Synth modules

Notes: Clever FM module that does digital-style through-zero FM using analogue circuits. Use any signals from other modules as your carrier and modulator, then phase modulate or wavefold in the FM Aid.

Supplier's Notes:
FM AID is a module designed to perform through-zero linear Frequency Modulation (FM) in the analog modular world. Any arbitrary signals can be used as a Carrier and Modulator. The module copies FM in how it is done in digital implementation, but in a completely analog circuit free of digital aliasing artifacts. Digital or software FM oscillators are mainly based on a ramp waveform which is then shaped to other waveforms. This is also represented in the FM AID module: sawtooth signal is expected on the Carrier input to give the indicated sine, triangle, sawtooth and square waveforms on the respective outputs. However the user is not limited to only use sawtooth for the Carrier and any other signal can be plugged giving many complex waveforms at the outputs.

All known FM tricks from digital implementation are also applied - you can endlessly experiment with the Carrier/Modulator frequency ratios, Modulation index (FM knob), Modulator's amplitude shaping (CV knob), feedback FM (output is fed back to the Modulator's input) and many other.
Carrier input has normalled connection to the Modulator's input. This internal routing is disconnected each time a plug is inserted in the Modulator's input. That is a handy option which allows the module to be used with only one signal source - this single signal will act as Carrier and Modulator at the same time. There won't be any frequency differences between Carrier and Modulator in this case, but many interesting wave folding sounds will be available anyway.

Technically speaking FM AID uses Phase Modulation, not Frequency Modulation. The sonic difference is that the produces sound is brighter.

Notes: HN VCF is a state variable filter having 12 db Low Pass, 12 dB High Pass, 6 dB Band Pass plus 18 db Low Pass marked as "LP!", because it has extra drive. All three parameters: "Freq", "Resonance" and "Drive" have dual knobs with outer knobs controlling bipolar CV amount. These affected CVs are then shown by the relative green/blue LEDs.

The possibility to have CV over "Resonance" and "Drives" makes it a very capable 6 HP filter.

"LP!" output has 6 dB steeper slope (18 dB) compared to ordinary 12 dB "LP" output. Plus it has much more drive.

Notes: LED Meter is a handy utility module designed to show audio levels. Three color versions are available:

- green colour with yellow-red peak segments.
- all blue colour
- all yellow colour

There are total 30 led segments, each one roughly corresponds to 1 dB of level, so it is 30 dB of measurement level available with this module.
The module has an input for the signal to be displayed, and its buffered copy is sent to the output for further processing, so no external splitter is needed.
Two trimmers are accessible via holes on the front panel: left trimmer adjusts brightness and right trimmer is used for the level adjustment. So the module can represent full scale signals ranging from 1 V to 12 V.
There is operation mode jumper on the back side. When the jumper is installed - bipolar operation is active, and when the jumper is removed - ordinary audio meter is active.

Notes: The Herzlich Man Machine Interface - a beloved instrument, but what if there was even more of it? An MMI with more than one dimension? An MMI arranged in a manner of... matrix?

With operation identical to it's little brother, the MMI Matrix allows the user to patch inputs to outputs by connecting zig-zagged patterns together with fingers, fruits, cables, pizza slices or any other conductive source. The labyrinth patterns will immediately connect the zig-zags immediately adjacent, whether above and below, or on each side. Furthermore, the two labyrinths within labyrinths will connect ALL adjacent inputs and outputs, which may lead to beautiful disasters or otherworldly insights.

As with its predecessor, the MMI Matrix is fully touch and pressure sensitive, reacting to the amount of pressure exerted, the amount of skin connecting, and the resistive quality of your body. Incredibly easy to perform with, the MMI Matrix offers new and far more advanced ways to patch your performances, whether CV, triggers or audio signals. Create reverb swells that vary between different types of reverb, use multiple fingers and labyrinth patterns to mix trigger signals into complex polyrhythms or create beautiful chords by combining various pitch inputs with a chord oscillator. The MMI Matrix also integrates very well with it's little brother, so there is absolutely no need to hold back!

Oh, and as always, it uses NO power! But it will take up 10hp of space in your system. A fair deal!

