Death Row
Death Row (12")
Cat: DROW 001. Rel: 11 Dec 19
  1. Death Row (3:57)
  2. Murderin' MC (6:55)
Review: "Death Row" was Blame and Justice's first ever 12" release way back in and now it gets reissued for the first time. It's a hard hitting melange of big drum breaks, spoken word snippets and barrelling drums that is fun and high impact jungle of the highest order. "Murderin' M.C." is a darker tune with a rumbling bassline and shooting lasers synths that bring a more electronic and futurist feel, but still designed for club destruction. Big ups Modern Urban Jazz for the work on this one.

Intrigue 15: The Anniversary Collection
  1. Break - "Mind's Eye" (4:55)
  2. Superior Selectionz & Ben Soundscape - "Justa" (5:37)
  3. Roygreen & Protone & Ben Soundscape - "Ruffneck" (5:39)
  4. Luch & Joakuim - "Lifespan" (5:41)
Review: Since 2003, the Intrigue crew has been providing Bristol clubbers with regular doses of liquid funk and musically expansive drum and bass, first at their regular parties and, since 2008, on their offshoot label. Predictably, there's much to enjoy on this celebratory 12". Old pal Break steps up first with a veritable warm summer breeze of a roller, "Mind's Eye" - all punchy, snare-heavy beats, acoustic guitars, rumbling bass and dreamy freestyle vocals - before Superior Selectionz and Ben Soundscape join forces for the slightly more weighty but no less attractive "Justa". Over on side B, Soundscape returns to action alongside Ryogreen and Protone on the wobble bass-propelled stepper "Ruffneck", while Lurch - a lesser-known stalwart of the Bristol scene - delivers some delicious, Afro-tinged liquid funk alongside Joakuim. Rock solid.

Monolith (12")
Cat: DROOGS 005. Rel: 03 Mar 20
  1. Gremlinz & Jesta & Kalu - "Monolith" (5:23)
  2. Friske - "City Limits" (6:04)
Review: Last year the Droogs label released a sole EP of "hard hitters for wild dancefloors" - a split 12" featuring quality cuts by Holsten and Artilect. They've repeated the trick here, offering up a pair of slammers featuring contributions from four artists. Jesta and Kalu join Gremlinz on formidably heavy A-side "Monolith", a thrusting, mind-mangling fusion of crunchy jungle breaks, warped sub-bass pulses, scattergun percussion fills and creepy sonic textures. In comparison, Friske's flipside cut "City Limits" is positively laidback, though the creepy blend of sustained chords, short vocal samples, fizzing electronic flashes, raw bass and hot-stepping D&B drums are still formidably floor-friendly.

Golden Nugget
Golden Nugget (1-sided gold vinyl 12")
Cat: NUGGET 0001. Rel: 26 May 20
  1. Golden Nugget (4:01)
Review: Cruising off the heat of their Mayor Massiv outing just last week, long-time collaborators Jahganaut and Duburban collide once again for this shiny badass doubloon. One track, gold vinyl (naturally) and limited, it's another example of the collective's authenticity. Brazen drum funk, classic time-stretches, ragga vocal shots and rolling 4x4 drums rule the roost before some ice cold pads sweep you off your feet last minute. Timeless.

Various Artists EP
  1. Jem One - "Network" (6:04)
  2. Section - "Dark Phrases" (4:56)
  3. Future - "Daffy's Secret Project" (5:15)
  4. Sicknote, Sweetpea & Dissect - "Jahlocia" (6:08)
Review: This is how you kick off a new decade. Skeleton have been consistent with their brutalist dispatches since re-rising in 2014 and this new V/A levels things up once again. Jem One lights the fire with darkcore grit as layers of distorted breaks and strange alien rave textures twist in and out of the mix. Section follows with nasty rave stabs and a two-step so well chiselled you could trim your whiskers on it before Future flips things for an entirely different vibe on the minimal, subby and loose-limbed "Daffy's Secret Project". Finally Sicknote, Sweetpea and Dissect bring the funk on "Jahlocia". Once again the breaks are the focus but there's more than enough groove in the bassline to put on meat on everyone's table. Bad to the bones!

Marching EP
Cat: DK 001. Rel: 26 Nov 19
  1. Marching (4:00)
  2. Marching (Caspa remix) (3:47)
  3. Marching (Jook remix) (4:53)
Review: Unpronounceable name, uncategorizable sounds, absolute rudeboy: damagement Dutchman JLSXND7RS launches his new label Dark Knight with the relentless drum drama of "Marching", the long-awaited dub that's been doing the rounds for a few years (and supported by the likes of Sir Spyro, Simzee and Mala). Not only that but he's recruited two exceptional remixers: the don like Caspa adds a brutal take to the original with additional layers of bass savagery while Bristol alchemist Jook brings a much woozier hue to the palette. Keep on marching.

Concrete Jungle EP (reissue)
Concrete Jungle EP (reissue) (180 gram orange vinyl 12")
Cat: VFS 013. Rel: 22 Sep 20
  1. Soothe My Soul (5:19)
  2. Fake Lobsters (5:09)
  3. Doin' What You're Doin' (5:31)
  4. Doin' What You're Doin' (remix) (4:56)
  5. Experience (remix) (2:44)
Review: A concrete slab of history right here from Vinyl Fanatiks as all-round OG and Modern Urban Jazz founder Tony Justice and the hardcore producer Mercy (who was known as Rotor at the time) linked up for this breakthrough EP. One of the earliest releases to capture the move towards jungle's faster and darker textures - and heavily championed by Carl Cox at the time - over five tracks the two men map the exciting rave crossroads in 1992 and its many directions. From the positive thrust of tracks like 'Soothe My Soul' and 'Experience' to the much harder and aggier tracks like 'Fake Lobsters', this captures a totally unique and accelerated time in dance music.

  7. The Crow Knows (5:00)
  8. Codebreaker (5:51)
  9. Full Circle (6:32)
  10. Eclipse (5:50)
Review: While he may have released a multitude of singles since making his debut on Metalheadz way back in 1995, "Full Circle" is only James Spratling AKA J Majik's second album (his debut full-length, "Slow Motion", was released in 1997). It's a fitting title, all told, because the majority of the ten tracks on offer recall the kind of punchy-but-dreamy jungle/early D&B fusion that marked out Spratling's earliest releases. That means a succession of killer cuts that wrap deep space chords, ambient synths and heady electronic melodies around bustling, jungle style breakbeats and booming, mind-altering basslines. It's a giddy, unashamed blast from the past, but one that's certainly in keeping with the D&B scene's current wave of misty-eyed nostalgia.
