  5. Kathy (Jonny Rock edit) (4:28)
Review: Mila Anatoli is one of those artists whom we might never have heard about despite such a singular sound. It's only because one half of Pyschemagik aka Spacetalk boss Danny McLewin picked up an acetate of her early 1980s demo recordings from a record dealer in New Jersey that we are now learning of her story and hearing of her work on this reissue package. It's a fascinating listen that fuses many different sounds - wave, space music, synth and a dreamy vocal style into outlier music that is retro yet futuristic. Sure to come a real collector's favourite, this is a fine introduction to a criminally unknown artist.

Hustle Do Brasil
Cat: KMPN 007. Rel: 18 Dec 20
  1. Hustle Do Brasil (Aroop Roy rework) (4:28)
  2. A Festa (Aroop Roy edit) (4:02)
Review: There's something special with these hush-hush reworks and re-edits as they breathe new life into dusty old Brazilian disco and boogie cuts. A-side 'Hustle Do Brazil' is a rambunctious, party-starting treat that turns a handful of loops from a piano-heavy South American disco record into a bouncy, disco-house slammer. He subtly switches tack on side B, delivering an edit of the deeper, smoother and jazzier 'A Festa', wisely prioritising his source material's spacey jazz-funk synths, heady party atmos, good grooves and even greater electric piano stabs. Samba-disco magic!

  1. I Believe In Miracles (3:30)
  2. No Nos Pararan (6:48)
Review: In 2011, Banda Achilifunk & OJO served up Gitano Real, one of the year's most essential albums. It was caned far and wide by funk lovers, in particular Craig Charles on his 6 Music show. Now, two cover versions taken from the essential album have been pressed to limited edition translucent yellow vinyl. First up, 'I Believe in Miracles' is an overwhelming take on the Jackson Sisters classic with plenty of happy Latin vibes and rumba funk rhythms. Flip it over for a more abstract version of McFadden and Whitehead's seminal 'Ain't No Stoping Us Now' which is a soulful disco number packed with sunshine.

Anywhere You Want To Go
Cat: DB 012. Rel: 12 Jan 21
  1. Anywhere You Want To Go (7:18)
  2. I Don't Want The Night To End (6:37)
Review: Serious disco business here from Felix Bastedos. He may not have been born in wedlock but he sure knows his way around an edit. Two pretty obscure cuts here get Bastedized: on the A we have 'Anywhere You Want To Go', a big old heavy disco funk groove with plenty of switches and surprises along the way. Meanwhile on the B things step up a notch or two tempo wise as the almost country-styled vocal takes the lead as we pray for the night to never end. Keep on dancing.

  3. 1AM Call (Mark Seven remix) (6:18)
  4. 3AM Call (Mark Seven remix) (6:50)
Review: Park Way has been a much loved label for retro sounding house jams over many years. Now they have a new one from Joey Beads that gain fide a perfect sweet spot between invention and revivalism. The lead tune 'Sprit Call' is a lush bit of deep house with some magic chords and keys, prickly hi hats and plenty of loose bongos. The flip has three remixes by Mark Seven that all relate to different times in the night or early morning. The 6Am call is out pick - it's all gentle keys, hollow grooves and reflective moods that takes you miles away from the here and now.

Check It Out People (reissue)
Cat: SSR 218. Rel: 18 Jan 21
  1. Beastie Boys Vs MFSB - "Check It Out People" (4:19)
  2. MFSB - "People All Over The World" (dub) (4:08)
Review: The latest edition in DJ Soopasoul's "Soopastole Edits" series looks like it may fly off the shelves, and with good reason. The lead cut is not an edit per se, but rather a crafty, clever and expertly produced mash-up that places selected rap flows from the acapella version of Beastie Boys classic "Ch-Check It Out" over a tightened up and fattened up rearrangement of MFSB's disco-era jam "People All Over The World". Sometimes these kinds of mash-ups can be messy, but this genuinely isn't, with the Beasties' vocals fitting the backing track like a glove. Over on side B Soopasoul shares his tweak of the MFSB track, which is entirely instrumental bar periodic use of the band's female backing vocals. In a word: ace!