Notes: The MMI Maxima is the final word in MMI technology. Beautiful gold patterns form gradients of touch sensitive surface areas, each connected to an input/output. Drag, rub, pinch or tap your fingers across to form connections, and create evocative and unique performances. Utilize the various pattern densities and shapes in your performance, or create installations with whatever conductive material is to hand.

Operation is easy: simply plug any audio, LFO, CV, trigger, gate, offset or clock into any of the inputs on the front panel, and connect one or several outputs to destinations in your system. The symbols near the sockets correspond to the shapes on the panel, and all that remains is for you to form the connection between the desired symbols with your hand, or any other conductive object you may have. Connect multiple at the same time to achieve liquid, gradual mixing, evolving rhythmic patterns, mixed LFOs and more. Furthermore, touch the pressure plates more firmly or in more dense areas to form stronger connections - in practice, this means a signal will pass with more or less intensity, based on the pressure you apply.

There are countless possibilities here: the shapes make it easy to memorize your patch, and the many inputs and outputs allow for enormous creativity. Eight inputs and one output? No problem. Maybe you want eight outputs sharing one input? Also no problem. Why not patch in an offset voltage, and then use the pressure sensitivity to sweep a filter with the offset patched into the filter resonance CV control? Or maybe create volume swells by patching audio into a VCA, or even an effect, for reverb or delay swells. Maybe you want to create chords, crescendos or chaotic and swiftly changing drum patterns?

Although practice helps, there are no rules for playing the MMI Maxima. Use it upside down or downside up, rack it, tape it to your body or drill it into your guitar and use it with the expression input on your pedals (yes, this is actually possible. Seriously.) With no external power needed, it makes an excellent performance companion for any system, big or small, modular, semi-modular or even not-modular-at-all.

Intended as a controller for musicians and non-musicians alike, the purpose of the MMI Maxima is to put emphasis on your performance and expression, rather than your competence at the ivory keys or dexterity at a drum pad. Let your hands, slices of pickled cucumber or other conductive everyday objects do the talking, through a combination of clever patching and expressive play - with the MMI Maxima, you have a performance tool unlike any other at your disposal.

Notes: The Man-Machine Interface, or MMI, is a passive touch and pressure sensitive controller which allows the user to direct CV and audio signals at will. The MMI consists of three input/output jacks, and five body contact surfaces in glorious gold.

The zig-zag body contacts correspond to the input/output jacks, with the top zig-zag connecting to the top jack, the middle zig-zag connecting to the middle jack, and the lower zig-zag connecting to the lower jack. The spiral patterns in between the zig-zags are comprised of the two adjacent jacks, so the upper spiral is comprised of the upper and middle jack, while the lower spiral is comprised of the middle and lower jack.

In order to operate the MMI, the user can touch any two points with their fingers, patch cables, a piece of fruit or vegetable, or any other conductive substance or object, in order to complete the connection. The degree of contact made with the MMI, and the resistance of the object completing the circuit, will determine the output that is sent along the circuit. For instance, if a user were to patch a VCO into the top jack, and patch the MMI into a filter in the middle jack, the VCO will be sent to the filter when the topmost zig-zag and lower zig-zag are connected by two fingers, for instance.

But how about the spirals? The spirals offer a way to make a connection with one finger. Using the example from before, the connection will instantly complete when the user touches the upper spiral pattern. Using this principle, it becomes possible to use the MMI in unusual and interesting ways, such as a rudimentary keyboard, a drum controller, a switch and any other number of weird and exciting purposes.

It is also possible to combine several MMI - using two different MMI, it is possible to reach across one zig-zag to another zig-zag, in order to make a different connection, or to place a particularly long vegetable across all the contacts just to see what will happen. The MMI is an unusual patching system for the experimental musician, and lends itself well to all manner of experimentation and weird instruments.

The MMI can bleed a tiny bit of signal when using sharp VCO waves like square waves, while other sounds like sine waves will have softer responses. This can easily be corrected with amplification or attenuation as needed.

