Spacebar Superstars Vol 1
Spacebar Superstars Vol 1 (limited clear vinyl 12")
Cat: SBS 006CLEAR. Rel: 24 Nov 06
Mariel Ito - "Once Home"
Mariel Ito - "Spectral Romance"
Pal Secam Kids - "WBS_70"
Pal Secam Kids - "FBAS Methadon"
Review: "Spacebar Superstars Vol .1" is sure to hit the dancefloors running, and start this new series with a bang, a blip, and a lot of mutant oscillation. Mariel Ito and Pal Secam Kids both bring it heavy, detailed, glitched-up, funky and rough. Snarling basslines, machine-syncopated gurgles, yearning pads and heavy effects blur and smear across most of this record, but always carried by a solid malfunctioning-machine-funk onslaught of percussion and sub-grooves. Blurring the lines between electro, breaks, electronica and glitch, "Spacebar Superstars Vol.1" is yet another solid release from the camp, and the beginning of another deadly new series. As you may anticipate from the demented path that this label has taken us previously, you should expect nothing but the newest and strangest in technological dancefloor shenanigans from this limited and not to be missed electro series.

Balkan Vinyl Allstars
Cat: BV 25. Rel: 20 Jun 18
LFO - "I Love Acid" (7:05)
Luke Vibert - "Jungle Hitler" (2:57)
Plaid - "Hui" (4:46)
Andreas Gehm - "Heaven & Hell" (5:46)
Global Goon - "Craehzrhd" (4:19)
B12 - "Proximity" (4:00)
Review: This superb, six-track assault on the senses gathers together some of the most sought-after cuts from the Balkan Vinyl and I Love Acid vaults, five of which have never before been seen on wax. There's naturally plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the wild, lo-fi acid stomp of LFO's "I Love Acid" and the late Andreas Gehm's "Heaven & Hell", to the breakbeat-drive rave madness of Luke Vibert's "Acid Hitler" and the gentle braindance shuffle of Plaid's "Hui". Arguably best of all, though, is B12's "Proximity", which sounds like an electro re-make of LFO's "LFO" with added clandestine creepiness.

Cable Rider (Ian Loveday production)

Cable Rider
Passing Clouds
Crosstown
Review: A very special release here from legendary rave producer Eon, aka Ian Loveday. Loveday, who passed away in 2009, was known and loved for his enduring impact on UK dance culture, although sadly this was the one and only release on his Zarnak Records imprint (although Loveday himself released 12"s on a host of labels including PAL SL, Vinyl Solution and Plus 8). Upon release the Papal Magnet 12" sold out swiftly and soon became a highly sought after record - this batch was found recently and has been passed onto us with the blessing of Loveday's family. On the A Side you'll find the relentless late night throb of "Cable Rider" - 90s techno at its finest. Flip over for the moody introspection of "Passing Clouds" and raw, dusty analogue thump of "Crosstown" - our pick of the bunch. An excellent release.

Praying Sages
Review: Master of minimal wave sonics Alessandro Parisi has spread his full-bodied synth wares around such esteemed labels as Slow Motion, Charlois, Giallo Disco, Lux Rec and more besides, and now he slides up to Vivod with an EP of noirish fantasies you'll be hard pushed to resist. "Crossfire" is the more uptempo cut, but "Ravens" paints a more vivid picture of retro-fetishistic club music in dangerous places. "Praying Sages" goes all out on the soundtrack vibe, but not before it's been remixed by Mick Wills, who casually threads a driving techno undercarriage into the track to create a strangely transcendental slab of cathedral-ready body music.

Innyster - "Todis" (6:08)
Review: Contort Yourself reaches its sixth installment with yet another era spanning gathering of post-punk and industrial oddities for the most deviant of dancefloors to digest. In the contemporary corner we have Penelope's Fiance, a promising industrial artist from Greece. Meanwhile on the B-side, Nigel Ayers as Nocturnal Emissions takes us back to 1983 with the utterly chilling "Demon Circuits Bloodbath" and "Even The Good Times Are Bad". L.I.E.S boss Ron Morelli steps up as U202 to remix "Even The Good Times Are Bad" as a death march of malevolent percussion.

Petrovski - "Black Gloves" (2:42)
240 Interceptor - "Corpsepaint" (5:28)
Luke Eargoggle & Johan Inkinen - "I Program" (5:49)
Encounter - "Fischers Home" (3:33)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged, but otherwise in excellent condition***

It would be too easy to draw parallels between the icy electro of Petrovski's opening tune 'Black Gloves' and the frozen snow caps of the Robotdisco Electronix label's Icelandic homeland, but that doesn't mean we won't do it. 240 Interceptor's 'Corpsepaint' is another cold and frosty joint with pixelated synths and crashing hits over a crawling baseline. Luke Eargoggle & Johan Inkinen channel computer madness and abstract Kraftwerk on their 'I Program' and Encounter closes out with the blistering bass of 'Fischers Home.' It's stark, jacked up and perfect for dark, strobe lit spaces.

