Cat: SD 45S007C. Rel: 16 Dec 19
  1. Combat (2:46)
  2. The Lovers Revenge (3:41)
Review: Dirty Harry is a real maestro with his MPC and after too long without hearing from him, he is now back on the buttons and seemingly in fine form. The London born artist is a real jazz, rap and funk veteran with years of knowledge and he brings all that to the table each and every time. His frequent collaborator is Nat Lover, whom he met while travelling in New Zealand, and together they deliver some real rawness here. "Combat" is a flurry of chords, scratching and New York street breaks that hits hard and "The Lovers Revenge" carries on in much the same fashion.

  2. Nickodemus, The Spy From Cairo & Gitkin - "Inmortales (Body Move)" (feat Femina - El Buho remix) (5:22)
Review: Following El Buho's "Tributaries" remix album, Wonderwheel offer up this choice 7" featuring two distinct cuts not found on the main record. First up is El Buho's take on grand master Quantic, working with the storied producer's considerable knowledge of Latin music to create a remix of "Cumbia Sobre El Mar" already well loved on globally minded dancefloors. On the flip comes the never before released El Buho version of Nickodemus and Femina's "Inmortales" - a fierce, drum-tastic version to get bodies shaking down.

  3. Yermande (with Mbene Diatta Seck - Prophet 5 mix) (6:09)
  4. Yermande (Prophet 5 rhythm) (6:08)
Review: Hardwax don Mark Ernestus harvests the first fruits of his collaborative seeds sewn in Senegal with a clan of sabar drummers with the superbly titled Ndagga Rhythm Force project. The results on the first mix of "Yermande" are as deeply rhythmic and percussive as you'd imagine, as drums take centre stage and the dubby vocals lie waiting in the sonic ether. Truly meditative stuff from the Ndagga Rhythm Force. Remix-wise the instrumental gives the drums an even more prominent position while the Prophet 5 versions add dense, tightly plucked guitar and clipped synth textures to the lead melody.

Lamb Ji (12")
Cat: NDAGGA 22. Rel: 10 Dec 15
  1. Lamb Ji (with Mbene Diatta Seck) (8:04)
  2. Lamb Rhythm (7:57)
Review: Berlin's master beat specialist, electronic dub pioneer, African music enthusiast, Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound member, and Hardwax co-founder, Mark Ernestus, is back with a new Ndagga bullet - and yes, that list was exhaustive on purpose. The myth of a man has turned his attentions from techno to African beat music over the last few years, and the releases have been amongst our favourites within the 'outernational' scene. "Lamb Ji" is as electric and magnetic as you'd expect, full of life and mystique thanks to its complex percussive patterns, hazy production, and lamenting tribal vocals - a super charger on the system. "Lamb Rhythm" is basically a version of the original; more dubby, more stripped-back and with no vocals. Powerful stuff, as always.

Review: Perennial party boosters, Breakbeat Paradise dive into spring with a fire quartet of modern funk. With bands repping across Europe, it's a global groove affair as longstanding German funkateers buss up big boogie hooks on "Get On Down", Swiss soulboys Grand Mothers Funck up the tempo with the sweaty floor-focussed groove of "The Dog" and Nasa Funk fly the p-funk flag so hard and proud they need a new pole. UK's A Man About A Dog rips up the finale with a scratched-out Latin heater. Original.

Togo Soul 70: Edits & Rarities
  1. Yta Jourias - "Adome Nyueto" (Bosq rework) (8:10)
  2. Roger Damawuzan - "Loxo Nye" (Pushin Wood remix) (5:39)
  3. Napo De Mi Amor - "Cacatchoule "Berceuse Bassari"" (3:04)
  4. Sewavi Jacintho - "Miade Dua" (5:35)
Review: Hot Casa's latest must-have release is a veritable smorgasbord of Togolese treats. It focuses specifically on obscure soul music made in Togo in the 1970s, with two hard-to-find original cuts being joined by two contemporary re-edits of similarly obscure classics. The EP opens with Bosq's smooth, dancefloor-focused tweal of Yta Jourias's breezy, horn-heavy tropical soul workout "Adome Nyueto", before Pushin Wood takes over and adds a little contemporary electronic bounce - and some particularly colourful synths - to Roger Damawuzan's "Loxo Nye". Over on side B, Napo De Mi Amor's "Cacatchoule Berceuse Bassari" is a fuzzy soul shuffler rich in bright, Juju style guitar solos, hazy vocals and Hammond organ stabs, while Sewavi Jacintho's "Miade Dua" is a sweatier and heavier concoction powered by loose-limbed drumming and sun-kissed instrumentation.

