Intrigue 15: The Anniversary Collection
  1. Break - "Mind's Eye" (4:55)
  2. Superior Selectionz & Ben Soundscape - "Justa" (5:37)
  3. Roygreen & Protone & Ben Soundscape - "Ruffneck" (5:39)
  4. Luch & Joakuim - "Lifespan" (5:41)
Review: Since 2003, the Intrigue crew has been providing Bristol clubbers with regular doses of liquid funk and musically expansive drum and bass, first at their regular parties and, since 2008, on their offshoot label. Predictably, there's much to enjoy on this celebratory 12". Old pal Break steps up first with a veritable warm summer breeze of a roller, "Mind's Eye" - all punchy, snare-heavy beats, acoustic guitars, rumbling bass and dreamy freestyle vocals - before Superior Selectionz and Ben Soundscape join forces for the slightly more weighty but no less attractive "Justa". Over on side B, Soundscape returns to action alongside Ryogreen and Protone on the wobble bass-propelled stepper "Ruffneck", while Lurch - a lesser-known stalwart of the Bristol scene - delivers some delicious, Afro-tinged liquid funk alongside Joakuim. Rock solid.

Footwork Skank
Cat: JC 116. Rel: 10 Dec 20
  1. Footwork Skank (feat Yemi Bolatiwa) (5:16)
  2. Brian Brainstorm & Ricky Tuff - "Gunshot" (4:10)
Review: Jungle Cakes squeeze out one more sonic treat before the end of the year, making it their third in quick succession in 2020. This time Brain Brainstorm has linked up with Yemi Bolatiwa and Ricky Tuff for a full on combination of big time vibers. The label's DNA shines through big time in these tunes with 'Footwork Skank' being a big, summer sounding roller with Yemi Bolatiwa adding some finishing touches. It's a similar story on the nimble, clean and crisp 'Gunshot' featuring Ricky Tuff. These are too high useful weapons that will detonate any set.

One Moon One Star
Cat: CC 03. Rel: 03 Mar 20
  1. One Moon, One Star (5:19)
  2. In The City (6:07)
  3. In The Zone (5:29)
  4. Channeling (4:54)
Review: Building on an epic bedrock of downloads over recent years, DJ Jedi's Cantina Cuts continues to develop its vinyl presence with another slab of unfettered rave wax. This time we head to Poland as Radicall takes us from zero to white gloves in less than 20 seconds. "One Moon, One Star" reminds us how effective pitched up vocal samples can be when treated right. Pure fun, no ulterior motive, this sets the bonkers theme that runs throughout. "In The City" gets busy with the pianos and rolling four-to-the-floor breaks, "In The Zone" goes much darker with its down pitch stabs and sudden bass plunges while "Channelling" brings us to a dark 92 flavoured finale. Whistle crew?

Cetacean
Cetacean (12")
Cat: SFR 011. Rel: 20 Apr 20
  1. Cetacean (6:50)
  2. Plateau (6:20)
Review: Prime 93 flavoured sonic real estate here as Silent Force serve up another two track slab of black gold from the mysterious man like Redshift. Like his previous outings with DJ Problem Child, it's a game of two halves; "Cetacean" has all the weight and formidability of its whale moniker while its wild choppy breaks reflect the roughest of oceans. "Plateau" plays the consummate tonic with its fine line between soothing atmospheres and eerie sense of tension. High grade stuff as always from Silent Force.

Krunch's Mission
Krunch's Mission (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SLAPTHEWALL 001. Rel: 02 Sep 20
  1. Krunch's Mission (6:39)
  2. N64 (5:57)
Review: OG Riffz returns on a brand new label from J Robinson's Who Dem Sound camp: Slap The Walls. Just as the label name - and Riffz' legacy - suggest, the sound will have you joyfully slapping the nearest hard surface within seconds. 'Krunch's Mission' is all about the rolling jazzy breakbeats, tense chords and dubwise instrumentation while 'N64' pokes us in the (golden) eye with another careful balance of shades and emotions. Watch out for the full-on drum solo towards the finale of the track... Pure breakbeat science.

