Cat: N 1004. Rel: 10 Nov 20
  1. Summertime (3:47)
  2. Summertime (instrumental) (4:06)
Review: It's been a weird summer for sure in 2020, but you can improve yours by a guaranteed 100% with the addition of this hard to fine and often expensive 1980 great. High Frequency was a disco offshoot of Aleem, a boogie-funk, r&b and dance music trio formed in New York City. "Summertime" is the sort of bristling and infectious disco cut even the stony hearted can enjoy. The funky bassline, the feel good vocals, the lush chords - it's a real pearl of a track. The instrumental is just as feel good and uplifting. What a 7" this is.

Review: After having released their debut EP last year, Munich's Public Possession are proud to present Stockholm duo Aksel & Aino's first full length titled Lullabies for Submarines. Described as a 'grand tale of companionship', the combination of Aksel's instrumentation and Aino's poetry remains upbeat and looks to a bright future. From the glassy-eyed, bittersweet and Krafterk-y 'Dancing Grass', the slo-mo disco of 'Fewiopia', Italo influenced flavour of 'Spallanzani' plus some Metro Area influenced melancholia on the cover of Roxette's pop classic 'Fading Like A Flower'. Forever enjoying memories of long nights, brief encounters, bright moments and extreme euphoria.

Rarities Vol II
  1. Benjamin Froehlich - "Tivoli" (Johannes Albert remix) (6:45)
  2. Kayroy - "Identification Unknown" (feat Miela - Johannes Albert DJ edit) (6:21)
  3. Rydim - "Fomo" (Johannes Albert remix) (6:46)
  4. Leon Revol - "Acid Is Rolling" (Johannes Albert remix) (6:48)
Review: Frank Music look to main man Johannes Albert for the second volume of their Rarities series and he covers plenty of musical ground in the process. First up, Benjamin Frohlich's 'Tivoli' gets a super upbeat and summery 4/4 disco re-treatment to kick things off, before Albert steps up again to tackle Kayroy's 'Identification Unknown' with future-facing disco synths. The version of 'Fomo' he serves up is more dirty and danceable, with acid lines and twinkling arps. Last of all, Albert's remix of Leon Revol - 'Acid Is Rolling' is an undulating cut with muscular beats and crispy snares.

Rockin Poppin Full Tilting (Record Store Day 2020)

  1. Rockin - Poppin Full Tilting (part 1) (3:41)
  2. Rockin - Poppin Full Tilting (part 2) (2:44)
Review: This is a super sought after slice of 1980s disco goodness that was sampled by UK house producer Midland. He used bits of it on his huge, and we mean huge, 2016 summer anthem 'Final Credits' and that only served to send the price of the original up further. You'd be lucky if you can find an original copy of the 7" for under L125 these days. This official reissue has your back though and has been fully remastered with replica artwork in time to celebrates the 40th anniversary of its original release.

  3. Fair Weather Friend (3:04)
Review: You'll struggle to find many cosmic boogie/jazz-funk records rarer than Azwon's 1980 debut single, a private press gem from Florida that has long been in demand amongst collectors. Here the finest track from that double A-side seven-inch, "Paradise Island", is given the reissue treatment. It's worth picking up, not only for the swirling, spaced-out brilliance of the original version of "Paradise Island", but also the slightly bolder, Latin-tinged "Revisited" version the band re-recorded last year for this very release. The production is very similar, sound wise, meaning it's every bit as spaced out as the cut they made 40 years ago. Bonus cut "Fair Weather Friend", a dancefloor-focused jazz-funk workout recorded but not released in 1980, is also rather good.

Review: Second time around for Banda Achilifunk and Original Jazz Orquestra's sought-after 2011 cover of disco classic "I Believe in Miracles", original copies of which now change hands for serious sums online. The expansive Spanish crew's baggy, sun-kissed and rumba-soaked Latin disco cover of the Jackson Sisters' classic is perfectly pitched, adding layers of crunchy Clavinets and punchy horns to a sumptuously summery groove. Over on the flip we get two different takes on McFadden & Whitehead classic "Ain't No Stopping Us Now": a decidedly Balearic Spanish language cover ("No Nos Pararas"), and an instrumental cover full to bursting with superb grooves and even more scintillating horn solos.

  1. Don't You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come (3:39)
  2. Try To Leave Me If You Can (4:31)
Review: The amount of ultra-rare, hard to find, essential Northern Soul classics seems to be infinite. Here comes another reissue that aims to right that wrong with an officially licensed pair of tunes from the Phase One Network that has artwork based on the original promo version. 'Don't You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come' is brimming with soul and immediately swells your heart with its elegant strings, graceful piano chords and swirling sense of groove all lifting you off your feet. 'Try To Leave Me If You Can' is a heartbroken slow song to conjure up memories of all the loves you've lost, or maybe never had.

