Fragments
Fragments (12")
Cat: FPL 024. Rel: 19 Apr 21
  1. Luna Awaits (2:55)
  2. Fragments (5:45)
  3. Virtue (5:02)
  4. Worlds Apart (4:45)
Review: Following his soundtrack to the Roki game and appearances on the likes of Monstercat, Aether returns to his spiritual home Fent Plates for the first time since 2017. The wait has of course been worth it as 'Fragments' takes us back to the Scottish deepsmith's finest elements; stirring, poignant chords, foggy, disarming textures long lingering-but-tender notes. From the opening airy pads and trembling keys of 'Luna Awaits' to the final slo-mo plod and echo of the finale 'Worlds Apart', it's Aether doing what he does best; conjuring up emotions you didn't even know you were feeling while making you feel like you're in an impenetrable bubble. Beautiful.

Scabz (12")
Cat: S7S 013. Rel: 19 Apr 21
  1. Scabz (6:13)
  2. Guah (4:12)
Review: Hot on the heels of his recent Deep Medi and Black Acre releases, Commodo makes his debut on Sector 7 with two very distinctive, breaks-based cuts. Both sitting at around 140 but sounding like they're 160 records, there are shades of footwork, broken beat and jungle all in the mix here. 'Scabz' takes the Atlanta sound to dark new places with its slurring vocal sample and heavy 808s while 'Guah' has more of a bashment step to the groove that rattles beneath tribal percussion. Both smack with Commodo's signature tension and sparseness and, just like real life 'Scabz' they're impossible not to pick.

With The Pulse (hand-stamped 180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: CXT 003. Rel: 14 May 21
  1. Conzi - "Kway" (4:12)
  2. Ehua - "Venom" (4:51)
  3. Zygos - "'11" (4:01)
  4. Jamiu - "Rasaks" (4:47)
Review: Full 140 futurism right here from burgeoning London label Cutcross as four exciting new-gen artists from across Europe flex their sub muscles. Conzi lights the smouldering fire with 'Kway', a smoking slab of roomy dubstep primed strictly for big systems. Ehua follows with an even deeper piece of club bass as she weaves startling atmospheres between spacious percussion. Elsewhere Belgium's Zygos fires off some heavy sirens before Jamiu (a UK artist who used to be known as Perspective) brings the whole EP to a juicy and joyously unsteady finale with the rattling percussion and heavy dub echoes of 'Rasaks'. Cutting edge bass.

  2. De-Tu & Congi - "Shallow Waters" (4:17)
  3. De-Tu - "When Will We" (4:09)
  4. Congi - "Tides" (3:42)
Review: A big collaboration here that will appeal to fans of the deep dubstep sound. A duo from Nottingham, Gaz and Tulip aka Congi have appeared on Robin Dub, Yellow Flower and White Peach sister label Fent Plates. De-Tu from Bristol is comprised of Christopher Iona and Jevon Ives, who have had releases on Innamind and Infernal Sounds. The result is the meditative street sound of 'Off My Chest' with its emotive lyrical delivery atop. More knackered and introspective beats await on the sombre 'Shallow Waters' until De-Tu take control on the flip with the intricate polyrhythms of 'When Will We'. Congi then deliver something altogether different on the deep and hypnotic closer 'Tides'.

  2. Dirty Water (feat Strategy) (3:45)
  3. Sufferin' (feat Megumi) (2:23)
  4. Stellar Transit (feat Xakra & Finnoh) (1:59)
Review: Deep Dark & Dangerous snap up debutant signing Hypho here. The talented producer created the tunes on this EP during lockdown and next to his beats, four guests all step up to make fine features. 'Dust Of The Devil' opens with an ice cold sound built on bottomless low ends and with some fine flow from Slowie. Strategy is the guest on 'Dirty Water' and his rapid bars add real energy to the sparse and deadly rhythm. 'Suffering' is another fresh cut with digital effects and punning kicks then the twinkling keys and Digital-dub of 'Stellar Transit' (feat Xakra & Finnoh) close in style.

