Falls To You VIP
Cat: SIG 027. Rel: 18 Sep 20
  1. Falls To You VIP (6:05)
  2. End Of Meaning (5:16)
Review: Northern Ireland's Dominick Martin, or Calibre, to the drum & bass buying public, has a reputation for bringing new angles on this well-worn sound and these two new sides of vinyl are no exceptions. The VIP version of Falls To You sees his crisp, irresistible beats doing their magic but the piano, reflective vocal and minimal electronic flourishes lend this roller a spooky, eerie quality. The flip track End of Meaning has a slightly warmer, more optimistic vibe but is still reflective, the vocals being sent through echoey dub effects for maximum atmospherics. Definitely ploughing his own furrow, as ever, Calibre demonstrates here why those in the know will always check what he's up to.

Taciturn (12")
Cat: SIG 024. Rel: 14 Dec 18
  1. Taciturn (6:03)
  2. Butter Love (5:39)
Review: Calibre has been on fire this year, serving up two albums, a swathe of killer collaborations and a handful of fine solo singles. Here he rounds off 2018 in fine style with a pair of polished cuts on his own Signature Records imprint. A-side 'Taciturn" is as musically vibrant and expansive as you'd expect, with poignant piano motifs, sustained chords and breathtakingly beautiful, high register soul vocals rising above punchy breakbeats and warm but weighty bass. Flipside "Butter Love" operates along similar lines, with Calibre wrapping spacey electronics, melancholic strings and liquid synths around a snappy, bass-heavy groove. It's perhaps a little more sub-heavy than the A-side, though both tracks are equally as polished and glassy-eyed.

White Horses
Cat: SIG 026. Rel: 18 Sep 20
  1. White Horses (5:18)
  2. Living For (5:44)
Review: Calibre aka Dominick Martin pairs up with DRS, each taking one side of this 12" and each more than holding their own. Martin continues his current obsession with the pure sound of the real piano, a powerful antidote to the more synthetic sounds we're more used to hearing in the genre. Add a supreme male vocal in plaintive mood,. declaring "I've been looking for love in all the wrong places" and you've got something that really stand out of the crowd. Living For by DRS is more of straight anthem, with reggae influences and a hip-hop vocal giving it a proper lighters-in-the-air atmosphere, its conscious lyrics very much echoing the mood of Britain in 2020. Two very different tracks, for sure, but this package is strong in its diversity.

  2. Komplete Kontrol (5:22)
  3. Rise In Time (5:12)
  4. War Ina Babylon (4:29)
Review: The heavenly Sozialisticher return with more head-bending heroics. This time from longstanding experimenter, fringe-pusher Neil Gaeggeler under his Celsius guise. Brash, blunt and choppier than a night at sea with 100 lumberjacks, heavy pressure remains throughout as "This Rules" lives up to its name with ruded out badness, "Komplete Kontrol" blurs our vision with its deft energy, "Rise In Time" subverts a dreamy rave vocal and twists us inside out with turbine breaks while "War Ina Babylon" closes on a riotous ragga flex. Immense, intense; this makes sense.

  2. End Of 92 (5:47)
  3. My Heart Keeps Jumping (5:05)
  4. Doin It Live (6:51)
Review: Ninety Two Retro and 7th Storey Project link up once again (the last time was in 2013 with the mighty DJ Excel 12") with four previously unreleased tracks by hardcore/trance maestro Steve Stewart AKA The Charm. "He Thinks He's Bad" takes the lead with its elastic bass and spiralling arpeggios before more euphoric/GOA-edged synths go full hurricane on the title track. Meanwhile on the B we have the darker proto jungle spaciousness and sudden synth salvo of "My Heart Keeps Jumping" before "Doin It Live" closes the show with a mean Prodigy-on-steroids hardcore headbutt. Crisp, punchy, and still fresh almost 30 years later, this is an outstanding excavation by both Ninety Two and 7th Storey.

