to the Daniele Baldelli-esque throb of "Agua Cosmica", a killer version of a druggy Cosmic club favourite that boasts both heavy dub disco bass and mind-altering synthesizer arpeggio lines. Arguably the pick of the bunch, though, is heavy disco-funk stomping "Spider" with an edit from Volcov, a hearty, groove-based peak-time anthem rich in K.I.D style instrumentation, fantastic slap bass and righteous rock riffs.

Review: Laurent Garnier began the LBS (Live Booth Sessions or Loud Bass & Samples) concept in 2010, as a means of experimenting with live techniques. The crew incorporates Garnier himself, as well as Benjamin Rippert on keyboards and Scan X on machines. The Timeless EP begins with "Jacques In The Box" delivering a full-impact slice of techno sprinkled with surging synthesisers and climbing polyphonic key strokes. The percussion seems to melt into one element as the kick drum drives this fast, hard and slightly euphoric techno jam. Loud Disco's mix of "Our Futur" will surely capture the ears of any large crowd caught in the reverie of a darkened nightclub, with a notable chord progression and sharp, saturated snare drum.

Review: Riding high on the buzz he has generated in the last twelve months, Max Graef delivers this album to Tartelet as a man very much in demand. His style, fuelled on the foundations of sampling funk and soul to a brilliantly modern end, has more space to breathe on this LP, but still the fundamentals remain. "Itzehoe" struts on a lazy jazzed-out sizzle of drums and beautiful Rhodes notes while "Tamboule Fudgefunk" punches its way through woozy synth work and a righteous beat and "Drums Of Death" struts on a perfect disco groove replete with live instrumentation, but there's a wealth of other tempos and styles all shot through with the homespun jazz charm that Graef has made his own of late.

Review: Balearic bliss.... Guiddo steps up to Beats In Space for the first time, and he's brought Georges Perin along for the ride, too. The title track is so slow, you'll be checking the RPM; confidently sedate and pensive, it's all about Perin's soft falsetto and soaring chorus as Guiddo's chords breeze gentle beneath. "I Miss You Now" comes with a similar introspective narrative but a much more prominent bassline that punctuates a sweet sultry stomp throughout. Finally we hit "Last Bite". Nodding towards the pastures of Tellier, there's an incredibly dreamy pastoral vibe thanks to the piano hook and far-away vocals. Powerful.

Review: A limited yellow vinyl funk odyssey from Record Store Day, "I Get Lifted" is taken from KC & The Sunshine Band's second album (1975) Still sounding shiny and floor-minded, the original stands the test of time incredibly well. Todd Terje's edit, however, takes it to another level; upping the tempo (and, possibly, the key), he's extended the right places, added a little more emphasis on the kicks and made sure we can't miss the breakdowns and instrumental sections.

Review: In recent times Rush Hour has excelled at reissuing obscure African music of the late 1980s, often pairing the original with a previously unheard cover version or remake. They're at it again here, offering up Les Choc Stars Du Zaire and Ben Nyamabo's 1989 cut "Nakombe Nga" with an obscure Belgian new beat cover by one album wonders Teknokrat's [sic]. Les Choc Stars Du Zaire's version is wonderfully positive, joining the dots between electronic soukous, ear-catching synth-pop and sunset-friendly Balearic vibes. The Teknokrat's version is, if anything, even more loved-up, with classic late '80s house instrumentation (Frankie Knuckles style synth-strings, jaunty pianos), ghostly electronic lead lines, delay-laden vocal passages and a superb synth bassline

Review: A beautiful repress that celebrates Nigeria and America's contributions to funk music, "Move!" is taken from Eno's 1982 album Living In The USA. Taking the rudiments of his African schooling, the drummer/guitarist/singer turns his hand to early rap on "Move!" over a sleazy funk beat that shimmers with minute echoes of highlife deep in the background. "Hot Love" follows up this fine fusion with a more upbeat 80s pop boogie focus. Big bass and reverbed vocals, it's going to sound great on your next dancefloor.

Four jazz funk obscurities each one primed with the spirit the Irma affiliate has pushed since his residency at the famous Kinky Club in the 80s; vibes range from the belting Al Green style falsettos of "Trying My Best Love" to the dual guitar peaks and crazed bluesy frenzy of "Run Mona" and the Booker T style organ blasts of "Lick The Lollipop". Hot and indeed groovy.

  5. Deep Dive
Review: The output of German producer Lucky Charmz is usually reserved for local imprint Lehult but here the Hamburg/Lisbon/Lund based fellow is back on Moody for the Seaside Greetings EP. Starting out with the dreamy and sampledelic deep house of "Ola Do Mar" or the cheeky disco-funk edit of "Sleepy Hollow" which has a very familiar hook. On the flip "Got Away Clean" goes for some lo-slung/slo-mo house for a change of tempo, as does the aptly titled "Deep Dive" for some truly emotive soulfulness.

  5. Midnight Blue (feat Surahn - Margo dub)
Review: Mr Flash, the man responsible for Ed Banger's debut release, unleashes another crucial single from his sophomore album Sonic Crusader. All slinky guitar licks, big synth stabs and soothing vocals from Surahn, it tiptoes the fine line between deep disco and Balearic bliss. Remix-wise Jon Convex presses the tech-funk button while Margot sends us straight up the clouds with a beautiful arpeggiated synth riff and dreamily spacious kicks. Hungry for more? Good - Ed Banger have also included "Moonchild". Galvanised with slap bass and spine-tingling synth overlays, it's got summer stamped all over it.

  4. More Lotion Ov Tijuana (8:31)
Review: Five years after Jolly Jams' inaugural "Mysterious" collection comes another shot of 'anon' action. Well, we know the brains behind the tracks but little else is given away. Not explicitly anyway. As you'd expect from the JJs camp (and the likes of label mates Richard, Claudio, Eric Duncan and More Lotion), it's nothing but a chug-fest as we're plastered with big lavish synth-blazed disco. From the late night technoid bounce of Richard's opener right through the Tijuanian cosmic finale, it's another concentrated shot of party fuel... And due to its hot nature, it's not likely to hang around for long. Jam on it!!
