  1. Pumping In (2:31)
  2. Knock On Wood (2:37)
Review: For the latest volume in their ongoing "Reggae Cut Loud" series of seven-inch singles, Harlem Shuffle Records have gathered together two suitably rare gems from the undisputed king of rocksteady, Alton Ellis, neither of which have previously featured on a "45". A-side "Pumping In", an early rocksteady treat, is rich in R&B style guitar riffs, warm bass and an echo-laden vocal from Ellis. It was recorded in 1970 but for one reason or another only surfaced a few years ago. Flipside "Knock On Wood", a cover of the Eddie Floyd soul favourite, was recorded a number of times by Ellis; this version is the superior 1972 Joe Gibbs take, which boasts some superb Hammond organ sounds and a defiantly dub-wise reggae riddim. It's absolutely essential.

Give Me Your Love (reissue) (Juno exclusive) (white vinyl 7" limited to 150 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: SB 7 UMG1 WHITE. Rel: 15 Jul 20
  1. Give Me Your Love (4:17)
  2. Try It, You'll Like It (3:29)
Review: Exclusive Juno white vinyl reissue repress.....You'll struggle to find a more loved-up and life-affirming chunk of proto-disco brilliance than The Sisters Love's 1973 "Give Me Your Love". The record's lasting impact can be seen in the number of times that it's been reworked, re-edited or bootlegged over the years. Here it gets an official 7" reissue via Soul Brother Records. It sounds as good as ever, with the all-female group's now familiar vocals rising above Blaxploitation style guitars, fluttering flutes and powerful horns. It's a celebratory release, and then some. This time round it's accompanied by a lesser-known gem, "Try It, You'll Like It", which first featured on the B-side of a 1973 single. This is a powerful chunk of conscious funk/soul fusion of the sort that was incredibly popular during the period it was recorded.

  1. The Jet Leg (feat Ryo Nakata (Osaka Monaurail)) (4:21)
  2. Wolf (4:03)
Review: Originally recorded for the cult label Flying Dutchman in 1975, Oliver Nelson's Skull Session album was, and is, way ahead of its time. He was an arranger who worked with a Thelonious Monk, Leon Thomas and Louis Armstrong but his own solo work was most impressive, too. This record is a wild ride through jazz with huge elements of soul, synth, disco and boogie all colouring in his mad expressive grooves and mind-expanding sounds. The American used ARPs and Moogs to make this sci-fi jazz sound and each track here has a strong lead, with shiny surfaces and imaginative arrangements all keeping you utterly locked in for the ride right from the off. This limited, deluxe, 180g reissue is an absolute must.

Funky President (reissue) (clear vinyl 7" limited to 200 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: BAB 004CLEAR. Rel: 14 Jul 20
  1. James Brown - "Funky President" (extended Breaks Special edition) (4:25)
  2. The Vibrettes - "Humpty Dump" (part 1 - extended Breaks Special edition) (3:16)
Review: US 7" label Beats & Breaks present "Funky President" which is a funk song originally released as a single in 1974, by the hardest working man in show business at the time - the Godfather of Soul - James Brown. It appeared on his album entitled 'Reality' released that same year. According to Brown, the song's title referred to U.S. President Gerald Ford - who succeeded Richard Nixon in the White House shortly before it was recorded. It is one of Brown's most frequently sampled recordings. The rhythmic portions of the song have been used on dozens of hip hop tracks. On the flip, The Vibrettes' "Humpty Dump" is another killer funk number that was recorded by one Roscoe Porter and originally released by Lujon back in 1973. The sample source for many a respected beat by such legends as J. Dilla, Four Tet, 2 Bad Mice and even Aphex Twin.Limited clear vinyl edition of just 200 units...

Amen Brother (reissue) (clear vinyl 7" limited to 200 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: BAB 002CLEAR. Rel: 14 Jul 20
  1. The Winstons - "Amen Brother" (3:32)
  2. The Chosen Few - "Candy I'm So Doggone Mixed Up" (3:25)
Review: The Beats & Breaks 7" series was founded to satisfy the desires of DJs, mainly by serving up re-edits that put some of the world's most recognizable drum breaks front and centre. This edition kicks off with a rearrangement of the Winstons' "Amen Brother", whose drum break not only became a staple of U.S hip-hop in the 1980s, but also the foundation of jungle and later drum and bass. This edit wisely gives plenty of air time to the infamous drum break, dropping into it at frequent intervals in between bouts of punchy, horn-heavy funk. Flip to the B-side for a tastefully chopped and rearranged version of The Chosen Few's super-sweet 1976 soul cut "Candy I'm So Doggone Mixed Up". This is the limited clear vinyl version and limited to just 200 copies !

Nuthin' But A G Thang (7" limited to 300 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: IMP 004. Rel: 13 Jul 20
  1. DR DRE - "Nuthin' But A G Thang" (45 edit) (3:59)
  2. The Lady Of Rage - "Afro Puffs" (45 edit) (4:01)
Review: For those whose Californian hip-hop collection is missing a few gems, the West Coast Classics series should be a must-check. The latest edition in the series of the light-touch "45 Edits" by Ronnie Frazzle serves up two more essential cuts from the peerless Dr Dre and lesser-celebrated Death Row Records signee The Lady of Rage. Side A boasts the superb "Nuthin' But A G Thing" from Dre's iconic 1992 album "The Chronic", in which the main man and Snoop Dogg trade verses over a typically on-point G-funk style beat. The Lady of Rage's 1994 jam "Afro Puffs" is a darker, sleazier and tougher affair, with the Virginia-raised rapper's distinctive flow rising above punchy beats, creepy chords and a filthy analogue bassline.

  1. A Quest Called Tribe (part 1) (4:42)
  2. A Quest Called Tribe (part 2) (4:48)
Review: Smoove is back with another of his magical conceptions. This is one of the most bold and adventurous projects he's ever undertaken on Wack Records and finds him layering up hundreds of samples taken from more than six full lengths by A Tribe Called Quest, and he's one of the best to ever do it. The result is a magnificent and mellifluous 7" that brims with soul, jazz, rich beats and vocal snippets that interplay so smoothly you'll be in awe. Both sides are alive and authentic and picking apart the pieces is all part of the fun.

Synthetic Substitution (reissue) (clear vinyl 7" limited to 200 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: BAB 001 CLEAR. Rel: 13 Jul 20
  1. Melvin Bliss - "Synthetic Substitution" (3:50)
  2. Sweet Daddy Floyd - "I Just Can't Help Myself" (4:17)
Review: This tasty, DJ-friendly 7" single boasts two extended, break-heavy reworks of obscure and in-demand soul workouts. On the A-side you'll find a tasty extension of Melvin Bliss's superb, piano-heavy 1983 cut "Synthetic Substitution". While Bliss's brilliant original - all heartfelt vocals, jaunty keys and warm bass - is largely kept in tact, the mystery re-editor naturally makes more of the opening breakbeat, which was sampled several times during hip-hop's "golden era". Flip for a similarly tasty rearrangement of Sweet Daddy Floyd's 1978 Blaxploitation style disco-funk shuffler "I Just Can't Help Myself", a cut rich in rolling breaks, densely layered percussion, punchy orchestration and "Shaft"-style guitar licks.Limited clear vinyl edition -only 200 copies pressed !