  1. Chatta B - "Journey Into Sound" (4:37)
  2. Chatta B - "Dub Fe Dub" (5:01)
  3. Potential Bad Boy - "Jungle Sound Scape" (4:01)
Review: Following the recent Potential Bad Boy reissue 'Retro 3', here comes another blast from the foundational past with the short-lived Redskin imprint. This time it's back to 1994 with the producer previously known as Chatterbox (with Big Vern on Noise Factory) taking the lead with a killer reggae sample and happy-slapping breaks on 'Journey Into Sound' and a champion loving vocal on 'Dub Fe Dub'. Meanwhile Potential Bad Boy serves up another blueprint in the form of the deep space escapade 'Jungle Sound Scape'. A futurist vision with a honey-like sample, Chris McFarlane was way ahead of his time.

Hollow (hand-stamped 10")
Cat: CVWL 003. Rel: 11 Oct 19
  1. Hollow (4:22)
  2. Tings In Boots (3:34)
Review: The well-established drum & bass label Circle Vision continues with its often mysterious, uncredited white label series. This third instalment comes under the Circle Vision alias, which could be one person, loads of people or whatever else. What we do know is that "Hollow" bangs - frazzled bass zips about under big jungle breaks, with sci-fi pads bringing a sense of futurism to this bassbin bothering banger. "Tings In Boots" hits just as hard with raved up, strobe lit chords and some brilliantly old school sub-bass. Dark, raw, physical, it is pure dancing music of the highest order.

  4. Overlook - "All Of Them Witches" (Clarity remix)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has light surface marks, but otherwise in perfect working condition***

We've always loved Clarity for the amount of space he finds between the beats, but the gaps between releases could be a bit tighter... It's been four years since we heard from the young Cornish producer but he's making up for lost time with four fresh breakbeat bits. "Torsion" dons its finest three-stripes and gets bouncy on a rolling tribal tip, "Stateless" hits with more of a DSCi4 two-step funk vibe while "Taking Effect" is a techno inspired acid creeper with a palpitating touch of Spirit about its make-up. Welcome back Mr Clarity.

Review: Aussie breaksmith oft spotted lurking under the alias Sean Thomas or T McAlister, Cop Envy brings the broken heat to Cry Baby for the label's second release. Two sides, two stories; "Balanced" is a woozy aquatic halftime affair with big blunderbuss drums and rich abyssal textures while "Leisure" brings the tempo down for a groove that digs right into the genus of the hardcore continuum. Rolling, iced but not without its machine funk warmth. Nothing to cry about here at all...

Review: Here's a wonderful nugget very few of us knew about; dreamy 90s alternative singer / songwriter Julee Cruise (who was most famous for 'Falling' on Twin Peaks) was paired up with bonafide house pioneer Eric Kupper when they were both signed to Warner in the mid 90s... So they wrote two drum & bass tracks! Clearly inspired by the jazzier side of the genre (think Talkin' Loud, Full Cycle, Two Pages-era 4 Hero), both cuts breeze along with pace, soul and melody. Think Hybrid with a little Breakbeat Era and EZ Rollers. Think what a mad moment in musical history. Let's hope Kupper has more of these DAT delights stashed away.

  2. CCL & Flora FM - "Iridescent Lake" (8:13)
  3. Papers - "Beaman" (5:43)
  4. Silene - "Jiro" (6:17)
Review: "Gazillions" marks a first VA offering for the Fever AM label. It calls upon emerging producers from around the world and kicks off with Russian duo Formally Unknown. "Lotus Turbo" is a squelchy electro workout with kick drums to die for. CCL and Flora FM then come together for "Iridescent Lake", an utterly wild drum workout that will blow your socks off. London based brothers Ed and Rob work together as Paper on the old school bleep techno cut "Beaman" before Silene rounds things out with "Jiro", the most experimental of the lot thanks to its hall of mirror feel, slithering synths and jerking rhythms. Fresh indeed.