Review: The irrepressible Gamm label have said that all profits from this release will be handed to charity in Paul 'Trouble' Anderson's honour. It's a super EP of edits by UK legend Ashley Beedle who teams up with his pal Abi Clarke. The opener is a real gem that reworks the buttery tones of Barry White with real sympathy, 'Hold Fast' is then a glossy r&b tinged slow motion disco tune with steamy and sensors vocals and a fine funky bass riff, then closing the show is a classy boogie anthem
'Yes Indeed (Rock Free For Trouble)' from Steve Arrington that dazzles and pleases in equal measure.

Review: This essential compilation from Africa Seven does a terrific job in highlighting the genuinely unique, dancefloor-focused music recorded by Cameroonian musician Joe Bisso following his move to the United States in the early 1970s. Often heavily percussive, the 14 tracks combine elements of Congolese rumba, Afrobeat and Afro-funk with James Brown style heavy funk and the then emerging sound of underground NYC disco. Highlights are plentiful, from the Moog-laden, Latin-tinged-disco flavours of 'Disco Madonna' and the flash-fried disco-funk extravaganza that is 'Don't Fight The Feeling', to the solo-laden heaviness of Afro-disco banger 'Midnight' and the breathy, seductive goodness of 'Your Love (Part 1)'.

  2. Trenchtown Double Down (Roots Unit Stepping Razor version) (6:47)
Review: The shadowy Black Rox label out of Brighton returns after two years silence with some more dusty deep house delights that place the Black roots of the music front and centre. That's especially true of A side cut 'This Poem (Roots Unit alternative version)', which reframes the classic Bobby Konders track and the iconic 'Dis Poem' by Mutabaruka. This 2020 update drapes the track in plush swathes of string pads and undulating percussion perfect for mellower moments on and off the floor. Then Roots Unit tackle further aspects of Jamaican music culture with 'Trenchtown Double Down (Roots Unit Stepping Razor Version)', which samples a spread of vocal samples and straps them to a sparse but funky groove.

  2. 6000 Ft (5:40)
Review: Simon 'Bonobo' Green launches his own label Outlier, operating under the umbrella of Ninja Tune, the label - along with Tru Thoughts - that he's been most closely associated with. To kick things off, he's cooked up something suitably sizable with pal Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. Lead cut 'Heartbreak' is an absolute beast and sounds like a future anthem in the making. Supposedly intended as a tribute to NYC disco but arguably nothing of the sort, it sees the pair pepper a bustling, bass-heavy, rave-style breakbeat groove with organ stabs, sparkling synth sounds and choice vocal snippets from Classic Action classic 'Weekend'. They explore far deeper, drowsier territory on the atmospheric, melody-driven flipside, '6000 Ft', once again opting to employ waves of colourful electronics and chunky low-end sounds.

Review: BPlan & Fab_o made a fine debut on their own Caffee Ciorretto Edits label and now they follow it up with another glistening four tracker. 'Santos' is the bright and breezy opener with a rubbery grove and retro-future chords, then 'Your Coffee' sinks into a more freewheeling, languid groove tinged with Afro exoticism and a steamy vocal. Review: Joaquin Joe Claussell's Unofficial Edits & Overdubs Special Extended Versions series rolls on with a fourth of six parts. It's proven a real gold mine so far, with endless amounts of gospel tinged house and super spiritual grooves getting all who hear it to a high state of consciousness. There are plenty of jazzy overtones to the opener here, 'Come Sunday', which is laden with afro percussion and big horns. It's a steel drum affair on Pheeroan Aklaff 's 'L' that is brilliantly tropical, then there's trident funk from The Kay-gees and a lush bit of fusion from the ever excellent Leroy Hutson.

  4. Testify (Alan Dixon remix) (6:57)
Review: Had it not been for the cursed pandemic, Davie's 'Testify' - a righteous fusion of neo-soul, gospel and nu-disco - would have been an anthem throughout the many festivals dotted around the Adriatic and the Mediterranean. Here the superb original is twisted into even more celebratory new dancefloor shapes across another essential EP. Mousse T sets the tone by turning it into a jazzy, percussive and stomping chunk of disco-house pleasure, before KDA re-imagines it as a thrusting, hard-edged house loop jam that wisely showcases Davie's inspired bassline. Over on the flip, Danny Krivit gets out his scalpel and successfully extends the mid-tempo original, while Alex Dixon pops a pill or two and reworks it into a rushing piano-house special.

