  2. Apexxx North (6:14)
  3. Collection Of Noises (6:40)
  4. Extra Processing (3:05)
  5. Loosen The Moorings (3:29)
Review: After some great ones by Desert Sound Colony and label co-heads Alec Falconer and Tiago Walter, Ba Dum Tish are back with another curious release by the enigmatic Active Research. It's the sound of the '90s underground on the A side, with the dark drum & bass epic 'Howweryuu' and its Optical / Alex Reece influence, followed by the UK electronica throwback sounds on 'Apexxx North'. On the flip, things take a more abstract turn on the deep and dystopian electro bass journey "Collection Of Noises" followed by the sublime ambient bliss of "Loosen The Moorings".

  4. Dance Like Dolphin (Jay remix) (5:56)
Review: Fresh from her debut on Super Drama, Angel D'Lite returns with her Banoffee Pie debut 'Dolphins Have Sex For Pleasure'. Great title, beautiful sounds as Angel runs the hardcore gauntlet on 2020 blades... Within seconds of the breakbeat kicking in, 'Crystals' will realign your chakras while Diamante gets all floatation tank on you with a subversive downbeat remix. Flip for 'Dance Like A Dolphin', an equally ravey piece of hi-NRG dynamite laced with breaks and surging synths and occasional forays in juicy jungle techno 4x4s before Jay strips everything back to reveal a stern and dubby slice of deep house. Go bananas.

Review: Contemplative, playful and from the heart; both Spearhead bossman BCee and one of the genre's most prolific singer/songwriters Charlotte Haining share many traits, as they show here on their debut collaborative album Life As We Know It. With topics ranging from mental health to adoption and loss of loved ones, the duo traverse the drum & bass hinterland with some of the most thoughtful songs either of them have ever written. Featuring cameos from the likes of Etherwood, DRS, Logistics, Kove and Tempza, vibes range from rocket-thrusting melancholy ('Give Me A Break'), glistening piano-laced minimalism ('Endlessly Unlimited') and all liquid things in between. Life-affirming.

Review: Linking up for the first time since 'Thoroughbred', kindred spirits Sam Binga and Hyroglifics collide to create their biggest collaborative body of work to date; 'Wicked & Bad'. Not just a kooky title, it truly is loaded to the lips with naughty... The opening system shaker 'Wicked' with long-time compadre Redders, the ice cold electro thrills of 'Wits End', the Riko Dan-front bubbler 'Bad' and the trippy instrumental grime finale 'No Dice' are all primed with the wickedness, and indeed badness, one needs to survive in these nonviable times. Critical in more ways than one.

Cat: ELOISA 006. Rel: 13 Oct 20
  1. Runaway (6:01)
  2. Unleashed (6:00)
  3. Articulate (6:24)
Review: With huge tracks hitting across the board on the likes of 31, Critical and now Chris Inperspective's exciting new imprint Eloisa, Bungle's never sat so comfortably in his own groove before. A longtime Sao Paulo drum & bass treasure, he seldom fails to deliver and these three cuts are fine examples of his understated craft. 'Runway' is the heaviest cut of the bunch with echoes of 'Cocooned' in the high voltage bassline while 'Unleashed' rolls with subtle theatre thanks to the jazzy swinging drums and 'Articulate' closes on a strange rhythm. Blocky, woozy and nodding very heavily at techno. It's hard not to make comparisons to Krust right here. And no compliment comes higher.

  3. Top Banana Buzz Rush Junkie (5:49)
  4. Move & Groove (5:16)
Review: Diplomat has been involved in the industry in all kinds of ways over the years, most recently running Electro Avenue Records, but this his first release goes back to 1990 on Moving Shadow as part of Destruction Production before going solo in 1991 with this EP 'Here Comes The Mongo'. Fortunately the music has aged much better than the title as we're immersed in a rave wonderland with samples firing upside our senses at a rate of knots; from the hip-hop flavours and cascading stabs of the title to the ridiculous samples and musicality on the French love letter that is 'Channel Tunnel' (which would have only just opened at the time) this taps into a raw sense of fun and energy that captures the anarchy and open mindedness of the music at the time.