  3. You're A Neek (3:42)
  4. About Me (4:21)
Review: North UK bass fusionist Hypho continues to push his sound into all kinds of interesting spaces between breaks, dubstep, trap, grime and hip-hop with this vinyl version of last year's 'ENV029' EP for Encrypted. Four tracks heavy, 'Badman Tune' with Logan Olm takes us on a tropical grime flex before 'The System' takes lead with supersized subs built strictly for the massive rigs. Flip for two more slabs or low end luxury as 'You're A Neek' showcases Hypho's instrumental grime ideas before 'About Me' closes with a little window of dreamy two-step soul. The full Hypho and all the trimmings right here.

  4. Winbread (Somah version) (2:53)
Review: Bristol's Hodl Tight crew make their first foray into the vinyl world here with a new and heavy EP from Inner Echo Ft Redders & Buggsy. The label has long aimed to serve up the best in new music inspired by roots and dub culture and continue in that fine tradition here. 'Winbread' is a fresh contemporary cut with hi-speed and grimy vocal deliveries, tight flows and plenty of references to modern culture while swaggering beats and a fluttering flute bring the vibes. An instrumental is included for more heads down dance floors and ALXZNDER offers a darker version while Somah makes it smooth and deep.

Review: J:Kenzo is Jay Fairbrass, a DJ/Producer from Kent, that many followers of Artikal Music would be well familiar with, in addition to releases on 31 Records, Infernal Sounds and Tempa. He's back with an self-released one here titled Ruffhouse VIP. The first version on side A is deeply hypnotic and dub-laden tackle done proper. More underground sound awaits on the flip, with the second version featuring more meditative rhythms and immersive bass frequencies transmitted in typically heady fashion.

  1. One Time (5:16)

  3. Burn This (3:34)
  4. Make It Rain (3:55)
Review: Juss B is Torrey Thomas, a producer based in Long Beach, California with releases on Uprise Audio, CPA and FatKidOnFire. He's got a new one out this week on Belgium's Duploc, the 'leading tastemakers for real dubstep' with some Stateside low end theories on the label's 42nd release. Features the Ourman remix of Sandman, which is said to be highly anticipated and we can see why - definitely some deep hypnotic vibes on this one! Elsewhere, there's the roaring bass exploitations of 'Burn This' and the bass bin destruction of 'Make It Rain' which altogether represent the standard of quality that's so prevalent on the west coast at present.

  4. Delirium (SP:MC remix) (4:49)
Review: South London label GD4YA is really marking itself as the best of the best in the current garage scene. It is keep up a high quality, high rate of release here with another doozy, this time from Karma, aka deep dubstep explorer Corin Bornoff,.Now turning his hand to garage, he brings plenty of low end know how, laying down bulbous and cavernous drums and bass and overlaying them with skeletal metallic percussion that gets you on your toes. These are robust, muscular tunes that are all about making you move your body. The El-B remix is, as always, a killer addition.

  1. We Are Many (6:59)
  2. Boards Don't Hit Back (5:08)
  3. Bewildered (7:56)
  4. 3rd World Cop (4:54)
Review: Legion is a new collaborative project featuring contributions from Boylan, Trends, P Jam and D.O.K, with the aim being to fuse elements of dubstep, grime, breaks and techno into fresh slabs of 140 BOM dancefloor pressure. As debuts go, We Are Many is certainly confident and quietly impressive. Our pick of a very strong bunch is opener 'We Are Many', a hot-stepping dancefloor stomper that peppers a tough beat with metallic percussion hits, warped sub-bass and industrial style electronic textures. That said, there's much to enjoy elsewhere across the EP, including deep dubstep wobbler 'Boards Don't Hit Back', the fuzzy mutant techno of 'Bewildered' and the heavy dubstep pressure of closing cut '3rd World Cup'.

Review: Following up some promising releases for the likes of Stern Plates, Albion Collective and Locus Sound, Lord Jabu is back with the Formality EP on Kirbstomp & Sepia's Hotplates Records. On the A side, we have the kushed-out, bass-driven hypnotism of the title track, which is exactly the kind of street sound dub that we like. On the flip, the quirky and psychedelic 'Ancient Mariner' will entrance you with its creepy vocal and warbling melody, which lurk around an infectious guitar solo sample - and really gives the track its magic.

