Things You Do For Love
Things You Do For Love (12" 再出版)
Cat: WB 007. Rel: 10 Jan 22
  1. Things You Do For Love (4:34)
  2. Things You Do For Love (Heartbeat mix) (2:44)
  3. Things You Do For Love (Mad Professor Crazy dubclubbing mix) (4:54)
  4. Things You Do For Love (Machine mix) (4:08)
Review: Second time around for Apiento's brilliant 'Things You Do For Love', a sunrise-ready chunk of slow house/Balearic soul fusion that's as dreamy and tactile as they come. It's certainly well worthy of the reissue treatment - copies of the 2019 seven-inch now change hands for significant amounts online - and this edition also boasts two new mixes. These include a masterclass in seductive, spaced-out, Balearic-minded ambient dub from Mad Professor (B1) and Apiento's own sparse, tough, house dub style 'Machine Mix'. Throw in both versions from the original release - including the ultra-dreamy, saucer-eyed 'Heartbeat Mix' - and you have an essential package.

I Remember Mama (feat NAD remix)
Cat: ERC 118. Rel: 19 Jan 22
  1. I Remember Mama (5:16)
  2. Sound Design (5:30)
  3. I Remember Mama (NAD Discomix) (11:01)
Review: "Emotional Rescue presents the first ever reissue of Sugar Minott's rare 12" of I Remember Mama. Recorded in Soho in mid-80s London, the Boogie meets Reggae song comes in vocal and instrumental mixes, as well as a wonderfully teasing long Discomix by NAD aka Dan Tyler (Idjut Boys).

Having grown up and become a star out of Kingston, JA, with over 50 albums and hundreds of singles for the likes of Studio One and Black Roots labels, the legendary vocalist was a pioneer of the Dancehall and then later Lovers Rock sounds.

Based in London for much of the 1980s, a chance meeting in the Wackies offices he met producer Steve Parr, who had recently opened the Sound Design Studio next door.

Hatching the idea to create a label to showcase their capabilities, Parr played all the instruments except the distinctive sax by friend Andy MacDonald, while Minott's delivery is at his prime, storytelling in the Jamaica tradition of hardship and praise.

Released on 7" and 12", they have striking differences. The "Sound Design" instrumental / version sees the studio team craft a disco meets reggae in a cod-style to wonderful, almost Balearic effect.

The collaboration with Dan Tyler continues, as he again works his desk dubbing magic. Extending and editing between the two mixes, teasing the instrumental before finally bringing the sax and vocals together for a 'discodub' finale. "

Back Together Again (hand-stamped 7" 再出版)
Cat: BNG 003. Rel: 14 Jan 22
  1. Back Together Again (feat Rachel Wallace - Rachel Wallace remix) (4:22)
  2. Back Dubbing Again (4:24)
Review: Bump 'n Grind Wax's latest limited edition is another juicy drop for those red hot summer days. It's a fine 7" from Mr Reggae Roast himself aka Adam Prescott who has been rolling out the tunes on Backative, Moonshine and 4Weed for a couple of years now. Rachel Wallace provides the super sweet and soulful vocal (as well as remixing) on this one which rolls like a laidback Tam Tam Club beat with sunny pads and tropical dub beats. On the flip is a dub that is beefed up with extra effects and heady twisting synth work.

  4. Sprayer ll
Review: Mr Cloudy has a sizable back catalogue on labels like Entropy, Dubwax and Millions Of Moments, and now he's been snapped up by Local Traffic to impart his sumptuous dubby wares across four tracks. "Memoria I" and "Memoria II" let the A-side simmer in a bubbling broth of dub techno ambience, all shimmering chords undergoing heavyweight processing. "Sprayer I" is still immensely mellow, although a little rhythmic pulse creeps its way into earshot via the movement of the gravelly chords, and then "Sprayer II" rounds the EP off with something approaching a beat-oriented excursion through the same billowing clouds of dub techno finery.

