1000 Record Covers
1000 Record Covers (hardback book)
Cat: 661777 Rel: 01 Jan 90

Hardback book with 1000 of the best record covers from the 1960s to 1990s
Notes: Record covers are a sign of our life and times. Like the music on the discs, they address such issues as love, life, death, fashion, and rebellion. For music fans the covers are the expression of a period, of a particular time in their lives. Many are works of art and have become as famous as the music they stand for Andy Warhol's covers, for example, including the banana he designed for The Velvet Underground.

This edition of "Record Covers" presents a selection of the best rock album covers of the 60s to 90s from music archivist, disc jockey, journalist, and former record-publicity executive Michael Ochs' enormous private collection. Both a trip down memory lane and a study in the evolution of cover art, this is a sweeping look at an underappreciated art form.

A Jockey Slut Tribute, by Andrew Weatherall
Cat: 800802 Rel: 09 Dec 20

Paperback book
Notes: Pre-order before 20 November 2020 Release date 10 December 2020 Andrew Weatherall was the acid house generation's most inspiring DJ and producer, renowned for his work on Primal Scream's epoch-defining 'Screamadelica' and his own bands Sabres Of Paradise and Two Lone Swordsmen. As a DJ he was peerless and unpredictable, helming club nights that played techno, rockabilly or music that "never knowingly exceeded 122 bpm."

Weatherall featured in seminal dance music magazine Jockey Slut many times during its lifetime. All his interviews from the publication are included within this tribute to The Guv'nor. Further articles cover the tenure of his professional life from the mid-80s to 2020. They include his beginnings at the influential Boy's Own fanzine, his DJ sets at landmark nights Shoom and Sabresonic, and the plethora of ventures he still had running including the Woodleigh Research Project, A Love From Outer Space and festival Convenanza.

Jockey Slut magazine ran from 1993 - 2004. The influential club culture publication was started by John Burgess and Paul Benney as a self published Manchester based fanzine. It became a monthly when it moved to London in 1999. Jockey Slut was notable for being more music-centric, left-field and irreverent than other dance music magazines. It also bagged some real exclusives during its tenure giving first ever interviews to The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk and The Avalanches.

Included in the 160 page, perfect bound book edited by founding Jockey Slut editor John Burgess is:

- All Andrew Weatherall's Jockey Slut interviews collated (1993-2004) including Weatherall Gets His Tats Out, I'm A Classic Underachiever, Two Lone Swordsmen and An Audience With... and more.
- Further new features and classic articles from Luke Una, Richard Norris, Kris Needs, Joe Muggs, Jim Butler, Mandi James, Lee Brackstone and more.
- Brand new 10,000+ word oral history of Andrew Weatherall's early years from Shoom & Screamadelica to Sabres of Paradise featuring interviews with Bobby Gillespie, Ed Simons, Danny Rampling, Justin Robertson, Andrew Innes, David Holmes, Keith Tenniswood, Anna Haigh, Terry Farley and more.
- Retrospective of Andrew Weatherall's club nights Sabresonic, Bloodsugar, Double Gone Chapel, Wrong Meeting, A Love From Outer Space by John Burgess.
All proceeds from the book will go to the charities that were important to Andrew Weatherall: Amnesty International, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Thrombosis UK, Crisis.

A Soft Hiss Of This World (by Tim Ingold, Carmen Pardo & Mikel R Nieto)
Cat: 765375 Rel: 11 Jun 20

paperback book
Notes: The research project "A soft hiss of this world" is focused on the loss in many aspects such as the loss of language as a result of the Anthropocene through the absence of certain states and processes that occur naturally in the environment like different states of water, snow and ice. In Finnish there are more than forty terms* to refer to them and because of the loss of these states in the landscape, the loss is also displaced to the language, in this case, the Finnish.

