Review: Bristol's Hold Tight collective continue to forge their burgeoning label with more delicious soundsystem gems. This time main man Chad Dubz links with Inner Echoes for a fiery foursome. 'Set The Scene' sets the scene with its cavernous palette and pristine percussive elements while 'Play It' takes a well known vocal sample and recontextualises it over a dreamy beat. Flip for 'Too Bad', a track that takes us deep into dub territory with some beautiful trippy edits and a monstrous remix from the Mystic State duo which really brings those twisted bass fills to the fore. System bliss.

Review: It's now five up for the Pearly Whites crew and their self titled series of on going various artist's collections. This one kicks off with the slow and heavy sounds of Deseplate's 'One Day' before the flute laced, jazz-tinged and stoner delights of Boss Mischief's 'Ice Cold.' There are more fuel good and heady sounds with lush flues from Invader Spade then Drone gets more dark and gritty on 'Lil Jug.' Lemzly Dale and BR3 close out this superb mix of trap, grime and dubstep.

If It's Not The Police
If It's Not The Dub
Review: Zam Zam Sounds keep up the pressure with their fifth transmission so far this year (and 20th overall) and welcome Berlin-based soldiers Dub War and Infra into the fold with If It's Not The Police. Formerly a duo consisting of Benny Ill and Bill Robin, this 7" is the first release with the latter working solo under the guise and also his first collaboration with Marius Braun aka Infra. As with previous Zam Zam drops, the roots of dub culture are retained with If It's Not The Policea with a vocal cut backed by a dub rendition. Deep studio science and sound design paired with classic dub aesthetics, dubstep bass-weight, and halftime garage swing are very much in effect here and we hope this is the first of many collabs between the pair.

Sleep Lighter (4:27)
Urban Myth (4:10)
Regalia (5:57)
Cymatism (3:15)
Review: After that under the counter Peace Edits 12" earlier this year, Mr Mitch's Gobstopper label formalises itself as a physical outlet and introduces another new production voice for the instrumental grime cause in the shape of Iglew. The Leeds-based producer may be an unknown quantity in terms of actual releases, but he has been surreptitiously building up an identity through support from Mitch as well as the likes of Last Japan and any Boxed regular will probably recognise the cuts on Urban Myth. A incandescent synth smeared across "Sleep Lighter" sets the tone, clacking grime drums and twinkling melodies playing bad cop good cop on your senses. The blissful new age tones of the title track will appeal to anyone that loved Mr Mitch's LP last year, whilst "Regalia" sounds like Iglew has approached the fine art of the banger and bent it into thrilling, all new shapes.

Simulacrum
Review: Hyperdub kick off 2008 the way they intend to proceed, with new tracks from a new artist. On her debut release, Ikonika comes with her own unique,
warped yet soulful bleep sound. With shape shifting beats that switch styles every few bars it's hard to pin these two tracks down… cos if it was easy, it
just wouldn't be Hyperdub. Both tunes on the 'Please' 12" are one minute minimal/one minute maximal, driven along by Ikonika's special combination
of wonky synth and deep swingin' sub bass melodies that place them somewhere between an early, blocky grime instrumental and the sweeter side of
Detroit techno - except with better bass of course! Who needs a vocalist when your synth can sing like this? Quite how Kode9 manages to keep
unveiling new producers of such abundant talent is a conundrum, but one to be cracked some other time when we're not so busy keeping up with this
astonishing label's ceaseless march into the future.

Technopolis
Review: Red Bull Music Academy participant Illum Sphere - aka Mancunian producer Ryan Hunn - drops the Titan EP on Martyn's 3024 imprint. To have an EP on the Dutchman's label is an accolade in itself - he's only the second producer other than Martyn to release on it - and it lives up to all expectations. It's genre bending, leftfield stuff, ranging from the rave cave mayhem of "Titan" to the meandering deepness "Technopolis", which brings to mind Floating Points. Highly recommended.

