Review: With over 50 years of experience dating way back to the early 70s with the progressive outfit Zebra, Joan has left quite a discography that is still being discovered and enjoyed. This EP - Joan Bibloni's second appearance on the label in total - features three versions of 'Badia Onirica', two of them being language versions and then the instrumental. Overall, the song is a track fitting for the Cafe Del Mar sound - a mix of folk, electronica, house with a Latin and folk influence and versions in Spanish and Catalan. An EP for watching the sunsets, dreaming on the beach and remembering life's great time with friends and family. NuNorthernSoul continues to honor the chill out legacy.

Gold Suite - "The Cowboy" (6:21)

Residentes Balearicos - "Smoke & Fly" (8:33)
Review: Nunorthern Soul's fourth vinyl outing encourages you to sit back, relax, and sink into some truly horizontal sounds awash with Balearic bliss. James Bright kicks off the session with the warm glow of 'Amber' and its slowly percolating beats and painterly synths. Be.Lanuit's 'Nana A Leon' has a starry eyed charm that will get you gazing off into the night and elsewhere Norht Of The Island's 'I Feel' has a chugging groove and exotic synth work bringing plenty of colour. This is a high class EP of richly detailed downtempo brilliance.

Marijuana (6:34)
Review: A case of things turning full circle if ever there was one, as Rolo McGinty of The Woodentops fame - the indie stars who discovered raving and then featured on the very first Balearic Beats collection - teams up with Coyote for a one sided 12" for Is It Balearic. Well, if this isn't, then nothing is! The title should be a clue to its sentiments, paying homage to the laughing herb that is 'Marijuana' and in particular, partaking in its delights in the shade on a hot day. McGinty delivers a deep, resonant vocal and some very cool acoustic strumming, while the Coyote boys do the slow motion beat shuffling. Anthemic glory.

Review: Hell Yeah is a label that is right at the heart of the Balearic sound worldwide. It is studiously run by Italian Marco, who is also a deep-digging DJ himself, a part of the Balearic Gabba Soundsystem and also co-founder of much loved Berlin club night Buena Onda. The night's second compilation is coming soon but before that is this taster which gives you a great cross-section of the sounds to expect: leftfield disco, mature grooves, deep and slow acid workouts and plenty in between. Japanese master Calm really stands out here with his take on Gallo's 'Abysso.'

Love Has Found Its Way (4:38)
Love Has Found Its Way (dub vocal) (4:38)
Review: Dennis Brown's 'Love Has Found Its Way' is the subject of this super cover version on Vortex out of Japan. It is Maya Hatch and Robert Dubwise Brownie who are behind it and they bring lush lovers rock vibes and rolling reggae to their unique interpretation. Hayassen is the producer and the a-side version is awash with island chords that ring out over a clam sea and sundown. The fleshy bass and wiggling percussion ensure some nice dancing vibes next to the romantic vocals and the dub side on the flip closes out this crucial import in style.

Battle Hil (MAD dub mix) (6:19)
Review: Fresh from delivering the excellent El U Vee EP, Make a Dance welcome North-East titan Geoff Kirkwood AKA Man Power to M.A.D Records for the first time. This time round, Kirkwood has company: Kenyan singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rapasa Nyatrapasa. The pair set their stall out on opener 'Lou Land', where Nyatrapasa's Kenyan vocals and percussion slowly rise above a deep, drowsy and trippy deep house groove, before opting for an Amapiano-influenced Afro-tech-meets-Afro-House vibe on the more electronic 'Battle Hill'. Make a Dance deliver two takes on the latter on side B: a proto-house style vocal 'Remix' rich in vintage synth sounds, undulating acid bass, drum machine fills and echo-laden drum hits and a 'Dub Mix' that re-invents the track as a hazy, immersive slab of dub house/deep house fusion.