Review: Diego Cortez Salas is DJ and producer from Brussels that has been making waves in recent times with some awesome releases for imprints such as Live At Robert Johnson, Correspondent and River Rapid. His new one comes courtesy of new Parisian label Slowciety, featuring more of his trademark blend of classic Balearic house and dark disco. Opening with the moody Italo influenced groove of 'Exquisite Chaos' and the strobe-lit euphoria of 'Undivided' with its infectious 303 acid throughout (there's an epic remix by Frankfurt legend Roman Fluegel later on, too). Things take a more ominous turn on the flip, with the neon-lit dancefloor drama of 'Forgotten Memories' and its muscular EBM bassline.

Review: It's pretty brave to call your record A New Paradigm but that's what Luca Dell'Orso has done here and he provides enough musical evidence to have a fairly strong case. His vision of disco is one seen through a retro lens, with glossy chords and pixelated leads. It's the future as we imagined it might be back in the 80s, but somehow it still slid fresh. Chicago claps and pop hooks, tense basslines and melancholic moods all feature along the way and make this an expansive and journeying record that strikes all the right emotional and dramatic notes.

  2. Never Gonna Fall In Love Again (Like I Fell In Love With You) (Disco instrumental) (6:13)
Review: This record is a re-make of a Carmen Amez disco and boogie gem from 1983. The original goes for well over L200 and isn't even that good a pressing. This cover first saw the light of day as a 12" in September that was only acquired by certain DJs. It soon started trading for high prices as people wondered what the hell it was, who it was by, and whether it was a shifty bootleg. That's all resolved now as it gets a proper out with a freshly re-recorded version with strings, horns, bells, whistles and Vanessa Haynes on vocals. It's a lush bit of floor filling heart swelling disco, funk and soul gold with soaring strings to boot.

Review: Japan's DJ Kawasaki links up with Monday Michuru for a new house come disco tune that is full of big vocal delights. The funky riffs are knotted and infectious, the rickety rhythm section nice and loose and the synth motifs all filled with charm and colour, It's a perfectly feel good tune that will make you dance any woes away. Review: You can always rely on Whiskey Pickle for some of that playful weirdness and this time out it is prolific Italian producer DJ Rocca who serves up the musical thrills and spills. 'Detox' is an old school, 80s sounding synth heavy jam with poly rhythms and tropical feelings that lead to steamy dance floors. Things stay retro with 'Tropicale 17' which has a nice shimmery electro beat, arpeggiated bell sounds and naturalistic jungle motifs that take you to another world. Remixing it is long time disco dons Chicken Lips, who smooths things out to go for a more extended and slow burning cosmic journey.

Review: The Filament crew are Amsterdam based purveyors of nu-disco, who have returned with the second edition in their electrifying various artists series. The last one featured some awesome tracks by the likes of Kito Jempere and Carrot Green, but on Vol. II there's a Sunday open-air festival vibe. The label head honchos themselves go deep into the exotic, Disco Halal style, on '4:28 PM' and Glowing Palms bring on the sunset in neon-lit fashion on '6:04 PM'. On the flip, Super Drama goes deeper into the night by getting some noir-ish Italo disco vibes happening on '9:37 PM' and Ghostwhip takes over the closing set with a curveball in the form of UK garage influence stepper '10:56 PM'.

Review: The Disco Hamam label is back with another instalment of its much loved set titled series. The sixth part is another sizzler that opens with an edit by Hotaru which pairs funky bass with ticketing percussion to make for a house and disco hybrid. Red Lebanese's 'Belle Vie' is a strident affair with crashing hits and more mangled synth work. Cornelius Doctor & Tushen Rai then slow things down on the dirty and low slung 'Fekete,' a darkened prowler for when the lights are low. They also link up once more for 'Salaam Sholay!', a glistening track of shiny electronics and gritty bass.

Review: The latest featured editor to contribute to Magic Wand's Special Editions series is former Public Possession regular - and recent Internasjonal signing - Anton Klint. As you'd perhaps expect, the tracks he's chosen to rework tend towards the eccentric and more crate-digging end of the Balearic spectrum. For proof, check the slip-sliding fretless bass, bubbly drum machine rhythms and AOR-goes-synth-pop vibes of opener 'Rain', the sax-laden, mid-80s AM radio goodness of 'Special O', and the lolloping, late night soft rock-meets-reggae pop brilliance of 'Marie'. Best of all though is 'Full Dose of Love', an extra-percussive, delay-laden chunk of undulating dub that's just crying out to be played loud at sunset.