  1. Nothing But Love (For JB) (8:53)
  2. Hold Fast (4:38)
  3. Yes Indeed (Rock Free For Trouble) (6:21)
Review: The irrepressible Gamm label have said that all profits from this release will be handed to charity in Paul 'Trouble' Anderson's honour. It's a super EP of edits by UK legend Ashley Beedle who teams up with his pal Abi Clarke. The opener is a real gem that reworks the buttery tones of Barry White with real sympathy, 'Hold Fast' is then a glossy r&b tinged slow motion disco tune with steamy and sensors vocals and a fine funky bass riff, then closing the show is a classy boogie anthem
'Yes Indeed (Rock Free For Trouble)' from Steve Arrington that dazzles and pleases in equal measure.

Best & Remixed (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ASTRO LTD3. Rel: 14 Dec 20
  1. Nigel Hayes & Rachel Berg - "Take me to the sea (John Beltran mix)" (4:53)
  2. C-Pull - "Soulmate (John Beltran remix)" (6:10)
  3. John Beltran - "Summer Storm (Nigel Hayes remix)" (6:56)
Review: The pointedly deep Astrolife label, run by Nigel Hayes and Vincent Inc, is taking things way, way down with this stunning 12" from John Beltran. It's a varied affair that leads in with the sumptuous, percussive house pattering of Beltran's remix of Hayes and Rachel Berg's 'Take Me To The Sea'. It's the kind of track that will transport you to dreamy, sun-soaked terraces in a flash. Beltran's version of C-Pull's 'Soulmate' is a very different affair - a peppy broken beat groover that wouldn't sound out of place being worked by the likes of Kaidi Thatham or Dego. Then Hayes is back, this time remixing Beltran's 'Summer Storm' and giving it a chunky rhythm section to carry the hazy melodics into peak time.

Cat: ITSO 120. Rel: 14 Dec 20
  1. Black Hole (7:21)

Review: Some new Italian space disco here from two right veterans of the scene. Beppe Loda of Typhoon Club fame with the lesser known (but equally revered) Francesco Bomardo (Hypnotik/M.C. Claude). 'Black Hole' is their new release, said to be comprised of some tracks from late '80s promos. Here they honor the 'Space' genre of the '70s on the cosmo-psychedelic journey that is the original mix, followed by a more groovy and upbeat club version on the flip. This is not the first time these two legends of the Brescian scene have collaborated, those of you who are interested should check out their previous work as Egotroya.

Cat: BR 005. Rel: 23 Nov 20
  1. This Poem (Roots Unit alternative version) (7:46)
  2. Trenchtown Double Down (Roots Unit Stepping Razor version) (6:47)
Review: The shadowy Black Rox label out of Brighton returns after two years silence with some more dusty deep house delights that place the Black roots of the music front and centre. That's especially true of A side cut 'This Poem (Roots Unit alternative version)', which reframes the classic Bobby Konders track and the iconic 'Dis Poem' by Mutabaruka. This 2020 update drapes the track in plush swathes of string pads and undulating percussion perfect for mellower moments on and off the floor. Then Roots Unit tackle further aspects of Jamaican music culture with 'Trenchtown Double Down (Roots Unit Stepping Razor Version)', which samples a spread of vocal samples and straps them to a sparse but funky groove.

Music For Us (reissue) (incl Danilo Braca remix)
Cat: HM 1006. Rel: 29 Dec 20
  1. Music For Us
  2. Music For Us (instrumental)
  3. Music For Us (Danilo Braca Re-built mix)
Review: Blackway & Helene released 'Music For Us' in 1982, creating a hit in the process. The plush Italo vibes positively pour out of the track with stylish aplomb - it's no wonder the track has been picked up for reissue by House Of Music. The A side is given over to the original vocal and instrumental versions of the track, both of which feature a veritable army of synths to get down to, all held together with a pleasingly loose vibe. Marking this release out in particular though is the remix on the flip from Danilo Braca - a true Italian underground hero with just the right ear to take the track into a whole new dimension without losing sight of the original vibe.