Review: Emotional Rescue turn their attention to Rare Silk and their sublime cult classic "Storm". It's one of those rare tracks with a wonderful otherworldly quality that manages to be smooth and accessible, and somehow not like anything you've ever heard before. It must be somewhere in the mix, between the dreamy harmonized vocals, lush instrumentation and curious sense of space. DJ Norizm - "Keep It Together" (Polepole remix) (6:11)
Review: Long time deep house master Recloose breaks cover for this new EP on Interspecies and as ever it operates in its own unique sound world. Opener 'Round & Round' is a high speed house cut with squelchy bass and balmy vocals full of love and soul next to a pitched up r&b hook. It's a real joy. 'Keep It Together' flips the script and is a downbeat house workout with live drum and perc and humid chords. A Space Talk remix of 'Round & Round' then gets more cosmic and far sighted over dusty drums and a Polepole remix of 'Keep It Together' then layers up the percussion into something warm, jazzy and humid.

Now it gets offered up with remixes from, firstly, Aikhi, who flip it with laidback downtempo drums and some classic and well known chords. The Fall (Maurice Fulton remix)
The Fall
Review: Maurice Fulton has delivered countless killer remixes over the last two and a half decades, including plenty that for one reason or another remain hard-to-find. This remix of LA r&b/indie-pop fusionists Rhye - first released 11 years ago - fits in that category. Fulton's version, showcased on side A, is a typically atmospheric, spaced-out affair rich in trademark crunchy disco drums, fluid and wayward electronic synth-bass reminiscent of his Syclops project, elastic bass guitar, effects aplenty and tactile female lead vocals. As the B-side original mix - a piano-laden downtempo pop number that swims in similar sonic waters to Sebastien Tellier's 'La Ritournelle' - shows, Fulton's mix is a genuinely radical re-build that exemplifies the very best of remix culture.

Review: Ethos is a brand new label from Athens that follows up its notable debut with another classy deep house offering from Jose Rico, who has long been synonymous with such things. 'Dubplates' opens up with slow, patient, warming dub house that is lo-fi and coated in misty pads. 'New Life Galactica' is another richly atmospheric deep house sound with muted acid lines and humid chords while 'Fade Out' gets a little more driving with a jumble of woody hits and golden soft focus chords. 'Future World Dreamoon' shuts down with fine broken beats and jazzy synth work for cultured and cosy backrooms.

Value Of A Piece Taken (5:54)
Review:
Producer and stay-at-home-DJ Lauren Ritter unveils her own brand new label with this hard to define new releases that draws on techno, downtempo, indie and more. The opener 'Vespers' is an icy minimal groove with snaking hi hats and off-grid kick patterns. It's danceable but also mindful. She then links with Tenesha The Wordsmith for 'Thirst Trap', a pastoral ambient beauty with spoken words and more direct rhymes from JB!! aka dirty Moses. "Quartz' then cuts loose on a deep and dreamy house tip and 'Value Of A Piece Taken' rounds out an adventurous EP in skittish, flute laced broken beat style.

Review: An ultra-depthy broken house production from fellows Roberta and Fawziyya Heart, 'Take Our Time' is a seeming exercise in how many top frequencies one can lop off, yet still use in service a sense of excitement in stasis. The simple tessellation of soul-fed voice, subdued kick, murmurative Rhodes and mono sub make for a fantastic combo, as we're unconsciously fed lyrics and style signifying tarrying and patience, not to mention the Molokos and Smith & Mighties of the 1990s.

Review: The latest Robohands saw a return to UK instrumentalist Andy Baxter's beloved formula of breakbeat, jazz and ambient from his breakout success with 'Green', which relied on much more jazzy leanings. Expect a wholly unique experience with Giallo however, which harnesses a much stranger energy within its ambient fortress. The sounds are tactile, yet somewhat distant at times, like being lost in dense blue fog on 'For the Different' or the soothing nu-jazz instrumental of 'Relax'. The undisputable highlight is the title track 'Giallo', a droning ambient synth with drum breaks and different synth patches gently swaying in and out of the mix as quickly as they arrived. It's a short and sweet care package from one of the greatest instrumentalists in the country.

