Review: As their superb name suggests, The Jazzassins make jazz tinged drum & bass. Never was that more apparent than on this silky new split 12" for Jazzsticks Recordings, which features Paul SG on the other side. His opener 'Kings Town' is a bubbly, reagge-laced rhythm with blasts of rapping bass and tumbling drums that demand you dance. He then offers 'Parts Of Me,' a harder edge stepper with big and icy hi hats. The Jazzassins for their part seduce with 'Evolution' and then get more edgy and artsy with the hopping 'Bawrley.'

Review: Taking off where her debut album Spurn Point left us in 2014, musical innovator and serial boundary blurrer Shelley Parker returns with another long playing adventure. Her debut on Hypercolour, it's another immersive and very fluid experience that rattles through a whole range of flavours and forms. From the slower hardcore breakbeat style cuts like 'Glisten' and 'Cage' to more up tempo fires like the dubbed out 'Scrubs Lane' and the rampant sci-fi sizzler 'Coldstream' by way of raw, uncompromised experimentalism like 'Deluge' and 'The Faun', Wisteria is another exciting reflection of Shelley's wider work as an installation artist and sound performer. Following releases on re:st, UVB-76 and Voidance Records, the Italian producer further explores his introspective sound, joining the dots between experimental psychedelia, dark ambient and post-drum&bass. Review: Since he first landed on our radar via Vivid a few years back, Yosh has dished out enough high grade garage and breakbeat gear to fuel the scene on his own. Not only a prolific producer, he's also got a razor sharp flair which edges him in front of a crowded scene, and now he's back to Vivid to show us exactly what he's about with a 12-track double-pack, his biggest release to date. In one sense you should know exactly what to expect - elevated steppers and deft rollers, but the fundamental appeal of Yosh is all those ear-snagging traits which make his tracks sparkle, and you never know what they're going to be until the needle's tracking in that groove. Now you can enjoy that sensation 12 times over - a good deal if ever we saw one.

Review: Workforce is a solo project from Jack Stevens, best known as one half of crisp modern D&B masters Spectrasoul. Following the runaway success of the Late Night Soundtrack series and drops on Exit, 1985 Music and Critical, Stevens is back on Must Make Music with a new album of finely sculpted rollers shot through with melancholic moods. Madi Lane sets the tone with her heartfelt vocal on 'Death Dreams' while the snatches of singing on 'Broken' equally casts the record in a meditative space. This is soundsystem music for heavy hearted headphone trips as much as the club, but the likes of 'Flight Instructions' have more than enough heft to shake the crowd up good n' proper.

Review: Welsh warrior Quartz continues his great run of form as he follows his recent Rupture EP with this megalithic four-pack on Mako's Utopia. 'Krokodil' snaps us into reality with a fittingly dystopic setting with urgent vocal stabs and glacial breaks, 'Gateway' takes us on a breezier mission while 'Rituals' is all about those chubby rounded bass/kick fluctuations and sinewy stabs; minimal in make-up, maximum in force. Finally the title track closes off this bleak, chaotic serenade with some outrageous drumfunk choppage. Serious jungle business for 2022; life ain't always rosy... it can be very thorny too.

Review: The Okbron label is at the heart of the modern drum & bass landscape and puts out a steady stream of high quality music to keep itself there. This latest drop from Axis is sweet one that will sound all the better in summer. Opener 'Ill Mansion Jazz' is as silky as they come, with plunging bass, shimmering synths and melancholic chords over dusty high speed breaks. On the flipside is the jazzy late night vibe of 'Barumba Nights' with its double bass and mysterious sax leads. Super classy stuff.

Review: Blocks & Escher are staples of the modern day Metalheadz roster, having released their debut album Something Blue on the label in 2018 alongside a steady run of singles since 2014. Now they're back to help toast 25 years of Goldie's inimitable imprint, and they're doing so with a new track entitled 'Bird' which carries on the thread of dynamic, modernist D&B they presented on their LP four years ago. On the flip comes a long-awaited treat as their track 'Madness', originally released on Platinum Breakz 4 in 2014, gets remastered and cut onto wax for the first time. It's been hugely in demand for such an outing, so don't expect this one to hang around for long.

Review: Planet Mu main man Mike Paradinas has been busy throughout 2022, with this expanded edition of new album 'Hello' also including the entirety of the recently released (and sonically similar) 'Goodbye EP'. As Mu Ziq, Paradinas has always been good at inspirational, boundary blurring brilliance, with his tracks routinely adding gorgeously tuneful lead lines, ear-pleasing chords and jumpy IDM basslines to beats variously inspired by breakbeat hardcore, jungle and darkcore. While the collection is undoubtedly balanced and includes some less manic material geared towards home listening, it's the club-baiting tracks that often hit home hardest. Amongst the many highlights are the disco-sampling 'Green Chaos', the fiendishly sub-heavy 'Modulated Angel', the loved-up and subtly dubbed-out future anthem 'Goodbye VIP' and the three different takes on 'Rave Whistle'.

Review: Heads will know Aphrodite is the no-effs-given 90s drum & bass artist of choice, with the producer's music inevitably occupying any curious digger's wantlist. Aphrodite knows you want it, which is why they're on a massive reissue campaign. Cashing in and all that - they can't resist. 'King Of The Beats' throws back to the dawn of amen break-cutting with a sampled reference to Mantronix, while 'Music's Hypnotising' blends an unusual arpeggiation with techstep motifs and a popular stock vocal sample. 'Dub Moods' and 'Spice' strip things back further, conveying ever-increasing Ridley-Scott-film-set moods.

Review: Russian jungle pioneer Dissident makes his debut on Vivid with four intergalactic tear-ups of the highest order. 'Recover From Solvation' brings the classic Krome & Time vibes - deep space breaks, booming subs and trippy textures. 'Skybound' brings that bounce and those warm feels while 'Theta Phase' takes us deep, deep deep into hyperspace by way of a far away daydream. Last but not least 'Leave Us Lucid' closes on a J Majik style stepper spring. What an EP. If this is the sound of Dissident not quite waking up yet, he needs to stay in bed more often.

'Temple Of Boom' kicks off with fixing, brain-frying synths over relentless drum precision. It's a naggy track to shake up the floor. 'Out Of Control' is another fierce and fast-paced new school workout while the title track mixes up meticulous drum programming with funky brass, slamming bass and melodic patterns that bring the rave. The remix of 'Equatorial Bass' is a mix of floating breakdowns and revved-up drum & bass madness.
