The Razors Edge (6:16)
Full Cry (6:06)
Review: Vinyl Fanatiks take us back in time once again with this powerful slab of early jungle justice from 1994. Previously released on Monita's Skelton Records, which was launched in 1992 and played an influential role in the burgeoning jungle sound, both cuts pack an incredibly timeless punch. 'The Razors Edge' was nodding at Reinforced but doing its own cosmic thing with massive pans and huge layers of space. 'Full Cry' tolls the bells with its alien stabs, stop/start motion and twisted tension. Forever future.

Inhabitants Of Pandemonium (5:35)
Retribution (7:00)
Epilogue To Freedom (6:06)
Review: Spirits From An Urban Jungle were a jungle supergroup comprising of JMJ (EZ Rollers) & Richie and Tekniq, who between them continued to release music through the 90s and 00s on scene stalwarts such as Moving Shadow, Formation and Good Looking. But the group itself only had two releases back in 1994 on White House Records before they disbanded. Urban Decay EP is their second and final release - a blitzing four-tracker in their own patented mode of spitting, classic early junglism. With distinctive anti-deforestation and anti-civ themes, it's a much-sought gem for a good reason; its sound - from the soul coos on 'Retribution' to the voxpops on 'Inhabitants Of Pandemonium' - is spiritual, seeming to hark back to a prehistoric age.

The Dawndest Thing (6:36)
Review: In the realm of electronic music, Silver Fox's Dread by Dawn emerges as a captivating time capsule from the golden age of jungle and hardcore. Originally released in 1993 and meticulously reissued in 2024, this rare gem has lost none of its potency. The album's four tracks exude a haunting and otherworldly atmosphere, characterized by ominous doom-infused soundscapes and unmistakable jungle and hardcore rhythms. Central to the album's allure is its masterful utilization of the iconic "amen break," a drum loop that has become synonymous with the genre. Silver Fox weaves this pulsating rhythm into a mesmerizing tapestry of dark and melodic samples, including ethereal voices and haunting sci-fi elements. The result is a deeply hypnotic and immersive listening experience that transports listeners back to the halcyon days of electronic music's boundary-pushing experiments.

Brotherhood (7:27)
Stockholm Syndrome (5:00)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Mako's Utopia label continues to be an essential outpost for anyone hungry for the latest steps forward in drum & bass, and here the man himself links up with the mighty Seba for two razor sharp excursions into moody, precision-engineered club gear that wears its experience out front. 'Brotherhood' is an absolute massive tune, holding down the pressure for an extended run time and getting crafty with the edits without ever over-cooking the recipe. On the flip, 'Stockholm Syndrome' takes a more atmospheric approach led by overcast synths and driven by a crisp-as-you-like beat - all the better to let the leads do the talking.

Supa Ape - "Split A Split Second" (6:00)
Junglord - "Ready For Retaliation" (4:38)
Sully & OmniRhythm - "Next Level" (3:31)
Simply Dread - "Hard To Tell" (6:40)
Review: UKJ keeps the flame of old-school breaks and jungle afire with its latest four-track V/A 12", with contributions from label co-boss Junglord, Supa Ape, Sully, OmniRhythm and Simply Dread all in tow for the inflammatory sacrifice. Unlike your usual jungle, these four cuts verge on the insane, thanks to this label's commemorative grounding in the earliest days of jungle in its hardcore breaks and graff-adjacent days. We wager that back then, there was more room for experimentation before the "sound" got standardised and fetishised. Here's a cogent recollection of that time - a time of vocal one-shots, dramatic classical music samples and rave stabs, sure - but above all, just a generally wilder and more rapacious indulging of the promise of what was once called breakscience; Junglord's 'Ready For Retaliation' and Dread's 'Hard To Tell' tend towards UK hardcore on this front, ultrafast breaks-drilling and buzzsawing away, with glee.

LIN003 (4:40)
LIN004 (4:10)
Review: The North Quarter locks in another superbly stylish EP of functional but characterful drum & bass rhythms here. This one comes from LIN000 and features bunch of self titled tracks. The first is a supper, with fluid bass and low end oscillations. The second is more roomy and cancerous. It operates in an underwater world of bendy bass and crisp hits, then the flip side opens with a more raw, textural and fixing mix of synths and clacking hits before the closer pairs a high speed breakbeat with synths that twist and turn at their own speed.

