Swinging Flavors #7
Swinging Flavors #7 (blue vinyl 7")
Cat: BMRSF 007. Rel: 11 Sep 18
  1. Damn Hot (4:31)
  2. Damn Hot (Danny Scrilla remix) (4:52)
Review: The seventh volume in Beat Machine's ongoing "Swinging Flavors" series of singles arrives on vibrant turquoise vinyl. This time round, it's a relatively new artist at the controls: Breaka, whose debut 12" on Holding Hands tickled our fancy earlier in the year. Happily, "Damn Hot" lives up to its title, brilliantly joining the dots between the snappy drum machine snares, cut up vocal samples and incessant hustle of Chicago Juke, the crunchy breakbeat since of old school jungle, and the futurist intent of contemporary drum and bass. It's really rather good, all told, with Danny Scrilla's flipside remix - a spacey fusion of intergalactic synthesizer melodies and ruffneck early '90s jungle tropes - also hitting the sweet spot.

Yo Yo Riddim
Cat: BTG 001. Rel: 02 Jun 16
  1. Etch - "Yo Yo Riddim" (4:58)
  2. Etch - "Yo Yo Riddim" (Gantz remix) (3:52)
  3. Ilk - "Yes, Ruff!" (6:17)
  4. Ilk - "Yes, Ruff!" (Moresounds remix) (4:34)
Review: Bun The Grid: a fine adage for us all to live by and an exciting new label from Etch and Ilk. Focusing on the experimental pastures between bass, dubstep, hip-hop, jungle, halftime and UKG there's a free-spirited anything-goes attitude from the off. "Yo Yo Riddim" is a stop/start halftime jam with a slight whiff of Scrilla to the aesthetic while Gantz completely shreds the blends and turns it inside out. "Yes" leans heavier on a jungle stance with its sinewy amen flurries and ominous bass drones while French man-of-the-moment Moresounds does his deep dark thing for the rub. There's no messing around with this label launch... A strong sign of things to come.

Cry 4 U
Cry 4 U (7" in hand-stamped sleeve)
Cat: DTR 05B. Rel: 19 Feb 15
  1. Cry 4 U (Quickie edit)
  2. Cry 4 U (Keep Bouncing edit)
Review: Detroitian beatsmith, Platinum Pied Piper and Tiny Hearts founder Waajeed flips from Jeedo to Jeedeci for this unique slice of space-aged hip-hop. Fusing elements of juke, trap, techno and classic 90s R&B to great effect, both versions carefully balance the stark out-there beats with the soft harmonies and rich chords of the R&B sample. Fans of anything that's been delivered on DJ Shadow's Liquid Amber will be all over this.

You Never Show Your Love EP
  1. Jessy Lanza, DJ Spinn & Taso - "You Never Show Your Love" (feat Carter Lang) (3:45)
  2. Jessy Lanza, DJ Spinn & Taso - "You Never Show Your Love" (instrumental) (3:43)
  3. Jessy Lanza, DJ Spinn & DJ Rashad - "You Never Show Your Love" (Teklife mix) (4:04)
  4. Jessy Lanza - "Fuck Diamond" (Bambounou remix) (7:05)
Review: Last seen lining the Freestyle antics of Morgan Geist's latest project The Galleria on the excellent Calling Card 12" on Environ, Jessy Lanza returns to Hyperdub for a record that pairs her up with the Teklife crew. A superb vocalist, Lanza excels when matched with the rolling snares, crisp kicks and thick bass provided by DJ Spinn and Taso resulting in "You Never Show Your Love" sounding every bit like a modern R&B classic. It's accompanied by a Teklife remix which retains the mood whilst adding some Footwork flex into the mixer (the late DJ Rashad was involved in the production of this too). To close out the record, Hyperdub have slipped in Bambounou's excellent drum heavy remix of Lanza's "F*ck Diamond" which originally featured on one of the label's anniversary compilations last year.