This research project took these words as a starting point to make hundreds of hours of recordings in the Finnish landscape. The sound of snow, ice and snowflakes are the reference and the sound material of this research project. And to obtain these sounds, as well as the possible sound differences between each snowflake, special and specific microphones were developed for this very specific and fragile recording process.
This book contains texts by three authors: Tim Ingold, Carmen Pardo and Mikel R. Nieto, on the research carried out by Nieto in Finland during 2016. The text by Tim Ingold opens the book and introduces the reader to the main subjects of the research: language, landscape, sound and listening. This text is easy to read and aims to immerse us in the Finnish landscape and in the listening act to its sounds and silences. Carmen Pardo's text unfolds first, the way in which the gaze and listening of the snow constitute the experience of a disappearance, of a concentration in the void or nothingness of which A Soft Hiss of this World participates.

The third text belongs to Mikel R. Nieto and is divided into four parts. The third part is a code that reflects the loss of most of the sound recordings made during his research with more than 600 hours of recordings. This code is the only thing that could be recovered from all recordings, except the only sound recording published in physical format as a transparent Flexi-disc.

The fourth part is the result of silencing each and every word by John Cage in his "Lecture on Nothing," leaving only the punctuation marks, such as commas, periods, separators and the last sentence of the text of Cage. Every time the transparent flexi-disc is played, the player needle wears away the vinyl and making the sound of the recording disappear. Therefore, each listening destroys the sound."

A Time Before Crack
Cat: 212959 Rel: 01 Jan 90
Notes: Best known as hip hop's finest fashion photographer for his blockbuster best-selling monograph, "Back In The Days" Shabazz revisited his archive and unearthed an exceptional collection of never-before-published documentary photographs collected for his 3rd Powerhouse Books release, "A Time Before Crack". A visual diary of the streets for NYC from the mid-70s to the mid-80s, Shabazz's distinctive photographs reveal the families, the poses, and the players who made this age extraordinary. Once upon "A Time Before Crack", inner-city communities were blighted by poverty and unemployment but not by the drug wars that tore families apart, destroying lives with needless violence and mindless addiction. Once upon "A Time Before Crack", pride and style were as inseparable as a beatbox and mixtape, or as a pair of shoes and matching purse. Once upon "A Time Before Crack", Jamel Shabazz was on the scene, working the streets of NYC capturing the faces and places of an era that have long since disappeared.

Autumn's Sun by Loren Connors
Autumn's Sun by Loren Connors (82 page paperback book)
Cat: 789524 Rel: 07 Sep 20

The definitive edition of Loren Connors' texts.
Notes: In the mid-80s, Connors took a partial break from music and focused instead on the art of haiku, for which he received the Lafcadio Hearn Award in 1987. With his wife Suzanne Langille he also co-wrote an article on blues and haiku, "The Dancing Ear," published in the Haiku Society of America's journal. It was during this period that Connors penned the material that appears in Autumn's Sun, a chapbook first published by Thurston Moore and Byron Coley's Glass Eye in 1999. The text features diary excerpts from 1987, lyrically fragmented observations interspersed with haiku-like poems that paint an idyllic impression of the passing seasons in his home of New Haven, Connecticut. With synesthetic perception, Connors gazes from tranquil domestic streets. Sycamore, elm, and catalpa trees are activated by the breeze and made to rustle in unison with their natural and artificial surroundings, including the howling dogs from which Connors derived his "Mazzacane" moniker. As summer fades to winter, Connors portrays death as an undramatic certitude, the flux of his own maturation reflected in musings on his son's. Like his music, Autumn's Sun is tender without being sentimental, conjuring those rare, delicate moments when time stands still.

This edition includes "The Dancing Ear" and an introduction by Lawrence Kumpf.

Black Case Volume I & II: Return From Exile by Joseph Jarman
Cat: 789525 Rel: 07 Sep 20

The republication in print form of the poems of Art Ensemble of Chicago's founding member breathes new life into a forgotten document of the Black Arts Movement.
Notes: The republication in print form of the poems of Art Ensemble of Chicago's founding member breathes new life into a forgotten document of the Black Arts Movement.

