Space Culture Vol 1
Cat: BLIQ 06. Rel: 14 Jan 13
Audio Atlas - "Finland"
Pietro Tangianu - "Frabaer"
Matti Turunen - "Nocturne"
Review: For their sixth release, deep house doyens Bliq present something a little different in the form of Space Culture Volume 1, the label's first compilation 12". The A-side is given over to the dub techno of Audio Atlas, whose track "Finland" is a suitably chilly excursion into mid-tempo 4/4, its steady pulse and icy chords seemingly inspired by a wintry Scandinavian forest at dusk. On the flip, Pietro Tangianu's "Frabaer" is a similarly laid back production, but one that thaws things slightly with its warmer, housier chords, and swung rhythm though its subs are as deep as the A-side. Finally, Matti Turunen's "Nocturne" offers something entirely different, a sparse electro track whose minimal 808 rhythms and thick bass are contrasted with melodic pads and brittle diamond-like textures.

N-Ter - "Who Is Who" (3:53)
Heimelektronik - "Space & Time" (4:32)
Review: Last year, Fundamental Records decided to celebrate their 10th anniversary with an "808 Box" - a snapshot of the electro scene over the last decade comprising 10 EPs in a frosted plexiglass box. This year they've decided release all of the 12" singles separately in limited numbers. This is the fourth instalment and contains some superb electro. For proof, check the bubbly and melodious brilliance of Brice Kelly's 'We Always Shine', the undersea Drexciyan squelch of Vema Diodes' hard-hitting 'Lights', the shimmering rush of N-Ter's 'Who Is Who' - think Egyptian Lover in deep space - and the crunchy, funk-fuelled, acid-fired excitement of Heimelectronik's EP-closing 'Space & Time'. In a word: essential!

Annihilator
Annihilator (remix)
Review: Fresh from schooling us on the current state of the UK electro synth wave underground via the crucial second volume of Messages From the Void, local hero Ali Renault dons his Cestrian outfit once again for some equally momentous movements for the Future Flash imprint. Strictly limited is the name of the game here - only 200 twelves have been pressed up and there's added incentive for vinyl freaks in the shape of a heavy duty wax seal bearing the Future Flash logo which adorns the centre label. All this is secondary to the music however, and "Annihilator" surely ranks in the upper echelons of apt titles as Renault explodes into a frenzy of spazmoid analogue rhythms from the off. Spectral flourishes and bubbling textures keep it interesting and it all rides on top of a pummelling aqua techno groove. The aforementioned spectral elements are expanded on by Perseus Traxx on an eerie electro refix that displays all the producers' talent for eking every last drop of lysergia out of analogue machinery. Big tip!

Microthol & DJ K-1 - "Binary System" (4:00)
DJ Stingray & The Exaltics - "Herd Instinct" (4:14)
VC-118A & Privacy - "Eha" (6:20)
Review: Trust's new XY series is based around what the label describes as "recombinations", though most would say that what's on offer is a fine set of remixes of tracks from the label's bulging vaults. Fittingly, DJ Glow's 'The City', which opened the label's first release in 1998, is the first to undergo treatment, with Viennese duo /DL/MS re-wiring it as an acid-flecked electro stepper. Electro legend Keith Tucker dons the DJ K1 guise and turns Microthol's 'Binary System' into a vocoder-sporting, funk-fuelled electro roller, before the Exaltics re-imagine DJ Stingray's 'Herd Instinct' as a high-octane acid-powered acid-electro throb-job. Finally, Privacy delivers the most revolutionary rub: a ghostly instrumental hip-hop take on VC118-A's 'Eha'.

Datawave - "Structures" (4:21)
Jack Roland - "Cenex Highwax" (4:32)
Psynote - "Crunchmode" (5:22)
Review: It has been two years since Jupiter4 put out the first part of their The Sapcy Saga series, but the follow up doesn't disappoint. Across six blistering tracks, a top notch selection of producers from around the globe turn out no nonsense electro tracks. The punk spirited Drvg Cvltvre goes for an industrial banger to open up while elsewhere Aquatronics - "Hydrosaurus" is all slippery hi hats, metallic hits and hi speed bass. Datawave goes dark to start off the flip side with some sludgy electronics, Jack Rowland stays slow and low with his paranoid and dubby trip and Psynote showcases some bumpy drum programming to get you in the groove.