Review: Now going by his given name of Dave Lee rather than his obviously problematic previous alias Joey Negro, the Z Records boss has not showed any dip in form since the switch. Here he serves up three of his legendary mixes, this time tackling an unearthed and unreleased Leroy Burgess tape that was recorded in the same sessions as 'Heartbreaker'. 'One Plus One' is the sound of an artist in his prime, with lush backing singers adding buttery warmth to the lead vocals, big instrumentals filing your soul with joy and noodling bass driving things along. All three mixes are superb and subtle in equal measure.

Review:  Party days can't be that far away now, and Cardiology continue to have you covered with some of the choicest slabs in the edit game. This time it's C Da Afro on the buttons, shining bright after a massively productive 2020 in which he slipped out no less than five records. He's clearly not short on material to get busy on the slice and dice with, given the quality of the gear he's presenting on this new 12". As you'd expect for Cardiology the tracks aren't that easily trainspotted, ranging from the insanely catchy disco delights of 'Hustle' to the housed-up funk of 'Hold Up'. It's serious music for serious heads, but with that universal party starting appeal that any self-respecting disco edit should have.

Review: Casbah 73 makes his Glitterbox Recordings debut here with a slice of disco so funky and soulful that you will not be able to get it out of your heart or head. The big vocal hook is what drives the whole tune forward and is from Angela Goode, who sounds utterly timeless. Although it's a brand new tune it drips with that 70s authenticity and comes with a Percussion Jam, noodling remix from Body & Soul man Danny Krivit who draws out the breaks, and then a more steamy and freeform version from Rahaan who makes more of the jazzy keys.

  1. Spacer Woman (vocal) (7:26)
  2. Spacer Woman (instrumental) (7:28)
Review: It would be fair to say that Charlie's "Spacer Woman" is timeless; an Italo-disco classic that has aged far better than many of its cheesy contemporaries. Recorded and released in 1983, the track is far more cosmic and intergalactic in feel than many of its synth-pop influenced contemporaries, doffing a cap to U.S electro as well as the electronic disco productions of Giorgio Moroder and Patrick Cowley. It became something of a dancefloor anthem in Chicago and Detroit on the eve of the house and techno revolutions and remains one of the best electronic dance records of all time. Here both the vocal and instrumental versions are presented in re-mastered form on hand numbered vinyl. If you don't already own a copy, snap one of these up pronto.

  3. Tropicale 17 (Chicken Lips Malfunction) (12:13)
Review: You can always rely on Whiskey Pickle for some of that playful weirdness and this time out it is prolific Italian producer DJ Rocca who serves up the musical thrills and spills. 'Detox' is an old school, 80s sounding synth heavy jam with poly rhythms and tropical feelings that lead to steamy dance floors. Things stay retro with 'Tropicale 17' which has a nice shimmery electro beat, arpeggiated bell sounds and naturalistic jungle motifs that take you to another world. Remixing it is long time disco dons Chicken Lips, who smooths things out to go for a more extended and slow burning cosmic journey.

Review: Absolute gold from Earth Wind & Fire that was only ever included as filler track on their 1977 All N All album, it's been a staple sample across house and hip-hop ever since, utilised creatively by everyone from Tribe Called Quest and Danny Krivit. Previously only 80 seconds long, Fryer has managed to unearth a previously unreleased extended version that really digs into those honeyed harmonies. "My Love" takes us four years forward to their 13th album Raise! where the musical emphasis has developed from all-out vocal soul to a more restrained rare groove feel. Review: The Loft Party is a new EP from Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee who have named in no doubt with a nod to the David Mancuso parties that would well have found the music contained within irresistible. It's an EP that wastes no time in getting you on the floor thanks to the irresistible funk bass of opener 'Be Free.' The Nebraska remix is a more straight up house pumper with tons of synth effects bubbling away and 'Mista Groove' then slips into a more cool and seductive groove that is heavy on the keys. A further two boogie infused cuts keep the quality levels high.

