  9. Goodbye Dub (2:08)
Review: A Rocket In Dub returns to Krachladen Records in the same month that he appears on a split 12" with Graph. This time he has put together four 7"s that explore his famously dubby, minimal sound. Each cut is a precise experiment in sound, with icy hits and liquid chords washing over you while various different dub moods percolate below. There are incidental jams that encourage your mind to wander, then more dense and intense cuts of late night menace. It is another accomplished work in the catalogue of a dub technician who has been on top of his game for years.

Hiss (limited 7" in screen-printed sleeve)
Cat: ZAMZAM 80. Rel: 05 Oct 20
  1. Hiss (4:18)
  2. Palms (4:10)
Review: ZAMZAM goes bang bang once again as the dutty dubstep label hits release number 80. Cause keeps it utterly filthy on the a-side with 'Hiss,' a heavyweight nobler with a menacing bassline that's so fat it wiggles as it walks. Crashing hits and sci-fi synth motifs make this a most astral crawler. 'Palms' has whirring synths and a bassline curried oceans below. Freaky vocal sounds are haunting and dark and add tension to the track as it prowls along through an utter wasteland. Atmospheric stuff, to be sure.

Sky Is The Limit
Cat: SG 007002. Rel: 20 Oct 20
  1. Sky Is The Limit (3:45)
  2. Sky Is The Limit (version) (3:45)
Review: Sagete is an Italian roots label making moves and now keeps rolling with a second real, this time from Daddy Freddy on tidy 7". His aggy vocal delivery makes for a real jump up beat, with angst ridden rhymes over roots dancehall beats. It feels utterly contemporary with the pixel perfect bass and laser-like synths firing over the face of the track. As energetic and confrontational as that one is, the dub workout on the flip is no less raw and visceral, with the production really getting your attention from the off.

  2. My Homeland (dub) (3:29)
Review: Alvin Davis is a musical polymath. He has worked in the worlds of jazz, reggae and soul with a slew of well known names such as Prince, Edwin Starr, Maxi Priest and David Hinds. This super limited 7" offers up a great horn and sax lead instrumental piece with Alvin's horns leading the charge. The mood is one of casual rejoice and subtle celebration - the hits in particular are a lovely hook that keep you locked. On the flipside, things get dread fuelled and deliciously dubby thanks to a rework from Alien Dread.

Cat: HUNT 002. Rel: 21 Oct 20
  1. Dixie Peach - "Never Give Up Jah" (3:53)
  2. Dub Hunters - "Never Give Up Jah" (Melodica version) (3:53)
Review: The second release on the fledgling Dub Hunters label finds the eponymous artistic duo of Marco Marastoni and Michele Iemmi link up with Dixie Peach. All instruments except the horns and kete drum were played by Dub Hunters themselves, and the pair also mixed it at Landscape Studio, so you get a fulsome Dub Hunters experience for this one for sure. It's fine mix of tradition and futurism, history and invention with nice congas, natty riffs and wobbling bass and drum combos. A lush harmonica version on the flip seals the deal.

  5. A Rocket In Dub - "Lion Night" (1:51)
Review: True to their usual form, Krachladen Records serve ups big release that is split between Dusseldorf IDM masters Graph aka Stefan Jurke & Jens Beyer and A Rocket In Dub. This is the first in what is promised to be a new series that pops up a few times a year. Graph's 'Gowc Gowac' is a deadly dub with plenty of sci-fi motifs that help add to a feeling of revelation despite the heavy bass. 'Kon Konwac' is all whirring sounds, clacking hits and looped sonic freakiness that keeps you guessing. The three cuts from A Rocket In Dub all offer atmospheric dub with otherworldly found sounds that have you gazing on in awe.

  1. The Illuminated - "Revolution" (feat Vale) (4:52)
  2. Blind Prophet - "Hugh Dub" (The Illuminated remix) (4:10)
Review: Dutch duo The Illuminated finally make their debut on Rotterdam based label Dub Communication. Vale's expressive and conversational horns appear on a-side, with swaggering, stuttering dub production down low making for a futuristic feeling. The crisp hits ride up top, the chords hang in the air, and it's a lovely place to be. The reverse rework is of a signature sound from Blind Prophet which was originally put out on DUBCOM003V. All in all this is a heavyweight 120bpm dubplate stepper that really brings the dub heat to any dance floor.