Kim Cosmik - "Moonrise" (6:58)
Review: Ralph Lawson's Leeds based 20/20 Vision label has made a distinctive shift into electro territory over the last couple years. It is a sound the boss has said has long been in his heart despite him being best known as a house head and longtime resident at Back to Basics, and the quality of the tunes he unearths to put out more than backs that up. The Exaltics & Paris The Black Fu kick off with a shiny, bright, visceral metallic electro workout then three further cuts take in dark wave drum machine rhythms and acid-laced bangers.

First up is label mainstay Carl Finlow, who once again exercises his considerable production prowess with a lithe and limber body popper, while Plant43 takes things stripped and sinister with the deliciously dark 'Forcefield Deactivation'. Review: "Gazillions" marks a first VA offering for the Fever AM label. It calls upon emerging producers from around the world and kicks off with Russian duo Formally Unknown. "Lotus Turbo" is a squelchy electro workout with kick drums to die for. CCL and Flora FM then come together for "Iridescent Lake", an utterly wild drum workout that will blow your socks off. London based brothers Ed and Rob work together as Paper on the old school bleep techno cut "Beaman" before Silene rounds things out with "Jiro", the most experimental of the lot thanks to its hall of mirror feel, slithering synths and jerking rhythms. Bohm - "Tranquility" (6:33)
Piepiep - "System 100" (5:05)
Review: Dutch label 030303 is, unsurprisingly given the name, all about acid sounds in various different contexts. This time out they line up four artists and set them free with their Rolands. Freek Fabricius opens up with a portal to another dimension where bight harmonies and shattered melodies, computer game sound effects and bust bass all happily coexist. Geel Acidvarken's 'Birdhood Acid' is a more slow and meandering acid meditation. Bohm gets busy on a nice electro trip and Piepiep's 'System 100' is a nice tripped out wander through downbeat electro bliss.

Review: "Spacebar Superstars Vol .1" is sure to hit the dancefloors running, and start this new series with a bang, a blip, and a lot of mutant oscillation. Mariel Ito and Pal Secam Kids both bring it heavy, detailed, glitched-up, funky and rough. Snarling basslines, machine-syncopated gurgles, yearning pads and heavy effects blur and smear across most of this record, but always carried by a solid malfunctioning-machine-funk onslaught of percussion and sub-grooves. On the first side of Trust XY2 you have a true force to be reckoned with in the form of Microthol X Ultradyne with the sinister Detroit computer funk of 'Hostile Invasion' (Land Of Injustice mix) followed by the inimitable Peder Mannerfeldt's industrial-edged reconstruction of Clatterbox's 'Semi-Automatic'. Review: The young Clasicos Del Ruido label out of Barcelona celebrates its third outing after an initial string of releases from Medio Escinico and Neue Larmklassiker - different yet complementary blends of raucous synth-filtered dance music. This time it's a collaborative EP featuring two tracks from Coco Carbomb aka Carmen Incarnadine, who delivers both the hazy and drugged-out "Natalie Natalia" drum machine jam, and the more pop-centred chimes of "Ailatan Eilatan". The B-side contains the percussive and cavernous sounds of Preparation Hate through "Consensual", and two gritty cuts by Nattymari, with the wonderfully lo-fi "Pristine" being the jewel of the lot.

Mono Junk - "I'm Okey" (5:12)
Review: If seeking out exclusives for his Kern mix on Tresor from artists as varied as Clatterbox, Via App and Shanti Celeste demonstrated Objekt's standing within the techno community, this 'Rarities' sampler reflects the Berlin DJ and producer's deep knowledge. The four tracks here see Objekt dip into the yawning chasm that is the techno archive, selecting '90s-era tracks from Fret, Mono Junk and Kirk Digiorgio's Future/Past alias, complemented by a turn of the century curio by Pollon. Of these four, it's "Stuck" from Fret aka Mick Harris that stands out in particular, a dark and sleek rhythmic kick that feels like a hybrid of Autechre and Hessle Audio.

