Review: Trip-hop meets modern digital ambience on Gi Gi's latest for INDEX:Records. Nothing but the music meets the ear here, plunging us into ricochety sonic hotwirings from the jump. Allusions to dancehall ('Maiolica'), dub ('Palm Slick') and illbient ('Lilted Song') ring true here, while a vocal feature on the track 'Sinews' - from fellow mic-caresser and expert moniker-coiner Hysterical Love Project - yields a sound that recalls something like the combined sonics of HTRK and 3XL. Review: Omena once again calls on the superb sounds of Golden Retriever for this adventurous new EP that very much takes you away from the here and now and deposits you somewhere warmer. 'Part Lake' opens up with the joys of a spring day - acoustic strings rippling out as sun beams down. 'Andro Dunos' slows to a crawl and has a more star-gazing feel while 'Digambara' is a gentle rhythm that casts you out to sea. Two variations of 'Modulations' allows you to get lost in some lush synth tapestries and 'Kizuna Encounter' then ends with another lovely sonic day dream that empties your mind.

Review: Group Du Jour was founded in Portland, Oregon in 1983 and have had a storied career spanning the decades since. They have always brought together live, ethnic, and electronic sounds with folk and modern pop, later getting ever more experimental. Early albums Forgotten Colors in 1986 and Wonderful Vision in 1988 are groundbreaking affairs, the latter of which gave rise to 'Motion Of Waves', which is something of a cult favourite for deep diggers. It is a rich instrumental groove that layers up synthesiser, flute, guitar and haunting vocals sitting over a brilliantly electric beat. The whole thing was a live one-take recording and is perfectly suited to both sunset and sunup moments of dancing pleasure.

Review: After four years away from the label, Tomasz Guiddo returns to Compost Disco with a cut that defies easy categorization. It features lead vocals from Louie Austin, a classic, 'Rat Pack' style crooner who first collaborated with Guiddo back in 2016. 'Pain My Heart' combines squelchy, slow-motion grooves (complete with lo-fi, Latin-tinged drum machine beats), undeniably Balearic musical flourishes (including Spanish guitar solos and dreamy chords), and Austin's classy, emotive lead vocals. Quite where it sits is open to debate, but it's an immaculately executed and memorable song. Soundway sorts Meridian Brothers provide a suitably humid remix, adding Austin's weary vocals to loose-limbed Latin beats, deep bass and suitably tropical guitar licks. It's a revelatory revision and one of the strongest remixes we've heard so far this year.

Review: Mother Tongue sure knows how to serve up some beautifully escapist and Balearic sounds and that's exactly what we have here with this seductive new 12" from Tiombe Lockhart feat. Georgia Anne Muldrow. This welcome return to the label from Lockhart comes as a teaser ahead of her new album Going Forth By Day. On this evidence, it's going to be a real doozy because 'An Osirian Dream' is utterly angelic. The vocals soar to the heavens next to celestial melodies over a gentle rhythm. Also included a beatless version and a couple of T's takes which get more jazzy.

Review: Balearic DJs Chris Coco and George Solar have been making tunes together fora couple of years after first meeting at Ibiza Sonica radio. They soon hit it off in person and in the studio, so now we get their first album, Island Vibrations. Solar is an accomplished percussionist so he and Chris made a list of rhythms around which to loosely build each track with some of those used including Nyabinghi, Guaguanco, One Drop and Algaroba. Most were record in Ibiza with added bass from Fly and lots of organic synth work embellishing each one into this lush collection of fresh downtempo and chill out sounds.

Review: Gabin (pronounced gae'baen) is the nu-jazz duo Filippo Clary and Max Bottini. The Italian pair debuted in 2002 with their self-titled album and followed it up with four more as well as nine singles. Remarkably, their music has appeared on over 200 different combinations, such is its appeal. The debut album now gets a latest reissue as the acid jazz, jazz dance, downtempo and house sounds are still as relevant now as they ever were. The singing in French and Spanish adds a real European feel to this with its smooth beats and Mediterranean beach party vibes. A true classic.

Review: Five years after its first release, Emotional Response is serving up this welcome reissue of Alexis Georgopoulos and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma's classic Fragments of A Season. They came together after five years of superb releases and reached new highs here even though they aren't necessarily household names. It saw them turn in some wonderfully expressive compositions played out across all manner of organic instrumentation. The richness of the production and the highly developed ideas embedded within this gorgeous LP should resonate for a long time to come, not least because the pieces are all so easy on the ears.

Review: Kareem Lotfy and Heith are back with their Ghost Lemurs project, and arguably their most conceptual and captivating record to date. Describing Wombs & Spirit Aliens as "a type of folk music devoid of a specific homeland, but resulting from the authors' heritages, simultaneously divided and united by the Mediterranean Sea", it feels like stepping out of our traditional timeline and into another dimension. Unarguably psychedelic - you can almost hear the shooting stars wisp by core arrangements as you desperately try and stargaze in the mind's eye - it's also unarguably earthly. Polyrhythms and melodic motifs seem to be taken straight from the ceremonial practices of long lost communities and tribes. Those who built their civilisations around a connection with the terrestrial and extraterrestrial, something most of us can only really hope to imagine in 2024.

