Time Of The Season (Record Store Day Black Friday 2020)
  1. Time Of The Season (edit by Mr K) (7:41)
  2. Theme From Great Cities (edit by Mr K) (9:35)
Review: Reaching deep into the earliest foundations of his voluminous collection, Danny Krivit presents a psychedelic pop classic rearranged for today's sound systems and setlists. Recorded in the Beatles' Abbey Road studio at the height of the Summer Of Love, the Zombies' "Time Of The Season" is firmly linked in pop culture to the late '60s and the Vietnam era, although it almost never made it out to a wider audience. Ignored on its initial release, it was given a second chance by the label as the last gasp from a band that had officially split up a year before. This time around the song steadily gained fans and word-of-mouth plays in the U.S. and by the summer of 1969, two years after it had been recorded, "Time Of The Season" was ubiquitous and well on its way to being firmly enshrined as an emblem of the era.

Krivit's edit highlights the parade of lush sonic textures that ornament the hip composition, from the iconic, exquisitely echoed bass-clap-exhale riff that opens the song to the cascading Hammond organ solos of Rod Argent. Naturally, this MEU issue keeps the audio quality at its highest level, the better to appreciate these nuances. "It's a song from my childhood that really struck a chord," Danny says. "Over the years I often played a rough edit which always seemed to go over great. The song seemed to get better and better, and age like fine wine." We agree!

From flowers and incense, we move to glass and steel. "Theme For Great Cities" envelops us in a soaring, intense groove, as emblematic of the post-punk no wave style of 1981 as "Time of the Season" was to its own era. Produced by Gong's Steve Hillage, this futuristic instrumental is a bit like Bowie's wordless works with Eno, with an added downtown edge. "The original really struck me," Danny recalls, "especially at Roxy in the early '80s hip hop nights, on that Richard Long sound system... It really blew me away with its atmosphere!"

Danny's edit combines the lean and mean original with a trackier remixed version, cleanly lifting off on an epic ride that clocks in at nearly ten minutes. With the revised rhythm section and its quick-punched low end sandwiching the meat of the original's punishing drums and aggressive, picked bass line, Mr. K gives us the best of the expanded sonics of the remix without losing the atmospherics of the original take.

North Of Loreto Edits Vol 3
Cat: NOLOEDITS 03. Rel: 27 Nov 20
  1. Taccin De Taims (8:05)
  2. Infatuescion (6:30)
  3. Du Iu Uont (3:20)
Review: Italian rapper, disc jockey and record producer Davide Bassi is the man behind the new Com Era Italy label. His third missive is another trip back to the sound of his youth, the disco, electro, funk and soul of the 80s that still sounds so hot in 2020. 'Taccin De Taims' kicks off with nice dirty boogie bass and happy chords that ease you into a sweet vibe. 'Infatuescion' will be recognisable to fans of Omar S who has sampled the vocal on his own work. Lastly, 'Du Iu Uont' is a jittery disco jam with charity, cold as ice perc and nice retro synths. Warmth comes from the lead hook and funky bass, both of which make this another gem.

I'm In Love
Cat: NKS 728. Rel: 27 Nov 20
  1. I'm In Love (Yoshioka Dynamite Japan Gimmick edit) (4:55)
  2. Appeal To You (Yoshioka Dynamite Japan 7" version) (4:08)
Review: Aru Takamura wanted to be a singer from her early teenage years and she soon made it happen. She had a few albums out and many EPs in the 80s and always brought a unique sound to soul. She later settled on singing in her native Japanese tongue but on the lead single here 'I'm In Love' she also dropped in a bit of English, specifically on the big chorus. The tune is a vibrant disco banger here touched up by Yoshioka Dynamite, who also tackles the more downbeat and sentimental 'Appeal To You' with its harmonica melodies and bubbling synth bass.

  1. Don't You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come (3:39)
  2. Try To Leave Me If You Can (4:31)
Review: The amount of ultra-rare, hard to find, essential Northern Soul classics seems to be infinite. Here comes another reissue that aims to right that wrong with an officially licensed pair of tunes from the Phase One Network that has artwork based on the original promo version. 'Don't You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come' is brimming with soul and immediately swells your heart with its elegant strings, graceful piano chords and swirling sense of groove all lifting you off your feet. 'Try To Leave Me If You Can' is a heartbroken slow song to conjure up memories of all the loves you've lost, or maybe never had.