Electropop banger 'Body Talk' is first up with its lung busting vocals, jangling pop chords and nice nimble drum work all finished off with some big retro future synths. Here it is the filthy indie licks of The Exorcist GBG that they turn to. First up is the intense biker disco, guitar licked, tobacco stained workout of 'Stonerdisco', with its charging drums, sci-fi keys and layers of sonic filth and scuzz. Review: Fat Edits is the latest anonymous edits label to arrive into the market place. The first release was a big and bold one back in summer, and the high energy sounds keep on coming here with some more mysterious cut and paste jobs. There is nothing subtle about the stomping drums and big string stabs of 'Come On People,' which demands you dance. 'Everybody Come On Out' keeps up with the sweaty grooves, this time with dizzy sax lines and diva vocals. 'Take Me Home' is the pounding closer with steamy vocals and bubbling drums that almost fall over themselves so excited are they to make you move.

Review: The Filament crew are Amsterdam based purveyors of nu-disco, who have returned with the second edition in their electrifying various artists series. The last one featured some awesome tracks by the likes of Kito Jempere and Carrot Green, but on Vol. II there's a Sunday open-air festival vibe. The label head honchos themselves go deep into the exotic, Disco Halal style, on '4:28 PM' and Glowing Palms bring on the sunset in neon-lit fashion on '6:04 PM'. On the flip, Super Drama goes deeper into the night by getting some noir-ish Italo disco vibes happening on '9:37 PM' and Ghostwhip takes over the closing set with a curveball in the form of UK garage influence stepper '10:56 PM'.

He's long been pushing forward with his own vision for wave, house and disco sounds that could be 40 years old or beamed back from the future. Now alongside Bordello A Parigi and with support by Sameheads, he offers up his majestic debut album. It's a late night homage to glittering disco arps, rugged wave grooves and retro space references that are all crisp, well defined and full of chapter. The mix of guitars, synths and drum machines is one that gives rise to a great range of emotion and texture from start to finish.

  1. Walpole Days (Joe Claussell Sacred Rhythm mix) (10:55)
  2. Walpole Days (Joe Claussell Sacred Cosmic Arts Jam) (8:06)
Review: Sacred Rhythm founder Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell is a master of his own musical universe. It is spiritual, deep, and wrapped up in the sort of palpable feelings most producers can't ever dream of conveying. His trademark sound is here in all its glory on this new pair of remixes of 'Walpole Days' for Claremont 556. His Sacred Rhythm mix is all subtle pads and organic perc, majestic cosmic leads and classy chords that ooze a late night soul. Flip it over and you'll find a Sacred Cosmic Arts Jam that is only slightly different, with extra space given to the leads.

Barefoot Beats 11
  1. JKriv & Dicky Trisco - "Mae Do Mar" (7:52)
  2. Bernardo Pinheiro - "Xango" (6:40)
Review: The 11th Barefoot beats is another hugely effective disco 12" with two well purposed cuts. JKriv & Dicky Trisco link up first for 'Mae Do Mar,' a tune that has you dreaming of warmer climes, sandy beaches and sunny skies. It's an airy cut with a tropical percussive line, hints of Latin flair and breezy vocals. Flip it over and the temperature goes up a notch - Bernardo Pinheiro's 'Xango' is a superbly soulful and heartwarming groover. The chords are draped elegantly over the busy funky bass and the vocals are chants that draw your attention and get you in a trance.

Love Hangover
Cat: GCV 001. Rel: 01 Dec 20
  1. JN - "Love Hangover" (Micky More & Andy Tee Disco Blend) (6:50)
  2. The Sunburst Band - "New York City Woman" (Micky More & Andy Tee Disco mix) (7:12)
  3. The Sunburst Band - "New York City Woman" (Micky More & Andy Tee Piano intro) (1:18)
Review: Italy seems to have no end of edit labels and now Groove Culture throws its name into the hat with this inaugural release. It finds Micky More & Andy Tee team up over three different cut and paste jobs, with JC aka Dave Lee aka Joey Negro's version of Diana Ross's classic 'Love Hangover' up first. Little changes but for the re-sung vocal, more strident groove and drawn out break down, but that's still enough for you want to hear it. The Sunburst Band's 'New York City Woman' then gets a rework which is deep and steamy for the late night hours, and an a cappella is also served up to close things out.