Robot84 Vs The RAFF - "Get It Right Next Time" (5:46)
Review: London producer Scott Ferguson is the man behind the Robot84 alias. He has a love for 80s gear that very much defines the sounds he makes, from proto-house to darker disco. His self-titled label is back with more of that good stuff here as he faces off with The Raff for 'Get It Right Next Time'. This one has a creeping groove and warm chord sequences that tease and please beneath sweeping Balearic synths and celebratory melodic sequences that build to a crescendo. The drums get the hips swinging and the sprinkling of cosmic magic finishes it off in style making it a perfect cut for open-air dancing by the beach.

Jimmy Rouge is the man at the controls this time and he wastes no time in heading off to the stars with the cosmic disco workout that is 'Bay Leaf' and its stiff retro arps. 'Rounders' sinks into a more laid-back vibe, with late night chords and gently tumbling drum breaks perfect for seaside dancing. Review:  It's always a fun game to see when you first hear someone drop Roy Ayers's ubiquitous warm weather classic 'Everybody Love's The Sunshine.' This year has been rather cold in early spring but soon as this one gets dropped you cannot help but feel rays o your face even if they haven't yet appeared. It's a stone cold gem with its lazy drum tumbles and arching synths. The keys even sound like they can't be bothered to really move properly boucle of the heat and the lush vocal is the umbrella in the cocktail, if you will.

Review: The Paper Cuts label has been doing a fine job in putting out head-tripping club and chill-out styles for a fair stretch now and following the Ivy mixtape released earlier this year they're back with this outstanding split release from Roza Terenzi and Furious Frank. Terenzi takes the A-side with her trademark line in electro-minded machine funk rhythms powering gorgeous back room moods, keeping the mix dubby and with plenty of ambient sparkle on top of the punchy drums. There's even space for a little d&b trippiness on 'Total Recall', which also features Noff. Furious Frank gets busy on the flip with 'Splash', a blissed out beatdowns with more than a little Balearic magic in its bones, while 'Moss Rock' turns the heat up for a distinctly 90s slice of acid trance. 'Dripp' seals the deal with another low slung roller from the chill-out room of your dreams.

This is where Lee's disco funk fantasies run amok, with 'Dyane' in particular coming on strong with the sound of the early 80s. This is blissfully melodic, good time stuff throughout, steeped in classic motifs but delivered with a fresh, modern panache. There are downtempo Balearic moments like 'Crystal Dragonfly' to get lost it as much as there are plenty of invigorated calls to the dancefloor, making this a five track EP to really get your teeth into.

We're never short of new Ricardo Villalobos material and he's generous with his time as a mixer, but this project offers something different from the Chilean mad scientist of minimal. A Mountain Of One are a duo who deal in Balearic-leaning pop with a subtle charm and an adventurous spirit, and they initially approached Villalobos for a single remix of one of their tracks. As a fan of their sound, Villalobos ran with the project and it wound up as a full remix album of seven different versions. On the earlier tracks Ricardo takes a surprisingly light touch, while the later stages find us knee deep in the mesmerising roll of his minimal house, shot through with dubbed out ingredients from the original songs. It's surprising and satisfying in equal measure, showing Villalobos at his best and quite the scoop for A Mountain Of One.

Born from her meeting with Leonard Lasry, Charlotte Rampling inhabits each of the songs with her immediately recognizable vocal imprint with truly unique results. Lush melodies and a production benefiting from luxurious arrangements bring the record to life while the songs are sometimes spoken, sung and played like scenes from the cinema. The lyrics are rare poetry and evoke intimate feelings as they alternate between tenderness, melancholy and sometimes even a few amused and piquant notes.