Review: More edit action from Richy Ahmed and Jansons' hush-hush Lovehrtz project, which has previously seen them given the disco-house treatment to tracks by Gino Soccio and The Supermen Lovers, amongst others. Volume three of the self-titled series opens with "Gotta Dance", a loopy chunky of synth-heavy Euro-disco-goes-house cheeriness rich in undulating electronic lead lines, echoing drum hits, arpeggio style bass and a sparkling female lead vocal. Their Italo-disco influence is explored further on muscular flipside "I Need Your Love", a sweaty late-night affair in which selected male and female vocal snippets, and ear-catching melodic motifs ride a thrusting electronic bassline and all-action mid-80s drums.

He brings all that knowledge and old school experience to everything he does, including this new one on Italy's IRMA. 'Running In A Circle' (feat Black Sosa) is a slow motion and lavish groove with rump-wiggling drums stuffing hits all overlaid with a languid but alluring male vocal. On the flip is

Time Of The Season (Record Store Day Black Friday 2020)
  1. Time Of The Season (edit by Mr K) (7:41)
  2. Theme From Great Cities (edit by Mr K) (9:35)
Review: Reaching deep into the earliest foundations of his voluminous collection, Danny Krivit presents a psychedelic pop classic rearranged for today's sound systems and setlists. Recorded in the Beatles' Abbey Road studio at the height of the Summer Of Love, the Zombies' "Time Of The Season" is firmly linked in pop culture to the late '60s and the Vietnam era, although it almost never made it out to a wider audience. Ignored on its initial release, it was given a second chance by the label as the last gasp from a band that had officially split up a year before. This time around the song steadily gained fans and word-of-mouth plays in the U.S. and by the summer of 1969, two years after it had been recorded, "Time Of The Season" was ubiquitous and well on its way to being firmly enshrined as an emblem of the era.

Krivit's edit highlights the parade of lush sonic textures that ornament the hip composition, from the iconic, exquisitely echoed bass-clap-exhale riff that opens the song to the cascading Hammond organ solos of Rod Argent. Naturally, this MEU issue keeps the audio quality at its highest level, the better to appreciate these nuances. "It's a song from my childhood that really struck a chord," Danny says. "Over the years I often played a rough edit which always seemed to go over great. The song seemed to get better and better, and age like fine wine." We agree!

From flowers and incense, we move to glass and steel. "Theme For Great Cities" envelops us in a soaring, intense groove, as emblematic of the post-punk no wave style of 1981 as "Time of the Season" was to its own era. Produced by Gong's Steve Hillage, this futuristic instrumental is a bit like Bowie's wordless works with Eno, with an added downtown edge. "The original really struck me," Danny recalls, "especially at Roxy in the early '80s hip hop nights, on that Richard Long sound system... It really blew me away with its atmosphere!"

Danny's edit combines the lean and mean original with a trackier remixed version, cleanly lifting off on an epic ride that clocks in at nearly ten minutes. With the revised rhythm section and its quick-punched low end sandwiching the meat of the original's punishing drums and aggressive, picked bass line, Mr. K gives us the best of the expanded sonics of the remix without losing the atmospherics of the original take.

  1. Murphy's Law (Cosmodelica remix) (7:45)
  2. Murphy's Law (8:02)
Review: In early September, Roisin Murphy will release her first album in four years, "Roisin Machine", a set of stellar songs produced by long-time collaborator Richard Barratt AKA Crooked Man. Before that, she's decided to finally treat us to a vinyl version of recent single "Murphy's Law" - an ultra-sweet slab of groovy deep disco smothered in rich instrumentation, all topped off by one of her near perfect lead vocals. Barratt's warm and tender original mix proudly sits on the flipside, with a superb Cosmodelica Remix on the "A". This is a brighter and breezier affair, with squelchy synth-bass and springy old-school house piano parts being joined by Murphy's addictive vocal and selected instrumental snippets from Barratt and studio partner Dave Lewin's album version.

Dave Lee Presents 30 Years Of Z Records EP 5
  1. Joey Negro - "Stomp Your Feet" (Hot Toddy remix) (8:27)
  2. Loose Change - "Straight From The Heart" (Joey Negro Straight To The Groove mix) (6:30)
  3. Joey Negro presents The Sunburst Band - "Journey To The Sun" (Dennis Ferrer remix) (6:24)
  4. Gwen Guthrie - "What A Life" (Joey Negro remix) (6:24)
Review: Dave Lee continues to mark the 30th birthday of his Z Records imprint via a series of compilation style EPs featuring a mixture of overlooked remixes, new revisions and personal favourites. As you'd perhaps expect, the fifth 12" in the series is every bit as essential as its predecessors. The EP features two classic revisions of Lee's productions: a storming nu-disco revision of Joey Negro's 'Stomp Your Feet' by Crazy P's Chris Todd AKA Hot Toddy, and a hypnotic, muscular and heavily electronic late-night house re-fix of the Sunbrust Band's 'Journey to the Sun'. The other two tracks see Lee turn remixer, first for a euphoric, house-friendly revision of Loose Change disco classic 'Straight From The Heart', and then for a boogie-tastic version of Gwen Guthrie's 1983 cover of Gibson Brothers' classic 'What a Life'.