  1. Joi La Frique - "Family Rally" (5:40)
  2. Beard In Dust - "Calypso Boy" (6:01)
  3. Nonna Fab - "Tension (Release mix)" (6:35)
  4. Lancaster Bomber - "African Sauna" (7:11)
Review: The Apricot Ballroom crew are operating out of Sheffield and carrying the torch from the foundational work of David Mancuso's Loft parties and similarly spirited affairs like Lucky Cloud. Now they launch a label loaded with smoking hot edits that very much speak to the vibe of their parties - rich, warm 70s grooves that spring from the staple sounds of disco into cool, slick and psychedelic spheres. First up is Joi La Frique with the French flair of 'Family Rally', while Beard In Dust lays down some heavy slapping, cowbell toting funk with 'Calypso Boy'. On the flip, Nonna Fab ups the boogie mood with some nasty Moog action on 'Tension (Release Mix)' before Lancaster Bomber whips up a proto house storm with 'African Sauna'.

Cat: VINYLATORS 05. Rel: 22 Dec 20
  1. Extended Girl (9:06)
  2. Piano Girl (4:58)
  3. Dub Girl (5:01)
Review: Krewcial is a master of clever cut up and paste and edit jobs. He tackles a big range of old soul and disco sounds that many will know and love and he does it on labels like Gamm, Riot, We Play House and now Vinylators. 'Extended Girl' is a shoe cold classic with big trumpets and drawn out breaks all making the original that bit more club ready. 'Piano Girl' is another edit of the same tune but here with more pianos laced in - no prizes for guessing that one - and Dub Girl is a final version of the same tune that pairs things back to the bare essentials.

Little Drummer Boy

  1. Little Drummer Boy (19:39)
  2. Little Drummer Boy (version) (13:10)
Review: Norweigan nu-disco prince Lindstrom released his version of 'Little Drummer Boy' back in 2009, which was listed by The Guardian as one of the best Christmas songs of all time. It now receives its much deserved release on vinyl, courtesy of Oslo's Smalltown Supersound imprint, where the sentiment remains the same with its militaristic machine drums, vocoded lyrics and some truly mind warping 303 acid building up to its crescendo. On the flip is an alternate version which is more upbeat and dancefloor friendly with its crisp 707 beats beneath a mesmerising Wurlitzer melody.

  2. Zombie Sex Dream (instrumental) (6:00)
  3. Hung Man (5:30)
  4. Bloodbath (6:51)
Review: Locossolus is the DJ Harvey project that deals in club-slaying dark disco sounds. It's been a while since we heard from it and now 'Exhumed' marks the second release on Bassett's HGS label, which launched back in August. Featuring Tara Selleck and Sam Fox on vocals, alongside Dan Hastie on keyboard, 'Zombie Sex Dream' opens up with darkly futuristic synths echoing into a void. It's tense, taught electronic music with flourishes of lush keys and breath-y vocals. 'Hung Man' then has pulling, sonar like bass and searching synths spraying out into the night and 'Bloodbath' closes in mysterious, creepy fashion.

Hangin' On A String

  1. Hangin' On A String (Frankie Knuckles club mix) (6:26)
  2. Hangin' On A String (Frankie Knuckles Classic club reprise) (6:07)
  3. Hangin' On A String (12" mix) (5:58)
Review: Put simply, Loose Ends' 1985 hit 'Hangin' On A String' is not only a peerless UK soul classic, but also one of the greatest boogie-era dancefloor cuts full stop. You should really already own a copy, but if you don't, then this South Side reissue should be on your shopping list. Not only does it contain the band's brilliant original extended mix (B2) - a sing-along gem rich in hazy organ sounds, jazzy guitar solos and bustling electro-era beats - but also two celebrated 1992 remixes from Frankie Knuckles. Both are amongst the late, great DJ/producer's finest remixes, with the more instrumental and impeccably loved-up 'Reprise' version, in which Knuckles builds gently before eventually unleashing chorus vocals, being our pick of an incredibly strong pair.