In 1977, Art Ensemble of Chicago Publishing Co. published Jarman's Black Case Volume I and II: Return From Exile, a collection of writing conceived across America and Europe between 1960 and 1975. Comprised largely of Jarman's flowing, fiery free verseiinfluenced by Amus Mor, Henry Dumas, Thulani Davis, and Amiri Baraka the book also features a manifesto for "GREAT BLACK MUSIC," notated songs, concert program notes, Jarman's photos, and impressions of a play by Muhal Richard Abrams, the founder of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians of which Jarman was also an original member. Jarman writes poetry of personal revolutionary intent, aimed at routing his audience's consciousness towards growth and communication. He speaks with compassionate urgency of the struggles of growing up on Chicago's South Side, of racist police brutality and profound urban alienation, and of the responsibility he feels as a creative artist to nurture beauty and community through the heliocentric music that he considers the healing force of the universe. A practicing Buddhist and proponent of Aikido since a 1958 awakening saved him from the traumatic mental isolation of his time dropped by the US army into southeast Asia, Jarman sings praise for the self-awareness realization possible through the martial arts. With cosmic breath as its leitmotif, his poetry both encourages and embodies a complete relinquishing of ego. While some of the poems contained within Black Case have already been immortalized via performances on classic records by Jarman and Art Ensemble of Chicago, its republication in print form breathes new life into a forgotten document of the Black Arts Movement.

"Joseph Jarman, a musician of rare poetic gifts, was also a remarkable poet. Black Case, a lost treasure of the Black Arts Movement, combines protest against injustice with heart-breaking introspection and fierce commitment to the Great Black Music tradition to which Jarman contributed with gentle yet mighty force."
-Adam Shatz

"Joseph's recitation of 'Non-Cognitive Aspects of the City' (from Black Case) moved me to set the words of this poem for Baritone Voice and Orchestra and became part of the Art Ensemble of Chicago's standard repertoire. Joseph had a bold and passionate creative spirit. I feel privileged to have shared the stage with him."
-Roscoe Mitchell

"Though in reality all the words are music themselves' is the reality to which all poetry aspires, whether in verse or prose, theory or story, criticism or craft. Joseph Jarman always knew that for black musicians, which is to say black speakers, exile is our public holiday. We live through that. We live through that. Black Case is all and everything in this regard. 'Whats to say,' he says, is that 'we sing because/we love you/because we/love you/because/we love/you.' We are loved beyond judgment by the music, he says, and we say thanks."
-Fred Moten

Excuse The Mess Vol 1
Cat: 857942

Book accompaniment to Excuse The Mess compilations
Notes: Hidden Notes Records are proud to announce the release of a smorgasbord of new music in February 2022; creative collaborations born out of the award winning music podcast excuse the mess. Two compilation albums featuring 17 unique voices from contemporary music worlds and beyond...

How does a podcast = two albums worth of music?
Excuse The Mess is a music podcast with a twist - alongside your bread and butter artist interviews each guest takes on the challenge of writing a brand new piece of music on the fly, in the room and with excuse the mess host, Ben Corrigan.
They follow three rules (limitations are liberating!):
1. There can be no preplanning, it is spontaneous music making.
2. The track must be finished the same day.
3. Only one instrument can be used as a sound source but there can be electronic manipulations of it.

This release is the end result of each of those heart palpating writing sessions featuring Hannah Peel, Gold Panda, Anna Meredith, Galya Bisengalieva, Manu Delago, Robert Ames, Emily Hall, Oliver Coates, Mira Calix, Matt Calvert, Douglas Dare, Laura Jurd, Mark Lockheart, Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch, Anne Nikitin, Alev Lenz and Elliot Galvin. Released as two albums, to mirror the two series of excuse the mess in which they were made.

All the music fizzes with an energy that only fast paced work can invoke and the compositional fingerprint of each guest artist is embedded into the core of each track, whilst intermingling with Ben's own artistic voice. For anyone interested in a further delve they can go back to the podcast episode and witness the composition unfolding bit-by-bit, from the blank page to the finished piece, you are invited on that compositional journey.

Vol 1 and 2 will be released on the 4th February 2022 as digital downloads via Bandcamp and limited edition books available from some of the UK's leading Independent Record Stores ft interview extracts from podcast episodes, photos from the sessions, risograph prints, downloads and more...