Review: Submorphics deals in a unique sound: lo-fi drum n' bass. Yes, what was once reserved for a new style house can definitely be abstracted into other genres, contrary to what the less open-minded among us would have you believe. 'Verona Highway' is just that: working in old soulful house samples and self-recorded highpassed radio synths, the Netherlands-based artist works in a serene palette of sounds to convey a drum n' bassy idea of a late night Detroit to Chicago road trip aesthetic.

Cyberrave (4:35)
Serious Talking (4:44)
Review: ScruScru is a name you might well recognise but it is fair to say you might not recognise his work on this first release from Talkbox. He shows a very different side off the back of plenty of top edits that bottle up plenty of disco and Bossanova vibes. Here he has teamed up with Russia's dubplate don BR Selecta for an EP full of energy and joy. 'YEAH YEAH' is happy-go-lucky garage with pitched-up vocals and lively drum, 'Get My Gruv' is a kinetic two-stepper and 'Cyberrave' is just that with its all-out synth madness and flurries of breaks, then 'Serious Talking' closes out on a darker jungle tip. A varied and vital 12' for sure.

Review: Jazzy foundation styles from Chris Read and James Curry's Suburban Architecture alias. As with previous outings such as Turning Point, Solar Winds and Alternative Futures, the vibe is deep, dreamy and timeless. And in this case, it comes with two very clear stories. The two versions of 'Inside' hit with an introspective headbutt, wrapped up in a Good Looking flavoured coating of cosmic funk, while 'Outside' dig deeper into the jazz and house music influences on jungle. Both absolutely kill it, whether you play them in or outdoors.

Visions '96 (Blame remix) (6:00)
Future Jazz '95 (DJ Trace remix) (6:05)
Review: Suburban Architecture is a project from Chris Read and James Curry which seeks to explore the expressive potential of drum & bass as a vessel for soulful musicality and rolling pressure alike. Carrying the torch from atmospheric d&b and the approachable tones of the Hospital Records crew, their latest 10" finds them turning to veritable legends for remixes which cement the angle they're exploring. Blame is up first, reworking 'Visions '96' in his own mould of melancholy, heart-rending composition strapped to the crispest of beats. 'Future Jazz '95' finds DJ Trace taking up the mantle and serving another masterclass in mellow, introspective d&b as pliable for the dancefloor as it is suited to home-listening reveries.

Review: Oh gosh! Shogun's special Shuriken vinyl series hits its sixth edition with some of the label's biggest remix bombs of yore. Calyx & Teebee's twist on Spor's game-changing 'Aztec' takes the lead and remains one of the best remixes the Ram duo have ever done. Calibre's take on Alix Perez, Spectrasoul and Peven Everett's 'Forsaken' is up there with the original in terms of its beauty and simplicity. Meanwhile on the B, Phace gives Icicle and SP:MC a total neuro shoeing before we end Ivy Lab's evergreen take on Spectrasoul & dBridge's 'Glimpse', arguably one of the finest cuts Shogun has ever released. Twos On A Pack Of Ten (4:35)
Review: Oh gosh! Since Ulterior Motive disbanded, Settle Down has gone from ravey strength to ravey strength. Lowering the tempo just a smidgeon, he's found himself painting from a vibrant palette that isn't governed by the tight rules of drum & bass, aligning himself more with the Biceps and Special Requests of the world and the sounds really shine as a result. Both of these have been on dub for some time, 'The Special' nods sweetly at Sade before burying its head in the biggest bass scoop it can find while the brilliantly titled 'Twos On A Pack Of 10' dives into dreamier breakbeat pastures - before breaking into a serious venomous bassline. Get down!

Inside Your Mind (7:24)
Review: Swedish drum & bass don Seba is one of the best in the game and few would argue. For his next trick he digs into his archive and reissues a series of tunes on the Secret Operations Reissue Vol1 series. All of the four cuts have been newly remastered for the occasion and the first two feature the vocals of Robert Manos. 'Pieces' is first and pairs his lush tones with prickly drum rotations full of texture. 'Captain Freak' is more raw and hard hitting and then comes the album version of the more extra terrestrial and cosmic drum & bass of 'External Reality' while 'Inside Your Mind' shuts down with a dark and menacing bassline.