  7. Mystery Of Zambio (5:12)
Review: A relatively new duo consisting of Zurich musicians Schweizer and Shiller, Fuga Ronto's original music is the epitome of what new music heads know as 'balearic chuggers' - or 'bluggers', as we like to call them. With elements of synthfunk, dub and new wave, standouts from this sweat-glazed, beachside-worthy mini-album include 'Falling Star' and 'Wobble In The Pool', throwing all manner of domestic samples and adventure film quotes into the mix for good measure. Nailing fusions between song and film - resulting in the sonic equivalent to an exotic voodoo voyage - each track title reads like the name of a forgotten B-movie. Now you can snaffle up the first press of this slap-bassing, multilingual dance project on limited black vinyl.

Review: There are many labels who have been influential in terms of how the reggae world has evolved and unfolded over the years and Frontline is one of them. This superb double album reminds us why across 18 crucial cuts of dub. Included are a number of special alternative versions and new mixes that you might not have heard, and that have certainly never been on vinyl before. U-Roy, the vocalist who pioneered the vocal style known as toasting, features a few times, as do the silky sounds of Keith Hudson, buttery vocals of Gregory Isaacs and legendary Johnny Clarke.

For The Love Of Money
Cat: MRB 7133. Rel: 31 Jan 18
  1. For The Love Of Money (4:05)
  2. For The Love Of Money (disco dub) (4:14)
Review: Disco Dub Band's "For The Love of Money", a one-off collaboration between producer Davitt Sigerson and reggae musician Mike Dorane, has long been considered something of a classic by those who like their disco to come with a big dose of dub-wise flavour. Here the instrumental O'Jays cover, which originally appeared on the Movers label in 1976, is given the remix treatment by long-time fans Mr Bongo. The superb A-side, in which Dorane's instrumental talents take centre stage, naturally comes accompanied by the frequently played Dub interpretation, a typically wild and bass-heavy affair that sounds like it was mixed "live" in one take in true Lee Perry/King Tubby style. If it's not already in your collection, it should be.

  3. Natty Roots (Paolo Baldini remix - version 2) (4:15)
Review: Pressure Sounds come through with a super 10" here with Natty Roots Controller mixed three different ways by Paolo Baldini. It is a Barry Brown original and the first remix is one with models of echo and reverb, plenty of knob twisting and heavily affected hi-hats and a rolling rhythm. Version 1 of the remix is heavier and more upright, with just as much bass weight, then the second version is lit up with some sci-fi effects. All three are delicious dubs for those who like it heady.

  1. Summer Madness (3:19)
  2. Use Me (3:39)
Review: Stix Records is the sub-label of superb French outlet Favorite Recordings, and it is reserved for heavy dub cuts. This one finds label regular Mato reworking a classic reggae roller first written by Kool & The Gang. His gorgeous version is perfect for hot summer nights with its languid Fender Rhodes leads and sun kissed beats. It's loved up and perfectly, frankly. On the flip is a reggae rework of Bill Withers', who is sadly no long with us, 'Use Me,' repackaged with a playful harmonica lead and more grinding chords over the gently tumbling beats.

  1. Same Old Same Old (3:11)
  2. Drop The Bass (3:12)
Review: Emapea has put a number of highly collectible beats over the years and now the Polish master is back with some more on his home label Cold Busted. He switches up the style a little here though and goes for a couple of crucial dubs and phat riddims. his is music for smoking and zoning out to, with a global dance hall vibe run through with toasting vocals and echoing perc. Perfect for big sound systems even though vibe is introspective and heady, these are powerful skankers for all to enjoy. For our mom, the heavier, deeper, more sun kissed flip side 'Drop The Bass' is the real winner.

Review: Since the release of the dub techno-fired Perspectives album in May 2020, Konstantinos Soublis AKA Fkuxion has concentrated on creating "more intimate work" that draws more heavily on his own emotional state of mind during the production process. As a result, Parallel Moves is even more atmospheric than his previous output - and that's saying something - with subtle shifts in style and tone throughout. Sure, it's still rooted in dub techno and ambient dub, but also utilises modified and manipulated jazz instrumentation, deep post-dubstep rhythms, synth-sporting deep techno and deep house grooves, and pitched-down beatdown style beats laden with classic downtempo sounds. As musical evolutions go, it's undeniably impressive.

Th pioneering studio technician lay it down in 1983 for Jet Star with acclaimed session musicians such as Sly & Robbie, Noel 'Skully' Simms, Uziah 'Sticky' Thompson, Earl 'Chinna' Smith and Willie Lindo. Packed with spaceship sounds, popping hits and oodles of echo and fever it is an earthy dub collection with lo-fi guitars and heady leads that sound track any smoke session to perfection. Original copies are pricey on second hand markets so don't sleep on this vital reissue.