The MMI takes up 4HP and is skiff friendly, and is also suitable for installing in external boxes as a passive control unit. You can combine any number of MMI to create increasingly complex keyboard-like arrangements, drum pad matrixes or advanced switch systems.

Notes: The Om is a slim, passive 2hp LPG with characterful resonance. Taking notes from its bigger brother, the Omen, the Om offers similarly beautiful resonant LPG action in half the size and skiff-friendly depth.

In a convergence of old-school LPG design and more modern components, the Om boasts a single -6dB resonant filter, custom hand-built vactrol and no less than three cutoff modes designed to inspire your next sounds.

Although the little brother of the Omen, the Om brings a distinct sound to the table. Do not mistake the Om for an Omen sawn in half, as they will both provide musically interesting and useful sounds to your setup.

Exactly as with the Omen, care has been taken to create a circuit with near-zero audio bleed and the best possible characteristics for a passive LPG. Of course, many of the natural features of vactrols remain, such as subtle memory effect when engaging the vactrol for long periods.

Finally, you receive maximum blinkenlights as an LED on the front panel simulates the action of the vactrol, so you'll always know what's going on under the hood. No collection of fancy LPG's is complete without the Om(en)!

Notes: You've been plugging, patching and sweeping for hours, when it hits you: you're not actually listening to what you're making. Up until this point, the sad reality of modular has been that your ears won't hear the sweet sounds of your music, unless you invest in a bloated, oversized output module or a professional mixer. This ends now.

The Herzlich Micro Phone Out is an active headphone output in only 2hp - and it includes a very pleasantly tactile volume slider! Gone are the days where you would have to spend untold hp on useful and clean headphone outputs, now all that remains is beautiful, small simplicity.

No stereo signals to process? No problem. The left channel automatically works as a mono input with nothing plugged into the right channel. Forget everything else - this is the one and only output module you'll need!

It's another Herzlich Labs release: the 2hp stereo Attenuverter. Two channels of connected attenuversion, allowing you to fully and smoothly invert any signals you plug in - turn negative to positive, turn phase to antiphase, and find all the variations in between.

With the usual pleasantly tactile sliding pot, the sAttenuverter is both performance friendly and inspiring to use. Extremely suitable for linked mono signals and stereo alike, it will feel right at home in the increasingly popular stereo setups in modular.

Notes: You've been up all night in a bidding war on eBay to win a prized 80s rack effect unit - you can't wait to add some serious cheese to your tracks, and the sound of gated reverbs ring in your ears. Your heart pounds, and your pulse rises to crescendo as you win the auction! But there is one problem: your Eurorack system runs way too hot to simply plug straight into your stereo FX units. Your heart sinks, as you realize there is not much you can do that doesn't involve a lot of messing around with complicated and weird mono modules. That is, until now: introducing the Herzlich SFXI.

The Stereo FX Integrator was designed in response to my own need: owning several cool stereo FX units, and having no easy way to integrate them with an easy send and return, in my Eurorack system. Attenuate your Eurorack signals down to line level, or even all the way down to instrument level, and get a nice, clean boost back up to modular levels, with this dead simple and highly useful device from the R&D department at Herzlich Labs.

You can even use it to integrate external stereo line level signals into your Eurorack, which is both nice and convenient, and also useful. Finally, you have an easy way to get the sound of your JV1080 into your Clouds.

The scientists have been working overtime to produce this unit, and were fed extra rations of maize and millet gruel just to bring you this circuit. Notes: Need an offset voltage? Of course you do, you probably need one all the time, and you can never seem to find one. Well, here's two.

Yes, the Stereo Offset boasts not one but TWO linked offset voltages, and even better, they can be independently set as unipolar or bipolar with jumpers on the back of the module. To further aid your adventure in offsetting, bicolor LEDs will indicate the current state of both outputs.

Modulator

An extremely wide range oscillator, spanning from deep LFO frequencies all the way up to supersonic sound! Four base waveforms and diverse internal routing options form a versatile palette of modulations for the CARRIER to feed on.

- Activating hard SYNC on the Modulator locks its core to the Carrier's heartbeat. The effect can be dramatic. Try this while phase modulating!