First Floor Volume 1: Reflections On Electronic Music Culture by Shawn Reynaldo
Cat: 954196

First Floor is a weekly newsletter that focuses on electronic music, along with the culture and industry that surround it
Notes: Written by veteran journalist Shawn Reynaldo, First Floor is a weekly newsletter that focuses on electronic music, along with the culture and industry that surround it. Over the course of just a few years, it's become one of electronic music's most influential platforms, routinely putting many of the genre's thorniest issues under the microscope while reckoning with changes in the culture during a time of profound transformation.

A collection of Reynaldo's most thought-provoking essays, First Floor Volume 1 provides a nuanced, wide-ranging look at contemporary electronic music culture, with a particular focus on systemic issues that often go undiscussed.

Topics covered included the evolving nature of electronic music fandom and artistry, value shifts brought on by the current changing of the generational guard, the shortcomings of the modern music press and the growing gap between electronic music's foundational rhetoric and the genre's present-day norms.

Incorporating both pieces originally published in the newsletter (all of which have been updated) and exclusive new material from Reynaldo himself, the book also features a foreword by veteran artist and 3024 label founder Martyn.

Glen Sweeney's Book Of Alchemies: The Life & Times Of The Third Ear Band 1967-1973 by Luca Ferrari
Cat: 787016 Rel: 20 Aug 20

The dreams, the rise, the fall; the shadowy comeback; the end; a must for every Third Ear fan.
Notes: The life and times of the Third Ear Band. 268 pages.

Giant Sun Trolley were legends in the earliest stirrings of what became the underground in London in late 1966, coming to full flower in the summer of 1967; doubly legendary because they never recorded anything. One of them, Glen Sweeney, went on to form the Third Ear Band and remained both deeply integrated into - and a spectre at the edges of - the experimental/ psychedelic/ pop explosion that followed - and whose reverberations still echo. Their first album, Alchemy, released for a dubious EMI, won them fans for life, and their soundtrack for Roman Polanski's Macbeth - recorded with Paul Buckmaster in the band - made them famous. Then it was over. They now rate a passing mention in historic accounts, but hardly anyone knows anything more about them. But it's worth knowing. Their experiences and trajectory, as unpacked and laid out here, draw back a curtain on this most febrile and complex period of British popular music history - because they weren't products of this era but amongst its creators. Their stories are not tidy. In addition, the various witnesses to this small drama have little to lose by being honest, which they mostly are. That's what makes this book important. The core - and most of its content - is first person testimony: dozens of interviews from the time, and more recently, with the main protagonists, who reveal where they came from, what they were, what they wanted, the way they understood what was happening - and what part they played in this fascinating, marginal, instructive and all too human story - before it all fell apart. Always misfits, the Third Ear were nonetheless '60s underground family and their story is worth hearing all the way to the end. Taking Sweeny as the main character also sheds light on the mindset and the ideas flying around at the beginnings of what became the Summer of Love clearly showing its roots in American Beat culture, currents in contemporary art, proto-environmentalism, utopian politics, mysticism and, of course, drugs - though little of that is directly addressed; it's just there, holding everything else up.

A must for every Third Ear fan, this volume is comprehensive, with every gig and recording and event laid out in order and considerable detail. It's also very readable - even if you know nothing and could care less about the band. The dreams, the rise, the fall; the shadowy comeback; the end; what was lost and what was gained.

And there's character, lots of character straight from the brain to the paper. You can inhale a sense of the mechanics of hope, exploitation, psychology and history here - not because that's what the book is about (it's not; it's a gathering of facts and memories) but because they animate the testimonies and career trajectories the form of the book lays bare. It's a leaf caught in the tide - with the mundane consequences.

Included with this limited edition book is a CD containing the 6 previously unreleased tracks that were intended to have been for their third album had EMI not suddenly dropped the band as the musical climate changed. The masters were then lost and were rediscovered during the making of this book, in Denim Bridge's attic.