Review: Legendary New York club Studio 54 has launched a new series that will deal in all the sorts of dazzling disco sounds that would have been heard in the fashionable hotspot back in its heyday. First up is this Night Magic collection with 2020 mixes of all the classics. It shares a name with the five-month Brooklyn Museum exhibition that premiered on March 13, then shut because of Corona, and is due to re-open sometime soon. Until then, get up and then get down to the soul, funk and disco fusions presented here - they ooze authenticity but all boast crisp modern production.

  1. Why Can't We Live Together (4:39)
  2. Why Can't We Live Together (LNTG No More Work rework - Late Nite Tuff Guy edit) (6:59)
Review: Second time around for Late Nite Tuff Guy's popular rework of Timmy Thomas' anti-war classic, "Why Can't We Live Together", which first appeared in stores four years ago. This time round it's been issued on striking yellow vinyl, though the track listing remains the same. The Australian's revision is undeniably aimed at contemporary dancefloors, with Thomas' impassioned vocals and lo-fi organ motifs sitting atop a lolloping, pared-back disco-house groove. It's undeniably effective and done rather tastefully, though some listeners will still prefer Thomas' original version. Happily, that's been included on side A so you get the best of both worlds.

  4. Testify (Alan Dixon remix) (6:57)
Review: Had it not been for the cursed pandemic, Davie's 'Testify' - a righteous fusion of neo-soul, gospel and nu-disco - would have been an anthem throughout the many festivals dotted around the Adriatic and the Mediterranean. Here the superb original is twisted into even more celebratory new dancefloor shapes across another essential EP. Mousse T sets the tone by turning it into a jazzy, percussive and stomping chunk of disco-house pleasure, before KDA re-imagines it as a thrusting, hard-edged house loop jam that wisely showcases Davie's inspired bassline. Over on the flip, Danny Krivit gets out his scalpel and successfully extends the mid-tempo original, while Alex Dixon pops a pill or two and reworks it into a rushing piano-house special.

  1. Never Gonna Fall In Love Again (Like I Fell In Love With You) (feat Vanessa Haynes) (6:25)
  2. Never Gonna Fall In Love Again (Like I Fell In Love With You) (Disco instrumental) (6:13)
Review: This record is a re-make of a Carmen Amez disco and boogie gem from 1983. The original goes for well over L200 and isn't even that good a pressing. This cover first saw the light of day as a 12" in September that was only acquired by certain DJs. It soon started trading for high prices as people wondered what the hell it was, who it was by, and whether it was a shifty bootleg. That's all resolved now as it gets a proper out with a freshly re-recorded version with strings, horns, bells, whistles and Vanessa Haynes on vocals. It's a lush bit of floor filling heart swelling disco, funk and soul gold with soaring strings to boot.

  1. Gotta Dance (5:20)
  2. I Need Your Love (6:36)
Review: More edit action from Richy Ahmed and Jansons' hush-hush Lovehrtz project, which has previously seen them given the disco-house treatment to tracks by Gino Soccio and The Supermen Lovers, amongst others. Volume three of the self-titled series opens with "Gotta Dance", a loopy chunky of synth-heavy Euro-disco-goes-house cheeriness rich in undulating electronic lead lines, echoing drum hits, arpeggio style bass and a sparkling female lead vocal. Their Italo-disco influence is explored further on muscular flipside "I Need Your Love", a sweaty late-night affair in which selected male and female vocal snippets, and ear-catching melodic motifs ride a thrusting electronic bassline and all-action mid-80s drums.

Review: Enois Scroggins was an American funk and gospel singer from Tulsa, Oklakhoma who developed his own style that he called 'E-Funk'. He passed away in 2019 due to a heart attack, but his legacy certainly lives on, with French label Dd Lahouve Production reissuing some of his finest work here from back in 2012. The neon-lit boogie-down vibe of 'Under My Skin' (featuring Misty Lane) will get you moving with its proper west coast flavour - he was said to be based in Los Angeles for most of his career. On the flip, the low slung disco funk of 'Love Is You' (vocal) provides more reliable mood music.

Review: Actor and composer Marshall Titus is originally from Chicago and has been a professional singer since 1979. In 1984 he had his biggest hit, ' Take A Chance', but this brand new music shows he hasn't lost his magic touch over the course of the last 36 years. 'Everybody' is a feel good boogie gem, a disco tune with nice organic rhythm section, plenty of bog chords and a busy bassline that does plenty to get you moving. DD Lahouve has taken care of the brilliantly authentic production, which is fresh and modern but instilled with that realness we all love from the 70s.