  3. Du Iu Uont (3:20)
Review: Italian rapper, disc jockey and record producer Davide Bassi is the man behind the new Com Era Italy label. His third missive is another trip back to the sound of his youth, the disco, electro, funk and soul of the 80s that still sounds so hot in 2020. 'Taccin De Taims' kicks off with nice dirty boogie bass and happy chords that ease you into a sweet vibe. 'Infatuescion' will be recognisable to fans of Omar S who has sampled the vocal on his own work. Lastly, 'Du Iu Uont' is a jittery disco jam with charity, cold as ice perc and nice retro synths. Warmth comes from the lead hook and funky bass, both of which make this another gem.

  4. C Da Afro - "Street Jam" (6:05)
Review: Tropical Disco marks hitting release number 20 with a brilliant four track various artists affair that offers up plenty of the colourful and cosmic disco sounds they have become so well known and loved for. Paul Older kick off with 'Nothing,' which is a rolling and trumpet laced jam to fill the floor. 'One For Frida' gets more deep and dubby, with more big horns but a flabbier and more silky groove to sink into. On the flip, it's all majestic leads and noodling solos for the twinkling disco sounds of the late night roller 'Shiva's Chant' while 'Street Jam' closes out in smooth, string laced and seductive fashion.

Review: Groovin Records have dug deep t unearth this sleazy boogie and disco number from Plastic Pertrand. It's richly detailed with some killer synth work and a slow motion vocal that recalls when Blondie rapped on Rapture. The bass is super low slung and the claps inviting. It's a libidinous and steamy and the sort of tune that cannot fiat to get big reactions from the floor. As well as an extended version of the original, an instrumental is included for more late night lovers.

  1. In My Arms (extended mix) (6:16)
  2. In My Arms (instrumental) (6:15)
Review: It would be fair to say that there are few bigger contemporary disco producers than Purple Disco Machine. His particular brand of revivalist disco offers a near perfect balance of 1970s style instrumentation and contemporary dancefloor chops, thus delivering timeless tracks that guarantee good times for all those who hear them. "In My Arms" is a great example of this. It's authentic - walking bassline, swooping Salsoul strings, gospel-influenced piano riffs and so on - but also boasts builds and drops more associated with rush-inducing house anthems. Of the two versions it's the celebratory, full vocal "Extended Mix" that we'd recommend, though the instrumental take is pretty tidy too.

  2. Exotica (instrumental) (6:24)
Review: This one has been long delayed due to Purple Disco Machine's previous tune 'Hypnotised' blowing up the worldwide spot, but finally it sees the light of day and is only likely to further fuel the hype ardour the guy. 'Exotica' is a timeless disco cut with something for everyone - strident drum grooves, nice tropical percussion, well treated vocals and vocoders and cosmic synth explosions. The instrumental removes the call and response vocal but either one of these is destined for big things well into the New Year and beyond.

  1. Let Me Down Easy (2:54)
  2. Let Me Down Easy (long version) (4:39)
Review: If you love your disco sweet, soulful and string-drenched, you really need a copy of Rare Pleasure's 1976 debut single, 'Let Me Down Easy', in your life. This reissue from South Street Disco is therefore essential to all those who've not snagged an original copy. It features both the seven-inch and 12-inch mixes (A and B respectively); both feature deliciously emotional female lead vocals, a killer disco groove, wah-wah style funk guitar licks, sumptuous instrumentation and a jangling piano riff that was later used by David Morales on his '90s house anthem 'Needin' U'. It's a breathtakingly brilliant disco record, so don't sleep on this "45" reissue.

Review: Summer is but a distant memory in real terms, but in musical terms we can bring back the sunshine whenever we fancy. And that's what Marc Roberts does and then some here with four poolside classics. They follow on from Austin Ato's smasher for the label's first release in fine style with opener 'Jogging Back 2 U' full of bendy bass and heart-wrenching vocals. 'Foolio Paradiso' then layers up glossy chords and retro twins stabs with a sentimental r&b vocal that brings the love. The late night cool of 'Foolio Paradiso' has an exotic feel that will have you reaching for the cocktails and last of all '1&O' brings the funk.