Highlights & Lowlights 1983-1987
Cat: 785234

Softcover book
Notes: Grim Humour was a UK fanzine which existed for eighteen editions, between 1983 and 1993. It received good reviews and favourable attention from the outset, partly due to its often sarcastic or caustic tone (which became more pronounced with later editions) and its focusing on many groups who arrived from the post-punk music landscape that originated in the DIY sensibilities of the time. Although initially assembled by a group of friends whose passion for the music they wished to document far overrode their artistic or writing skills, the fanzine soon developed in every respect and even became (inter)nationally distributed to independent record stockists, resulting in larger print runs and, with the later editions, a more semi-professional approach that never once betrayed the attitudinal stance of the early issues. This collection is dedicated to re-edited interviews, reviews and suchlike from the first ten editions, reprints of a number of the original pages, bonus material and several contributions by those who were involved with the 'zine, championed it or were part of the very same enclave it pulsated in. Due to the fact many of the original pages had colour backgrounds or were brimming with text bashed out on barely functioning typewriters, the idea of simply rewriting many of the features took hold as a sensible alternative itself open to being expanded on and contextualised. The features include interviews with The Fall, Killing Joke, Crass, Coil, 400 Blows, Sonic Youth, In The Nursery, Head Of David, Virgin Prunes, The Damned, Nick Cave, The Ramones, Fool's Dance (featuring Simon Gallup of The Cure), And Also The Trees, Alternative TV, Portion Control, Big Black and others, plus many reviews, a couple of rants and far more besides. It is hoped this book illuminates a tiny segment of a culture now long gone and never to be repeated. Given just how many of those concerned remain active to this day in one capacity or another, this is far more than a simple nostalgia trip.

Hold On To Your Dreams: Arthur Russell & The Downtown Music Scene 1973-1992
Notes: 'Hold On To Your Dreams' is the first biography of the musician and composer Arthur Russell, one of the most important but least known contributors to New York's downtown music scene during the 1970s and 1980s. With the exception of a few dance recordings, including 'Is It All Over My Face?' and 'Go Bang! #5', Russell's pioneering music was largely forgotten until the posthumous release of two albums in 2004 triggered a revival of interest, which gained momentum with the issue of additional albums and the documentary film 'Wild Combination'. Based on interviews with more than seventy of his collaborators, family members, and friends, 'Hold On To Your Dreams' provides vital new information about this singular, eccentric musician and his role in the boundary-breaking downtown music scene. Tim Lawrence traces Russell's odyssey from his hometown of Oskaloosa, Iowa; to countercultural San Francisco; and eventually to New York, where he lived from 1973 until his death from AIDS-related complications in 1992. Resisting definition while dreaming of commercial success, Russell wrote and performed new wave and disco as well as quirky rock, twisted folk, voice-cello dub, and hip-hop inflected pop. Composer Philip Glass comments that he was way ahead of other people in understanding that the walls between concert music, popular music and the avant-garde were illusory: 'He lived in a world in which those walls weren't there'. Lawrence follows Russell across musical genres and through such vital downtown music spaces as the Kitchen, the Loft, the Gallery, the Paradise Garage, and the Experimental Intermedia Foundation. Along the way, he captures Russell's openness to sound, his commitment to collaboration, and his uncompromising idealism. Tim Lawrence leads the Music Culture: Theory and Production degree program at the University of East London. He is the author of 'Love Saves the Day: A History of American Dance Music Culture, 1970-1979', also published by Duke University Press.

Hot Stuff: Disco & The Making Of American Culture
Cat: 412682 Rel: 01 Jan 90

Book introduces soundtracks and spotlights the work of precursors James Brown and Isaac Hayes, Donna Summer, the women of Labelle and Sylvester (338 pages, hardback, black & white/colour)
Notes: Disco thumps back to life in this pulsating exploration of the culture and politics of the glitterball world.

In the 1970s, as the disco tsunami engulfed America, the once-innocent question, Do you wanna dance? became divisive, even explosive. What was it about this much-maligned music that made it such hot stuff? In this incisive history, Alice Echols captures the felt experience of the Disco Yearsion dance floors both fabulous and tacky, at the movies, in the streets, and beneath the sheets.

Disco may have presented itself as shallow and disposableithe platforms, polyester, and plastic vibe of it allibut Echols shows that it was inseparable from the emergence of gay macho, a rising black middle class and a growing, if equivocal, openness about female sexuality. The disco scene carved out a haven for gay men who reclaimed their sexuality on dance floors where they had once been surveilled and harassed; it thrust black women onto center stage as some of the genre's most prominent stars; and it paved the way for the opening of Studio 54 and the viral popularity of the shoestring-budget Saturday Night Fever, a movie that challenged traditional notions of masculinity, even for heterosexuals.