Projektname Unbekannt - "Dresden, Den 15 05 2005"
Review: Dresden label Uncanny Valley unveil the third of four compilation EPs with the sci-fi leanings of the distinctive artwork more than matched by the diverse musical input here. From the opening mighty bass drum thud of Metropia's "Night Train" and its subsequent expansion into far reaching washes of analogue synths this release drips quality! Credit 00's "Eiserne Lunge" follows on an inverted Drexciyan flex, with sci-fi stabs of laser bass teeing off with ripples of Martian melody crafted from the finest analogue gear. On the B Side, Tefan Lohse's "Fog Patches" arises from the bubbling sonic ether and quickly settles into a sprawling journey through the expanses of fluctuating acid rhythms whilst Projektname Unbekannt's "Dresden, Den 15 05 2005" ends on an introspective yet still highly melodic note. Kubler Ross - "Victims Of Victimless Crimes" (John Bender cover version) (4:17)
Review: Well, you can't really beat The Vinyl Factory in terms of its diversity of output, especially when they get some of the most interesting and current techno artists to remix EBM material from the 1980s. The So-Low compilation has been one of this year's best releases by a mile, a collection of hard-to-find gems from the likes of Colin Potter, Hard Corps, and many more, but we were utterly gobsmacked when we heard who was reinterpreting this gold. First up, Diagonal's lanky Powell transforms P/1e's "49 Second Romance" into a bubbly gunshot of a tune that keeps the original's vocals intact amid the gargles and jagged percussion stabs, and this killer is followed by JD Twitch's wondrous edit of "Gerry & The Holograms" by "Gerry & The Holograms". The ace Helena Hauff reshuffles The Klinik's "Moving Hands" into a deranged, synth-heavy techno swarmer, and John Blender gives us a cover version of "Victims Of Victimless Crimes" by Kubler Ross, a visionary remix that wraps up this total belter of an EP. Totally and wholeheartedly recommended!!

Named after the party collective of the same name, Knekelhuis aim for a quarterly release schedule with each record conceived and executed by artists invited to perform at their events. The debut release comes from the "two mysterious grandmasters of electronic music" known as Legowelt and Cliff Lothar under the Pagan Sector, and fans of their respective discographies will be licking lips at the mere prospect of Hermopolis Magna. The dizzying "Ultra Paganus" is a real highlight and those of you that prefer their techno daubed in mysticism won't find a better 12" for it this week.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Hitting its stride under the umbrella of Burnski's Constant Sound label, Infiltrate serves up round two from lesser-known talent Pakzad. The electro vibes are dark and deadly on this record, leading in with the murky, dubbed out delights of "Slave" before swerving into the crisp machine funk workout "Rebelion." The Infiltrate remix of "Tension" opens up the B-side with some sinister synth pulses strafing across the low mids and a constant unease courtesy of the sustained strings, contrasting the more playful programming of Pakzad's original. This is classy, hyper modern electro that taps into the current wave of the genre perfectly.

Review: After debuting his Pakzad moniker on Infiltrate last year, Justin Pak makes the leap to Burnski's Constant Sound with this assured set of electro workouts built for the modern age. "Timeless" is a snappy, vibrant cut with a serious amount of techno propulsion to match the crooked funk of the beats. "Clutch" has a more trippy, melodic twist, while "Correlation" hunkers down into a more backroom vibe as detailed as it is freaky. This is seriously executed electro from a fast-rising talent - nab a copy, drop it into a set and watch the bodies writhe.

Review: More than a few eyebrows were raised when Thomas Blanckaert - best known for the Belgian rave revivalism of his Innershades project - popped up on Bordello A Parigi last year under the Palermo Disco Squad alias. Like that EP - entitled Palermo Disco Theme - this follow-up explores a tuneful, ear-pleasing sound that draws influence from classic electro and Italo-disco. Undeniably analogue-rich and stylistically spot-on - all four tracks sound like they could have been made around 1984 - there's little to fault throughout. Highlights include the spacey pads, rising and falling melodies and gently pulsing arpeggio lines of "Sicilian Nights", the sticky, pitched-down chug of "Island Life", and the bubbly electro hustle of "Streets of Palermo".