Decadubs 1 EP
Cat: HDB 082. Rel: 22 May 14
  1. Mala - "Expected, Level 10"
  2. DVA - "Technical Difficulties"
  3. Kuedo - "Mtzpn"
  4. Kode9 - "Xingfu Lu" (Helix remix)
Review: Hyperdub kick off the vinyl side to their ten-year celebrations with this weighty four-tracker from some of the leading lights from the label's story. Mala is in a strident mood with "Expected, Level 10" carrying through that extra touch of melody from the Mala In Cuba LP. DVA cuts loose with the leftfield scattershot groove of "Technical Difficulties", reveling in tonal experimentation and jagged rhythmic flair to a stunning end. Still locked into the sci-fi trap tangent that characterised Severant, Kuedo turns out the haunting "Mtzpn" and Helix pops up for a remix of Kode9's "Xingfu Lu" that strips down to bare essentials with a little starlit soul rubbed into the framework.

Ghosts (12")
Cat: WAP 341. Rel: 21 Jun 13
  1. Manabadman (feat Spikey Tee)
  2. Ghosts
  3. Duppies
  4. Get Wyld
Review: In a rich and varied career thus far, collaborations and pseudonyms have characterised the multi faceted work of Mark Pritchard with Troubleman, Global Communication, Africa Hi-Tech and Harmonic 313 just four that spring to mind. No more it seems, as Pritchard aligns on Warp for a series of 12" releases under his given name that look to include all facets of his sonic palette in the lead up to a full album. The four track Ghosts 12" kicks this exciting phase off; The A Side pairs the ragga bruk styles of "Manabadman" with the hyper-kinetic footwork-Dtown Techno hybridity of the title track, whilst on the flip "Duppies" is a mammoth duel between 'ardcore sonics and Juke rhythmics - watch out for that bassline!! Final cut "Get Wyld" winds down the mood for a thuggish Dystopian half step finish.

Review: Studio Barnhus continue to surprise, with the first release of 2014 a label debut that shines the light on Stockholm's nascent footwork scene. Described as "the man behind the single best demo email Studio Barnhus ever received," Henry Rodrick's label debut consists of six-tracks that offer a neat document of the work the producer is doing as part of the Svensk Bas collective along with fellow Barnhus graduate Baba Stiltz and Marcus 'Basutbudet' Price. All the material here has been severely roadtested by Barnhus founders Boman, Kovacs and Nordkvist over the past twelve months and tracks such as "Rain & Tears" come filled with the self-effacing touches one comes to expect from a Studio Barnhus release. It's quite exciting to hear how a style of music that's been gestating in Chicago for several decades has been interpreted by a crew from the Gullmarsplan district of Stockholm.

Brain Music EP (includes remixes by Slick Shoota and House of Black Lanterns)
Cat: MODRU 004. Rel: 13 Apr 15
  1. Brain Music
  2. Wet
  3. Brain Music (Slick Shoota remix)
  4. Wet (House Of Black Lanterns remix)
Review: Skubi steps into the limelight with his debut release for Modern Ruin, an imprint reserved strictly for the finest in footwork killers. "Brain Music" is basically a modern hip-hop lick with cavernous low-ends and that familiar juke vocal stutter. The same goes for "Wet", a relatively darker, dreamier sort of affair. Remixes comes from none other than Slick Shoota and House Of Black Lanterns, the former opting for a jungle swing while the latter twists and funks that juke into an even nuttier bundle of drums and percussion. Large.

Review: The ninth solo album from Machinedrum aka LA-based Travis Stewart sees him calling in an army of collaborators and encompassing a wide spectrum of underground styles from drum & bass and dubstep to trap and hip-hop into his musical vision. They key tracks? Well, there's a whole bunch of them here, from the breezy, sunny drum & bass effort '1000 Miles', produced in ;league with Subfocus and the glitchy trap strains of 'Spin Blocks', admirably voiced by Father of Awful Records fame to the more abstract groove glories of 'Sleepy Pietro' with Armenian jazz pianist Tigran Hamasyan. But ultimately it's more than a sum of its parts, and the variety contained within only strengthens its overall offering and creates a fresh, constantly evolving listening journey.
