Wrong Way

Amami - "Wrong Way" (3:36)
Amami & Vibronics - "Wrong Way Dub" (3:15)
Review: Amami's 'Wrong Way' is a dub-infused track that exemplifies the genre's rich, immersive qualities. The song opens with a deep, resonant bassline that anchors the composition, while subtle percussion elements add a rhythmic complexity. The dub version on the B-side further enhances the track's atmospheric depth, offering a more stripped-back interpretation that allows the intricate soundscapes to emerge more prominently. The release underscores Amami's adeptness at blending traditional dub elements with contemporary production techniques, resulting in a track that is both rooted in the genre's history and forward-thinking in its execution.

Blue Bells - "Come Along" (3:09)
The Upsetter - "Along Came A Dub" (2:55)
Review: A slept-on roots gem from the mid-70s gets a timely reissue, perfect for warming up those cold winter days. Originally produced by Hector Wright at Lee "Scratch" Perry's legendary Black Ark Studios, this timeless piece showcases the vocal harmonies of The Blue Bells. A-side 'Come Along' features a captivating blend of soulful vocals and uplifting melodies, while the flipside offers a dubwise reimagining, stripping back the arrangement to reveal its hypnotic depths. Originally released in 1976, this repress makes a rare gem accessible once more.

Change Your Ways

Cornell Campbell - "Change Your Ways" (3:20)
Yakka - "Change That Dub" (3:20)
Review: Poor Man's Friend Records has assembled a tasty new 7" featuring reggae legend Cornell Campbell. With a career spanning over 60 years, Campbell is known for his distinctive falsetto and both heartfelt love songs and deep spiritual roots music. His latest track again delivers a powerful message against judgment and ego: "Just try sweeping up your backyard, before you find fault with people's yard," he sings, quite rightly. Produced in a classic mid-70s roots style and recorded by the Poor Man's Friend Rhythm Section in Bristol, this one comes with a fine dub version by Yakka and horn arrangements by the Cornerstone Horn Section.

Shaky Girl (3:23)
Review: Tabou 1 is on a roll right now and their latest offering features reggae icon Johnny Clarke teaming up with the legendary rhythm duo Sly & Robbie. 'Every Knee' is an archetypal roots reggae anthem that has everything you want in a tune. It demands to be played loud and proud and blends Clarke's soulful, spiritual vocals with Sly & Robbie's masterful bass and drum foundation. The rest of the tracks here also have deep grooves and heartfelt lyrics that resonate with themes of devotion and unity and are enhanced by the signature dub-infused production.

Too Much Pressure (14:44)
Double Bubble (8:02)
Ratlle The Roof Down (7:08)
Review: Deadbeat, the Montreal-based dub techno maestro, returns to Echocord with a trio of immersive and hypnotic tracks. 'Pressure Double Down' showcases Deadbeat's signature sound, a blend of dub-infused techno and minimal aesthetics that has captivated listeners for over two decades. 'Too Much Pressure' is a 15-minute odyssey through intricate percussion, dubbed-out stabs and psychedelic vocals, its subtly unfurling layers and nuanced dynamism creating a captivating sonic experience. 'Double Bubble' follows with a delicate interplay of chord melodies, sub-bass tones and a crunchy analogue rhythm section, its hypnotic groove drawing the listener into a world of sonic exploration. 'Rattle The Roof Down' closes out the EP with a heavy dose of dub reggae bass, its spacey delays and murky swells adding a layer of hypnotic depth.

Review: DJ TRON's latest release offers a vibrant fusion of funk, hip-hop and dub influences. The A-side, 'Jamaican Champ,' delivers a dancefloor-ready groove with expertly crafted sampling that maintains high energy throughout. The B-side, 'Spice Girl,' features a fantastic horn section and an irresistible rhythm, making it a strong party anthem that captures the essence of classic ska while adding a fresh twist. Track 1 (3:30)
Track 2 (3:32)
Track 3 (3:31)
Track 4 (3:27)
Review: Sao Paulo's Junior Dread brings his world reggae excellence to this latest gem from Red Peak Sound. The collaboration began when J.Brenner met Junior at Minneapolis' Word Sound Power Festival back in 2022 and soon after they began making music and it led to two powerful tracks act were finely crafted through extensive mixing and testing. On the A-side here is a slow, heavy stepper evoking a vision of resilience atop Babylon's heart, paired with a dubwise mix that strips the rhythm to its core. The B-side offers a meditative one-drop rhythm and uplifting lyrics and is also accompanied by a swirling dub version that transcends space and time.

I Predict A Riot (Manasseh dub mix)
Review: 21st Century steppers Dub Pistols present their nextmost radical step forward, in the form of a biohazardous 7" re-rubbing 'I Predict A Riot' by English indie rock Kaiser Chiefs. With the dub foursome alleging that they used to play the song during soundchecks "for a bit of fun", the group have now come together, finally, for a shocking dub rendition after it especially popped off pre-show at the Mucky Weekender festival. The gang also welcome neo-dub producer Nick Manasseh for a wickedly weighty version on the B.