Doubtful Being
Doubtful Being (limited 12")
Cat: WDZ 001. Rel: 15 Sep 20
  1. Riffz - "Doubtful Being" (5:31)
  2. Riffz - "No Visiblity" (5:22)
  3. Green Wald - "Hot Pushin" (4:26)
  4. Green Wald - "Gangsta" (5:48)
Review: Riffz and Green Wald take two tracks each per side on what proves to be a varied but accomplished showcase of styles. 'Doubtful Being' revels in deep, clunking sub-bass pressure, crazy effects and timestretching, nodding perhaps to the scrambled breakbeat glory of Goldie and 4Hero's early 90s collaboration Rufige Kru. Jungle techno - that often forgotten missing link between rave and jungle - informs the four-to-the-floor but breaks-splattered 'No Visibility', the second offering from Riffz, an unusual vein to mine but all the more refreshing for it. Green Wald also harks back to the moments before the big bang that was jungle, opting for a slightly slower than normal tempo but plenty of beat manipulation and mixing desk skullduggery on 'Hot Pushin', before closing proceedings with the heavy but jazzy 'Gangsta', probably one for those who loved T Power's early work on the SOUR label.

Drifting Through
Drifting Through (1-sided 12")
Cat: RSTURBO 002. Rel: 09 Dec 20
  1. Drifting Through (6:18)
Review: Anonymous artist RS Turbo made a big mark back in July with a first one sided white label 12" that harked back to a period between 92 and 94 when rave took a dark turn. Now he or she or they return with another red hot missive. 'Drifting Through' is fierce jungle with an old school feel. The drums tumble endlessly and keep you on edge as purging bass goes even deeper down below you. Some nice piano deployment and careful vocal yelps add soul to this most essential and high impact of 12"s.

Memories
Memories (1-sided 12")
Cat: RSTURBO 001. Rel: 21 Jul 20
  1. Memories (6:20)
Review: Anonymous artist on white label business; "Memories" is a powerful flashback to that magic crossover between 92 and 94 when rave music took some of its most dark and twisted turns. Hurricane breaks, treacle sub bass and paranoid pads, softened ever-so-slightly by a classic breathy vocal, this bangs with future promise now just like its earlier incarnations would have done almost 30 years ago. This should bring back some memories for you...

Cat: SENSI 007. Rel: 26 Nov 19
  1. Rumbleton - "Codex Indica" (5:21)
  2. Rumbleton/DJ Clear - "Ez Mi Bredda" (6:51)
Review: Sweet reggae jungle from one of Canada's sharpest selectors... "Codex Indica" takes the lead with a dynamic build up that fixes full focus around the oceanic skanks that ebb and flow across spacious breaks and humming subs before crashing into a breakbeat pay-off. "Ez Mi Bredda" on the B sees old Rumbles teaming up with DJ Clear for a pacier cut that's still just as roomy, hypnotic and dubwise but lead from the front with drums from the off. Stand firm!

  3. Jinx & Run Tingz Cru - "Lava Mouth" (feat Junior Morgan) (4:09)
  4. Brian Brainstorm - "Returning To Life" (5:45)
Review: Watch your basins, cause this one is not mucking about - it is a freeform collision of reggae, dub, ragga, jungle, drum & bass and more. Run Tingz Cru open up with 'Beautiful World (Nothing Wrong)' (feat Anthony B & Da Fuchaman) and reach for the skies with rinsing breakbeats, breakdowns that drop the tempo, and drops to below the doors off. Audiomission & Subcriminal expire a drake more stripped back drum & bass sound complete with ragga vocals and then Jinx & Run Tingz Cru step it up again to send the club into overdrive as the horns keep on going off like gun shots.

  14. Do You Remember (feat Kevin Garrett) (3:41)
  15. Leave It For Tomorrow (feat Elli Ingram) (4:25)
  16. Adrenaline (feat OLIVIA) (3:58)
Review: Rudimental's third full-length, "Toast To Our Differences", was originally slated for release back in September, but ended up being delayed. So was it worth the wait? It's certainly a colourful, vibrant and expansive affair, with the quartet drawing on a far wider palette of influences than were evident on their previous albums. Check, for example, the title track's glistening, South African style tropical pop, the piano-powered cheeriness of "These Days", the soaring power pop of previous single "Sun Comes Up" and the auto-tune heavy EDM-house stomp of "Scared of Love". Given their superstar status, it's unsurprising to see an impressive cast list of guests and collaborators - Major Lazer, Rita Ora and Ladysmith Black Mambazo included - while this "Deluxe Edition" includes a trio of extra tracks.