Review: Under the now familiar Razmi alias, Phoebe Guillemot has spent the last decade carving a hard-to-pigeonhole musical niche that's all her own. While her music is always humid, heady, hallucinatory and intoxicating, it regularly draws on a dizzying array of styles. That consistent eclecticism is once again a major feature on Feu Fellets, her latest album-length excursion. Over the course of eight tracks, the Montreal native flits between Pat Metheny-meets-Steve Reich style Balearic brilliance ('Electric Counterpoint' inspired opener 'Risin'), dubbed-out mid-tempo chuggers ('Tien-Bon'), tropical breaks ('Zon Bien'), out-there bass music mutations (DJ Python hook-up 'Coucou Mon Ami', the two-step-fuelled psychedelia of 'Feu Foillets'), sparkling peak-time joyfulness ('Zombini'), and much more besides. In a word: essential!

This musical project found him landing on Mute with a great series of albums including the likes of Liquid and Unsound Methods as well as his sixth LP, subHuman. This one dates back to 2006 and came after a 6-year break from recording. It is dark and broody electronic music "which sets the listener a challenge to analyse what makes us human and subHuman." It's a collaboration with bluesman Joe Richardson who served up guitars as well as harmonica and eerie vocals. Themes in the record include murder, death, and religion while guest singer Carla Trevaskis did a fine job of serving up ethereal sound on 'Allelujah'.

Its moods - desire, fury, and violence - are paired with self-reflection that encourages you to go deep inside yourself while listening. There are haunting and ghoulish moments of intensity like 'Strange Hours' next to more soothing trip-hop cuts like 'Breath Control'.

Review: International Anthem presents a new album from Resavoir, a project from Chicago-based producer and composer Will Miller. This second outing for the group takes in a wide range of collaborators including Elton Aura, Whitney, Akenya, Lane Beckstrom, Macie Stewart and many more besides. Gliding between head-nodding bedroom beats and luxurious soul jazz, Miller demonstrates the clarity of his creative vision which is as rooted in relaxed musical interaction as it is accomplished instrumentation. Each track serves as a miniature world within itself, full of surprises and hidden depths, whether it's a dreamy vocal joint or a purely instrumental flight of fancy.

Review: Will Miller returns with the second album from his ensemble project, Resavoir. Mixing a love for beat scene production with a background in jazz conservatory training, Miller draws in a huge cast of collaborators to shape out an album draped in dreamy soul-jazz, which veers from sweetly sentimental vocal pieces to instrumental escapism. Alongside Miller's keys and trumpet, there's Lane Beckstrom on bass, Marie Stewart on violin, Akenya Seymour on vocals amongst so very many other talented cats. Brought to you by the always reliable folk at International Anthem, this limited 'dusk cloud' edition of the album captures the smouldering mood of the record perfectly.

Collecting tracks from seven releases spanning from 2014 to 2021, Rubicon serves as the project's Greatest Hits (for now). Review: Eternally prolific Wighnomy Brother Robag Wruhme is back with another album of his otherworldly, achingly delicate minimal tech house from way out in East Germany. Wruhme's music has always stood to the side of the standardised scene, and so it goes on this new one for Tulpa Ovi which passes through a variety of shades of 4/4 without ever sounding like anything else. Sometimes the composition his fragile and beautiful, elsewhere there's a looming creepiness pitched squarely at the night. Wruhme remains gifted in the art of embedding his music with the richest of feelings and they come through in abundance across these eight new pieces.

Review: New Robohands LP Palms is the fifth album from the London based instrumentalist and producer Andy Baxter. Moving towards different genres and arrangements from his previous albums, 'Palms' features duelling harp parts, tape echo, double bass and draws inspiration from artists such as Dorothy Ashby, Azimuth, Alice Coltrane and Toquinho. In parts tropical and synth-drenched, and in others stripped-back and acoustic, Palms is a journey back in time to the saturated analog recordings of the late 60s and 70s, with a subtle modern layer of glitch FX and pitch-controlled experimentation in places. The album makes also reference to classic releases from jazz fusion that feature the legendary Arp Odyssey synthesiser, used by artists such as Herbie Hancock and George Duke.