We haven't seen him in a while, but here he is out of nowhere with a fiery three - tracker for the excellent Frustrated Funk imprint. "Laque" is a gnarly, distorted face melter of a tune with a grizzly backdrop of Drexciyan noise, while "Slowcrash" is smoother and funkier, but nonetheless moody. There's also an unreleased version of "Hidden" that will seriously strike a chord with any Bunker enthusiast. Recommended!

Pancratio never quite managed to get them into his setup until he decided in 2020 to use the machines on their own. The results of his jams on a drum machine, analog modelling synthesizer, sampler and a music workstation are presented here and make for perfectly punchy and timeless techno cuts with bumping beats and wired electronics. He says, "the title, as well as the aesthetic of the project, are inspired by a future-retro approach to early electronics and 70s Italian product advertisement."

Review: Switzerland's Unruh makes a bold and abrasive bow here with blistering electro from four different but equally interesting artists. Panstarrs's 'Pendulum' is all twitching effects and coarse hits that get you on edge and keep you there. Tachyon's 'Night Ride' is a more driven track with a real sense of urgency in the kicks and bass as the acid sounds grow ever louder in the mix but The WWWW takes the gong for the most inventive sound with 'Mammoth Hunt,' which straddles the techno and electro divide with it's mix of rubber and brushed steel textures and glistening chords. Robotron offers a more heady vibe after what is a truly wild ride of an EP.

Review: A very special release here from legendary rave producer Eon, aka Ian Loveday. Loveday, who passed away in 2009, was known and loved for his enduring impact on UK dance culture, although sadly this was the one and only release on his Zarnak Records imprint (although Loveday himself released 12"s on a host of labels including PAL SL, Vinyl Solution and Plus 8). Upon release the Papal Magnet 12" sold out swiftly and soon became a highly sought after record - this batch was found recently and has been passed onto us with the blessing of Loveday's family. On the A Side you'll find the relentless late night throb of "Cable Rider" - 90s techno at its finest. Flip over for the moody introspection of "Passing Clouds" and raw, dusty analogue thump of "Crosstown" - our pick of the bunch. An excellent release.

Review: Sheffield's Parallax Unknown returns this week with some high calibre computer funk. On side A of this one you have the party rockin', booty-bass shenanigans of "Fantasies" featuring samples from rapper Ludacris, while over on the flip things take a darker turn on the dystopian beats of "UGOTME" followed by a 'euphorique' rework by Canadian D Tiffany - with the added vocals of the ultimate pop diva.

Terrence Parker - "Tonight We Luv" (8:02)

Eddie Fowlkes - "Hold Me Down" (6:22)
Review: The young Soul Touch Productions label knocks it out of the park once more with this new 12" featuring Motor City royals at the top of their game. Terrence Parker kicks off with the beautifully uplifting 'Tonight We Luv' with its streaming and soulful melodies and nice smooth drum loops. Drummer B then steps up with the mad piano action and slamming house of 'In My Zone' (feat Javonntte) and last of all, the man so often left out of the early history of Detroit's underground, Eddie Fowlkes, comes through with a spine-tingling vocal deep house delight in the form of 'Hold Me Down'.

Mask Of A Thousand Faces
Review: Glasgow based "Buckfast aficionado" Marco Bernardi adopts a new moniker, The Parking Attendant, for "I've Heard It All Before", a mid-tempo slab of weirdo house, filled with paranoid detuned vocals and prickly West Coast-inspired synth lines. It's joined by "The Mask Of A Thousand Faces", a deeper jack track with a percolating arpeggios rising through murky piano chords. There's also a pair of heavy hitters on the remix front, with both Tevo Howard and JTC providing their own versions of the title track; Howard's doesn't tinker with the formula too much, opting to smooth out some of its rougher edges, while JTC opts for a insane slo-mo acid workout with monolithic chords that has been used by Creme boss TLR's as a palate cleanser in his sets this year. As the label says, it "wipes out everything and anything it comes across" - you've been warned.

