Get Ready For The Young Folks
Cat: BW 004. Rel: 18 Apr 24
Get Ready For The Young Folks (4:03)
Dre's Night (4:13)
Review: France's faves Battle Weapons deliver two heady new edits, only for those ready. On the A comes an ingenious, probably never-done-before, almost laughably why-hasn't-anyone-else-ever-thought-of-this-until-now breakbeat rendition of Peter Bjorn & John's 'The Young Folks'. To be frank, they've not done much besides beef up the backbeat a little, but a simple sprucing up is sometimes all a tune needs. On the flip comes a phattened version of 'Forgot About Dre' mashed up with the Azzido Da Bass UK garage classic 'Dooms Night', also produced to hilariously, surreally arresting effect.

Creeping Around (4:12)
Creeping Around (instrumental) (4:27)
Review: Dive into the haunting depths of Pratt & Moody's latest single, 'Creeping Around and you will find this enigmatic duo showcasing their expertise in merging dark soul with haunting melodies. Building on the success of their previous hits (including the wonderful 'Lost Lost Lost' and 'Wheels Turning') they explore themes of infidelity with raw emotion. Pratt's velvety vocals intertwine seamlessly with Moody's evocative guitar on 'Creeping Around' which has a late-night introspection to it where melancholy and passion converge in a David Lynch-esque world. Each note resonates with longing and desire that stays with you after the music finishes.

Stronger (dub) (4:41)
Review: The soul, funk and disco 7" community is a strong one. Besides garage rock and psychedelic rock, there might not be another genre that is so beloved on the small but mighty 45rpm format. So, it completely makes sense if you are a newer producer releasing music in these genres then definitely know your fan base. Cool Million is a Danish and German duo doing just that. Their track 'Stronger' is the track and the title of their sixth full length album from 2019. The album has gained such strong reviews that they put it now as a single along with the Dub version on the reverse side. 'Stronger' is a positive and upbeat anthem that is sure reign in the innocent bystanders to party. The Dub is a super-cool alternative version that reminds of us classic roller-skating funk track from Midnight Star or Kool & The Gang. Need a party starter? Get this!

Minas Do Rei Salomao (2:40)
Review: Hot on the heels of this one first being reissued back in May, it now gets a second run courtesy of Disques Messager out of France. Cristina Camargo's 'Moral Tem Hora' was one of the standouts from the super Brazilian Disco Boogie Sounds (1978 - 1982: selected by Junior Santos) compilation. It's a perfect fusion of Latin flair, Brazilian disco and jazz funk magic that has fat bass riffs and lots of bright chords and busy percussion next to a classic vocal. On the flip things get slower, sentimental and all loved up on 'Minas Do Rei Salomao' which his a perfectly steamy jam for those hot afternoons under the sun.

Pete Rock & CL Smooth - "They Reminisce Over You" (Altered Tapes remix instrumental)
Review: Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth are a big part of the history in hip-hop during the early 90s. Hailing from Mount Vernon, New York they released two classic albums and a handful of singles to great success. A regular selection on the very influential MTV Yo-Raps show they quickly gained notoriety for Pete Rock's use of obscure soul and jazz records. Here we have the reissue of the 2017 release that brings their most popular track to the masses once again. 'They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)' blew them up big and was their highest charting record. This 7" features the Altered Tapes remix along with the instrumental on the second side. You would be hard pressed to find another track that is the epitome of the New York hip-hop sound in 1992 then this mega-hit.

Review: Pratt & Moody's latest single, 'Creeping Around,' delves into the depths of dark soul with haunting melodies. The duo, comprising Pratt and Moody, showcases their collective prowess in crafting a narrative of infidelity that transcends boundaries. Pratt's velvety vocals intertwine seamlessly with Moody's evocative guitar, creating a timeless soundscape dripping with raw emotion. Supported by the masterful artistry of Cold Diamond & Mink, 'Creeping Around' transports listeners to a realm of late-night introspection, evoking the atmospheric ambiance of a David Lynch film. Review: Collins And Collins were originally at the Top Of The Stairs back in 1980 when this one first landed. It has since become a revered underground classic much loved on the modern soul circuit as a timeless gem. The song was first composed by Ashford & Simpson who recorded their own version but when playing live would switch to the Collins & Collins version. The tune first came on CD via Expansion back in 1993 and now gets a first official 7" version back with the exceptionally rare version of Gamble & Huff's 'You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good' which first was recorded by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes in 1975.

