Review: 4E used to be Khan's apartment number in New York City's East Village back in the late 90's. 4E became the trademark sound for his downbeat acid infused electro work. On his kitchen floor he produced a very unique brand of futuristic funk tracks with only a ROLAND TB-303, SH-101 and the Hip-Hop fundamental SP1200 drum sampler. Besides a couple of 12"s for Force Inc. Music and the "Gentle Killer E.P." on Freddy Fresh's Socket imprint, 4E released the highly acclaimed downbeat electro album "4E4ME4YOU" on German glitch label Mille Plateaux. Back in 1998 4E shared the now legendary 12" with I-F "Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass" on the "From Beyond Series" by Ectomorph's Interdimensional Transmissions. Pills & Thrills" on Temple Traxx is four previously unreleased acid-electro stomper that are as funky and noisy as it can get on an East Village kitchen floor.

  4. Ting Ting (5:31)
Review: The latest must-have EP on Rawax's always on-point Motor City Edition series comes from Simon Hamelin AKA A-Sim, a producer who has previously impressed via No Suit Records and Rawax's main label. He begins in confident fashion via "Disaster Theory", a Drexciya-inspired workout wrapped in cybernetic motifs and deep space chord sequences. "Dub Bells" sees him wrap blissful bleep melodies and starry chords around a tougher, chunkier electro beat, while "Human Disease Network" is a deliciously angular and analogue invitation to dance bristling with heavy electronic bass, ghostly pads and crispy machine cymbals. To round things off in style, he once again reaches for the bleep melodies on the sparse but heavy closing cut "Ting Ting".

Review: Given the amount of jobs he has (Elevator Sound shop owner, modular synth show promoter and superclub manager, for starters) we often wonder how Marco Bernardi finds time to sleep, let alone conjure up new EPs of high quality machine music. This outing on Brokntoys is another fine collection from the Bristol-based Glaswegian. Highlights are plentiful throughout, from the acid-flecked deep electro melodiousness of "Super Deep Voices" and glacial, off-kilter IDM warmth of "Plat+Form", to the deep space modular funk of "Miscopol" and the foreboding throb of the EP's acid-laden closing cut, "Soijien". Smart work from Bernadi... as usual.

Review: If you can't get no "Sweatisfaction", Edward Upton is here to help. The electro stalwart's latest four-track missive is naturally jam packed with heavy dancefloor workouts, with the title track delivering a near perfect fusion of heavy, two-step influenced electro beats, robotic vocal samples and body-popping synth-bass. Once you've toweled yourself down and are ready to go again, turn your attention to the shoulder-swinging alien electrofunk of "Neutral Net Funk", the Soulsonic Force-meets-Drexciya flex of "Urgent Enquiry" and the ambidextrous, outer space madness of "Hardware Storm", where fuzzy analogue riffs, slap bass and jaunty lead lines cluster around another rubbery electro groove. After that, a cold shower might be in order.

Review: The somewhat mysterious Dopplereffekt project founded by Drexciya's Gerald Donald ends their six year production hiatus with this Tetrahymena EP for Berlin label Leisure System. Established by Donald in the mid '90s, Dopplereffekt remain one of techno's most enigmatic propositions with their brand of cold, stark electro complemented by a bold, Cold War-indebted aesthetic and a general disregard for performing live or giving interviews. Though Donald has remained active production wise, developing the NRSB-11 project with DJ Stingray which recently saw the release of the politically loaded Commodified album, the Tetrahymena EP is a welcome return for Dopplereffekt and undoubtedly the most high profile release yet from Leisure System.

The label's second release is a riveting various artist EP, featuring some legends of the Florida scene such as West Palm Beach's Larry "Exzakt" McCormick who gets a serving of body-bashing dystopia by Lethal Agent himself on the remix of "Clarity". Get familiar with 'electrocore' via the devastating "Coma" by BFX before flipping over to side B to welcome the return of Danny Electro on the booming sci-fi aesthetics of "Part Man Part Machine". 4. View From The L2 (6:24)
Review: French producer Alec Falconer presents his third release, following up some great EPs on EXT and Entity London. "Flicker Zone" comes courtesy of local imprint Rue De Plaisance and sees the Parisian deliver more retro influenced flavours. From the booming high intensity workout that is the title track that goes for an electro vibe to the very Dopplereffekt influenced "Les Volets" - this is material made for the dancefloor. On the flip it's all about the chill out room though: from the mellow breaks of "L3D 121D" to the acid ambient journey "View From The L2", this 12" successfully demonstrates Falconer's vast sonic repertoire.