Review: Back in December, Genevieve Pasquier quietly returned to action after six years by contributing a remix of the previously unheard "Fairy Tale" to Frigio's The Midas Touch EP. The original version of that song takes pride of place on Reflection, alongside three other clandestine trips into industrial pop territory. It's all deliciously dark and moody stuff, with metallic drum machine percussion, fuzzy synth lines and the artist's own atmospheric vocals taking centre stage. We're particularly enjoying the buzzing guitars, low-slung groove and Nine Inch Nails attitude of "Bouge!", though the decidedly weird, crackly and sparse "Tu Es Le Star" is similarly impressive.

Review: Berlin retro techno jokers Libertine are back with possibly their most awesome release yet. It's by none other than Marco Passrani, the veteran producer who has presented amazing material over the years as Pigna People, Analog Fingerprints and of course Tiger & Woods. This one's called Dead & Alive and features some raw, old school inspired jams: from the early Chicago acid jack of A side cuts 'Water Pressure' or 'Reckless', to some gnarly electro cuts on the B side such as 'One O One' or the particularly off-kilter shenanigans of 'Soul Stealer' which pushes the outer limits towards IDM.

Review: The third volume in Paul Hierphant's excellent Utopian Dystopias series is the most expansive and ambitious yet, with the publicity-shy producer offering up eight tracks stretched across two slabs of purple marbled vinyl. In keeping with the series title and theme, Hierophant delivers a series of moody and atmospheric excursions that combine the sonic sci-fi dreams (and nightmares) of Motor City techno originals (specifically Jeff Mills), with the otherworldly underwater electro of Drexciya. Throw in a bunch of twisted riffs and psychedelic acid lines, and you have a hugely impressive collection of widescreen electro. If that isn't enough to get you going, the set also includes fine remixes from Plant43 (a skittish take on 'Saturn') and Carl Finlow (a funky acid-electro re-imagining of 'Returned Signal').

Review: For those in the know, New York label, party and record store Blkmarket Music has always flown the flag for high quality minimal house way before, and way after, the sound had its time in the spotlight. This time out it is a debut from the Payphone trio who founded Toronto's Payphone Studios and are also part of the Hypnotic Mindscapes crew and label. They have a hard hitting sound, with gnarly late night tech defining the opener before things get more warped and wonky on 'Fool Circle.' Fans of 4am master head-wrecker Craig Richards, do take note.

Review: Crisp sonics as always from the man like David Kennedy; "Robin Chasing Butterflies" continues to plot Pearson Sound's never ended journey into evocative, textured electronic pastures. The title track flutters with flighty electro breakbeasts and a weave of bright, hopefully arpeggios while "Eels" plays the consummate flip - slithering, shadowy, and worm-like in the way it develops, it pulls you in almost hypnotically. We return to the club-friendly beats as "Heal Me" concludes business with a smoky, dark room broken house aesthetic where the hi-hats and foggy pads and atmospheres do all the talking. Singular.

Review: In the lead up to the release of David Kennedy's first Pearson Sound 2018, much attention was focused on "Earwig", a sparse, slow and spooked, TB-303-laden cut that the man himself described as his, "first and probably last acid track". While it provides an intriguing diversion, it's also allows the EP's other two cuts to really shine. "Our Spirits Soar" is a deliciously sub-heavy, breakbeat-powered affair rich in warm, loved-up chords, trippy effects and fizzing, intergalactic electronics. It's pretty tasty, though nowhere near as weighty, intense and percussively punchy as "Rubble", the demolition-themed dancefloor destroyer that opens the EP.