The latter gives us the mythical "Garra", a tune that sits very nicely next to the likes of Marcos Valle and co, and the singing trio get a reissue of 2006's "Freio Aerodinamico", a gorgeous blend of samba, disco, and something perfectly exotic and vintage. Review: It's always a buzz to see a new Athens of the North 7" drop onto our shelves. This first drop of the year comes from label regulars Coast to Coast who had their unreleased and self-titled soul album reissued here back in October 2021. It is the opening track from that glorious record that gets its own pressing on 45 rpm here with an instrumental on the flip. Brothers On The Slide (4:10)
Review: In the early '70s, Cymande made a trio of killer albums that remain stone cold classics to this day. For this reissue 7", Mr Bongo has dipped into two of those albums - 1973's Second Time Around and 74's Promised Heights - and dug out two of the best-loved, most-sampled cuts. On the A you'll find "Fug", a low-slung, bassline-driven party full of killer drum breaks, righteous horn solos and, and conscious lyrics that call for global action against inequality (little, it seems, has changed politically since). It's one of those you should really own, as is the ever more familiar flipside "Brothers On The Slide", which boasts one of the most recognizable grooves in the history of dance music.

Review: This unique 7" features two different artists - Raye Cole and Rachel Maxann - doing their own renditions of the same song, in this instance, 'Find Myself Another Man'. These versions bring a modern twist to a rhythm and blues banger that will transport you back to the good old days, Raye's version adding a bit more of a hop to it while Rachel's version has a garage band and surf rock tinge to it. Both are late night blues without a doubt though andit'sanother case of hats off to Original Gravity records for always keeping things fresh with their ever-changing moods.

Rachel Maxann - "You Gotta Set Me Free" (3:40)
Review: Another mighty fine reissue here from the masters of just that in the Original Gravity label. It features distorted organ loveliness here that continues with their practice of putting out new music in the style of old soul 7"s. On this split-flip 45, two of the most eminent soul vocalists out today share a side each. St. Louis singer Raye Cole helms the A-side, with her energetic number 'You Gotta Set Me Free' stomping on forward with a shaker-clapping, horn-heavy blues swing. Rachel Maxann - perhaps another alias similar to Nestor Alvarez - brings up the B on a finger-clicking alternate take on 'You Gotta Set Me Free'.

Review: Bob Stanley's Measured Mile label comes through with a magnificent double-header from Connie Stevens. This is a real northern soul monster that was arranged by the late great and legendary Philly soul man Thom Bell. Original copies will cost you well over L250. First up are the rich and sumptuous string sounds and rattling tambourines of 'Tick Tock' with its perfect vocals. Originally the b-side tune was titled ''Betcha By Golly Wow' but the angel changed it to 'Keep Growing Strong' after it was a hit for both the Stylistics and Prince. It's another heart warming gem that will have you in a slow spin in no time.

Review: Mr Bongo's excellent Brazil.45 series digs deeper into the legacy of Jorge Ben, one of Brazil's most famous musical exports and an enduring samba king. Opening up is 'Ma Ma Ma Ma Mae (A Lingua Dos Anjos)' which was originally on his 1980 album Alo Alo, Como Vai? It's a modern sound, with disco inflections and big wind sections, but also some trademark Ben playfulness in the lyrics which speak of flying saucers and angels. O the flip, things slow down and get more steamy and sensuous on 'Dona Culpa' from his Cauby! Cauby!' album of the same year. Two sides, two styles, one irrepressible artist.

Review: One song, two versions, one killer Philly 45. The Cooperettes got in first during the mid 70s with a very rare copy that picked up momentum during the Northern/modern soul crossover in mid 80s when copies began to surface and never really lost favour as OG copies on I-D-B go for near L500. Review: Brazil 45s hit the quarter century in their run and show no sign of stopping. It's an all-girl affair on this one as two hugely popular and prolific singers take a spin under Mr Bongo's spotlight. Elizabeth (often known as Elizete) lays down a steamy samba flavour that gets raunchier as the track develops. Elza, meanwhile, gets busy on a Bossa tip as a carnival of percussion and horns go toe-to-toe with her sharp, sexy staccato vocals. Powerful.