Viaje En Dub
Cat: JMANSP 001. Rel: 30 Sep 21
  1. Viaje En Dub (4:20)
  2. Viaje En Dub (instrumental) (4:15)
Review: For the latest volume in their Special Products series, Jazzman has decided to deliver a first ever vinyl pressing of Danay Suarez's 'Viaje En Dub', a 2019 cut best known for featuring on the soundtrack to the Need For Speed: Heat video game. Making it available to vinyl overs is a great idea because it's undoubtedly one of the Cuban singer's most evocative and alluring cuts to date. Suarez is naturally the headline attraction, delivering a sweet and sultry Spanish lead vocal (and, seemingly, the backing vocals too) whose delay-laden production is a neat fit for the languid, dub-wise digital reggae backing that sits beneath. There's also a chance to enjoy the track without her vocals on the flip, via an even more dub-fired Instrumental Mix that has previously never been released.

Review: Former Public Image Ltd. bassist and later ambient dub artist Jah Wobble returns to an old sound and project for this fun little dub rerub. Metal Box, the PiL album that yielded him much of the lasting praise that he has garnered since 1979, now sees a complete reinvention in 'dub', with Wobble metamorphosing the meaning of the word, and delivering his own take on the rude steppers' sound. Most of the remixes - 'Memories' and 'The Suit' being prime examples - occur in double the drummed time than we are used to with most dub, but as much should be expected from a post-punker. Blaring hard rock solos and lavish synth interludes adorn this LP, all while Wobble's original bass licks against the front and centre of the mix, and only short filterings of each original song's lyrics appear before echoing out. Deserving of its metallic silver vinyl pressing, this is a stunning revisit.

Review: The hard-digging record fiends at Kalita are back with more brilliance. This one is the first-ever retrospective of work by Jamaican-born artist Desmond Chambers. The first tine is a proudly politically aware tune previously only avialbel on his 1987 album Tiger Born, while the single 'The Morning Show' has before now only been available as the B side of little known single 'I Have Seen Love In Your Eyes.' The two other tracks are mega cult, hugely loved acid-infused dub snakers with boogie-infused rhythms. Original copies will cost you a huge amount so make sure you snap this one up asap.

Review: First released in the UK by Tottenham-based Atra Records in 1974, The Black Breast Has Produced Her Best Flesh of My Skin Blood By Blood has long been considered one of the edgiest roots albums of the period and a must-have for serious reggae collectors. The album resulted in its creator, the sadly departed Keith Hudson, being dubbed "the dark prince of reggae". Listening back to this welcome reissue, it's easy to see why. For starters, the lyrical content is highly politically charged and righteous, while Hudson's weighty musical arrangements are far more trippy, hazy and dimly lit than those found on most roots reggae records of the period. This edition also includes three additional tracks not found on the original release, plus exhaustive sleeve notes from Hudson biographer Vincent Ellis.

Review: Served up in a nice Pressure Sounds house bag is this killer 10" from the one and only Lee "Scratch" Perry in cahoots with Diggory Kenrick. The rhythm is Junior Byles' "Long Way" and here it gets four reworks. Each of them hazy, deep, dubby and cavernous to sink right into. Perry's musings are subtle and drift in and out of ear shot, as does a curious flute and some rather festive tambourines. Things grow more tripped out across the four tracks, with the last cut the most psyched-out of the lot.

  15. African Head Charge - "Hold Some" (version) (3:33)
  16. Dub Syndicate - "Early Mafia" (4:43)
Review: The second volume of the Sherwood At The Controls compilation series focuses on Adrian Sherwood productions recorded and released between 1985 and 1990. Predictably, it's another fine set, once again showcasing the On U-Sound chief's ability to fuse his love of dub sounds and production with all manner of (then) contemporary dancefloor sounds. Highlights come thick and fast, from the trippy Balearic Afro-funk of the Unknown Cases' "Masimbabele '89" and rock-rap growl of The Beatings' "Television", to the uncomplicated, sax-laden sweetness of Lee 'Scratch' Perry's "Music & Science Mafia", and Pankow's deliciously fuzzy cover of Prince's "Girls & Boys". Throw in a couple of typically weighty Dub Mafia tracks, and you have another essential retrospective.

