Ingalls Way EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: VIS 303. Rel: 23 Apr 18
  1. Potential Events (6:03)
  2. Windeye (4:51)
  3. Windeye (Radioactive Man remix) (5:14)
  4. Back To Sine (6:07)
Review: Chris Romans has been rolling out crucial electro jams for a number of highly regarded labels since the early 00s. Amongst them are Touchin' Bass, Shipwrec, Frustrated Funk and Central Processing Unit, so that tells you everything you need to know about the level he's operating at as 214. Now he comes to 20/20 Vision with some body-poppin' jams of the highest order, broadening the tech house label's remit to embrace the thriving electro scene with one of its most vital practitioners. "Potential Events" is a brooding, atmospheric affair while "Windeye" draws on a more playful, Detroit indebted palette of sounds. Radioactive Man remixes "Windeye" with a steady, finely detailed approach, and then "Back To Sine" finishes the record off with another snappy salvo of funky drums and bubbling synths.

  1. Linolium Or Cardboard (4:53)
  2. It Never Really Ends (5:01)
  3. Earthworms (5:52)
  4. Nocturnal Hikes (5:32)
Review: This seems like a marriage made in heaven. It sees electro scene stalwart 214 (AKA sometime Frustrated Funk, Touchin' Bass, CPU and Klakson contributor Chris Roman) pitch up on Cultivated Electronics for the very first time. There's a real sci-fi feel to proceedings, as if the cuts were created to soundtrack some neon-lit movie set in a dystopian future. If dancing through the apocalypse is your thing, check the fuzzy and forthright electro-funk of "Earthworms" and the punchy, Drexciya-on-Tatooine pop of "It Never Really Ends". Elsewhere, opener "Linolium Or Cardboard" mixes off-kilter electro beats with Mascara-clad new wave synth sounds, while "Nocturnal Hikes" is impressively weird and spaced-out despite its crunchy drums and weighty bass.

Review: 4E used to be Khan's apartment number in New York City's East Village back in the late 90's. 4E became the trademark sound for his downbeat acid infused electro work. On his kitchen floor he produced a very unique brand of futuristic funk tracks with only a ROLAND TB-303, SH-101 and the Hip-Hop fundamental SP1200 drum sampler. Besides a couple of 12"s for Force Inc. Music and the "Gentle Killer E.P." on Freddy Fresh's Socket imprint, 4E released the highly acclaimed downbeat electro album "4E4ME4YOU" on German glitch label Mille Plateaux. Back in 1998 4E shared the now legendary 12" with I-F "Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass" on the "From Beyond Series" by Ectomorph's Interdimensional Transmissions. Pills & Thrills" on Temple Traxx is four previously unreleased acid-electro stomper that are as funky and noisy as it can get on an East Village kitchen floor.

  3. TBQFH (5:55)
  4. Fe Symbolic (6:04)
Review: Evan Majumdar-Swift may well barely be in his twenties, but he's already built up a catalogue that any experienced producer would be proud. The Sheffield-born, Manchester-based boy wonder has previously plied his trade almost exclusively on Central Processing Unit but here makes a surprise appearance on Hypercolour. The South Yorkshireman hits the ground running with hot-stepping, bass-heavy club thumber "Party Animal", all angular low-end transmissions, hypnotic stabs and glistening IDM melodies - before pitching things down impressively on the drowsy and bittersweet "Cosied By". Elsewhere, "TBQFH" somehow is both funky and foreboding, while "Fe Symbolic" doffs a cap to Aphex Twin by wrapping blissful electronic melodies around a skittish, all-action rhythm track.