The band is made up of keyboardist Paul Coleman and saxophonist M.C. Morris Brown, and guitarist Martin Dumas co-wrote the a-side here, 'Lover's Holiday' with Brown. Review: .No, this is not a surprise jazz-funk outing from Dan 'Caribou' Snaith, but rather a reissue of the sole single that French outfit Cortex released as Caribou, way back in 1977. Copies of that record are now very hard to come by, so it's great that Trad Vibe have delivered this fresh edition. It's worth picking up for 'Californie' alone. The track is a near perfect fusion of the Gallic ensemble's usual loose jazz-funk sound and energetic, sun-drenched disco - all breathless electric piano solos, memorable guitar licks, dancefloor-friendly grooves and spiralling group vocals. Original flipside 'Stevie', a more relaxed and loved-up affair closer in tone to Cortex's usual material, once again resides on the reverse.

How Could I Know? (4:26)
Review: During the various lockdowns of 2020 and '21, Crazy P delved deep into their vaults to see what unfinished songs were lurking in the dustier corners of the archive. These were then used as inspiration for new, finished and polished versions. This seven-inch contains two fine examples of this repurposing process. A-side 'If Life Could Be This Way' is suitably strong - a heart-aching, bittersweet chunk of laidback melancholia that sits somewhere between blue-eyed soul, Balearica and hazy West Coast jazz-rock. It's sure to be a fan favourite in years to come. 'How Could I Know' meanwhile is similarly horizontal, with tear-jerking (electronic) string sounds and a fine lead vocal from Danielle Moore clustering around a clicking, lo-fi drum machine beat

Review: Richard Caiton has many great soul treasures in his arsenal and several labels have gone digging for them over the years. After a great reissue of his 'Thank You' gem on Record Store Day last year, now Upright have dug out 'I Like To Get Near To You.' He originally recorded it for the label back in 1969 and it is one of the standouts in his discography all these years later. As well as a straight back wax version you can also cop it on this pink & blue splattered vinyl complete with a booklet that provides some extra context about the music from Cizana and La Nueva Generation. Both tunes are flame-hot and bristling with energy. The A-side is all joyous flutes, hand drums and percussive Latin grooves then the flip slows things down and ups the brass. Review: A great choice of reissue by Kent Dance, Carolyn Crawford's 'Get Up And Move' is a fiery vocal soul highlight, and impassioned plea to the object of her affections to "get up and move", before he, she or they do something they "don't wanna do". It's a situation we can all relate to, but this recollection of Crawford's rendition of the scene lends the feeling an extra weight, igniting the inner carpe diem in all of us. From the unheard vaults of Mickey Stevenson's Mpingo label in the early 70s, it now comes double-billed with the Motownier 'Sugar Boy' on the flip, also hitherto unheard.

'I Got You' tops up the trailblazing, quickfire repertoire with a dust-caked window into the past, by way of well-crafted, surround-mixed breakbeats and a gritty gospel sample on the A. Complementary to this comes the instrumental, highlighting the fact that the fact that the vocal sample is indeed the cherry on top; it hardly 'needs' said vocal to convince the listener to dance, though it does round things out with utter finesse.

Review: Soul startlers Crystal Clear (not to be confused with the many house and drum & bass artists of the same name) laid down 'Stay With Me' in the mid-1970s. The song is a sweet and romantic, yet no less punchy, ditty, packed with contrasts between flitty, fay vocals (from an unknown singer no less) and a heavy-set drum recording to juxtapose. Now re-released via Soul Brother, we're reintroduced to the song in all its hip-swanging glory. Just as its themes deal well with reconciliation, we feel to have been reunited with its charms, as we eagerly oblige the command to "stay"...

Rescued from an acetate and hotly debated on the many soul music forums, one thing's for sure - this is a perfect slice of early 60s soul whoever is singing on it. You might even hear the subtle bleeps on the audio which marked out listen-only tapes from the Motown vaults for folk working on a project. This is a historical artefact as much as a great tune - a must-grab for any soul head.
