Berlin Digital : A Guide Through The Electronic Music Scene (German with English subtitles)
Notes: Berlin, with all its DJs, producers and labels, as well as clubs and bars, possesses one of the most interesting and largest scenes for electronic music worldwide. "Berlin Digital" arose from the vast interest and love for the issue, as well as the conviction that it is time for such a document. It presents an assorted group of activists, who, in our opinion, are representative for the electronic music-scene and who live up to their ideas and energies on that big playground of electronic music, be it experimental electronica, house, techno or drum & bass.

Duke Ellington - Love You Madly & A Concert Of Sacred Music At Grace Cathedral
Cat: 939279 Rel: 05 May 23

Love You Madly is an Emmy-nominated behind-the-scenes profile of Ellington including performances and interviews with the legendary bandleader.
Notes: Love You Madly is an Emmy-nominated behind-the-scenes profile of Ellington including performances and interviews with the legendary bandleader. The performance footage was recorded in a number of places, from The Basin St. West Jazz Club, the 1965 Monterey Jazz Festival, and his first Concert of Sacred Music at Grace Cathedral. This program was described by Ellington in his autobiography as "the best film about Duke Ellington ever made".

A Concert of Sacred Music At Grace Cathedral (also an Emmy-nominated program) is a rare piece of history. Filmed on location at the premier performance on September 16, 1965, it is the first of what would be 3 Concerts of Sacred Music composed by Ellington between 1965 and 1973. These pieces combined classical, jazz, spirituals, gospel, blues music and dance and were performed in churches and cathedrals around the world. This Concert of Sacred Music was commissioned by the Dean of Grace Cathedral as part of a yearlong celebration for the completion and consecration of the Cathedral.

Early Filmworks 1996 - 2006
Cat: 231228 Rel: 04 Aug 06
Notes: Sami Sänpäkkilä must be a busy chap, not content with just being the boss of the lovely Fonal Records label and making gorgeous instrumental-psych jams under the Es moniker, the man is also an accomplished filmmaker. Talk about your renaissance man, I'm sure he has the ladies falling at his feet, and this extensive DVD collection (in PAL and NTSC so no need to worry!) collects his best work to date. Starting in 1996 with a video for Finnish avant-metal behemoths Circle, the collection takes us all the way to the present day, and this year alone Sami has produced two videos for his own label. I must say I'm always skeptical of video work like this, all too often it falls into the category of someone holding a video camera out of a car window with ambient music playing in the background, but this collection simply blew me away, illustrating how well this sort of thing can be done when done right. For a start there's no mini-DV for our man Sami, oh no, every film here is either shot on 8mm or 16mm film and that's the beauty of it, there's something incredibly heart-warming about seeing the medium in action, the saturation, the noise, it all welds perfectly together with the imperfections in the music. Highlights on the disc include an absolutely gorgeous proper pop video for Islaja's "Rohkaisulaulu" which sees her being dragged through a forest while singing. This simple idea lends itself perfectly to the music and once you see the images you won't be able to listen to the song without thinking of it again, that's how you can tell when a video has done it's job right. Also notable is a particularly lovely piece of film called "91:11-12" which just features people jumping from side to side, it sounds a little basic I know but it is gorgeously shot and cut and the soundtrack comes from Mr. Sänpäkkilä himself, giving the piece a particularly haunting resonance. Showing that Fonal is far more than mere music alone, this is another essential part of their ever-growing catalogue and a great document of one of Finland's finest artists of the moment.

Great Women Singers Of The 20th Century
Cat: 910450 Rel: 01 Dec 22

This performance by Chaka Khan, recorded in 1993 at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City features a number of songs closely associated with jazz.
Notes: This performance by Chaka Khan, recorded in 1993 at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City features a number of songs closely associated with jazz.

Chaka Khan has been performing for almost 50 years. The multi-platinum, Grammy Award singer began her career in the early 1970s with the pre-eminent funk group Rufus. A beautiful and dynamic vocalist, Chaka was raised on Chicago's South Side. She began her career as a solo artist interestingly, singing jazz. Her fame however, came with contemporary solo funk hits like I Feel For You and the classic I'm Every Woman, which she successfully recorded 10 years before Whitney Houston's cover version.