  4. Indica Dubs & Conscious Sounds - "Dub In Zion" (3:38)
Review: There's much to set the pulse racing on Indica Sounds' latest ten-inch, not least a first label appearance for rising star Eva Keyes, whose previous releases on Partial Records were all nigh on essential. 'A Place Called Home' is another brilliant soul-fired digital reggae excursion from the singer, with her trademark vocal lilt sounding more haunting than ever. Indica Dubs and Conscious Sounds make the most of selected vocal snippets on their accompanying dub mix, which naturally boasts tougher production and even weighty bass. Melodica maestro Chazbo gets to chance to do his thing over the same riddim on the flip ('Zion Is Home'), before Indica Dubs and Conscious Sounds successfully turn his take into a heavy steppers style workout ('Dub in Zion').

  3. Bambaman - "Training Day" (3:51)
  4. Bambaman - "Training Dub" (3:55)
Review: This fantastic inaugural EP on Dende Sound finds the crew work together with MC Trooper for the first time. His red hot lyrical fire torches Bambaman's powerful riddims and aches to be played cloud on a serious sound system. The collaboration came together during many late night sessions in Brighton and has a positive, uplifting vibe of the sort we all need right now. The flip finds Bambaman serving up a more serious and militant dub style with plenty of echoes of classic melodica roots. 'Training Day' then rounds out the package with some future classic sounds in both original and dub format.

Review: Rough Signal Records have finally snapped up a man who has released many big tunes, most of which get heavy support from the famous King Shiloh sound system amongst many others. Mighty Profit is a big producer with a big sound and he hails from Italy, which is in something of a dub sweet spot right now. This tune is a special collaboration work from Rough Signal Records JPN and fuses his exclusive synth with Dub Kazman's signature bass line, some sick drums and percussion. The tune takes its name from the tumultuous times in which we find ourselves and sure provides some respite.

  1. Payoh Soulrebel - "Selfish World" (From Valmeria Roots Vol 1) (3:18)
  2. Paupa Man - "Ya Se" (From Valmeria Roots Vol 1) (3:43)
Review: Producer and One By One Records founder Baay Selectah continues to mine the Valmeria Roots digital mix-tapes he created some years back with regular studio partner (and suitably soulful vocalist) Payoh SoulRebel. The two tracks showcased here are taken from 2013's Valmeria Roots Volume 1 and are based on a repurposed (and presumably re-recorded) classic roots reggae riddim. Payoh SoulRebel handles lead vocals on 'Selfish World', musing about selfishness in society over a warm, head-nodding groove. Fellow crew-member Mr Papua handles vocal duties on the flip, singing sweetly in Spanish over the very same much-loved riddim.

Cat: EVER 112. Rel: 22 Sep 20
  1. Black Rabbit (feat Shniece McMenamin) (3:46)
  2. Black Rabbit (dub) (3:43)
Review: Shniece has become a key collaborator of Prince Fatty's having made such a fine impression when she guested on his 'In The Viper's Shadow' album last year. This new hook up is a winding journey that opens with some truly mind bending and psyched out 60s sounds riding on a trippy dub, and littered with samples from a public service broadcast on drugs. It's somehow a dark yet euphoric dub with a killer backbeat and futuristic edge A dub version peels things back to the drum work and lets the magic of this fine partnership shine.

UV Dub (7")
Cat: MYSTB 003. Rel: 13 Oct 20
  1. Points (4:20)
  2. UV Dub (4:56)
Review: The Mystery Booms crew have put together a limited run of what they call 'modern weird rhythms' from the Prince Stoner. 'Points' is filled with intrigue - its stuttering drums and bass lurching from one point to the next while heavily treated vocals appear and disappear like ghostly apparitions in the dark. It's warm and inviting but unsettling at the same time. On the flip, 'UV Dub' has a killer bassline waaaay down low, then icy hi hats up top and is all finished off with warped, mind melting pads. These are two fresh, killer beats for sure, however you want to categorise them.