Review: The Secret Operations label is no longer operating in the shadows as it hits release number 35. Up to now it has continually served up superb drum & bass from a range of artists that has turned plenty of heads. This one comes from the legendary Seba and it kicks off with 'Are We Dreaming', a busy tune packed with flurries of breakbeats and plenty of cosmic chord work. On the flipside, 'Interstellar' has a funkier broken beat pattern but retains is astral sense of melody.

Wake Up Call (5:58)
Fire Like This (6:51)
The Dribbler (6:51)
Review: Swedish junglist Seba continues to dive into the back catalogue of his Secret Operations imprint and offer up EPs that feature remastered (and sometimes lightly remixed) versions of some of his classic cuts. On this second volume in the 'Secret Operations Reissue' series, he raids the catalogue of tracks he produced alongside Paradox in the mid 2000s. On side A you'll find a re-wire of their 2004 classic 'Wakeup Call', a punchy but deep, sub-heavy and atmospheric roller featuring fantastic lead vocals from legendary house vocalist Robert Owens. Over on the flip there's a chance to cop two cuts from 2005: the 'Apache'-sampling, rumbling sub-bass-propelled workout 'Fire Like This' and the punishing, jazz break-sporting sweatiness of 'The Dribbler'.

Inkasso (with Krazy) (6:17)
Legion (6:19)
Review: Swedish d&b pioneer Seba continues to roll out more reissues from his Secret Operations label vaults, taking back over 15 years to some of his most career-defining work. The swaggering opener 'Your Deepest Love', the ice cold finale piece 'Legion' and the breath-taking 'Forever' all take us back to the mid-2000s (2006/7 to be precise) when Seba and his label really started to make their own independent mark in drum & bass. For good measure and balance he's also including 'Inkasso'. A little more recent in his discography at only eight years old, but just as hard hitting and timeless - Seba always hits the spot whatever era you find him at.

Day By Night (4:10)
Review: Seba's Secret Operations label is continuing its productive run into the archives with this fourth volume of reissue gold. Seba's sound is the kind which transcends the ages, sporting a luxurious, high-end production finish which means tracks like 'Special Ops' hasn't aged a jot in 15 years. 'Day By Night' on the B2 deserves a special mention - this is the Swedish mastermind at his fiercest, toying with stop-start dynamics, folding in industrial strength tones and textures and building the junglism so vivid it nearly bursts out of the speakers and manifests as a 3D object right before your eyes.

Review: Sauce Direct makes its first plea to become your go-to outlet for muscular drum & bass workouts here and a solid shout it is too. Skins is behind the beats and there are four of them across this white label, hand-stamped 12". 'Split!' is all about crashing amens and taught bass, while 'Route R' has a more minimal drum line and soulful synths. 'Mind Expander' is pure dark energy for the dead of night while 'Frostbite' has the most textural and crashing breaks of the lot, with oversized blasts of bass and restlessly jerking rhythms.

Metempsychosis (6:56)
Rhea's Revenge (6:11)
Review: Sam KDC's voyage into parts unknown continues apace on this latest release for Samurai Music, as the producer takes tropes of d&b into ever more meditative, swampy surroundings. There's a creeping intensity to 'Indra's Net' which will go down a storm with anyone exploring that fertile crossover between deep techno and tech-step. 'The Shroud' is a more mystical affair, while 'Metempsychosis' leans in on hidden layers of detailed synth work and a slowly modulating time-stretched snare that lodges itself in your skull. 'Rhea's Revenge' finishes off on a taut note, bringing its own sub-tropical climate and a plethora of subliminal details to get your very far outside your body through the power of sound alone.

Review: You can always be sure of a hugely affecting trip when you tune into something from Sacred Rhythms. And so it proves with this new one from Slam Mode. These are four hugely involving and atmospheric tracks steeped in ambiance. 'Ogman' is humid, dusty and spiritual with its late-night bass subtleties and sustained chords. 'Mientra Duermes' (Reimagined) has a celestial melodic feel over ramshackle house drums and 'Monopole' gets heavy on cancerous and dubbed-out drums with more cosmic chord work serve ing to expand your mind. 'Modus Operandi' is a lush and jazzy deep jungle workout to close.