An Old Escape (Kill Them Kill)
The Aftermath
Review: If as the title of this Illum Sphere EP suggests and The Plan Is Dead, then long live the plan as the Mancunian producer adds credence to the ethos he's one to watch next year with some gloriously forward thinking beat dynamics entrenched in rich colours and melancholic textures. Breath cannot help but be taken away with the opening heavenly tones of "One For Dimlite" with sumptuous guitar refrains swinging in hippy motion with joyous piano flourishes and vocal harmonies. "Diablo Day Out" twists hypnagogic electric synth lines and dramatic orchestral flourishes around a crescendo of loose drum crashes amidst of dense fog of murky dystopian frequencies, a sensation that seeps into the hissing half step head nod of "Supercharged". On the flip "An Old Escape (Kill Them Kill)" provides the jaw drop moment, kicking down the doors to your ear drums with a monumental mass of Martyn-esque bass movements meets Demdike Stare menace. More big moves from Hoya Hoya!

Militant Dub (3:05)
Dub The Bass (3:07)
Review: Uprising Sounds returns to Indica with a powerful original and even heavier version. "Militant Dub" leads heavily on the main synth line that's almost oriental in its allure and mysticism. As the title suggests, the rhythm is persistent and just on the right side of rigid to maintain the essential funk. "Dub The Bass" is a much deeper exploration of the low end as the warping bass is allowed to turn itself inside out as the track progresses. Standard Indica procedure: only 500 have been pressed.

Inside The Cold Mountain
Propulsion
Rogue
Review: Fresh and direct from the Germanic quarter of the dubstep floor, Infra buries deep "Inside The Cold Mountain" and ironically finds some engagingly warm drones. This is thanks to a pensive lazy funk left lingering in the groans while the rhythm switches from deep to heavy with a light industrial lilt. "Propulsion" is a much more warped affair with a strange off-kilter loop on the kick that coyly hints at a skippy breakbeat but never gives anything away. "Rogue" brings us to an intricate percussion-heavy finale. With weasel-like Q&A stabs nipping in and out of the groove, it's the most mischievous of the trio.

Review: Given his recent form, it was probably only a matter of time before fast-rising Glaswegian Inkke made an appearance on LuckyMe. Variously informed by grime, heavy Memphis rap, Rustie and Hudson Mohawke, Inkke's productions slip effortlessly into the LuckyMe catalogue. There's much to admire amongst the six tracks that make up Secret Palace, including a pair of robust club instrumentals - "Chores" and "Simmer" - which have long been staples in the sets of Skepta and D Double E. Our pick, though, has to be heavyweight grime roller "Tales From The Quick", which peppers a weighty sub-bass line and machine-gun percussion with woozy synthesizer lines.

Review: Twwth & Desto welcome brand new act Inner to the fold by way of this crystalline quartet of 23rd century trap constructions. Swaggering on the cosmic side, there's a touch of the moody Hudsons to the opening track "Pain" before the beats step up into more of grime energy and textures melt into a wavy sensation on "Crystal Ember". Dig deeper for the fractured, clipped and sense-blurring "Closa" before a final 135 hurrah on the RL Grime meets Nick Warren spatial star-gazer. Sweet dreams.

Review: Bristol's Hodl Tight crew make their first foray into the vinyl world here with a new and heavy EP from Inner Echo Ft Redders & Buggsy. The label has long aimed to serve up the best in new music inspired by roots and dub culture and continue in that fine tradition here. 'Winbread' is a fresh contemporary cut with hi-speed and grimy vocal deliveries, tight flows and plenty of references to modern culture while swaggering beats and a fluttering flute bring the vibes. An instrumental is included for more heads down dance floors and ALXZNDER offers a darker version while Somah makes it smooth and deep.