Review: When it comes to electro, Carl Finlow has been doing it longer than most. The machine funk specialist rocks up to his regular stomping ground of 20/20 Vision with another slab of crucial beats for body poppers to get frisky to, kicking off with the crisp, future-noir stylings of "Electronic". Things take an even darker turn on the murky "Side Effects", while "Vortices" weaves a more mystical message out of the intricate threads of synths and drum machine hits. The EP closes out with "Flaw", a blown out and irrepressibly funky workout Drexciya heads will lap up.

Review: Since making his debut on Clone's Crown series back in 2015, keytar-sporting electrofunk revivalist Gary Gritness has released some of the most essential synthesizer-driven dance music of recent times. Hopes are therefore sky-high for "The Legend of Cherenkov Blue", a rare solo album that gleefully wraps the producer's usual snappy electro drums and funk-fuelled basslines in atmospheric chords, poignant melodies and a cinematic sense of developing drama. It's a formula that results in a thrilling number of highlights. These include, but aren't limited to, the spacey wiggle of "Laser-sighted Smoke", the bustling, Jan Hammer style '80s movie theme flex of "Enter Cherenkov Blue (LP2: The Killing)", the mind-altering electro wonkiness of "Snitch Huntin'" and the deep bliss of "Big Marcus Knows The Score".

  3. Don't Look Back (6:12)
  4. Drive It Home (6:27)
Review: Originally released in 1990 on obscure Canadian imprint Big Shot Records, Hi-Bias' second EP is one of those well-regarded underground records' that has become something of a cult classic in recent years. As this reissue proves, the hype is more than warranted; put simply, its four tracks remain timeless slabs of high-grade electronic music that sound every bit as intergalactic today as they did at the dawn of the '90s. While there's one slo-mo foray into dreamy, tactile, loved-up house territory (the sunrise wonder of "More, More, More"), the majority of the EP brilliantly joins the dots between far-sighted futurist electro and moody, atmospheric period techno, with the Canadian duo brilliantly putting their spin on sounds and styles more often associated with Detroit, London and Sheffield.

Review: After the stunning Ostati album released on Organic Analogue last year, Georgia's HVL is back with a new album on the label for his home turf, Bassiani. As a resident of the infamous Tbilisi club, he knows innately how to communicate the vibe of one of the world's most widely discussed techno clubs, only this time he's taken a slightly tougher stance. "Eyes In The Sky" has a fierce, paranoid acid edge, while "F12 (Korg Patch Mix)" gets into freaky, cerebral techno territory. There are intriguing interludes and skits, and plenty more dancefloor heaters delivered with an inventiveness that once again affirms HVL's status as one of the brightest talents operating in the loosely defined field of deep techno.

Review: London/Berlin-based Itinerant Dubs resurface with their first release in five years since their Itinerant Club EP - and not long after their terrific Juno Plus podcast, actually. Featuring three new dance experiments that cross the boundaries and join the dots with brutal simplicity on "Human Emulation", there's some seriously booming electro bass from the dark side on A side cut "Dub This", while on the flip you've got the restrained sci-fi drama of the title track followed by the tunnelling vibe of "Three Four". Fierce!

  5. Saudade (4:31)
Review: It would be unfair to label Mikey Melas aka Jensen Interceptor as anything less than a contemporary electro king, both in terms of the labels he's released for and his own personal brand of industrial tech. The producer is up on Australia's Power Station, run out of Melbourne, marking his debut with the opening "Route E", a classic electro bruiser that sails at a mid-tempo but bangs harder and harder with each new verse; "Delayed Response" is the perfect companion, featuring Kirin J Callinan and a supremely industrial slew of techno lashings. On the flip, "Emulator" strips the melodies down to bleeps and focusses on forming off-kilter drum breaks, while "Tunnel Chase" forms a new, strange variety of acid tech, and "Saudade" trods along to a faster tempo, recalling the likes of Cabaret Voltaire at their most beat-centric. Killah!

Review: Buoyed by the success of two tasty 12" singles on Casa Voyager, Moroccan electro explorer Youssef "Kosh" Benjelloun brings his brand of robo-funk to Eudemonia for the very first time. The EP itself is pleasingly varied, with the Casablanca-based rising star effortlessly flitting between far-sighted futurist techno warmth (the mid-'90s peak-time bliss of "Endless Quest"), deep and glacial electro bliss (the psychedelic electronics, ambient style melodies and bustling drums of "Trespassing"), warm and dreamy club electro (the yearning, dewy-eyed brilliance of "Damn Frogs") and the kind of crunchy, breakbeat-driven ambient techno that's currently undergoing something of a renaissance (seductive closing cut "Benefit Of The Doubt").