  4. Late Bloom (5:21)
Review: Rebellion Electronics bossman Seb Eusebeia makes his debut on Warehouse Rave with four stimulating outer-planetary explorations. Side A is a tale of two halves as 'Evolution I' and 'Evolution II' bounce and reflect off each other. The former, a mournful moment of halftime with creeped out arpeggios and chilling tones, the latter a more brazen up-tempo junglised twist. Flip for two more adventures; 'Liberation' indulges in a luxurious two minute beatless intro before jumping into a breakbeat frenzy before 'Late Bloom' closes the EP on an all-out jungle assault that you could imagine hearing at Rupture or in the sets of Dead Man's Chest. Amen to that.

Review: A concrete slab of history right here from Vinyl Fanatiks as all-round OG and Modern Urban Jazz founder Tony Justice and the hardcore producer Mercy (who was known as Rotor at the time) linked up for this breakthrough EP. One of the earliest releases to capture the move towards jungle's faster and darker textures - and heavily championed by Carl Cox at the time - over five tracks the two men map the exciting rave crossroads in 1992 and its many directions. From the positive thrust of tracks like 'Soothe My Soul' and 'Experience' to the much harder and aggier tracks like 'Fake Lobsters', this captures a totally unique and accelerated time in dance music.

Cat: AMEN 019. Rel: 09 Oct 20
  1. Frustration (Morgan Spiced remix) (6:41)
  2. Frustration (Tim Reaper remix) (5:43)
Review: Amenology return with another essential science lesson, once again returning to the mysterious Link and their 'Frustration'. Having previously been given two treatments last year (Exoplanet and Voxphoria) it's now time for two prominent murksmiths to get their hands mucky; Jenga Soundsystem's Morgan Spiced hurls the classic jungle kitchen sink at it with rawhide edits and the warbliest reverse basses you'll hear this year. Reaper's twist also has an old school flavour but more in the pads and those unrelenting hardcore drums. Two absurdly good versions. Unleash some tension with 'Frustration'.

Review: Two delicious slabs of Goodlooking-style timelessness right here from longstanding veteran Madcap. 'Hide' hits with a PFM-esque breeziness to it with twinkling arpeggios and subtle slices of surging diva vocals while 'Morning Time' surges us into the night with a much heavier groove. Full-on amens, urgent vocal one-shots, raw edits and a subtle funk that wouldn't have sounded out of place at Swerve back in 2000, Madcap knows the science and the soul.

Review: Mandidextrous on Prspct with The DJ Producer on remix duties... If you think that description alone sounds nutty, then the record will blow your mind. Mandi takes the lead with their Boxxi alias, laying a pretty chill (in comparison) ground work for the rave lunacy that follows. Firstly Mandi gives it a hyped-addled D&B twist before handing over the reigns to Luke Producer McMillan for an absolute sledgehammer Arial Assault remix before Mandi closes the EP down with another full-strength twist. 190 BPM non binary bedlam... Just the way the Amen 4 Tekno queen likes it. Ready for take-off?

Review: Monsieur-of-the-moment Mani Festo continues to flex his beats in all directions as he arrives at the equally flexible E-Beamz imprint. Following releases on the likes of Repertoire, Rupture and Boysnoize, he runs the full gamut here; 'Continuum' is a wobbled-out slab of breaks that nods towards instrumental grime, 'Baltic Sea' rekindles the old TCR or Botchit flames with just a wee smidgeon of rave magic, 'Full Circle' is all-out jungle while 'Explorer' drops the breaks entirely for an exercise in minimal techno. Finally 'What You've Done To Me' closes the show on an emotional one. Sublime.

Review: Time for a little rave rediscovery as Vinyl Fanatiks celebrate the work of Walsall's Nathan Jay. An early member of the east Midlands rave movement, Ova Doce made over 100 tracks between 1990 - 1995 but only a few of them ever saw the light of day, including these. Each one bulging with samples and a playful sense of fun, it ranges from the near evangelistic surges of 'Feel The Rush' to the heavy skanking of 'Bad Boys' to the hardcore sensibilities and brazen Genesis sample of 'Last Chance'. What a rush. Ova and out.

  1. Dreamer '95 (5:59)
  2. Junglist Days (4:54)
Review: Fresh from his adventures on US jungle label PPJ Recordings, Moscow's S Kid crash-lands into Amenology HQ with two ridiculous slabs of breaksmithery. 'Dreamer '95' is pure unfettered drummage with chops and cuts and glitches galore and some late entering pipes and a well known knife-playing vocal to sooth our edit-addled souls. 'Junglist Days' continues the tightly spliced and diced theme with heavier emphasis on the big splash cymbals and a sudden drop into pure rave bliss on the breakdown. Skid to halt for this.