Review: Italian label Bababoom serve up this brand new and essential roots 12" featuring vocalist and musician Ramon Judah, Roots Defender Horns and Dub Defender. It kicks off with 'Freedom Chant', a pained vocal riding over prickly dub beats that open mind and heart. 'Horns Of Freedom' then repurposes the groove and layers up some sultry trumpets to bring a different mood. 'Freedom Rock' then takes the tune into a lovers rock world with earthy and organic guitar plucking and 'Dub For Freedom' is the nice rolling closer, with fat drums and flabby bass inviting you in deep.

Review: The cuts on this 7" are the stuff of legend. It is said they have been out of circulation for 25 years after having first popped up on a white label 12" in the mid-90s. It features two takes on 'Dub of Independence' backed with the majestic 'Paranormal Dubwise' which lifts its catchy hook from a popular 90's sci-fi TV show. All of the cuts are clean and futuristic, with shiny and reflective drums offset by more earthy bass. Warped leads and twisted melodies add another layer of intrigue to these most original of dubs.

  1. Anthony Simba - "Rise Again" (3:50)
  2. Mixman - "Rise Again I-Sion" (Mixman dub Section) (3:43)
Review: Of late, Blakamix boss Dennis 'Mixman' Bedeau has offered up a number of reissues of killer cuts from his extensive back catalogue. He's at it again here too, delivering a re-press of his 2012 production for Anthony Simba, 'Rise Again'. The A-side original version is a typical digi-reggae excursion, with Simba singing sweetly and soulfully over crunchy machine drums, colourful synthesizer lines and, most surprisingly, 80s style Fairlight sampler orchestral stabs (as used in thousands of synth-pop records over the years). Bedeau strips out most of Simba's vocal on flipside workout 'Rise Again I-Son', a near perfect digi-dub excursion that's not only weighty and delay-laden, but also makes use of some deeper and hazier synthesizer sounds.

Review: The Truesounds crew is a creative collective of artists and producers who are bringing their own perspectives and flavours to rootsy music. Here they offer up 'This Life (Feel Better Riddim) (feat Jah Mason)' and it is a slow motion riddim with Jah Mason in fine form delivering his odes up top. Wooden hits and bottomless kicks are the order of the day for the groove, which is never less than pillowy and perfect. There is of course and more ticked up and tripped out dub on the flip, 'Feel Better Riddim.'

It's an album that fuses digital reggae sounds with rub-a-dub rhythms and while sounding utterly fresh it also comes riddled with a sense of 80s authenticity. The vocal refrains are catchy and pithy, the verses deliver forceful lyrics and flourishes of rocksteady with notorious singer Payoh SoulRebel. Tenor Mario also debuts in an unusual role as lead vocalist and serves up a message of love between men and women. John Vanilla is the man behind the artwork, making this an even more vital offering.

Review: The legendary Iration Steppas reissue their second studio album Dubz From De Higher Regionz which is originally from 2004. Active for a quarter of a century now, the Leeds institutions pioneered a digital dub sound that transitioned the scene out of the militant jah stepper period into the future. This album perfectly embodies that with its sleek drums and contemporary studio effects, clean bass sounds and sheet metal hits. Plenty of hefty dubs make it a timeless collection and the inlay includes full discography and liner notes.

Review: Back in 2016, Jah Wobble offered up a two-disc trawl through the more dub-fired corners of his vast back catalogue, In Dub. While that set included dub tracks and self-made reworks that spanned the whole of his then 40-year career, this belated sequel concentrates on material made since 1990. As you'd expect given Wobble's track record, there's little straight-up dub reggae present, but rather a ton of hazy, delay-laden musical fusions that mix and match elements of ambient, electronica, post-punk, no-wave, traditional Indian music, trip-hop, psychedelia, jazz and even dense, tribal style drum tracks - all laden with the sometime Public Image Ltd member's trademark weighty bass. Throw in some never-before-heard mixes and previously vinyl-only versions, and you have another fine collection of heady, dub-wise fusions.
