The Tropical EP
The Tropical EP (double 7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: AOS 010. Rel: 29 Jul 20
  1. Aceedo Domingo - "Corre Riba" (4:25)
  2. Those Guys From Athens - "Na Bola" (3:45)
  3. DJ Laurel - "Peanut Man" (5:08)
  4. Monsieur Van Pratt - "Lose Your Mind" (4:24)
Review: As the title suggests, there's an undeniably humid, sun-kissed and tropical feel to Act of Sedition's latest double-dose of seven-inch re-edits. Accedo Domingo lives up to his name by adding squelchy TB-303 lines and relaxed house beats to a stirring Cape Verde dancefloor jam on "Corre Riba", before Those Guys From Athens deliver a chunky, house-style revision of a turn-of-the-80s MPB classic ("No Bola"). Over on the second "45", DJ Laurel tools up an undeniably funky disco number (the stellar "Peanut Man") before Monsieur Von Pratt makes an already heavy disco-funk number even weightier ("Lose Your Mind").

Another Bugged In Selection & Bugged Out Mix
Erol ALKAN/VARIOUS
K7
Cat: K7 294LP. Rel: 31 Aug 12
  1. Amin Peck - "Girl On Me" (instrumental edit)
  2. Ron Hardy - "Sensation" (Obi Blanche edit)
  3. Model 500 - "No Ufo's" (D-mix)
  4. Unovidual & Tara Cross - "Like I Am/Comme Je Suis" (Based On The Sling & Samo edit)
  5. Spandex - "The Bull" (Erol Alkan rework)
  6. Children Of The Night - "It's A Trip" (Mike Hitman Wilson's Psychedelic remix)
  7. Jan Hammer Group - "Don't You Know"
  8. Adjagas - "Mun Ja Mun" (instrumental)
  9. Buffalo Springfield - "Expecting To Fly"
  10. The Space Lady - "Major Tom (Coming Home)"
Review: Erol Alkan's 2005 Bugged Out mix was a gateway release for many, soundtracking the entrance into club land, yet also introducing these virgin ears to more esoteric strains of music via the accompanying Bugged In Selection. Some seven years on, Alkan and the evergreen club brand have revisited the concept with a second edition, and like the inaugural release, the Phantasy Sound boss's ever lasting love for the vinyl format has seen a selection of tracks make the translation to this double vinyl release. Six tracks from the Bugged Out mix appear, with the Italo disco of Amin Peck brushing shoulders with Model 500 and an Obi Blanche edit of the Ron Hardy classic "Sensation", while the Bugged In Selection sees some psyche-folk fare from Buffalo Springfield and Space Lady among other gems.

Love Goddess
Cat: ATH 066. Rel: 26 Jul 18
  1. Love Goddess (4:30)
  2. Good News (Tired Of Bad News) (4:44)
Review: Athens Of The North have worked with some OGs and veterans in their time but Bobby Boyd is by far one of the biggest and influential. Cutting his teeth in the Lafayette Afro Rock Band before going solo, he recorded a whole host of material that remained unreleased. Until now. "Love Goddess" kicks off the collection with a northern soul stomp, big harmonies backed by a tight, slippery funk groove while "Good News" is golden era Boyd funk with its bright horn work, positive sentiment and driving soul energy. This is an amazing piece of investigatory work by Fryer and co. And there's more, too...

Lady Bug
Lady Bug (12" with obi-strip)
Cat: GET 1200712. Rel: 11 May 17
  1. Lady Bug (John Morales & Frank Of Sunshine Sound mix) (9:54)
  2. Lady Bug (Larry Levan mix) (6:42)
Review: With its eccentric, helium-fuelled vocals, insatiable bassline, bold pianos and swirling strings, Bumblebee Unlimited's "Lady Bug" remains one of Patrick Adams and Greg Carmichael's greatest productions. This special reissue ignores the duo's original 1978 mixes, instead showcasing the '79 reworks released on RCA. On the A-side you'll find John Morales and Frank "Sunshine Sound" Trimarco's peerless, 10-minute "Disco Mix"- a rework that successfully showcases each individual musical element contained within Adams and Carmichael's similarly epic original production. On the flip, you'll find the lesser-celebrated but equally memorable Larry Levan remix, in which the legendary Paradise Garage resident wisely put more emphasis on the heavyweight bassline and relentless disco drums.

To Rack & Ruin Vol 8 (limited hand-numbered hand-stamped 140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: RR 009. Rel: 16 Feb 15
  1. Foreva
  2. Love Ma Gin
Review: For the 8th instalment of To Rack & Ruin we see the long awaited return of Neil Diablo this time dropping the 'Evil K'Neil' moniker from used for the first 2 volumes of the edits series.