Review: On Tell Me, Skeptical capitalises on the freedom afforded by his own Rubi label by dialling back his established d&b sound and presenting a half-time trip into downtempo territory. That shouldn't be mistaken as a softening of his production chops, because there's still massive amounts of weight as he warps snarling bass around stark drums on 'Tapestry'. 'Atomic' goes further into a minimal, dubbed out sound with carefully executed low end growl which carries the torch from DMZ's earliest soundsystem meditations.

'Rhubarb' is the dreamy cut of the bunch, easing us in gently with its gentle swirling strings, before 'Capsize' pushes us deep under the water with its robust murky militancy. Tailored for festivals, it pays homage to the roots with big party energy. Meanwhile on the remix front we're bombarded with an all-star cast as UK OGs Bizzy B and Ed Rush both get stuck in alongside Mike under his Deformer alias. Bizzy is all about the modern rave twist while Ed Rush gets an old Bad Company style and Deformer goes all-out breakcore. Elsewhere on this double 12" opus we see Mackadena get the breaks on, Rotterdam Terror Corps go full hardcore and Akira teasing us with a little twist of gabber. High grade Dutch business.

Review: London wax institution Phonica continue to celebrate their 20th anniversary as a label in deep-digging, highly eclectic style. This fourth sampler continues to hint at a much larger VA album with a wide range of sounds across the techno/jungle axis. Tim Reaper & Comfort Zone get us in the groove with the savage drum funk of 'Subterranean' while Toby Tobias eases down the tempo and takes us to some mystical places on the Balearic-on-Mars funk of 'On My Mind'. Meanwhile on the flip Shy One goes full-on Co-Op / Bugz vibes with its sparse broken beat jazziness while Orphic's Kieran Jandu closes the EP on a bumping early 90s-inspired techno roll-out. Happy anniversary Phonica.

Review: SB81 first appeared on Metalheadz back in 2013 with the Dancer In The Dark / Back To 33 12, and since then the Wolverhampton mainstay has kept up cosy relations with Goldie's D&B temple. Picking up where 2018's Future Point EP left off, SB81 goes in on four detailed, cinematic cuts that show how much space for world-building there really is around razor-sharp breakbeats. 'Picture This' is drenched in dramatic poise, while the beats fall more like crunchy electronica than run of the mill D&B. 'Etched Within' has a sweeter demeanour, but it's no less richly rendered. The production and composition are absolutely next level throughout this record, proving SB81 is still in a league of his own, and that Metalheadz still know how to sign a deadly record.

Even So (with Outrage) (4:48)
Is Jazz Is (with Acid_Lab) (5:50)
Echoes (with Scale) (5:00)
Mindrumming (with Outrage) (5:00)
Review: It's collabo time! Metalheadz mysterious Sonar's Ghost links up with a few old friends for four slabs of incendiary, ice cold slammage. Outrage (AKA Nomine), Acid Lab and Scale are all involved and the goods are nothing but high grade. Each cut hits hard and tickles the deepest corners and quarters of your soul but special highlights include the glacial tension and funk of 'Echoes' (with Scale), the jazzier twists and turns of 'Mindrumming' and 'Even So' (both with Outrage) and the beautiful horn weaving futurism of 'Is Jazz Is' with Acid Lab. What a crucial collection.

Review: Scar has become integral to the contemporary drum & bass scene over the last eight or so years and has left several top-notch tunes on labels like this one in their wake. They now make a welcome return to Metalheadz with The Road Less Travelled VIP, which is new takes on their 2022 album of the same name. On the buttons are some of the pair's closest musical colleagues as Zero T, Nookie and Artificial Intelligence all come through with fine fresh new takes and SCAR themselves also offer up a trio of their own smart reworks which following many requests now land on their own slab of coloured wax.

Cry For You (Dkn remix) (4:36)
Review: Reload to 2017, Soul Intent dropped one of his most comprehensive bodies of work to date: 'Delusions Of Grandeur'. Over six years later, here come the remixes from the likes of Ed:it, Chromatic, DKN and Soully himself. Uncompromising, underground and straight to core, each reboot really hones in on the pure drum & bass craft of the originals. Ed:it takes 'Test Fire' to Metalheadzian places, while Chromatic's take on 'Took Funky' goes full on turbo mode. Elsewhere Soul Intent's VIP of 'Nearly There' adds a little extra va-va-voom while DKN's take on 'Cry For You' finishes the EP with iciest happy slap you've ever endured. Grand!