- Octave RANGE switch lets you quickly flick up and down between octaves. All the way beyond audio-rate and LFO speed octaves. Perfect for experimenting with different PM sidebands and taming the wide frequency range of the Modulator.

Waveshaper

This isn't a classic waveshaper! Developed anew from the ground up, this waveshaper is focused on deep harmonic experimentation and audio obliteration. Each waveshaper parameter is capable of being "turned up to 11".

FOLD up to 5 octaves above the fundamental Carrier frequency. A ceiling forms at maximum, imparting additional harmonics.

FEEDBACK the waveshaped and phase-modulated audio through a signal path internal to the waveshaper.

AMPLITUDE modulation spans thru-zero, allowing for full-range ring modulation effects with bipolar CV or audio signals.

CLIP the final stage of amplitude with the switch to introduce a last stage of harmonics before the complex signal exits through the final OUT.

Switchable inverting attenuators on each CV input, for quickly inverting the behaviour of your modulation. The indicator illuminates red to tell you the attenuator has been inverted.

Two distinct waveshaping modes

A press of the shape switch toggles Mindphaser between RAMPOID (green) and TRIANGULAR (yellow) waveshaping modes.

These modes have a remarkable effect on the behaviour of wavefolding and overall character of the final complex OUT, in addition to TZ-PM Bus character.

RAMPOID mode folds more asymmetrically, with raucous, buzzing harmonic artefacts as you sweep and introduce TZ-PM

TRIANGULAR mode folds more symmetric, splitting the complex sine wave at its peak centre of the waveform. TZ-PM character is less raucous, and more smooth.

TZ-PM Bus

Thru-zero phase modulation in the ANALOGUE realm! Unlike its digital counterpart, analogue TZ-PM has its own character we've come to expect from analogue circuitry!

Notes: The Mutant Hot Glue is a versatile bus mixer for analogue effects chain design. The included analogue compressor offers series or parallel compression and a sidechain input, making it particularly well suited to drum processing. The voltage controlled distortion is based on ideas borrowed from the guitar pedals responsible for a lot of yesterday's acid style techno sounds, but improved over the guitar equivalents, and made specifically for synthesizer and drum processing. By default, the 4 channel mixer's output conveniently feeds into the compressor's input, giving access to easy New York style parallel compression by way of the compressor blend control. The dedicated output and mixer bypass switch for channel A allow you to use it as a sidechain source for the compressor. An effects send and return allow you to create complex effects routings within your modular system. With the number of excellent DSP and other effects modules on the market today, this makes it easy to combine modules to great effect, all within the eurorack modular domain.

Redesigned by Erica Synths in close collaboration with Hexinverter. Minor alterations were made in mechanical assembly and digital controls to address Erica synths manufacturing routines and chip shortages, but the analogue signal path is 100% identical to the original version.

Notes: The Looping ADSR is an extremely versatile envelope generator. It can act as a traditional ADSR envelope requiring a gate signal to activate or as a looping ADSR. Envelopes can be output with both linear and exponential curves. In Loop Mode it repeats the cycle of Attack, Decay, & Release. Once the Release phase is complete, it loops back to the Attack and begins the cycle again. The Looped envelope can be further manipulated with the Loop Scale knob. Notes: Incredibly powerful two-channel filter module capable of much more than just filtering. State-variable digital filters with built-in VCAs designed to overdrive beautifully. Sounds great.

BIONIC LESTER MARK III is a 2-channel 2-pole state-variable digital filter with an unusual amount of good sonic character. The filter mode is continuously variable under manual or CV control, smoothly fading from lowpass to bandpass to highpass to notch to allpass with a single motion. The resonance stops just short of self-oscillation. A digital VCA controls the amplitude and the distortion of the input signal pre-filter. The filters have independent inputs and outputs, and an additional Mix output with balance control. The filter design was initially inspired by the best of late-1990s "virtual analog" filters and has gone far beyond.

The audio input controls have dual behavior. When the control (or CV input) is turned from zero position to the center, it operates as a simple gain control for that input. When turned past the center position towards the maximum, the signal will begin to soft-clip, adding hard clipping as the maximum is approached. This smooth and subtle distortion adds violence to otherwise unremarkable input material, generating additional harmonic content for the filter to process. The digital VCA that controls the gain and distortion functions is aware of the input signal's zero crossing, eliminating "clicking" noises when the gain is modulated.

