  1. Alix Perez - "White Lies" (4:52)
  2. Submarine - "Grunge" (5:15)
  3. Scepticz & Lavance - "Flatline" (4:07)
  4. Hyroglifics & Visages - "Searching" (4:19)
Review: Some 15 months after the first multi-artist "Folio" EP landed in stores, 1985 Music has dropped a sequel. It's another all-action affair, with all four cuts hitting home hard. Label founder Alix Perez kicks things off with "White Lies", a minimalist roller where metallic percussion hits and evocative soul vocals rise above a thoroughly filthy, wobble-powered bassline. Label favourites Submarine step up with sub-heavy hot-stepper "Grunge", before Scepticz and Lavance take things up a notch or two via the industrial strength distorted bass, mind-altering electronics and punchy beats of "Flatline". To round things off, Hyroglifics and Visages get together on the skewed but energy-packed creepiness of "Searching".

  1. BCee - "Sincerely Yours" (feat Leo Wood - Whiney remix) (4:50)
  2. Villem & McLeod - "Let It Breathe" (feat Leo Wood - Phaction remix) (5:14)
Review: Drum & bass fans will know the originals here as they've been big on the circuit. Now they get the remix treatment from two big dawgs in Whiney and Phaction. Whiney is first and layers in some devastating bass to BCee's 'Sincerely Yours', which repurposes it as a heavyweight peak time flex banger. High Contrast, DJ Marko and Reve LaVice have all been banging these already, and it might just be the flip-side that is the best. Phaction puts a golden touch on Villem & McLeod's 'Let It Breathe' that takes it form smooth roller to big time banger.

  1. Nine Strings (4:47)
  2. Eyes (4:28)
Review: Cor blimey governor, this'll put lead in your pencil. Radio 1 broadcaster and all-round badman Rene LaVice teams up with early 2000s donny hitmakers Future Cut for this incredible EP on Metalheadz. "Nine Strings" is pure breakbeat venom. Thunderous bass, grizzly funk and severe amounts of evil in all the right spaces and places, this is real grown up stuff right here. "Eyes" on the B carries just as much weight and horsepower but comes with just a smidgeon of deep dream soul.

  2. Tim Reaper - "Floating Through" (5:30)
  3. Trex - "Stay High" (5:37)
Review: It's nothing but stark steppery from the off on Transmute as Law & Wheeler sharpen their drums and space things out on a Source Direct level. Driven by the steps but powered by the warped low end, it's a timeless piece that swallows you whole. The consistently on-point Tim Reaper delivers some mind-altering drum edits on the junglised "Floating Through" while Mac 2 affiliate Trex nods his head to the likes of Krust with "Stay High", a cosmic sojourn that develops with increasing layers of trippiness. Powerful.

  1. Le Peuple De L'Herbe - "No Escape" (feat Uk Apache) (6:02)
  2. Tomawok - "Party Time" (feat Perfect Giddimani - Kursiva remix) (4:06)
  3. Tomawok - "My Sound" (Benny Page remix) (3:45)
  4. Isaac Maya & Mekha - "Bad Inna Dance" (feat Ranking Diximal) (6:17)
Review: PsychoQuake offshoot PsychoDynamik has long specialized in compilation style EPs brimming with ragga-fired jungle business and ruffneck drum and bass rollers. That's what you get on the sub-label's sizzling seventh release. Ragga toaster UK Apache rhymes at breathtaking speed over Le Peuple De L'Herbe's hot-stepping, dub-fired D&B riddim on punchy opener "No Escape", while fellow mic man Perfect Giddimani makes a similarly positive impression on Kursiva's reggae-drum and bass remix of Tomawok's jaunty "Party Time". Flip for Benny Page's more jungle-tinged - but similarly minded - remix of Tomawok's "My Sound" and the fantastically raw, rolling jungle/dub fusion of Isaac Maya and Mekha's "Bad Inna Dance".