  4. Strafe - "Prisma" (4:55)
Review: Murkt welcome a rich array of talent for Unions 1 which includes four new cuts. Villem & Hadley open up with help from featured guests Riya & Collette Warren on 'Invisible,' a soulful roller with lush strings and tender pianos over a sleek beat. Fields goes solo for 'Hubby', a minimal stepper with a warped bassline that dries down deep. Chris Munky & Strafe explore soulful but icy soundscapes on their free flowing and liquid gem 'Crystal Glow' which is made all the more emotive by Ruth Royall and finally, Strafe serves up some twisted rhythms and deft drum programming on 'Prima' which will tie your mind and body in knots.

Review: Drum & bass's most unique gentleman Calibre plunders his vaults to compile a new collection of unreleased gems through the ages. As you'd expect, the end result is a timeless assault of lush grooves, soulful sonics and sweet skippy riddims. From the soft jazz insistency of "Honey Dew" to the hollowed harrowed bass tones of "Bellamee" via the harder, rave-referencing "Sagan" and the deep bass gurgles and DRS's reggae-style vocals on "Eschaton", the only issue here is the fact Calibre hasn't released them sooner. Unarguably incredible.

Review: Calibre has always displayed an affinity for sounds beyond the confines of drum & bass, but he's never gone as far out as he does on his latest album, "Planet Hearth". Leaving the club behind altogether, he's brought piano-led composition front and centre, folded in an ample dose of ambient and struck upon a cosy Autumnal mood that feels perfect for the time of year. There are still beats to be heard here and there, but this is a personal expression first and foremost. There's a catchy pop tint to "Eratik" while the title track is more concerned with minimalist composition and cathedral reverbs - that's the kind of range he's exploring on this accomplished departure from his usual comfort zone.

  8. When Sunday Goes (6:09)
Review: Although he's released tons of albums and singles, it's Calibre's long running "Shelflife" series that tends to get fans going the most. That's mainly because each volume contains sought-after cuts from his personal stash of productions that feature only in his DJ sets. As you'd expect, there's tons of brilliant fare to be found on volume six, which drops two years after its sold-out predecessor landed in stores. Our current favourites include the deep, warm and soulful roller "Years", the serious sub-bass pressure of the more skittish "Guide You Through", the futurist, mind-altering bass and hazy vocal samples of "Troible" and the dub-influenced weightiness of bustling deep D&B gem "Puppet". That said, all eight tracks are of the highest quality (as you'd expect given Calibre's record and reputation).

Review: Montreal auteur Michael Silver's eighth studio album finally enjoys a vinyl version and it sounds all the better for it. His first drum & bass LP-length exploration, "Liquid Colours" nods back to the D&B's most virulent strains of the mid 90s. Think Good Looking, Moving Shadow, Ascendant Groove, the dreamy, cosmic sheen and loose, splashy drums are the perfect playground for CFCF's jazzy, contemplative and musical signature he's had since his debut album "Continent". Highlights include the twinkling Sao Paulo-destined samba of "Oxygen Lounge", the PFM-style star-gazing odyssey of "Closed Space" and the pure Creative Source flavours of "Aquascape". Dive deep.

Review: Having scaled the heights of global superstardom over the last decade, Chase & Status last year returned to their more roughneck D&B roots with RTRN II JUNGLE, their retro-futurist fourth studio album. Here they continue that trend via RTRN II FABRIC, their first contribution to the legendary London club's popular DJ mix series. Full to bursting with high-octane Amen breaks, bowel-bothering sub-bass, punchy rhythms and MC flows, the mix sees the long-serving twosome pack 44 killer jungle and D&B cuts old and new into just under 80, all-action minutes. As you'd expect, it's packed with exclusives too - not least a wealth of unreleased Chase & Status productions and 'VIP' dubplate versions. If you love jungle and D&B, you need it in your life.

Review: Many years and many more 12"s have passed since Coco Bryce's last full album slapped us around the senses, but the wait has been worth it. "Night On Earth" captures the flying Dutchman in his most lucid state as he rolls out his acutely on-point contemporary jungle across two 12"s. Highlights include the dreamy breezes and cosmic touches of "Vertigo", the trippy Vibertisms of "Killing Me", and the darker steppier paranoia of "Polar" but let's face it; if you've so much as sniffed at a Myor release in your life you'll already know that every track is a highlight. There's no stopping Bryce right now.