First up on Foreva Neil skilfully chops up a little known raw 122bpm proto-house disco jam which has sumptuous boogie bassline, choppy stabs and a wonderful soulful female vocal extended and edited for dance floor delight.

On the flip is Love Ma Gin. A glittery disco affair with a heavy bassline and glamorous strings which builds and builds.

Early DJ support come from Crazy P, Pete Herbert and Emperor Machine.

  7. Tambien - "Quedarte" (vinyl only bonus track)
  8. Equip - "XXXO"
  9. NAD - "Distant Drums"
  10. Dopplereffekt - "Infophysix"
Review: Inaugurated back in 2006, the frustratingly sporadic Elaste compilation series from former Zombie Nation man Dompteur Mooner arrives at it's fourth edition and offers another telling demonstration of his crate digging skills. Whilst the double CD edition features a few well-known cuts, this pared down double LP edition focuses on the lesser known gems - Mooner's own edit of Barbara Norris's "It's Heavy" aside. From the mystical disco of Charanjit Singh and Rinder & Lewis's unusual "Gluttony", to the deep analogue house of Disco D's "Beat It" and C Cat Trance's druggy "Shake It", Elaste Volume 4: Super Motion Disco comes across as a compilation from days gone by, when DJs were diggers and entrusted with the responsibility to guide the general public through unchartered sonic waters.

  10. Oscar Perry - "Body Movements" (8:31)
  11. Spats - "Hot Summer Madness" (3:25)
Review: For the latest volume in their crate-digging disco series, Under The Influence, Z Records has turned to long-serving British brothers Simon and Robin Lee AKA Faze Action. In keeping with the series' dusty-fingered ethos, there's plenty of brilliant rarities to set the pulse racing - see the smooth '80s boogie of Leston Paul's "All Nite Tonight", the up-tempo hustle of Oscar Perry's "Body Movements" - as well as a smattering of obscure versions of classic dancefloor hits (check Michele Claire's version of "In The Bush"). You'll also find a smattering of killer Faze Action edits, too, with their version of Midway's "Set It Out" and Mikki's freestyle-era boogie ham "Dance Lover" standing out.

Summertime
Cat: FMG 45. Rel: 23 Jul 20
  1. Summertime (vocal) (5:38)
  2. Summertime (instrumental) (4:11)
Review: It's been a weird summer for sure in 2020, but you can improve yours by a guaranteed 100% with the addition of this hard to fine and often expensive 1980 great. High Frequency was a disco offshoot of Aleem, a boogie-funk, r&b and dance music trio formed in New York City. "Summertime" is the sort of bristling and infectious disco cut even the stony hearted can enjoy. The funky bassline, the feel good vocals, the lush chords - it's a real pearl of a track. The instrumental is just as feel good and uplifting. What a 7" this is.

Nzambi Remixes
Cat: ERS 004. Rel: 05 Nov 12
  1. Nzambi (Terekke remix)
  2. Parallel Sensations (Timothy J Fairplay vocal remix)
  3. Before The Dawn (Jonas Reinhardt remix)
Review: After the tense and dramatic soundscapes of Jason Letkiewicz's Nzambi LP under his soundtrack guise Alan Hurst, Emotional Response have put the tracks to the test for three appropriately oddball remixers. Fellow L.I.E.S. affiliate Terekke turns out a heavily sedated dub of "Nzambi" that rides a pacey house beat but buries everything in delay and reverb. Timothy J Fairplay brings some serious sleazy 80s electro tones to "Parallel Sensations", complete with predatory vocal and thick ladles of synthy goodness. Finally, Jonas Reinhardt cools off the intensity with a blissful ambient version of "Before The Dawn" which plunges headfirst into a warm bed of melodic drones.

  11. Rick Wilhite - "Get On Up!" (Theo Parrish' Late dub)
  12. Juan Maclean - "Feliz Casa" (Frankel's Rhodes Workout)
Review: Studio K7’s long running mix series, DJ-Kicks, continues with an instalment from NYC disco head Juan Maclean (former hosts include the likes of Hot Chip, Booka Shade and Henrik Schwarz). Sculpted with a combination of classic tracks and more recent cuts, the mix displays a diverse collection of songs that are more focused on the club than past mixes.

Although Maclean is mostly known for his productions and live performances, he is also a DJ of some repute and his inclusion in the series is no surprise. What is somewhat intriguing, however, is his decision to make a straight up house mix. Over the running time of seventy-two minutes, Maclean keeps the energy levels high as his unleashes his collection of records meant for the club. Selecting from a rich tradition of house music with a disco twist, he includes a combination of classic tracks like Rick Wilhite’s "Get On Up" (remixed by fellow house don Theo Parrish) and recent disco cuts from the likes of Shit Robot, Still Going and 6th Borough Project.