This 1993 live performance at New York's intimate jazz club The Blue Note, finds Chaka in the musical environment that she has always felt most creative. In great voice and surrounded by five great jazzmen, she performs a rare catalogue of songs closely associated with jazz. Several of which cannot be found on other recordings.

She sings the Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn standard Take the "A" Train, Rodgers and Hart's My Funny Valentine plus Summertime and I Loves You, Porgy from Gershwin's folk opera Porgy and Bess.

This is a unique, rare and exciting live performance recorded at the peak of her vocal prowess. And the combination of her definitive vocal talent, seen live, offers a great concert performance.

If 60s Were 90s: The Visuals
Cat: 953617 Rel: 20 Jul 23

Accompanying visuals for If 60s Were 90s
Notes: Beautiful People "If 60's Were 90's" Box Set Consisting of over 50 sampled Guitar Riffs, Lead Vocals & Word Raps From Guitar God Jimi Hendrix. Commissioned by legendary record producer and former creative head of the Jimi Hendrix Estate Alan Douglas in 1990, the cleverly titled "If 60's Were 90's" by the band Beautiful People, is a truly unique and seminal record. "Beautiful People are a bunch of movers and shakers from London's Acid House Scene, who have a highly developed fascination with the music of Jimi Hendrix, emphatically not a 'Tribute' band in the style of the Bootleg Beatles or the Australian Doors, Beautiful People have used sampling technology to virtually recruit Hendrix into the groups line up." - David Sinclair, Billboard Magazine.

Consisting of over fifty guitar riffs, vocal cut outs, out- take lead breaks, and word raps from guitar god Jimi Hendrix, "If 60's Were 90's" also features spoken steals from Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell, 60's blues guitarist Mike Bloomfield and a party called the "Milky Way Express" that included the one and only Frank Zappa.

Like some Groovy Psychedelic time-machine cruising the Hendrixphere, Beautiful People pluck from over 30 different Hendrix recordings, writing nine new songs creating an... "Ambient Dance Dream Tribute" (Kris Needs, NME)... of ... "Super Psychedelic Baggy Indie dance with Orb like overtones.." (Ian McCan, VOX) creating a sound that arguably helped kick off the rock dance crossover phenomenon of the early 90's, bringing guitars back into dance music, while still retaining the psychedelic rock majesty of one of the greatest guitarists of the 20th Century.

In The Glow Madrid 1983

Live music performance from John Foxx in Madrid 1983 captured on DVD
Notes: Restricted to 1000 copies, this limited edition DVD documents a 5 song performance by John Foxx at RTVE's Madrid TV studio in late 1983 during The Golden Section Tour.

Once a good quality tape of the show was located, these tracks were originally intended to be for the recent Metadelic CD. However, in the end that proved to be impossible and John was able to license it directly through Metamatic Records. Clocking in at around 26 minutes, the performance features 5 brilliant versions of songs from The Garden and The Golden Section - definitely the best we've ever come across.

Karborn authored the DVD. The audio has been remastered by Dallas Simpson @ Dallas Masters.

Jazzin' The Black Forest
Cat: 233961 Rel: 02 Sep 06
Notes: The Label MPS (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) is known as the German "Blue Note". From the label's beginnings in the early 1960s up to its sale to Polygram in 1983 more than 600 records were put on the market by one of Europe's pioneering Jazz labels. Founder and producer Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer's (HGBS) exceptional recording technique and the sheer musical quality of MPS records made the vinyl discs sought-after rarities. In addition to the most important German artists such as Albert Mangelsdorff, Wolfgang Dauner, The Kuhn Brothers, Volker Kriegel and others, many of the international greats made their way to the Black Forest, too: Oscar Peterson, George Duke, Jean Luc Ponty, Duke Ellington, Monty Alexander, Baden Powell, Dizzy Gillespie - to name only a few. MPS received an excellent reputation for it's high-quality progressive recordings. The "Jazz Meets The World" series is considered as fundamental to World music. Mainly produced by legendary "Pope of jazz" Joachim-Ernst Behrendt who played a decisive part in moulding the image of MPS with his avant-garde-orientation and occasional flights into almost all areas of jazz. In the last 15 years DJs like Oliver Korthals (Mojo Club) and Rainer Truby made their younger audience aware of the MPS originals - a generation not even born when the records first came out. Elke Baur's documentary "MPS - Jazzin the Black Forest" is an affectionate portrait of the label and his founder HGBS who died tragically in a car crash two years ago. Interviews with musicians and former MPS staff plus rare live and archive documents give an inside account of an era and the "Most Perfect Sound".