Deadzone
Review: Proof of the rude health of the Australian underground abounds with this new label from Phile, who step out with a self-titled debut EP that tells you all you need to know. This is searing, brutalist techno crafted with invention and imagination - the dense crackle of the beats and scorched peals of synth on "Found In Blood" are a visceral force to behold. "Marauder" is mellow by comparison, furnishing a minimal beat with live bass, dramatic string licks and steadily building atmospherics. The analogue dirt of "Abhor" is positively evil, and that's before Karina Utomo's none-scarier vocals come into play. Brimming with personality and demanding of your attention, Phile made themselves a duo to watch in one fell swoop.

Cat: WP 03. Rel: 19 Nov 18
Between Mars (5:17)
Moon Machine (5:00)
Exo Planet (5:42)
Review: Thus far all we know about Wilson Phoenix is pressed into the previous two records the anonymous operator has released so far in 2018. That should be enough for techno heads with their ears to the ground - this is rough and ready hardware business for those who like it nasty. While not perhaps as willfully unhinged as Neil Landstrumm, it's very much in that sonic ballpark, not least on relentless acidic opener "Between Mars." Things get a little freakier with the pinging electro delights of "Moon Machine" before the rowdy rave beast "Exo Planet" levels the landscape with some brutal synth stabs that would sound at home on an early The Prodigy record.

Prepaternal (Paternal Revision) (7:21)
Secrets Of The Pedal Bone (7:19)
Ooze (7:58)
Figuring Out This Damn Jetpack (5:27)
Review: Tristan Watkins is exploring a horse-themed concept in earnest with his work as Phonopsia on his burgeoning Horse Category label. There's an inherent wonkiness to the sound on this third entry which possibly hints to the meaning behind this aesthetic, with 'Prepaternal (Paternal Revision)' leading in with some delightfully off-kilter synth action around a light and skipping house groove. 'Secrets Of The Pedal Bone' meanwhile deals in a quirky sound somewhere in the region of chiptune but with a little Ceephaxian bite, and 'Ooze' deals in some potent, dislocated techno. 'Figuring Out This Damn Jetpack' goes more explicitly towards 8-bit synth lines, but then gives them a walloping beat, making for some of the most distinctive club gear we've heard in a while.

Ghost Town (Innershades remix)
Review: Phran is a brand new recording artist based out of Barcelona and Venezuela, his debut EP for Klasse Wrecks is a fantastic and blistering trip into live hardware session jams. Buzzing with electricity and fuzz the 'Bad Format' EP is an impressive debut from the young artist and sure to please fans of both traditional Electro and forward thinking House. Alongside the four originals we have a remix from up and coming Belgian producer, Innershades. Innershades recently impressed music lovers with his very well-received 'Nina In The Boiler Room' track which was released via Creme and has turned in an effective interpretation in what is soon becoming a recognizable style from the young producer.

Review: Plant 43 is the quintessential electro stalwart, truly immersed in the sound and forever finding new realms of inspiration within the well-worn formula. Following the largely ambient The Countless Stones album on his newly minted label, the man known as Emile Facey now switches stance for some propulsive excursions that will keep his ardent followers more than satisfied. "Density Wave" splits the difference between ethereal pad moods and bruising machine funk, while "Dream Archive" keeps things sparse, deep and heavy. "21 Winters" piles on some of the most dramatic synth work we've heard from Facey in a hot minute, bringing serious levels of bombast to the electro arena and retaining that distinctive edge we expect from a Plant43 record.

Review: To deliver their third release since debuting in 2018, from the less-than-prolific DXL Records has recruited Pressure Point, a producer who received plenty of praise for his earlier singles on Sol Asylum, Telharmonic Texture and All On Tape. The Wrong System EP is a quietly impressive return to form, with the little-known producer smoothly moving between intergalactic tech-house funk (the leaping, sci-fi sounds, shuffling drums and bubbly melodies of 'Timepiece'), mind-altering tech-house box jams (see 'Wrong Systems', with its chiming lead lines and hypnotic vibe), and tech-tinged deep house goodness ('Tom Cat'). The accompanying 'Spacetravel Mix' of 'Tom Cat' is also rather good, in part because it features what sounds like a broken modem having a meltdown over bustling machine drums, foreboding bass and soft-touch chords.
