Review: Producer Alexander P.J Geiger was very active during the noughties, releasing a string of singles and albums (both as Geiger and Nass) before all but disappearing from view. Fahrland is his latest artistic incarnation and this, the project's debut outing, marks the producer's first release for eight years. The title, Mixtape Volume 1, hints at the album's construction; this is a set of disparate tracks that showcase Geiger's ability to turn his hand to a myriad of genres. So becalmed ambient cuts are followed, in sequence, by tracks that variously doff a cap to Balearic synth-pop, lo-fi electronic soul, ultra-deep house, jammed-out intergalactic techno, krautrock, hip-hop and dream pop.

Review: Marie Davidson established herself as part of Essaie Pas before going on to greater solo success; now her partner in the experimental electronica duo, Pierre Guerineau, is attempting to follow in her footsteps. "L'Eau Par La Soif", his debut album under the Feu St Antoine alias, is an impressive first missive. Built around a combination of pulsing, dream-like chords, fractured electronic sounds, moody motifs, Autechre-esque broken computer beats, swelling synth-strings and bursts of shimmering melodies, it's an inventive and unusual set that somehow manages to sound both impressively challenging and stunningly melodious. There are only 99 of these CDs around, so act fast if you want to secure a copy.

Review: A new album from Sam Shepherd AKA Floating Points is always cause for celebration, but even by his standards "Crush" is rather special. Largely eschewing the ambient jazz soundscape shuffle of 2017's "Reflections - Mojave Desert", it sees the Shepherd showcase his musical dexterity in stunning fashion via cuts that wrap shimmering neo-classical strings around what sound like modular electronics and rhythms that variously touch on broken beat, off-kilter experimental D&B and Autechre-style IDM. Of course there are ambient and experimental soundscapes showcased, but it's the fact that the album contains a swathe of formidably dancefloor-focused cuts in the style that first made him standout that pleases us most. Highlights include recent single "LesAlpx", the dreamy "Anasickmodular" and the "People's Potential" style deep house intricacy of "Last Bloom".

Review: 12 months on from the release of his brilliant album "Flamagra", Flying Lotus has decided to offer up an instrumental version of the set. Given that the set included some of the Los Angeles-based producer's best work to date, this is no bad thing. Stripped of almost all vocal contributions (bar the odd snatch of backing vocals), FlyLo's breathtakingly brilliant musical vision rightly takes centre stage. And what a vision! He's always been great at crafting glitchy, off-kilter hip-hop instrumentals, but "Flamagra" is much more than that, with the Brainfeeder founder utilizing the work of a wide range of guest musicians and far more nods towards his jazz and fusion roots. The original album was superb, and this is just as good, so don't sleep!

Review: If you were judging Kieran Hebden's 11th Four Tet studio album merely on the way it's presented, you'd immediately think he'd spent the last two years immersed in early '90s ambient house albums. While it's unlikely he's done that, it's fair to say that New Energy does owe a debt to classic electronica sets from that period. For all the exotic instrumentation and subtle nods to post-dubstep "aquacrunk" experimentalism and chiming, head-in-the-clouds sunrise house, the album feels like a relic of a lost era. That's not meant as a criticism - New Energy is superb - but it is true that his choice of neo-classical strings, gentle new age melodies, sweeping synthesizer chords and disconnected vocal samples would not sound out of place on a Global Communication album.

Review: Nils Oliver Frahm is an intriguing musician. A classically trained pianist who has previous released both neo-classic compositions and experimental electronica, he creates music that's in turns spinetingling, atmospheric, strangely otherworldly and pleasingly dreamy. Spaces, his 13th full-length, sees him at his mercurial best, variously delivering emotion-rich synthscapes, Reichian hypnotism (see the impeccable "Said & Done" and "Hammers"), heart-aching piano compositions ("Went Missing", "Familiar"), drifting classical ambience ("Ross's Harmonium") and dubwise soundscapes ("An Aborted Beginning"). When he combines these different strands, such as on the intriguingly delay-laden "For-Peter-Toilet-Brushes-More", the album lifts to a whole new level of brilliance. Recommended.

Review: If anyone deserves a career retrospective, it's Burnt Friedman. The prolific German producer has been plugging away since the turn of the 1980s, delivering consistently impressive releases that subtly doff a cap to contemporary musical trends whilst clearing standing in a myriad of electronic styles. Anthology 1980-2017 brings together a selection of his finest moments (some in unique edited form) from many vinyl-only imprints, alongside a quartet of previously unheard cuts. There's naturally much to enjoy, from industrial-era electronica and dub-fuelled electronic exotica, to warm and twinkling ambient bliss and jazz-flecked IDM curiosities. In other words, it's a fittingly impressive celebration of one of electronic music's longest serving talents.

Review: Reykjavik-based Ben Frost hasn't released any solo material since 2009's By The Throat and we weren't surprised when the infamous Mute imprint announced that they'd be releasing his next full-length work. Both the label and the artist share a deeply experimental stance, and one which is just impossible to pin down. Very much in this vein, Aurora is a tense and chilling collage of diverse sounds and sinister quasi-melodies, starting from the opener "Flex", which sets the scene for what quickly unravels into an all-out cyclone of sonics. This is certainly an LP which should be digested from start to finish, but there are arguably some stand-out moments throughout. The jittering bric-a-brac of percussion that is "Secant" cannot be overlooked, and neither can the brooding kick-shots of "Venter". The ethnic noise infusions of "Sola Fide" and "A Single Point Of Blinding Light" are also particularly rich in experimental gorgeousness.

Review: Soon Jon Hassell will release a freshly re-mastered reissue of his groundbreaking debut album, "Vernal Equinox". Before that arrives, there's the small matter of this re-mastered pressing of another classic LP from his expansive discography. "Flash Of The Spirit" was created in collaboration with Farafina, a group of musicians from Burkina Faso whose extensive contributions undoubtedly shaped the outcome. Rich in West African percussion, enlightened horns, alien synthesizer sounds and group vocals, the album is undoubtedly more up-tempo in tone than some of Hassell's "Fourth World" work, despite the presence of a number of sublime ambient cuts. For that reason alone, it's essential listening.