Blue Monday
Blue Monday (Guadi Stepper dub mix)
Review: One of many new dub renditions of classic pop songs by contemporary four-piece collective Dub Pistols, this 7" version of New Order's 'Blue Monday', the best-selling song of all time, again emerges from Mary Jane mists as a floaty memory of the era-defining song. First released in 2021 via Cyclone Records, this reissue recalls the fact that Dub Pistols consider the third Monday of every January to be 'Blue Monday'. The liner notes say: "this is the time of year when we're all cold, broke and riddled with guilt that our New Year's resolutions to get fit, drink less alcohol, and be a better human being have fallen by the wayside." The Dubmatix remix is no less effervescent, but comes backed by warlike horns. Again, all proceeds for this record go to the charity Tonic Music for Mental Health.

Empress Ahavah - "Merkaba" (3:24)
T Gibbs - "Merkaba" (version) (3:23)
Review: Dutch label Fontoyard is back and doing what it does best early in this new year, and that is serving up fresh rhythms from some of reggae's best talents. This one is the sound of T Gibbs in collaboration with Empress Ahavah who is responsible for writing the original tune. It is a superb stepping riddim that is perfectly driven by a heavy bassline. Up top, like all the most crucial dub, is a mystical melody that captivates the imagination, and some silky smooth vocals. Flip it over and T Gibbs offers up a nice and tasteful dub that dials things back to the inviting low end.

Ras Always (feat Chazbo - version) (8:34)
Ras Always (feat dub Creator - version) (7:48)
Review: If you like your reggae with a driving digital edge and hints of dancehall in the synths then this one is going to get you hot under the collar. It's a collaboration between Lutan Fyah and McPullish with Chazbo, the featured guest on 'Ras Always.' The drums are doused in tons of echo, there is a trad melody line snaking its way through the bright synths and a vocal musing that brings the island vibes. The version is another almost eight-minute trip that is much more earthy and organic so harks back to early reggae originals.

Danskness (Hurra Hurra mix) (2:59)
Noovijmbre (part 2) (3:53)
Review: The mission-statement-and-artist-name Gabber Dub Project, from Germany, take on a bold undertaking. Doing exactly what is said on the tin, this six track explosion dispatches every possible topological contortion of what could be meant by "gabber dub", traversing transient styles from UK hardcore and hardstyle in the process. LXC, Zimmertime and Hurra Hurra offer terrifyingly shouty, jackhammering remixes checking off moods of militancy and warmongery, with 'Dubbersaet' sounding especially propagandistic, described as a "maximum amen workout", shortly before side B both hastens the pace and buries the vibe in shockingly six-foot-deep soil.

Groove Dub (3:39)
Groove 78 Style (3:40)
Review: Vin Gordon, also known as Don Drummond Jr, is a celebrated trombonist from Jamaica who now drops a second 12" on Finnish Dub & Sound International with the Dubsetters. It carries on the good work of their first outing with rootsy and organic reggae rhythms topped with the signature smooth sounds of Gordon's melodies up top. After the original version of 'Get On The Groove', the B-side keeps things sweet with a Groove Dub that is as deep as they come and stacked with echo and reverb for that lovely authentic sound and then closing it out is 'Groove 78 Style' which is more percussive, splashy and cavernous with some deft studio effects added in.

Marcus Tradition (version) (3:37)
Review: Jamwax breathes new life into a rare and evocative track from Justin Hinds, a heavyweight roots reggae masterpiece that embodies the spirit and teachings of Marcus Garvey. A-side 'Marcus Tradition" delivers a powerful message of tradition and heritage, driven by a down-tempo riddim and distinctive whistle. The flipside offers a dubwise reimagining, stripping back the vocals to reveal the hypnotic depths of the instrumental arrangement. This reissue is a testament to Jamwax's dedication to preserving Jamaican musical heritage, honouring both Hinds' artistry and Garvey's enduring legacy. A must-have for any roots reggae enthusiast or those seeking to connect with the powerful message of Marcus Garvey.

Roots Defender Riddim Section - "Dub Dem Down" (4:19)
Review: Jah Mason and Kojo Neatness bring an authentic island flavour to this solid 4/4 roots rhythm that was crafted by the Roots Defender Riddim Section. The track features soulful horn arrangements as well as mesmerising guitars and keys by Black Steele and Maestro Inyaki. Originally recorded as a full band piece in Brixton over a decade ago, it underwent multiple stages to perfect its organic vibe for sound system heads. The multitrack was then taken to Ital Soup studio in South London where Petah Sunday served up a brilliant analogue mix while also adding some mind-blowing dubs all of which have already made their mark.