Review: Seven years after he presented it to the world, Swedish don Seba finally serves up his second album Identity in vinyl form. A selection of the album's many highlights, delivered over three 12"s, each cut is brought to life once again; the stern truths about true creativity on 'Identity', the poignant hushed soul of Kirsty Hawkshaw on 'Nothing Can Replace', those oceanic breaks and soaring dynamics of the Headz-style 'Balance Of Power', the lithe acid funk of 'What's Your Fantasy', this list goes on. It's never too late to press an album to wax, this is proof.

  2. White Lightning (6:20)
Review: Back to 1994: Vinyl Fanatiks continue their heartfelt community service to ensure the foundation rave records are still alive and appreciated today. This time we head to the UK east coast to hear the sounds of three Moving Shadow affiliates - JMJ & Richie and engineer JT. As Spirits From An Urban Jungle they only released two records together, which was criminal considering how crisp and forward-thinking both EPs were... Especially now in their remastered form. 'Prologue To Freedom' blasts with hopeful chords and those classic detuned synth sounds while 'White Lightning' focuses much more on the breakbeat science. Yet another precision excavation from Brent Newitt's Vinyl Fanatiks mission.

Review: Two of the most successful artists to take drum & bass into the mainstream in the last 10 years; Sub Focus & Wilkinson could have so easily created a collection of big hands in the air bangers and satisfied a lot of fans. But instead they've taken things a little deeper and created an album that's more explorative and soft focus than you might expect. The main flavour is much a floatier, silky style that weaves between trancey sing-alongs such as 'Air I Breathe' to bigger clubbier cuts like 'Illuminate' by way of non-drum & bass adventures such as the twinkling Get Physical hip wriggles of 'Alone' and the Bicep-flexing cloud surfer 'Stratus'. Landing while clubs are still shutdown for the foreseeable, the timing of this is perfect.

  4. Mountain (Wait Here) (Bulu remix) (4:35)
Review: The title track from prolific producer TMSV's first EP for Bun The Grid, 'Ritalin Jam', is one of the most hard-to-describe cuts we've heard all year. Breathlessly energetic and prone to shapeshifting at seemingly random points during the track, it sees the Dutchman pepper a snappy, up-tempo beat with lo-fi electronic melodies, mind-bending acid lines and sub-bass so deep it should probably be measured in fathoms. AFruit's accompanying remix is, if anything, even more startling and forthright, with acid lines sharper than the average Sheffield steel knife blade. Over on the flip TMSV opts for some sludgy post-dubstep haziness via 'Mountain (Wait Here)', which Bulu in turn re-interprets as a skittish, experimental D&B mind-mangler.

Two big tunes from two very different ages both get serious treatment right here; label bosses Total Science give the parts to their 2003 bongo roller 'Lightweight' to the mighty maestro Break for some frankly ludicrous level-upping while on the flip we find Phaction's breakthrough track from 2017 'I Have You' getting rubbed up in all the right ways by men-of-the-moment Ill Truth. Maintaining the jazz and soul of the original while giving it a little extra 2020 beef, it's another superb remix execution. We expect nothing less from CIA.

Uncultured 002
Uncultured 002 (hand-stamped 10")
Cat: UNCULT 002. Rel: 28 Sep 20
  1. Track 1 (5:45)
  2. Track 2 (3:42)
Review: Following the anonymous debut earlier this summer, the mysterious Uncultured series continues with two more nods back to the rave roots. Side one takes on a 'Vamp' like tone with its cascading detuned synth stabs spiralling over rolling 140 breaks. Side two is a similarly familiar acid track but with a nudge in the tempo department and the vocal sample and breaks adding focus on the momentum. Pure rave juice.

Review: It's not so grim up north... Straight Up Breakbeat dig deep into the archives and tell the not-so-well known tale of Finland's long-standing, deep-running drum & bass scene. With roots that go right back to the mid-90s with the likes of Samuel & Nasley (who famously didn't release any of their material - until now), the Nordic country has consistently represented and these are the most important people who pushed it in those formative days; from the raw funk and disco feels of Dharma's 'Starts Up Above' to the gnarled mentasms and Headzy rush of Muffler's 'It's The Way' via the acid psychosis of longtime Loxy collaborator Resound's 'Ghetto Funk', it's a unique insight into one of drum & bass's most northern outposts.