Review: Robohands is the London-based instrumentalist and producer Andy Baxter and Palms is his fifth studio album. It explores new moods and grooves and builds on his previous albums with lush harp, tape echo, double bass and inspiration from the likes of Dorothy Ashby and Azimuth. This is a standard black vinyl version though it also comes on translucent yellow wax which echoes the tropical and synth-drenched sounds as this journey heads back in time to the saturated analog recordings of the late 60s and 70s. Gear-heads will no doubt recognise its use of an Arp Odyssey synthesiser, which was also famously used by artists such as Herbie Hancock. A brilliantly timeless album.

Review: John Rocca cuts loose and taps into the more laidback side of his self on Reflections of the Sun, a collection of all-new material. If you didn't know, he is the Freeze band founder who wrote, produced, funded and released the jazz-funk classic that is 'Southern Freeez'. There is a much more reflective mood to this record with global influences drawn from a life in music and lyrics that touch on many of the dilemmas we face every day. His roots growing up in the 70s era when soul, jazz and funk were all at their best shine through, but so too his love of early 80s and 90s electronica.

Review: Internationally renowned techno tian Marc Romboy links with Marlene Sichuan and Dimitri Andrew for this exploratory new album which goes way beyond the confines of the dancefloor. It pairs his majestic synth work with gorgeous strings, angelic vocals and neo-classical piano playing. The sophisticated sounds that result are pure and escapist, uplifting and beautiful. Rhythms that do appear are subtle, supple, and sit in the background while centre sated is given to the emotive piano keys and slowly shifting deep space ambient pads. It's an excellent work of grown up downtempo bliss.

Review: Ronnie Lion is one half of Ambient Warrior and this is his debut solo outing. It finds him paying homage to Spanish Town, which is the capital of St Catherine in Jamaica and that is apparent from the off with its lush Spanish guitar notes fluttering over the face of the dubbed-out low ends and shiny digital chords. Lead guitarist Sean Wilkinson pays plenty of the guitar and the rhythm section has Ronnie himself on bass while Horseman is on drums to bring a heavy foundation. Up to the intricate and memorable hooks add the colour and charm and elements of Bossa Nova and Flamenco guitar also help add extra layers to this fine debut.

Drawing on collaborators such as Alison Goldfrapp, Susanne Sundfor and Jamie Irrepressible, we get another 10 slices of glittering, melodious synth pop magic from one of the finest duos to do it.

Royksopp unveil Profound Mysteries, an expanded creative universe and a prodigious conceptual project, on numbered gatefold vinyl for the first time. Profound Mysteries is as mystifying as the title suggests, much like Danny L Harle's 'Harlecore' the house cuts and hardcore dance tracks of 'This Time, This Place...' and 'Breathe' are broken up with echoing ambience sprinkled with the heavenly vocals of Susanne Sundfor on 'The Mourning Sun' or the sinister 'Press R', reminiscent of Anamanaguchi's 'USA' with its text-to-speech warning messages.

Review: Given the wide-eyed, largely downtempo nature of their music, it's perhaps a little surprising that it took Late Night Tales this long to ask Royksopp to mix a volume in the long-running after-hours series. Royksopp are, of course, old hands at this kind of thing - they delivered an impressive Back To Mine comp back in 2007 - and use the opportunity to mix-up a typically heady selection of stoner soft rock (Little River Band, FR David), sparse dub-rock (Tuxedomoon), cinematic soundscapes (Johann Johannsen), psychedelia (Prelude), well-worn favourites (Acker Bilk) and folksy Balearica (John Martyn). Fans will be pleased to see a sprinkling of unreleased Royksopp fare, including intensely beautiful opener "Daddy's Groove".