Review: Stone's Throw has never really made any wrong moves in our opinion, and here the label puts its full force behind a deceptively powerful album. Taking us to places that are deeper than perhaps what the imprint is best known for, this is immersive, hypnotic, otherworldly stuff made from a variety of plugged in machines, analogue and otherwise, including a semi-modular synth. The result is a journey-style collection packed with atmosphere but one that's also painstakingly detailed and textured. Sound waves are rendered almost visible by the movements, drones, tracks and other pieces here, drum and effects machines producing the kind of noises that mesmerise and suck you in further as time passes. Tunes to get lost in, the only remaining question is whether anyone will ever want to return.

Review: The ambient fan's favourite businessman and wandering soul, Martin Glass, presents a weary, cathartic series of wistful Balearic sketches in the vein of FSOL, the caretaker and the work of more fresh faced contenders like SSIEGE. Composed during a stay at 'a celebrity health resort in the hills beyond Hollywood', Magic Mountain unfurls over 13 balmy, benzo'd tracks, each named to evoke a musing, observation, or group wellness activity which our protagonist takes part in, compulsive cognac sipping included.
Particularly enjoyable pursuits include Glass' 'Morning Walk with Marlene Dietrich', which plugs away at a steady beach-tempo plod, while cirrus wisps of synthesizer stretch heavy across the horizon, and the poignant 'Dean Martin's Blizzard Dreams'; presumably inspired by a conversation with the King of Cool himself about his oneiric weather patterns. The delicate, pointilist 'Cognac at the Esalen Lounge' is an aural analogy for Glass' barside ennui, sounding like oversized ice cubes colliding in a wobble glass and the retreat culminates in the rollicking 'Carnival of the Jetsetters'; a misty-eyed goodbye to the other sedated participants, who are doubtless late for their next long-haul. Review: South African producer and Atjazz label staple Jullian Gomes makes a move away from his regular home to drop this new album Bruno & The Birds on World Without End. It is an adventurous one that gets well beyond the dance floor and comes with plenty of meaningful melodic hooks and well-crafted songs. Guess help bring some fresh vocal charm to his pure beats and crystalline synths with 'How?' (feat Sabrina Chyld - edit) being a highlight. Review: Re:discovery continues to explore the obscure and often-overlooked end of the 1990s IDM and ambient movement. Their latest must-check reissue is a first ever vinyl pressing of the previously CD-only 1998 album Tw0 Zer0s by Grain, a Californian duo whose hybrid sound offered a comedown-friendly fusion of ambient, IDM, and the various aural themes found in a lot of electronic music made on the US West Coast during the period (think dub, breaks, acid and psychedelic). It remains a fine album, with our picks of a very strong bunch including the head-nodding haziness of 'Strangeness of the Kind', the hip-hop-goes-psychedelic-electronica flex of 'Birthson', the dubbed-out ambient jazz of 'The Suspenders of Acrobats' and the hallucinatory ambient weirdness of 'Forever'.

Review: English duo Groove Armada is a towering presence over British and world dance music. They have served up countless global hits as well as more underground sounds, and recently their vast back catalogue is back in the spotlight as Late Night Tales have reissued three of their most superb compilations. Off the back of that, now comes this greatest hits album which is billed as GA25: All The Hits & More to mark their quarter of a century in the game. Some of the tunes on it have had a touch-up edit to bring them bang up to date and many of these are still much loved from party starters like 'Superstylin' to more downtempo delights like 'At The River.'

Review: Groove Armada might well be best known for their big beats, and fair enough. Their mastery of a smart sample and a compelling groove paired with catchy vocal hooks made that chart topping superstars who went on to tour the world endlessly before then disappearing and remerging on more underground labels like Hypercolour. But you don't get that good at sampling with being deep digging record fiends. And that is exactly what made them such a perfect fit for the Late Night Tales series which is all about offering up alternative sounds to accompany post-club comedowns. These collections were gateways into new musical worlds for many dance fans and they still stand up today so it's great to have them back in print.

Review: Music For Dreams are providing a home for Danish artist Jacob Gurevitsch, whose gifts on the Spanish guitar have been seducing listeners the world over for three prior albums and countless live appearances. El Terreno is named after the tranquil area of Palma, Mallorca in which Gurevitsch wrote the album and undoubtedly there's a strong Balearic breeze blowing through the whole thing, whether it's Gurevitsch meandering his delicate fingerpicking through understated but powerful compositions or when he's accompanying a vocal turn from the likes of Annisette on 'Santa Teresa' or some Cuban jazz trumpet from Arturo Sandoval on 'For Your Love'.

Review: Danish artist Jacob Gurevitsch is a master of the Spanish guitar who has proven that over more than one album on the cult Music For Dreamers label out of Denmark. One of them was Yellow Spaceship which now gets a much deserved reissue on heavyweight vinyl having first landed back in January of 2022. It is a blissed out mix of Balearic and downtempo with the effervescing guitar lens front and centre wheel swooning strings and dusty, slow motion rhythms gently propel it along. Sunny, soulful and heartfelt, this is a real winter warmer.

Review: For this sublime release, legendary Italian label Best Record has raided the archives of 'private recordings' by multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Pino Presti. Sharade was apparently inspired by the work of painter Tania Cantone and features Presti alongside keyboardist Claudop Calzolari, his son Andrea, bassist Andrea Verardi and organist Guido Mazzella. The results are colourful, sonically vivid and musically rich, with the quintet variously blurring the boundaries between ambient, jazz-funk, Balearic, Mediterranean deep house, downtempo, library music, cinematic soundtracks and slow-motion leftfield pop. It's hard to accurately pigeonhole, but that's no bad thing - especially as the album's varied tracks are united by a classiness and a wholeheartedly enjoyable sun-baked mood.