Live In NYC
Cat: 225925 Rel: 27 Jun 06
Notes: As a rule, live Hip Hop releases aren’t all that. But rules? Hip Hop is not about rules. Ghostface isn’t about rules. He’s about breaking rules and that’s just what he does on "Live In New York City"... he’s smashing the rules, obliterating them, killing it just as he did verbally last October in New York. The sound quality is the highest as Tony Starks and his crew take you through material drawn from his solo efforts like "Ironman" and "Supreme Clientele". There’s even an early version of "Be Easy" from this year’s "Fishscale". Of course Ghostface couldn’t hit the stage in New York without a tribute to ODB. It’s here in the form of "Shimmy Shimmy Ya". And what would a Hip Hop show be without a stage full of great guests; Cappadonna, Masta Killa, GZA, Trife Da God, Killah Priest and more were all in attendance and on the mic that night last October.

SWANS: Where Does A Body End?
Cat: 790067 Rel: 18 Sep 20

An intimate portrait of the band SWANS.
Notes: Where Does a Body End? is an intimate portrait of the band SWANS, from their roots as a brutal, confrontational post-punk band that emerged from the same early 1980s era NYC that gave us Sonic Youth (and, somehow, Madonna) through their ill-fated bid at mainstream success in the 90s indie-rock gold rush, through breakups and chaos (on and offstage) to their odds-defying current status as one of the most accomplished and ambitious bands in the world, one whose concerts are more like ecstatic rituals than nostalgic trips back through their most popular songs.

SWANS has always been a collection of singular performers, but there's been one constant since its formation in 1982--singer, songwriter Michael Gira. With unfettered access to hundreds of hours of Gira/SWANS archives of never-seen-before recordings, videos, and photographs, the film brings us along the path they needed to carve for themselves.

The film is many things, a musical history, a time-capsule, a tour diary, a concert film, but mostly it's the story of a life in the arts, frequently difficult, spanning decades without a safety net, creating the work because Gira says What else am I going to do? As bandmate Thor Harris notes, Michael is not a fearless person, but he is a fearless artist.

The East Coast Shake Down Part 2
Notes: If you've seen part 1, part 2 is a must have DVD that you don't want to miss. In scenes 1 through 6, Chamillionaire walks you through Sues, a strip club well known in New York city for Tuesday Dominican night. Nothing but hustlers, thongs and money being thrown around. Comedian TK Turklin interviews Chamillionaire about how he went from ashy to classy. In scenes 7 through 9 Chamillionaire breaks down how he came up in the rap game with Paul Wall, and why fans are so dedicated to the dirty south. From passing out flyers, chasing down radio plays, selling CDs out the truck of their cars, to both of them becoming regional stars. Chamillionaire breaks it down and gives the key as to why southern rap music is so huge and continuously growing with unconditional support and loyalty. A Chamillionaire quote: "No matter what an artist may put out, the fans are going to buy it and support it just on the strength of our grinding process." In scenes 10 through 15, the DVD is packed with videos (including "ridin' dirty" featuring Papoose and Jae Millz), interviews, a new segment titled "What people talk about in the hood", and rumours on who's hot, who's a snitch and who's the greatest rapper alive.

Black Label Society concert footage from Paris & London
Notes: Zakk Wylde shines with his Black Label Society in this concert recorded in Paris by big sound, good editing and sharp image. The directior is extremely creative with tools such as zoom, split screen and optical alienations, including tracking shots from the ceiling of the location. The band itself additionally gives everything in its committed and agile performance. As a plus there are four songs from a gig in London. With almost four hours of total playing time, this Blu-ray is filled to the brim and should be an essential part of any BLS collection!
