Wicked & Bad EP
Wicked & Bad EP (orange marbled vinyl 12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: CRIT 153. Rel: 25 Sep 20
  1. Wicked (feat Riko Dan) (4:14)
  2. Wits End (2:44)
  3. Bad (feat Snowy) (3:45)
  4. No Dice (2:33)
Review: Linking up for the first time since 'Thoroughbred', kindred spirits Sam Binga and Hyroglifics collide to create their biggest collaborative body of work to date; 'Wicked & Bad'. Not just a kooky title, it truly is loaded to the lips with naughty... The opening system shaker 'Wicked' with long-time compadre Redders, the ice cold electro thrills of 'Wits End', the Riko Dan-front bubbler 'Bad' and the trippy instrumental grime finale 'No Dice' are all primed with the wickedness, and indeed badness, one needs to survive in these nonviable times. Critical in more ways than one.

Liondub & Marcus Visionary Present: Jungle To The World 3
  1. DJ Hybrid - "Special Request" (5:15)
  2. Horace Andy & Marcus Visionary - "Sound Killer" (Jungle VIP) (6:25)
  3. Visionary - "Hustlin" (feat Camp Souljah) (6:26)
  4. Truespirit - "Deep In The Jungle" (4:06)
Review: Reissue time! As New York jungle pillars Liondub International celebrate 10 years they've put together some of the hardest hitting bangers of their previous "Jungle To The World" collections on this powerful piece of wax. All the right vibes in all the right places, these all sound future fresh: DJ Hybrid's swashbuckling Dread bass backflips on "Special Request", the absolute bashy bless from Horace Andy and Marcus Visionary on "Sound Killer", the warmer reggae soul bubbles of Visionary's "Hustlin" and Truespirit's purring late 90s two-step homage "Deep In The Jungle". No filler in sight whatsoever.

Year Zero (12")
Cat: SUBB 010. Rel: 17 Mar 20
  1. Fanu - "Aura Eleven" (5:40)
  2. HMR - "Prophecy" (version) (5:55)
  3. DDOG - "A New Sound" (4:56)
  4. Infader - "Marble Madness" (6:07)
Review: Finland Freshness! Straight Up Breakbeat celebrate the heaviest of homeland hurters with this collection taken from their full compilation. All national badmen, all remarkably forward thinking in their dynamics and uncompromised weight, label boss and Finnish jungle OG Fanu takes the lead with a smoky, slower jazzy cut "Aura Eleven", newcomer HMR keeps the spacious mood going with "Prophecy" where more tidal wave breaks are soften by smoky horns and sci-fi soul. Flip for the ruffage as the mysterious DDOG gets wild on the clattering breakbeats and Infader closes with the most militant track of the record "Marble Madness". What a celebration of homegrown talent. Let's hope this becomes a series.

Eternal EP (12")
Cat: META 78. Rel: 25 Oct 19
  1. Eternal (8:13)
  2. Ultradogs (6:49)
  3. Hidden Memory (7:53)
  4. Hyperion (6:24)
Review: 2019 sees Metalheadz turn 25 years old, but Goldie's iconic label continues to turn out razor sharp EPs from talents old and new. HLZ is the latest to take things forward with this expertly executed four tracker. Featuring an array of raw, uncompromising tunes it spans a wide range of moods: "Eternal" is a brain frying stepper, "Ultradogs" is more a deeper, headier, atmospheric and cerebral track while "Hidden Memory" mixes up devastating bass with icy hi hats and snaking synths. "Hyperion" closes out with soulful vocals drifting above clattering drum work and will take you into the next dimension.

Amethyst EP
Cat: METHPLA 32. Rel: 18 Sep 20
  1. Amethyst (6:47)
  2. In A Lifetime (7:00)
  3. Break The Rules (6:24)
  4. Polar Dream (6:29)
Review: Defying the curse of 2020 with banger after banger after banger, Metalheadz are firing on more cylinders than they have in years. Hot on the heels of Phaction's crucial investigations comes this walloping attack of the senses from Emilio HLZ. Taking off where his 'Eternal' EP left us last year, it's a glacial affair steeped in emotion, tension and just the right amount of melancholy. 'Amethyst' sets the pace with its technoid, hip-wriggling charm. It's followed by a series of body blows, each one harder than the last; 'Once In A Lifetime' is a cosmic, introspective voyage that conjures up thoughts of Krust, 'Break The Rules' is a pummelling piece of breakbeat drama that morphs and mutates thanks to its heavy use of percussion while 'Polar Dream' closes on a Seba-level space trip. Dark but funky in equal measures; HLZ has the alchemy just right.

Terminate (12")
Cat: MEDITATOR 018. Rel: 05 May 20
  1. Terminate (6:17)
  2. E-Motion (6:36)
Review: Hyped On Acid, hooked on authenticity; long-time Irish artist John Reilly's latest alias sees him using an old school rig (complete with the all essential Akai and Atari ST) to making tunes the way they used to make them. The results are of course as heavy, gritty and futuristic as you'd expect. Both nodding towards to the Goodlookin sound of around 94, "Terminate" plays with the shades as a soulful vocal cry and west coast synth lines weave around savage amens and toxic bass while "E-Motion" is much more of a dreamy vibe. Think Omni Trio and you're raving on the right boulevard. Hype.

  1. Hold It Together (6:20)
  2. Shake It (5:44)
  3. Let's Rave Together (6:41)
  4. Feel So Real (5:51)
Review: Sometimes all you need are "Two Twelve Tens". Obviously a mixer would be necessary to complete the party set but we're going to assume Hyperkinetic has already got one of them. They've already got the tunes, clearly... Four gigantic slabs of classic old school energy laced with classic samples galore, this one is a bulging bag of pure rave energy that would appeal to ravers aged both 50 and 15. Highlights include the RAF pitched up vocal and epic pianos of "We've Got To Rave Together" and the sweet positivity of "Hold It Together". Come together.

  14. The Warning
Review: On his first album since parting company with Hospital Records, Lincoln Barrett has decided to do things differently. Inspired by a mixture of co-producing Underworld's last album and nostalgia for the music of his youth, Night Gallery sees him expand his musical repertoire in impressive style. So, while his famed melody-rich, festival-friendly drum and bass workouts are still present, they're accompanied by tracks that variously touch on Daft Punk style disco ("The Beat Don't Feel The Same"), punk-rock ("Shotgun Mouthwash"), string-laden progressive house ("Ambient Recovery"), Balearic-minded breakbeat-pop ("Save Somebody") and euphoric indie-rock ("Come Together"). It's a bold move, but one that should be applauded; after all, the album hangs together just as well as any of his previous sets.