Review: Germany's RFR Records welcomes some high-grade Vienna impact from Peletronic here with his tough blend of electro and abstract house hitting the spot across three new cuts. 'Riddim & Bassline' opens up with fizzing synths a percolating percussion over snappy kicks and hits that never sit still, and nor will you. 'Sry I'm Dazed AF' has a cyborg funk feel with rugged bass and crispy broken beat drum programming. 'True Brew' is a coarse bit of house music for dances in derelict factories - the far-sighted synths bring some lovely Detroit soul. DMX Krew remixes with his usual golden touch to close.

Review: New Italian label Hiroshima 45 Chernobyl 86 Windows 95 present Pubblicazione 001. Starting off on the A side is Penelope's Fiance from Thessaloniki, who serves up a lo-fi and coldwave perspective of the Boards Of Canada on "Run & Gun", while Italians Rawmance and Security team up on the slo-mo EBM mutation of "Un Bon Flic" - bringing you the sound of latter's Knick Knack Yoda burger club in Rome. On the flip, Mannequin boss Alessandro Adriani gives us the gnarly 303 acid epic "Do Not Deliver Me Into The Enemy's Hands" and Raw Ambassador aka Antonio Barbetta gives us the early industrial sounds of "Attack, Attack!" with its rusty aesthetic calling to mind the classics of Portion Control or Skinny Puppy.

Review: The Brokn Toys label rarely misses the mark, with its' multi-artist EPs always a solid source of high-grade electro and related futurist electronics sounds. Predictably, Cold Readings, their latest compilation style affair, is another winner. The EP begins with a chunk of ultra-deep and icy electronica from Pera Sta Ori ('Passive Concealment') and ends with a deliciously raucous fusion of military-grade acid squelch and skittish, heavily edited jungle breaks (Scarlit Port's excellent 'Layla's Acid'); in between you'll find sleazy and chugging electronic paranoia from Shokh, some off-kilter acid-electro from Foreign Sequence, and some moody industrial breaks courtesy of Weith.

Perseus Traxx leads in with a dense and expressive body popper that channels a little vintage B12, while Ewan Jansen takes things deep and aqueous with the gorgeous "Sinders". Review: Having established notoriety for his live hardware-based sets, Ben Pest's latest electro cut, 'Robotic Sales', out on Brighton-based label, Orson, sees the incredible energy of his live sets made flesh - or vinyl, at least. Opening track, 'Robotic Sales' (Acid Redux) kicks the EP off to a flying start. The perfect balance of blistering acid pads and powerful electro percussion, the roboticised vocal sample, paired with 80s-esque synths gives this an undoubtedly classic feel. By contrast, the relatively pared back 'Wobbly Eggs' explores a clever inversion of the typical dance track structure, with key melodic components emerging in the breakdown and disappearing out of view when the main body of the track returns. 'Beefcase', the most acid-heavy track on the release, is a guaranteed floor-filler while the final track, 'Charizard Dream', is perfect for those moments of peak-time, out-of-your-body elation. A seriously strong EP from Ben Pest.

Review: While it was initially set up as a vehicle for his numerous solo and collaborative projects (think Transparent Sound and Artificial Arm), Orson Bramley's Orson Records imprint has recently started showcasing releases from other like-minded artists. This EP comes from one such producer, some time I Love Acid, Balkan and Varvet contributor Ben Pest. He begins via the fuzz-fuelled, medium electro aggression of "Mouth Lawson", a genuinely twisted and low-slung treat, before exploring alien-sounding, minor key-heavy pastures on rave-ready follow-up "Now Animate". Pest's love of twisted TB-303 acid lines is explored further on EP highlight "Vim & Vigour", a track that's then taken to even greater peak-time electro heights on the accompanying Transparent Sound remix.

Review: It would be too easy to draw parallels between the icy electro of Petrovski's opening tune 'Black Gloves' and the frozen snow caps of the Robotdisco Electronix label's Icelandic homeland, but that doesn't mean we won't do it. 240 Interceptor's 'Corpsepaint' is another cold and frosty joint with pixelated synths and crashing hits over a crawling baseline. Luke Eargoggle & Johan Inkinen channel computer madness and abstract Kraftwerk on their 'I Program' and Encounter closes out with the blistering bass of 'Fischers Home.' It's stark, jacked up and perfect for dark, strobe lit spaces.