When I Dip
Review: Nonplus allow us a peek at what the forthcoming Instra:mental album will sound like and on the evidence of these two tracks it's going to be quite rowdy indeed! "Thomp" was perhaps named in honour of the sensation that hits you as soon as the truly evil juke rhythm finds its place amidst the bass heavy industrial mist. Embellished by loose rackets of percussion, "Thomp" is a thrilling example of how Instra:mental are always looking to flip the sonic script. The flipside presents 'When I Dip", a trip into the swift retro electro territory Addison Groove recently explored on Swamp 81, with a brilliant vocal sample battling it out with rough futurist vibes over crisp 808 rhythms.

Let's Talk
Vicodin
Review: Naked Lunch unleash two effortlessly cool, idiosyncratic productions from Instra:mental. "Let's Talk" is an ocean deep, slow burning crossover between house and dubstep. It utilises the warm, clicky tone of the constant kick drum that penetrates the atmospheric soundscape of background chime and tension building static. Echoed melody snatches and pulsing synthesized bass stabs create an ominous sense of foreboding that is heightened by the somewhat unsettling, down-pitched vocals. On the flip, "Vicodin" picks up the tempo as the duo indulge their dubstep palette once more. Keeping their futurist sentiments in hand, they keep the sound unique and fresh with some intricate percussion and beatless structure. Wrapped around thumping sub bass and Detroit styled piano chords, this is an atmospheric stepper that moves with a fluid arrangement for the deepest part of the night.

Here are four cases in point: the tripped out vocal sample dynamic on the VIP of "Echidna", the spacey funk and slurring soul of "LIA", the groaning, unsettling harmonic machine tones and sudden human vocal splash of "Program" and the rolling tech-laced stepper "Peregrine", Inyoka has set out his stall with clarity. Review: Running rampant with a tub-thumping horror film drum pattern, this is dark drama on a cinematic scale. Taking in techno references along the way, the superbly-titled "Persistent Dread" thuds and thunders with carnal focus. For added darkness flip for "Signal Motion" where the riddim takes a more developed, polyrhythmic twist and sheet metal screams moan quietly in the fills. Ipman is on top of his game with these two cuts; essential for all dub and tech heads.

"Jigsaw" rattles with a nagging sub thump before breaking into a barely recognisable sample (King Tubby if we're not mistaken) then letting rip with an hot-stepping jungle finale. "Feelin You" continues the theme with more pitched and processed vocal tones (think Kastle remixed by Plastician) while "The Essence" is the club killer of the collection with its widescreen synths, evocative chimes, yearning vocal textures, snare rolls and big-balled bass. Review: Irrelevant presents his debut single on fledgling London imprint Kokeshi - introducing a sound that fits snugly alongside the current genre benders that muddy the borders between, techno, dubstep and electronica. "Better Off In Me" sees Irrelevant drown the vocal talents of the distinctly named Brad Sucks in a pensive, subaqueous soundscape propelled along by clanking metallic rhythms. It's easily the sort of thing Jamie Woon or Burial and a vocalist could be responsible for, and might possibly cross over into wider recognition. Soul:R don Calibre adds some weight with a B Side remix that retains the creeping aqua rhythms but implements a haunting 2 step vibe brilliantly.

Review: Peng Sound return to Clash Of The Titans, their debut release from Young Echo member Ishan Sound and sound system veteran Ras Addis with this pair of remixes from two more Bristol figures in Kahn and Hodge. In original form, "Clash Of The Titans" was a superlative dancehall tee-off between riddim and vocalist, yet Kahn and Outboxxer Hodge are up to the task of reworking the track with their remixes having apparently been rigorously road tested in dubplate form by the respected selectors like Mala, Kowton and Pinch. Kahn is in Bandulu mode a remix that pays reverence to the original's heavy stepping rhythm, whilst Hodge takes elements of Ishan Sound's production and applies them to a 125bpm template, with the results sounding weirdly like Egyptian Lover making UK Funky.