  8. Typeface 333 (Volruptus remix) (3:59)
Review: Not content with delivering one of the albums of the year - superb debut "Excitable, Girl" - Steel City youngster 96 Back returns to Central Processing Unit with another must-have double-pack. Record one contains a quartet of fresh cuts in his inimitable style, with our picks including the throbbing, Italo-influenced dancefloor rush of "Knock Out", the vintage Aphex Twin bustle of "Typeface 333" and the intergalactic futurism of "It's Bright Out". Record two is all about the remixes. Jensen Interceptor delivers a thunderous, all-action techno version of "Knock Out", Sync 24 teases out the classic electro shimmer in "It's Bright Out", Volruptus re-imagines "Typeface 333" as a gut-punching electro club workout and Happa & Jabes pretend they're Orbital on a chiming version of "My Time Here".

  3. No Era (Secret Universe Biosphere mix) (5:58)
Review: Adam Shelton returns to his breaks/electro alias A-Future once again with "No Era". Taking off where the launch release "Cybernetic" left us, it's another tense rolling jam that nods back to the very foundations but with added 2020 production punch. Think Tim Wright jamming with Ed DMX and you're on the right path. Remix-wise Alex Jann lays down a pacier, more layered set of rhythm logistics while mysterious alias Secret Universe closes with an authentic jungle reversion, imagine Tim Reaper in a chilled mode and you're on the right star-path.

  3. 214 - "Crouch & Turn" (5:41)
  4. EggFooYoung - "Bass2Large" (3:20)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Exzakt continues to forge one of the purest totems of classic electro with his Monotone label, and indeed his own output. The latest release is a various artists EP which perfectly sums up everything Monotone is about. The Advent leads the way with the dark, melodic "Eye's Of Envy," produced alongside Zein, before Exzakt himself drops a taut and wiry dancefloor bomb in the shape of "Kreep." 214 fires up the B side with the edgy, minimalist thrust of "Crouch & Turn," before EggFooYoung makes a surprise return to the fray with the more Miami-flavoured stylings of "Bass2Large," a slower, dirtier jam with low end frequencies to get the whole club freaking.

  1. House In Blue Rain (5:42)
  2. Dancing Moon (7:55)
  3. Throne Of Clay (6:51)
Review: A new project based out of Copenhagen - Aether's Spring comes shrouded in mystery but makes a bold statement with this first transmission. WATER: Dancing Moon 12" leads in with "House In Blue Rain," a downcast track bathed in melancholic pads and blown out percussion around a steady 4/4 tick. "Dancing Moon" is a more kinetic affair that works with all kinds of synth shapes alongside some primal drum machine percussion that lends the track a new wave quality that suits it just fine. Closer "Throne Of Clay" spreads across the B side in a brooding, journeying epic fit for the likes of classic James Holden or a more wave-minded Jon Hopkins.

  1. Mimis (5:15)

  3. Adax_PCP (6:06)
  4. Scalex (4:42)
Review: The Axces label began last year with a split 12" from Kasper Marott and Alfredo92, and now the latter returns to the label he founded to present a full EP of interlocking electronics with an experimental, home-listening slant. "Mimis" centres around some wonderfully sculpted rhythms and a tasteful dose of dub processing, while "Helfand" takes things further out with dislocated machine chatter and bongo triggering that moves like electro without the 808 backbone. "Adax_PCP" is a crafty slice of crooked techno that plays out with a live, jammed vibe and a jazzy key refrain that brings some noticeable humanity into the track, and then "Scalex" completes the set with further synthetic wobbles around fractured rhythms that look beyond genre conventions to create something truly fresh.

  1. River Bed Sleep (4:53)
  2. Untitled 1 (3:48)
  3. Gahnum (7:30)
Review: Last year, one-time R&S Records artist Alma Construct returned to action after a two-year absence, joining forces with J Wiltshire on the freshly minted Super Hexagon Records imprint. Here he flies solo on the same imprint, showcasing his take on Detroit style electro. Opener "River Bed Sleep" is a high octane, funk-fuelled affair, with fizzing synth lines and spacey electronics wrapped around a punchy beat box groove. "Track 2" cleverly mangles electro and experimental D&B flavours, a trick repeated on breathless, acid-fuelled flipside cut "Untitled 1". The slower, more considered "Gahnum" - think cinematic strings, Balearic melodies and crusty drum machine beats - completes a solid package.