  3. Invite Chaos (Low Jack remix) (4:08)
  4. Invite Chaos (Loraine James remix) (3:19)
Review: Low End Activism follow up a head turning first EP with a quick second offering just a month later. The label is the latest from the tireless UK workhorse behind Sneaker Social Club and this release once again comes from Low End Activist. They offer just the one single this time - 'Invite Chaos (Kill Dem' feat Sikka Rymes, but it sure is a deadly one with militant drums and lurching drums all finished with darkened mantras from Sikka. Next to the instrumental is a raw, brain frazzling Low Jack remix that also breaks into a more melodic and summery phase before sinking back into its own nasty bass. Loraine James remixes things to a more punchy and high energy framework.

  1. Bonafide (4:40)
  2. Single Fuse (4:38)
  3. Fivers (4:48)
  4. Intricacy (with Foamplate) (4:40)
Review: Nova is a new signing for the Infernal Sounds crew and the artist has saved some of his best work for the occasion. He opens up with 'Bonafide,' a dark and heavy wobbler with a busy, oscillating low end that is full of menace while some subtle pitched up vocals hint at the rave. 'Single Fuse' is a noter one to loosen the bowels and melt your face with its lumpy, leggy rhythms and tripped out watery effects. It's 'Fivers' which then gets more tight and tense with an edgy synth hustling in the background while jittery snares keep you on edge up front. 'Intricacy' closes with a heavyweight bottom end and plenty of reverb to get lost in.

  1. Streets (feat Smurphy) (3:11)
  2. DesertK&QLove Riddim (feat Smurphy) (3:30)
Review: Bokeh Versions' long-running partnership with Jamaica's Duppy Gun label continues via a tasty new single from rising star RDL - a honey-voiced vocalist who has appeared on a number of killer dancehall cuts in recent years - and producer DJ Smurphy. The latter's riddim for 'Streets' - available in tweaked instrumental form later in the EP - is simply superb, with dreamy electronic chords and blissful, synth-pop influences melodies rising above a powerful, sub-heavy bassline and light-touch dancehall beats. RDL's half-spoken, half-sung patois vocals are simply superb, too, on both the original mix and the tougher, more riddim-focused flipside 'Club Mix'. There aren't many of these around, so act fast if you want to secure one of the 250 copies available worldwide.

  1. Wot (4:40)
  2. Na Di Mi Na (4:07)
  3. Schmetterling (3:45)
Review: Last year Sir Hiss (real name Jeff Emmott) was catapulted into the limelight via his most high-profile 12" yet - a fine EP of 140 BPM dancefloor mutations on K-Lone's Wych imprint. Here the Bristol-based producer returns to his own label for the first time in two years with three more weighty chunks of atmospheric post-dubstep pressure. He begins with 'Wot', a sub-powered, off-kilter monster laden with crunchy snares, tough kick-drums, mangled musical motifs and just the right amount of head wobbling effects. 'Na Di Mi Na' is even creepier and moodier, with crackly spoken word samples, plucked harp melodies and horror soundtrack textures wrapping around a more punchy and upbeat dubstep rhythm, while 'Schmetterling' is a quietly jazzy chunk of cinematic trip-hop with a 21st century twist.

  16. West Ten (3:33)
Review: AJ Tracey famously announced the release of his sophomore set, Flu Game, with a fake press conference in which he took on the role of a star basketball player. There's a reason for that - Tracey claims to have drawn influence from the story of Michael Jordan and his legendary Chicago Bulls side of the 1990s - though some reviewers have questioned the relevance of the concept to the album itself. Putting that to one side, Flu Game is a very good album indeed: a contender for the grime album of the year with Tracey spitting thoughtful and hard-hitting rhymes atop punchy grime beats and hot-stepping UK garage grooves. To our ears it's a step up from his self-titled 2019 debut album and in time will be regarded as a genuine grime classic.

Review: For his newest album, the highly rated Flux Pavilion has put together some of his best and most intricate work yet. It is meticulously crafted, multi-genre tackle that hits you in multiple ways - devastating bass, over-sized kicks and heavy lurching grooves, but also delicate synths and dreamy guitar riffs next to airy textures and well treated vocals. All this helps make it more widely appealing record that covers all contemporary bases with the artists own special glistening and gleeming touch. Flux himself recently said he is "no longer a dubstep person, it feels right to move on" and this is a step in the right direction.