The mix has a free flowing feel throughout due to Maclean’s raw method of producing: the whole compilation was mixed live using only two turntables, a couple of filters and a tape delay, placing the emphasis squarely on the sprit and excitement of the mix as opposed to its sound.

Review: A stone cold cult classic from the West End vaults, Kenton Nix was one of New York's most prolific producers during the late 70s and throughout the 80s working his magic with the likes of Afrika Bambaataa, Teena Gardner and Gwen McCrae (among many others). On this rare 1980 solo 45" he teamed up with a young Bobby Youngblood to create an emphatic soul disco powerhouse that clear set the foundations for the wealth of big vocal proto house tracks that followed in its wake. Complete with both versions, this is a rare reissue and isn't likely to hang around for long...

Review: Those fans hankering for more stuffy nosed opining from James Murphy and his rotating assembly of LCD Soundsystem musicians will have to suffice with the odd reissue of their classics from DFA Records. Originally released in 2004, Yeah was, along with Beat Connection, the sort of 12" that captured perfectly the joy of seeing LCD Soundsystem play live; a heaving organic mass of thick bass lines, clomping percussion and gut punching disco punk beats and of course Murphy's disaffected vocals that seemed to spring forth from the wax with nervous, sweaty energy. Both the Crass and Nervous versions still sound immense nearly a decade later and this new pressing comes in the same classy printed sleeve and plastic wrapping of the DFA release done in conjunction with Trevor Jackson's Output .

  4. Inigo Vontier - "Makata" (4:35)
  5. Sano - "Bantu" (5:10)
Review: Thus far, Cult Edits has proved to be one of the most interesting and intriguing rework re-edits series around, with each 12-inch offering an impressive selection of cosmic, exotic and otherworldly reworks. Volume four continues on a similar theme. Manfredas kicks things off with the dirty ragga-house pressure of "Riddim", before Thomass Jackson has his way with a far-out tribal disco chugger on EP standout "Build The Bridge". Mid-'80s electronic Afro-chug is the order of the day on Balam's "Lentombi", while Inigo Vontier's "Makata" is percussive, heavily electronic, weird and undeniably druggy. In comparison, Sano's chant-along Afro-electro number "Bantu" is positively breezy.

Cat: FINAWHITE 003. Rel: 14 Sep 15
  1. Living In A Bottle (7:37)
  2. Taurus (6:58)
  3. To Digi (6:13)
Review: For the latest slice of magic on the evermore impressive Fina White, The Organ Grinder, aka
Cayne Ramos, continues with a prolific run of releases which has planted his expansive productions straight in the bags of discerning club commanders like Move D, Brawther, and
Laurent Garnier. Showcasing a broad, tasteful musical pallet, studied studio skills, and a sharp ear in the mix, The Daily Struggles EP is a fine arrangement of house and techno that will find itself at home on the uncompromising warehouse floors, the sun-drenched courtyards, and in the darker, seedier moments of the night, when only the strong remain, and the weak have long since departed.

Wasting no time, the Organ Grinder leads the line with Living in a Bottle, a classic house number on an MCDE tip, laced with infectious vocal samples, muffled Rhodesian keys and groovy, beddeddown bass lines, conducted by a tight back line of crisp, snappy, dusty drum parts.

On the flip side The Organ Grinder moves from the barbecue to the main room with some Berghain sized techno on B1. Taurus is for those who love those big, pulsating kicks, clattering hi hats and deep, penetrating bass notes that work so well in Spartan warehouses at 3am.

Moving the clock along to 7am and relocating to the beach on B2 with Too Digi The Organ Grinder brings the Daily Struggles EP to a head with perhaps the strongest track of the release - a proper cut of deep, tripped out Herbert-esque grooves and vintage keys revolving around an infectious, warped disco vocal. The sort of stuff jocks like Move D and Zip deploy to such devastating effect in the after hours.