Each filter section has three CV inputs. The first is a high-speed input hardwired to the filter's cutoff frequency, appropriate for snappy envelopes and slow moving voltages alike. The other two inputs (one with attenuverter control) are freely assignable to any of the filter parameters (cutoff, resonance, mode, gain), storable in a preset. The Mark III preset system stores eight fully programmed panel setups, instantly recalling everything under the harshest demands of performance. The Morph mode allows smooth fading between all of these presets.

Activate Filter B's LINK control for patch-free routing of the filter's control or audio signal. You can achieve dual-peak resonance, cable-free series routing, cascaded 4-pole filtering (with two stages of distortion), and full stereo using only one set of filter controls. The input normalization, LINK settings, and parallel mix output further reduce cable clutter while rapidly patching an elaborate signal flow.

The controls are arranged for maximum tweakability and minimum cable interference, with metal-shaft potentiometers attached to the panel on the large knobs. The Mark III OLED display displays the cutoff frequency in Hertz, resonance amount, and filter type morph. The CV inputs process all input voltages between -10 to +10 volts. Panel size is 15HP.

Notes: Get Amped

Amps comprises two precision linear VCAs that have been carefully designed to offer a wealth of flexibility and additional functionality. The front panel controls and signal normals allow these two VCAs to also be configured to function as: line level boosters, crossfaders, ring modulators, mixers, and much more. They can also be chained together by way of an included cable to form larger, more complex systems.

Amps features cascaded CV inputs and cascaded mix outputs allowing it to be used in a number of versatile configurations. A boost switch enables you to amplify each VCA's input by either +6dB or +20dB i ideal for boosting low amplitude signals or pleasingly overdriving audio. The addition of a phase inversion switch for the second channel allows Amps to function as a ring modulator. The CV normalization, which can also be inverted and offset, also allows for VC-Crossfader functionality.

Using the Intellijel Config app, you can assign each of the eight jacks to generate just about any type of voltage that can be derived from a MIDI signal; pitch, gates, triggers, clocks, velocity ... you name it! You can chain up to four CVx modules to a single MIDI 1U to add a whopping 32 additional channels of midi control to your modular.

Each CVx module can also allow you to generate 2 or 4 voice polyphonic controls with selectable voice allocation modes. The connectivity, feature set, expandability, and compact size make the MIDI 1U + CVx system ideal for integrating your modular gear with the rest of your rig.

Intellijel's MIDI 1U system comprises several elements, which work together to provide flexible, programmable MIDI-to-CV conversion to your Eurorack modules: The system comprises two mandatory components, and one optional component:

MIDI 1U module - This 14HP 1U module receives MIDI from an attached, external MIDI input connector (7U case, Palette case, or MIDI IN Jacks 1U module), and extracts (by default) Pitch, Velocity, Mod, CC, Gate, Trig, Clock and Reset messages - sending the proportional voltages to individual 3.5mm jacks for patching.If desired, the CC and MOD jacks may be configured to respond to either Channel Aftertouch or High Resolution CC, and the Reset jacks can be configured as a Run jack, instead. Additionally, MIDI 1U features an alternate Dual Mode, which maintains the Clock & Reset functionality, but uses the other six jacks to transmit Pitch, Velocity and Gate messages derived from two separate MIDI channels.

MIDI input connector - the MIDI 1U module does not have its own MIDI input jack. This enables you to use the MIDI/USB inputs built-in to your Intellijel 7U Performance Case or Palette Case. If you don't own one of these cases, you can purchase the MIDI IN Jacks 1U module to connect an external MIDI device.

CVx 1U module - This optional 14HP 1U module connects to the MIDI 1U module and adds an additional eight 3.5mm CV outputs. These outputs are fully programmable using the Intellijel Config app, and greatly expand MIDI 1U's ability to control your entire Eurorack system.

