Notes: Sami Sänpäkkilä must be a busy chap, not content with just being the boss of the lovely Fonal Records label and making gorgeous instrumental-psych jams under the Es moniker, the man is also an accomplished filmmaker. Talk about your renaissance man, I'm sure he has the ladies falling at his feet, and this extensive DVD collection (in PAL and NTSC so no need to worry!) collects his best work to date. Starting in 1996 with a video for Finnish avant-metal behemoths Circle, the collection takes us all the way to the present day, and this year alone Sami has produced two videos for his own label. I must say I'm always skeptical of video work like this, all too often it falls into the category of someone holding a video camera out of a car window with ambient music playing in the background, but this collection simply blew me away, illustrating how well this sort of thing can be done when done right. For a start there's no mini-DV for our man Sami, oh no, every film here is either shot on 8mm or 16mm film and that's the beauty of it, there's something incredibly heart-warming about seeing the medium in action, the saturation, the noise, it all welds perfectly together with the imperfections in the music. Highlights on the disc include an absolutely gorgeous proper pop video for Islaja's "Rohkaisulaulu" which sees her being dragged through a forest while singing. This simple idea lends itself perfectly to the music and once you see the images you won't be able to listen to the song without thinking of it again, that's how you can tell when a video has done it's job right. Also notable is a particularly lovely piece of film called "91:11-12" which just features people jumping from side to side, it sounds a little basic I know but it is gorgeously shot and cut and the soundtrack comes from Mr. Sänpäkkilä himself, giving the piece a particularly haunting resonance. Showing that Fonal is far more than mere music alone, this is another essential part of their ever-growing catalogue and a great document of one of Finland's finest artists of the moment.

Notes: Asphodel's premiere DVD release features the Australian duo, turntablist Martin NG and guitarist Oren Ambarchi in collaboration with visual artists Tina Frank and Robin Fox for an AV expedition into the sublime and fascinating worlds of "Fateless". Since their teens the Australian electronic composers have produced with congruent obsessions in mind. After Ambarchi crashed one of NG's experimental basement jams with other local improvisers, they discovered their unique love for Buddhist harmonics and harmonic sound phenomenology. Their convergent interest in weird sounds lead to a long-lasting, musically productive friendship. In the summer of 2000 after Amarchi's own "What is Music" Festival, the two began formally producing together as respite from what they refer to as "a particularly long hot summer of antipodean improv noise fests." Commonly containing improvisational chaos with contemporary computer music's standards of pulses and glitches, the duo maintains balance of consonance and dissonance. Like the harmonic meditations, space is filled with bold resonance, expanding and contracting in tandem with Tina Frank's and Robin Fox's visual experiments. The combination of guitar and turntable remains mysteriously uncharacteristic of their sources, but this package of optical and sonic apparitions provides an eloquent passage into the realms of a separate reality.

Notes: The amazing recreational Area Bussloo in the Netherlands has forever been carved in the minds of all people supporting the harder musical styles since 1993. It was at this particular location where Mysteryland, at that time the only Dutch festival programming the harder styles, laid the foundation for what soon became an international phenomenon creating a vast group of followers. Many years later, the harder styles returned to these sacred grounds on the first of July 2006 presenting a brand new concept in a futuristic and sinister setting: Ground Zero - The Underground Night Gathering. Both organisations behind this mega event - UDC and Multigroove - already successfully collaborated during Impulz 2004 and soon after that, plans were made to develop "something huge" at Recreational Area Bussloo. Huge it became. Ground Zero - The Underground Night Gathering presented an open air festival of harder styles, unique in its kind as it was held during the night, consisting of eight areas of which two open air. Hardstyle, hard house, hard trance, old school/early bass, hardcore/darkcore, schranz and psy trance covered a big spectrum of harder styles presented by a fantastic line-up of 86 artists, which showed a nicely balanced combination of established and underground national and international performers. Some very unique back-to-back combinations were formed, accompanied by live-acts rarely to perform in The Netherlands. This live registration shows the highlights of this newest, freshest and hardest Dutch open air festival and its 15,000 visitors, which includes the performances of artists like Daniele Mondello, PCP live, Marc Acardipane, Robert Armani, Ruffneck Cherry Moon Trax, Tom Harding & many more. The extra's feature personal interviews with Lenny Dee, Manga Corps, Joe Inferno, Micha B and more artists, as well as a photo gallery with over 100 party pictures and the official Ground Zero commercial.

From the label's beginnings in the early 1960s up to its sale to Polygram in 1983 more than 600 records were put on the market by one of Europe's pioneering Jazz labels. Founder and producer Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer's (HGBS) exceptional recording technique and the sheer musical quality of MPS records made the vinyl discs sought-after rarities. In addition to the most important German artists such as Albert Mangelsdorff, Wolfgang Dauner, The Kuhn Brothers, Volker Kriegel and others, many of the international greats made their way to the Black Forest, too: Oscar Peterson, George Duke, Jean Luc Ponty, Duke Ellington, Monty Alexander, Baden Powell, Dizzy Gillespie - to name only a few. MPS received an excellent reputation for it's high-quality progressive recordings. The "Jazz Meets The World" series is considered as fundamental to World music. Mainly produced by legendary "Pope of jazz" Joachim-Ernst Behrendt who played a decisive part in moulding the image of MPS with his avant-garde-orientation and occasional flights into almost all areas of jazz.