  3. Armambo (BMG remix) (1:45)
  4. We Leave Tonight (Erika remix) (3:26)
Review: RMXD is Armando 'Alpha 606' Martinez' second release on Interdimensional Transmissions and is the rather tardy follow up to 2008's Electronica Afro-Cubano. Flanked by high-profile remixers, Martinez does well to impress with "808 Trax". A linear drum track takes a ride through an inner city at night, the screeches, groans and howls of its nocturnal population kept under the surface by steely claps. Label owner BMG's take on "Armambo" is similarly inclined, this time with spacey undercurrents fusing with tight 808s. Erika's version of "We Leave Tonight" is a more understated deep techno track, while at the other end of the spectrum, Anthony Shakir turns "808 Trax" into a full-on, drum-heavy techno track that is more complex than a spaghetti junction at rush hour.

Review: Amato brings the kind of nasty electro business that fits right in on Helena Hauff's mighty Return To Disorder stable, and you know it's serious from the opening strains of the VHS noir monster "Escape From Grenoble 2018". "Hydraulic Funk" takes things slower, coming on like a freaky Frak flipside and sounding excellent for it. "Machine Outil" takes things in a more muscular direction that sounds built for bench presses and body jerks - the consummate peak time sledgehammer. Umwelt takes this sturdy starting point and demolishes it into a hailstorm of acid malevolence that'll melt your face clean off.

Review: Bristol house imprint Banoffee Pies return with more subtle and hypnotic grooves. On the A side is the mysterious Jay Anderson with "Didn't Care Too Much". While not much is known of him yet, we are sure that will change once people listen to this track: deep minimal house that crosses over into electro much in the vein of Frenchman TC80 or what his peers on Japan's Cabaret imprint are doing right now. Next up, Greek up and comer Simonas Paplauskas serves up the rolling and entrancing afterhours cut "Untitled" which takes its cues from the current sounds of Romania: an immaculate production. On the flip, the entire side is handed over to Ukrainian producer Peshka, who delivers another jagged yet downright wacky and unique take on reduced grooves with "Basic Instinct".

Review: Automatik-Datamatik is a label based in western Germany and founded in 2008 by Adalbert C. Kupietz. He would like to present you with this release, which is a tribute to his late father Leszek J. Kupietz. He was passionate drummer in the 70s/80s and is said to have toured intensively with his band all over the world. Although they never had the opportunity to collaborate directly, Adalbert had access to some of his recorded drum skills on this record. Electronically packed with analog synths accompanied by Leszek's Sonor drums. Used extensively on the album were PPG Wave 2.2, Fender Rhodes, Rhodes CHROMA, Hohner Clavinet, Yamaha CS-50VP-330 diverse ARPs, Korg and Roland Synths.

Review: Aphelion is a Greek producer who is part of the Equations Collective, and here he offers up his first ever release. Clearly well schooled in production, the atmospheres of his tracks belie his debutant status as he kicks off with the mutant bass and pounding kicks of "Volatile Radiance". More warped bass characterises the sparse and eerie "Cosmic Vibrations" before Silicon Scally aka Carl Finlow heads off in a more menacing direction on his remix of "What You Want". The original is a more haunting and paranoid affair that has you looking over your shoulder.

Review: Some proper UK electro here courtesy of ARA-U, a Venezuelan producer based in London. With a previous release coming out on Keith Tenniswood's AFT (on which he collaborated with him under his legendary Radioactive Man alias), it's a sound characterised by pure machine funk, with his inaugural release coming out on his new label No Static. From the raw voltage of haunting downtempo journey "Black Hole' to the breakneck acid electro funk of "Disintegration" the A side definitely does the business. On the flip, "Arvo's Sound Speech" is a total boomer on its own merit, but next up receives a "Slinky Deep Remix" by the ever reliable Carl Finlow - whose idiosyncratic style of dystopia takes it to another level.