Black Rabbit
Black Rabbit (limited 7")
Cat: EVER 112. Rel: 22 Sep 20
  1. Black Rabbit (feat Shniece McMenamin) (3:46)
  2. Black Rabbit (dub) (3:43)
Review: Shniece has become a key collaborator of Prince Fatty's having made such a fine impression when she guested on his 'In The Viper's Shadow' album last year. This new hook up is a winding journey that opens with some truly mind bending and psyched out 60s sounds riding on a trippy dub, and littered with samples from a public service broadcast on drugs. It's somehow a dark yet euphoric dub with a killer backbeat and futuristic edge A dub version peels things back to the drum work and lets the magic of this fine partnership shine.

Tom's By Two
Cat: RREP 08. Rel: 23 Sep 21
  1. Tom's By 2 (10:30)
  2. UniFi (Slab Creek version) (7:45)
Review: Elite Beat is an Oregon sextet who are on a mission to dub the world. And they're doing a fine job of it too, with this new 12" featuring two more killer cuts. 'Tom's By 2' is a dreamy vibe with mystic and psychedelic sax leads that drift off into the cosmos. The tumbling drums roll along nice and steady and keep you locked in this most Iive-sounding of jams. It's warming body music at an inviting tempo but the vibe switches on the flip side. A slower, more inward looking sound resides in the plump dub drums. Sub-bass and swirling drums flesh it out to perfection.

Cat: PRTL 10023WL. Rel: 06 Oct 21
  1. Shuruaat Aur Ant (4:56)
  2. The Beginning & The End (4:29)
Review: Alpha & Omega (who have album coming on Steppas) are an ever reliable duo that come on strong here with a limited edition 10" on Partial Records. 'Shuruaat Aur Ant' is a richly layered and deftly detailed modern dub cut. The steel plated drums and wub-wub bass set a firmly rooted groove, while all manner of intimating but subtle leads and vamping chords, tinkling tambourines and alluring vocals help to hypnotise. The flip side is a stripped back version, 'The Beginning & The End,' which is a more heady, empty cut.

  2. Dubolution - "Dub Garden" (4:23)
  3. Indica Dubs - "Garden Dubplate Mix" (feat Indica dubs) (3:44)
  4. Indica Dubs - "Raw Dub Mix" (feat Indica dubs) (3:45)
Review: Over the last four years, Idren Natural's Dubolution-produced 'Jah Garden' - a steppers-powered roots/digi-dub fusion cut featuring a superb lead vocal - has been a dubplate special in Inidica Dubs' DJ sets. It's fitting then that they've finally decided to release it on their own label, with the killer original mix being joined by a trio of tasty dubs. Dubolution's own dub-style version is faithfully weighty and skeletal, while wisely emphasizing his own jazzy guitar licks, while Indica Dubs' flipside revisions are equally as potent. The 'Garden Dubplate Mix' is a punchy, full-throttle dancefloor dub workout, while the 'Raw Dub Mix' sounds like one of Mad Professor's wilder, heavier offerings.

Review: Iration Steppas are Monte cold dub legends from the North of England. They have been there since day dot and are still at the heart father scene. This EP shows why they are so well-loved as it is a long-awaited re-release of one of the group's five vital UK dub cuts that blew up and revolutionised the scene back in the 90s when they were first put out. Each one comes on its own 12" and has been freshly remastered for the occasion. 'Reminiscence' is an earth-shattering jam with fresh flute leads and clean digi-dub production over some heavy bass.

Cat: IRON 01107. Rel: 16 Sep 20
  1. My Homeland (3:39)
  2. My Homeland (dub) (3:29)
Review: Alvin Davis is a musical polymath. He has worked in the worlds of jazz, reggae and soul with a slew of well known names such as Prince, Edwin Starr, Maxi Priest and David Hinds. This super limited 7" offers up a great horn and sax lead instrumental piece with Alvin's horns leading the charge. The mood is one of casual rejoice and subtle celebration - the hits in particular are a lovely hook that keep you locked. On the flipside, things get dread fuelled and deliciously dubby thanks to a rework from Alien Dread.