Notes: Digiverb is a lo-fi reverb effect unit that uses an Accutronic digital reverb "tank" module. The sound is somewhere between a virtual spring reverb and a dense multi tap delay but the effect is quite musical and interesting.

Use the Digiverb as a simple and fun way to add some extra dimensions to your patches!

Notes: Full-featured triangle core VCO/LFO

The Dixie II+ is a larger variant of the classic Dixie II. Using the same great triangle core oscillator, it adds a number of features to make it even more versatile with only a modest increase in size. The Dixie II+ makes a great primary oscillator for a modular system, or a great companion the Rubicon.

Notes: The Voltage Controlled Amplifier or "VCA" is one of the most essential and useful building blocks in a synthesis patch. The DUAL VCA 1U packs two high quality, DC coupled, linear VCAs into a very compact 1U package.

The two VCAs can be used completely independently or in tandem via the handy signal normalling. The DC coupling means that the VCA can be used for the amplitude control of both control voltages (CV) and audio signals.

Some application/use examples:

- Dual, independent VCA for dynamic level control of two different audio or cv sources
- Stereo VCA (use the CV normalling where CV A normals to CV B) for processing stereo sources or CV pairs.
- CV/Audio summing (when Out A is not patched, it normals to sum with OUT B, CV A and B control the independent levels)
- Voltage/signal doubling (use input A only and the doubled voltage will appear at OUT B when a CV of +5V applied to CV A)

Notes: Duatt is a dual-channel active/buffered attenuverter and summing mixer. Each channel has a knob, which can function as a unipolar attenuator or a bipolar attenuverter, depending on the setting of its corresponding two-position polarity switch. It's a versatile and super handy utility module that will find its way into almost any patch you make!

Each input is normalled to a built-in +5V DC voltage source. With nothing plugged into the jacks, each knob controls a voltage range of 0 to +5 V or -5 to +5 V depending on the position of the channel polarity switch.

Channel A's output is normalled into the output of channel B for mixing duties, and channel A has a 2x voltage multiplier switch, allowing you to double the voltage sent into Channel A.

Notes: A multi-purpose module designed to combine noise and modulation sources, slew, sample-and-hold, envelope following and more. Extremely versatile way to add randomness and controlled movement to patches.

One of Flurry's more interesting aspects is its collection of digital noises, which provide a wealth of interesting noises, suitable for either audio or modulation purposes. Each noise type has its own pair of unique parameters to further dial in the desired characteristics, with the primary parameter under CV control.

Most people consider noise to be "undesirable," and product developers expend great effort to design circuits that minimize noise. So why make a module designed specifically to create noise?

Indeed, unwanted noise is undesirable. But not all noise is unwanted. Synthesizing the sound of wind or waves are a couple of the more obvious uses for a noise generator, but the possibilities go far beyond. The crack of a snare hit; the breathiness of a flute sound; an added sizzle to a resonant pad - all are within the sonic domain of noise.

But noise has many other benefits beyond simply being heard. Noise happens to make a wonderful modulator. When noise is used to modulate a filter's cutoff frequency, or an oscillator's pitch or pulse width, then all sorts of raspy, buzzy, gritty timbres are obtained.

Noise is also a key ingredient in sample & hold circuits - a technique most commonly used to generate stepped, random voltages. The circuit works by sampling an input signal's voltage each time you send it a clock pulse, and holding that voltage until the next clock pulse. So, naturally, Flurry also contains the requisite clocking tools! Two of the most common destinations for the S&H output are a filter's cutoff frequency (creating stepped, clocked timbral changes), and oscillator pitch (which produces random notes at clocked intervals).
Of course, you might not always want your voltages to change so abruptly at each clock pulse. Maybe you'd prefer they wobble about gradually and with more grace? To do that, you need a slew circuit, and once again Flurry has you covered - allowing you to select not just the slew time, but also whether the slew is applied to rising voltages, falling voltages, or both. A flick of the switch, and that Slew circuit becomes an envelope follower, enabling Flurry to generate envelopes from input signals (syncing to drum hits are a common use).

With all these features, plus the ability to create random pulses, clock to external pulses, and perform more esoteric track & hold duties, Flurry is a noise lover's toolbox.