Sometimes I Wish
Cat: ERC 015. Rel: 06 Oct 14
  1. Sometimes I Wish (Dramadance USA remix)
  2. Miss Fortune (extended edit)
Review: Emotional Rescue takes a look towards the danceflor sounds of Britain underground 80s electronic synth-pop scene for their next release. From Dallas' infamous ecstacy fueled Starck club to the Le Palace in Paris, it was such music that while not gaining wider pop recognition, become classics of their time and the secret fids for today's DJs.
With the synthesized sounds of Gary Numan, The Human League, Depeche Mode, New Order and Yazoo sweeping the pop charts between1980 and 1985, there were many electronic groups that never reached such heady heights. Up and down the country, clubs were mixing these revolutionary hits with an array of underground and experimental electronic dance tracks that never made it up to the surface of popular culture. While industrial groups like Chris & Cosey and Cabaret Voltaire developed from experimental tones towards a more pop and club orientated vision, a myriad of independent labels appeared to release literally hundreds of synth dominated groups vying for the spotlight. Long lost labels like Ink, Survival and Illuminated today offer many lost treasures and in one of these you'll fid the duo of Pink And Black and their one (miss) hit wonder. Rob Stroud and Michelle Yee-Chong worked with limited budget, rudimentary studios and temperamental equipment to create a piece of synth-pop history. While Sometimes I Wish was clearly aimed at the flor with it's nonchalant vocals, driving rhythms and uplifting lines, it was Miss Fortune - hastily recorded in leftover studio minutes that showed a true glimpse of (leftfild) genius. Wispy vocals, snap break beat and DX bassline all meet here in an unreleased extended form and show why it has become a secret play for the likes of Joe Hart (World Unknown), Veronica Vasicka (Minimal Wave) and Josh Coen (Dark Entries).

Review: Given his multiple production aliases, love of collaboration and two acclaimed labels - the effervescent Aus and Simple Music - its surprising Will Saul has time to think, let alone lay down a DJ Kicks mix. That the resultant mix is a woozy, atmospheric, multi-textured voyage through many shades of deep house, techno and bass-flecked electronic music is less surprising. Tightly packed with exclusives - see Bicep's rave-flavoured "Nova", for starters - and with cuts from pals October, George Fitzgerald, Cottam and Axel Boman, amongst others, there's plenty for fans of Saul's ever-evolving sound to cheer. This vinyl edition packs 12 of the 24 cuts from the mix across two slabs of vinyl and you get also get a CD of the mix with Saul building a distinctly warm and wide-eyed vibe over 80 mesmerizing minutes.

The Pittsburgh Diaries
The Pittsburgh Diaries (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: LIH 019. Rel: 31 Oct 16
  1. Climb On (5:31)
  2. Hands Free (5:22)
  3. Stuttering (6:34)
  4. At Ease (feat Buscrates) (5:46)
Review: Marcel Vogel's Lumberjacks In Hell label shows no signs of slowing as it ramps up a killer new salvo from debutant artist C Scott. "Climb On" is an uptempo workout to capture the absolute peak of the party in the funkiest of ways, while "Hands Free" provides an apt alternative with its slow, organ-led whimsy. Disco remains the backbone of the sound here, whatever tempo the track rolls at and wherever it may head. "Stuttering" demonstrates this perfectly with its heavily treated, head-spinning FX still capturing that classic good-time mood, while "At Ease" finishes on a life-affirming canter of Rhodes led celebration.

Night Control
Cat: EES 003. Rel: 25 Nov 13
  1. Richard Sen - "Night Navigator" (Scott Fraser remix)
  2. Scott Fraser - "Ask Your Control" (Richard Sen remix)
Review: Friends for many years, Richard Sen and Scott Fraser come together with a dose of mutual admiration and back slapping by remixing each other on this 2 track EP. However, what makes this collaboration different is there are no original versions appearing, just these remixes. By completing an unfinished track of each the other, the pair have taken the respective unarranged music and gone back to their East London studios to, in essence, finish the other's songs in the form a "remix". Known for a myriad of deep electronic dubs in the last few years, Scott provides plenty of surprises with his remix of Richard's Night Navigator. A driving 10+ minutes 'piano-house' opus, the late 80s Italian / Balearic vibrations run straight through his interpretation of that classic Mediterranean sound. Not for long though, as firmly dragging things straight back to the dark and wet streets of Hackney, Richard takes Scott's Ask For Control and creates a tough, percussive, deep dub remix that would propel any basement dance floor through the early hours.

The Drummer Downstairs
Cat: FIT 003. Rel: 03 Sep 18
  1. Trackin (6:16)
  2. Drummer Downstairs (3:17)
  3. Frayed (8:15)
Review: Anthony Shakir comes correct on the Fit Sounds imprint with three tracks that veer between the many strands of Detroit machine funk business. Proceedings commence with "Trackin", an unadulterated slice of rawness that leans on disco via filtered synth flourishes that burrow deep, with the thumping bass drums and soaring string section giving the track that motor city hue. The very loud and very good beatdownisms of "That Drumming Track" follows with a multiplicity of layered drums raining down and somehow achieving a fractured rhythmic thud; think Roska collaborating with Kyle Hall. On the flip Shake goes deep with the slow mo, off kilter burn of "Frayed" which sounds almost wrong at 33rpm during the opening sparse moments. The arrival of a slowly ascending organ sound that mutates brilliantly is the point where jaws drop as the track unfolds in stunning fashion.