The Jamaicans - "Peace & Love" (2:41)
Errol Brown - "Many Questions" (2:26)
Review: This 1968 rocksteady classic by The Jamaicans is a rare gem from Duke Reid's Treasure Isle archives. It now finally sees the light of day once more and centres the smooth harmonies and uplifting melodies which define this timeless track and capture the golden era of Jamaican music. On the flip side, Errol Brown's mid-70s rendition of 'Many Questions' is just as good. It delivers a deep, soulful take with his signature production finesse making it another worthy addition to your box of red-hot reggae 7"s.

Sons Of Slaves (reissue)
Cat: UPS 014. Rel: 27 Jan 25
Junior Delgado - "Sons Of Slaves" (3:37)
The Upsetter - "Sons Of Dub" (3:29)
Review: Having a cut a record as early as 16 years old, Junior's talents were identified quickly and he went on to be a prolific roots rockers vocalist with a busy career through the 70s and 80s. One of those who heard and recorded him then was Lee "Scratch" Perry and this record was one of their collaborative standouts, pairing a driving rhythm with a powerful, catchy lead vocal and uplifting background harmonies all elevated by the unmistakable warmth of the Black Ark studio's production. It's a timeless piece of classic reggae, making it instantly memorable and irresistibly singable. Side-2 transforms the track into a dub showcase. Layers of echo, reverb and vocal snippets create a spacious, hypnotic atmosphere, with the rhythm section taking the lead. The interplay between the faintly retained chorus and effects adds depth while maintaining the song's original spirit. This reissue highlights the enduring appeal of both the original roots cut and its dub reinterpretation.

Junior Mervin - "Cross Over" (3:37)
Upsetters - "Cross Over" (dub) (3:31)
Review: Featuring Mervin's unmistakable falsetto delivers an anti-war message over a lush dub-infused backdrop, radiating hope and defiance. The track's atmospheric depth, blending melodic elements with rhythmic precision, is pure brilliance. On Side-2, the Upsetters' version reimagines the song, allowing Perry's dub wizardry to shine. Stripping back vocals and emphasising the instrumental layers, the dub version highlights hypnotic basslines, echo-laden effects, and a more prominent groove. The interplay between restraint and innovation transforms the track into a meditative dub experience. Junior Mervin's Cross Over 7" is a roots gem steeped in the signature magic of Lee "Scratch" Perry. With a message as powerful as its production, you've got the true recipe for a classic.

Meditation Dubplate (mix 2) (3:28)
Review: Originally released on a Partial 10" in 2019, 'Mediation' became a staple in the underground roots and dub sound system scene and got heavy plays from the late Jah Shaka and others. This 12" includes the original vocal and dub versions along with two previously unreleased dubplate cuts. Eva Keyes, a rising artist from Limerick, Ireland, brings a distinctive and powerful voice, reminiscent of Sinead O'Connor and Dolores O'Riordan. This one has deep roots but offers a fresh take on classic sounds.

We Can Make It Work
Cat: PLA 06. Rel: 03 Feb 25
We Can Make It Work (4:02)
We Can Make It (dub) (3:14)
Review: Jennifer Lara delivered a rather oblique reggae record in the form of 'We Can Make It Work' in 1980 for Uptempo Records, who've today repressed and redelivered it to fresh ears. The Studio One maverick was a mammoth 7" releaser, but few of her records fell happily afoul of the flukily muted vocals heard on this one, which sound to serve Lara's voice in the manner of a wooing, gothic castle-haunting ghost. The subject matter of resuscitating a lost romantic cause helps in this regard: with offbeat bass bubbles and pitch-warped chords, the whole track feels haunted but still jocular, as if the singer-subject remains fixated on something largely dead, but still, on the off chance, revivable.

Bebe Durmiendo Cumbia (3:54)
Bebe Durmiendo Cumbia (dub) (3:57)
Review: Latin Cumbia is one of the most lauded dance music genres of the 2020s so far, having been subject to many an electronic and club reinterpretation in recent times, after decades of obscurity since its origin in 70s South America. But what happens when its jerking rhythms are heard intermixed with dub reggae? Elijah Minnelli, with his unbeatable brand of bread-indued kookery, implies his possession of the answer, with a firebrand new EP on 7" yellow vinyl. 'Bebe Durmiendo Cumbia' ('Sleeping Baby Cumbia') is a somnolent take on the dragging, hemiola-laden sound by the producer, representing the neotenous infancy of the genre as it enjoys continued residence in the UK. The cumbia version is a wailingly minimal slumber, while the B-side represents a more traditional, psychedelicized live dub take, performed entirely by Elijah himself.

There is just enough reverence for the traditional sounds here to make them feel utterly authentic while also looking to the future and subtle new variations on the foundations. With a powerful lyrical delivery and reggae roots style, Ranking Joe sets the tone with his smooth yet commanding presence and the dub version of the track is a signature display of Dub Creator's skill with heavy basslines and echoing effects. Teddy Dan adds his touch with his deep, soulful voice and conscious lyrics and more dub goodness seals the deal.