  2. Tender Love (feat Steo) (4:57)
  3. Park Hill (feat Jubei) (5:16)
  4. Bayview (feat Submorphics) (5:22)
Review: Back in the autumn, sometime Metalheadz regular Lenzman launched his own label, The North Quarter. Here he returns for a second outing, bringing with him a quartet of tasty tracks. IAMDDB lends a hand on the sweet, skittish and soulful opener "In My Mind" - all fizzing D&B breakbeats, tumbling piano lines and evocative vocals - before soul man Steo unfurls a heartfelt vocal on the similarly breezy "Tender Love". On the flip, you'll find the moody, urban-sounding D&B-rap roller "Park Hill" (which may or may not be a tribute to the infamously bleak Sheffield housing estate of the same name), and the jazzy D&B warmth of Subphonics' collaboration "Bayview".

LEVL #2 (12") (1 per customer)

  1. Nullpunkt #1 (5:52)
  2. Nullpunkt #2 (6:18)
  3. Nullpunkt #3 (6:32)
  4. Nullpunkt #4 (4:56)
Review: Felix K, Dylan Brownsword and Joe Baker's LEVL strikes again! Previously spotted on Warp outpost Arcola, these four excursions land on Felix's own Nullpunkt and they're every bit as trippy and beguiling as we hoped they'd be. Sitting in a strange tempo-melting, boundary-smashing hinterland, "#4" is all bounces and strange time-signatures, "#2" is the type of halftime jungle you'd expect to be made in the upside down realm of Stranger Things while "#3" raises the pressure and intensity even more with a technoid 170 stampede that wouldn't go amiss on Samurai Horo. Last but not least, "#4" closes the EP on a tribal note. Slower and moodier with percussion layered in a cannon-like way, it leaves you with more questions than answers... Like every Nullpunkt release so far. LEVL up!

  1. Outnumbered (7" edit) (5:18)
  2. Syncopated City Revisited (7" edit) (5:21)
Review: To celebrate the tenth anniversary of 'Syncopated City', arguably the best London Elektricity album (if sadly not the best selling), Tony Colman has decided to give the album a light going over. He's called the reissue the "The Director's Cut". It's from that download-only set that these two "2018 versions" of classic album cuts are taken. Like much of the rest of the set, both brilliantly join the dots between Colman's fluid and musically rich take on drum and bass, modern soul and classic jazz. Both "Outnumbered" and the arguably slightly superior "Syncopated City Revisited" are duets of sorts, with guest female vocals sparring with Colman (who, somewhat surprisingly, is actually quite a good singer) over the superb backing of the talented London Elektricity live band.

New Age (12")
Cat: SUBB 008. Rel: 24 Sep 19
  1. New Age (6:48)
  2. Stone Cold (7:28)
Review: We've been waiting a LONG time for this! Loxy & Resound's most demanded dub since 2008, "New Age" has cult status and it's not hard to hear why; super spacious and so broad and vital in its sound, it still sounds futuristic to this day. "Stone Cold" kicks ass for a 2009 track, too. Once again unreleased and demanded by the heads for the last 10 years, this one takes us deeper down Loxy & Resound's rabbit hole, before that divine vocal cuts through the mix and it's game over. Ageless.

  14. Don't Give Up Now (feat Bulgarian Goddess) (6:09)
Review: Following its CD and digital download release last autumn, London Elektricity's fine new album - Tony Colman's eighth studio set - finally gets a vinyl release. For the uninitiated, "Building Better Worlds" builds (sorry) on the "big band" concept Colman unveiled at Hospitality In The Park in 2017, offering soaring, orchestrated tracks that take drum & bass to musically expansive new heights. There's barely a drum machine or sample in sight, while what electronic sounds that have been included are used sparingly. The results are undeniably impressive, with the assembled collective's warm and soulful tracks providing enjoyable listening throughout. It might raise a few eyebrows amongst jungle purists, but ignore the haters: this is a very fine album indeed.

Review: LSB and DRS: combos don't come any stronger than this! We already know this from incredible tracks like "The View" and "New Day" but "The Blue Hour" is a whole other level of their soulful prowess. Jazzy, smoky, thoughtful and blues to its very core, there's a musicality and spirit to this album that transcends any genre thanks to both Del's disarming lyrics and barbed charm and Luke's natural soulmanship and sense of groove. From the smoke-stacked horn-based dream "Umbrellas" to stunning cosmic risers like "Keep The Time" and "Could Be" and to every other planet that orbits in between, this is one of the best albums in the D&B sphere this year. We will look back on this as a timeless classic. Essential.