On side A, the Young Echo member joins forces with Hodge - owner of the nicest hair in techno - for the deep and dreamy dubstep shuffle of "C5", where fluid riffs dance above a blazed but powerful beat. Muttley lends a hand on flipside cut "Still Smoking", an altogether livelier and more aggressive - if still suitably deep and hazy - 140 BPM workout that comes complete with stabbing, grime style riffs and some serious subsonic bass.

Having showcased aspects of jungle and classic dub on the previous outings, this Record Store Day special explores both hip-hop culture and very early techno flavours... "Track 1" dusts off an old soul gem, strips it back and slows it right down. "Weaving Dub" is a future flexback to jungle's heady formative era, "To The Club" is a dub house gem with a winningly awkward vocal texture used as a hook. "Pushin'" takes us deeper into the sub swamp with rolling broken beats and layers of squelchy lava bass while "Russ Elements" takes us back to the 170 zone with a dynamic that places the hook about a mile ahead of the faraway drums. Review: Regular conspirators Killawat and Ipman step up to the plate for Tempa once more on the appropriately titled Darkplace. Brandishing some artwork that reveals them to fans of cult C4 comedy at its finest, the title track also lifts an eerie vocal sample from Garth Marengi's Dark Place (we think) before veering off into deepest snaking sub bass territory - seriously don't stand too near the bass bins when this one's in full flow. Whilst this is classic Killawat and Ipman material the flip "Sur Place" adopts a more broken techno rhythm that sounds a lot closer to Killawat's recent outings for Osiris. Manonmars, Bogues, Ishan Sound & Neek - "Skinhead Chick" (3:36)
Manonmars, Bogues, Ishan Sound & Neek - "Burning Paper" (4:23)
Review: Twist up the papers, sit back and get lost in the smoky plumes of this next level DNO dispatch. Linking Young Echo MCs Manonmars and Bogues with forward-thinking producers Ishan Sound and Neek, the results are four woozy, post-modern bluesy takes on futuristic hip-hop fusion that carries the same flame Wild Bunch and Massive Attack did over 30 years ago. From the shiny, interstellar sheen of opener 'Cool Runnings' to the eerie sci-fi wound licking flares and flurries of finale 'Burning Paper', this lives in a league of its own.

Fire Pon A Dubplate
Cat: SCRUB 003. Rel: 18 Sep 09
Mungo Hi Fi - "Fire Pon A Dubplate"
Itchy Robot - "Playback"
Review: The latest Scrub A Dub outing finds Mungo's Hi Fi stepping up with a heavy shuffler that sounds like a roots soundsystem flatbed truck in a head on collision with a tanker carrying pure liquid dubstep. 'Fire Pon A Dubplate' ignites the dance like a ruff-an-tuff steppers anthem fed through a buzzing sub-bass fuel injector, contaminated by trace particles of lysergic acid. On the flip, Itchy Robot from the Afterdark posse delivers the supremely catchy 'Playback', displaying a perfect balance of bounce and squelch hitched to a rocking and rolling digitised drum pattern.

Duploc Selects Y
Cat: DUPLOCLPY. Rel: 20 Apr 22
Ninety - "Snake's Kiss" (4:40)
Zygos - "Ditcher" (4:57)
Mistah - "Shook" (5:34)
207 - "Japan Digital" (3:08)
Idioteque - "Morality" (6:16)
Ghostek - "Seek War" (3:58)
Review: Hold on tight for some low end wobblers here from this new EP, Duploc Selects Y, featuring six sizzlers from six different artists on the DUPLOC label. Ninety kicks off with the cancerous 'Snek's Kiss' with its low end snaking through a desolate urban landscape. Then comes the icy stepper that is 'Ditcher' from Zygos and Mistah's 'Shook' gets more edgy with unsettling leads and earth shattering drums. 207 offers crunchy drum textures and hefty bass weight on 'Japan Digital' and Idioteque's 'Morality' is another lurcher with scraping hits. Ghostek closed down with the dread-fuelled 'Seek War'.