Review: After having released their debut EP last year, Munich's Public Possession are proud to present Stockholm duo Aksel & Aino's first full length titled Lullabies for Submarines. Described as a 'grand tale of companionship', the combination of Aksel's instrumentation and Aino's poetry remains upbeat and looks to a bright future. From the glassy-eyed, bittersweet and Krafterk-y 'Dancing Grass', the slo-mo disco of 'Fewiopia', Italo influenced flavour of 'Spallanzani' plus some Metro Area influenced melancholia on the cover of Roxette's pop classic 'Fading Like A Flower'. Forever enjoying memories of long nights, brief encounters, bright moments and extreme euphoria.

Review: Paul 'Mudd' Murphy and Simon Purnell's Leng Records turned ten earlier in the year, so they've decided to mark the occasion by drawing together tracks from the last decade - most previously released, but some unheard - that deftly showcase the label's ear-pleasing mix of psychedelic, Balearic, cosmic and dub disco influences. Highlights come thick and fast, from the dubbed-out insanity of the Idjut Boys vintage remix of 'Mountain' and Mudd's chugging, acid-fired 'Slow Rave Mix' of Tiago's 'The Source', to the hypnotic pscyh-disco exotica of Ali Kuru's 'Luna' and the hazy Bay Area disco-chug of Ali Kuru's 'Luna'. Vinyl copies of the album come shipped with a bonus 10-inch containing cuts from recent label signings Lex (not to be confused with Lexx) and Harvey Couture.

Review: You can always rely on Whiskey Pickle for some of that playful weirdness and this time out it is prolific Italian producer DJ Rocca who serves up the musical thrills and spills. 'Detox' is an old school, 80s sounding synth heavy jam with poly rhythms and tropical feelings that lead to steamy dance floors. Things stay retro with 'Tropicale 17' which has a nice shimmery electro beat, arpeggiated bell sounds and naturalistic jungle motifs that take you to another world. Remixing it is long time disco dons Chicken Lips, who smooths things out to go for a more extended and slow burning cosmic journey.

'Exotica' is a timeless disco cut with something for everyone - strident drum grooves, nice tropical percussion, well treated vocals and vocoders and cosmic synth explosions. The instrumental removes the call and response vocal but either one of these is destined for big things well into the New Year and beyond.

Review: The irrepressible Gamm label have said that all profits from this release will be handed to charity in Paul 'Trouble' Anderson's honour. It's a super EP of edits by UK legend Ashley Beedle who teams up with his pal Abi Clarke. The opener is a real gem that reworks the buttery tones of Barry White with real sympathy, 'Hold Fast' is then a glossy r&b tinged slow motion disco tune with steamy and sensors vocals and a fine funky bass riff, then closing the show is a classy boogie anthem
'Yes Indeed (Rock Free For Trouble)' from Steve Arrington that dazzles and pleases in equal measure.

Review: The shadowy Black Rox label out of Brighton returns after two years silence with some more dusty deep house delights that place the Black roots of the music front and centre. That's especially true of A side cut 'This Poem (Roots Unit alternative version)', which reframes the classic Bobby Konders track and the iconic 'Dis Poem' by Mutabaruka. This 2020 update drapes the track in plush swathes of string pads and undulating percussion perfect for mellower moments on and off the floor. Then Roots Unit tackle further aspects of Jamaican music culture with 'Trenchtown Double Down (Roots Unit Stepping Razor Version)', which samples a spread of vocal samples and straps them to a sparse but funky groove.

The last one featured some awesome tracks by the likes of Kito Jempere and Carrot Green, but on Vol. II there's a Sunday open-air festival vibe. Before that, she's decided to finally treat us to a vinyl version of recent single "Murphy's Law" - an ultra-sweet slab of groovy deep disco smothered in rich instrumentation, all topped off by one of her near perfect lead vocals. Barratt's warm and tender original mix proudly sits on the flipside, with a superb Cosmodelica Remix on the "A". This is a brighter and breezier affair, with squelchy synth-bass and springy old-school house piano parts being joined by Murphy's addictive vocal and selected instrumental snippets from Barratt and studio partner Dave Lewin's album version.