As it provides a window onto the cultural milieu of the times, the Hot Stuff never loses sight of the era's defining soundtrack, which propelled popular music into new sonic territory, influencing everything from rap and rock to techno and trance. Throughout, Echols spotlights the work of precursors James Brown and Isaac Hayes, dazzling divas Donna Summer and the women of Labelle and some of disco's lesser known but no less illustrious performers such as Sylvester. After turning the final page of this fascinating account of the music, you thought you hated but can't stop dancing to, you can rest assured that you'll never say disco sucks again.

How To Wreck A Nice Beach: The Vocoder From World War II To Hip Hop The Machine Speaks
Cat: 411782 Rel: 05 Apr 12

334 pages, hardback, black & white/colour
Notes: The vocoder, invented by Bell Labs in 1928, once guarded phones from codebreakers during World War II; by the Vietnam War, it had been repurposed as a voice-altering tool for musicians and soon became the ubiquitous voice of popular music.

In How To Wreck A Nice Beach, from a mis-hearing of the vocoder-rendered phrase, the How To Recognize Speech, music journalist Dave Tompkins traces the history of electronic voices from Nazi research labs to Stalin's gulags, from the 1939 World's Fair to Hiroshima, from artificial larynges to Auto-Tune.

Dave Tompkins saw the vocoder brush up against FDR, JFK, Stanley Kubrick, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, Kraftwerk, the Cylons, Henry Kissinger, and Winston Churchill, who boomed, when vocoderized on the morning before V-E Day, We Must Go Off! And now vocoder technology is a cell phone standard, allowing a digital replica of your voice to sound human.

From T-Mobile to T-Pain, How To Wreck A Nice Beach is a riveting saga of technology and culture, illuminating the work of some of music's most provocative innovators.

Join The Future: Bleep Techno & The Birth Of British Bass Music (by Matt Anniss)
Cat: 750622 Rel: 27 Nov 19

The history of 'bleep & bass' - 324-page paperback book by Matt Anniss
Notes: The previously untold story of British dance music's first sub-bass revolution, tracing the origins, development, impact and influence of bleep techno, and the subsequent musical styles it inspired, on UK club culture.

Since the dawn of the 1990s, British dance music has been in thrall to the seductive power of weighty sub-bass. It is a key ingredient in a string of British-pioneered genres, including hardcore, jungle, drum & bass, dubstep, UK garage and grime.

In the Join The Future book, dance music journalist Matt Anniss (Resident Advisor, DJ Magazine, Red Bull Music Academy) traces the roots, origins, development and legacy of the sound that started it all: the first distinctively British form of electronic dance music, bleep techno.

A mixture of social, cultural, musical and oral history, Join The Future reveals the untold stories of bleep's Yorkshire pioneers and those that came in their wake, moving from electro all-dayers and dub soundsystem clashes of the mid-1980s to the birth of hardcore and jungle in London and the South East.

Along the way, you'll find first-hand accounts of key clubs and raves, biographies of forgotten and overlooked production pioneers, stories of bleep outposts in Canada and the United States, and the inside story of the early years of one of electronic music's most iconic labels, Warp Records.

Based on five years of research and hundreds of hours of new interviews, the book is a radical alternative history of the rise of British dance music during the late 80s and early 90s.

About the author:

Matt Anniss is a journalist and author specializing in electronic music, DJing and club culture. He began his career on internet magazines in the late 1990s before joining the staff of IDJ Magazine as Music Editor in 2000, later becoming Editor. Since leaving the magazine in 2008 he's become a regular contributor to Resident Advisor, Red Bull Music Academy Daily and DJ Magazine, specializing in historical aspects of dance music culture.

As an author, Matt Anniss has written over 50 non-fiction books for children and young adults, including a number of "how-to" books on DJing, podcasting and music production. In 2017 he co-authored The Vinyl Owners Manual (with Patrick Fuller) for iconic British brand Haynes Publishing, which became one of the brand's best-selling titles of 2018. He is an obsessive record collector and mix maker. He lives in Bristol, England.