Cat: JAZZ45 002. Rel: 29 Nov 18
  1. Tunji (3:30)
  2. Mode for Trane (3:54)
Review: The Nat Birchall Quartet debuts here with Tunji, a new 7" special out through the inimitable Jazz45 imprint, home to some of the best contemporary jazz - of all shapes and sizes. The title tune "Tunji" is a sax-led masterpiece, slow yet constantly building and morphing into something new and exciting, taking the term 'broken beat' onto a new platform. Conversely, the B-side's "Mode For Trane" lingers at a slow tempo, transporting you into a bittersweet lullaby with Nat Birchall's sax very much in the spotlight. What a cracking little 7" - TIP!

  1. Obeah Man (4:00)
  2. Seeking (3:26)
Review: Ahead of a fresh album due later in the year, Nat Birchall fires up his quartet and returns to the Jazz45 series with a second seven-inch salvo for the Jazzman offshoot. A-side "Obeah Man" is wonderfully sweet, soulful and breezy, with Birchall and company layering jaunty spiritual jazz style piano riffs and snaking solos (think Clarinet, sax, trumpet etc) over a warm, loose and bustling groove. They continue on a similar vein on the slightly bolder flipside cut "Seeking", where bandmembers trade solos atop a classic jazz style bassline and fizzing drums. That forthcoming album should be killer.

Review: The Social Joy label has dropped a couple of low key, high grade jazz cuts from Guilhem Monin and Remi Mazet in the past few years. Now the label fires up after a couple of years silence with this gorgeous gathering of contemporary grooves from London-based band Natural Lateral. Tapping into the buoyant sound emanating out of enlightened clubs and studios in the UK capital, this promising outfit present the kind of instant, groove-oriented jazz that will have old heads and fresh faces nodding in approval. There's a Latin twist to their approach, not least on the oh-so-sweet "46 To Foulden", but there's also space for smoky, mellow moments on the likes of "Days With Amber".

Review: Kalita are excited to announce as their second release of 2020, the first ever official re-release of Cameroonian singer Jeannette N'Diaye's 1981 disco masterpiece 'Makom Ma Bobe', backed by an extended edit courtesy of Mendel! Originally appearing as one of three tracks on 'Mut'a Mbamba', her 1981 single released on Cameroonian producer Jojo Ngalle's record label Disques Jojo, 'Makom Ma Bobe' has recently exploded as one of the most sought-after Afro-disco records out there, with prices becoming ever exceedingly eye-watering and copies ever harder to find. Now Kalita come to the rescue, offering a loud and remastered 12" single for all. If that wasn't enough, the single is also backed by an extended edit of 'Makom Ma Bobe', courtesy of Netherlands-based DJ and producer Mendel! It's fast, it's euphoric and it's lasers are to die for. Review: With releases on 22a, Beat X Changers and Wolf Music, Bradley Zero is very pleased to welcome Neue Grafik onboard his revered imprint. The record itself paying homage to the Parisian house dance scene, while taking cues from the broken beat sound of London - like on the emotive slo-mo soul of "Innervision" feat Wayne Snow or "To Peckham Rye" which definitely takes its cue from Kaidi Tatham. We particularly enjoyed the very Three Chairs influenced deepness of "Dance To Yemanjaor" and the the ruff 'n' dusty MPC jam "Why You" reminiscent of Motor City Drum Ensemble's Raw Cuts series. The tracks are largely sample based, but also employ much more live instrumentation than in previous productions.

Laced with a plucky bass and just the right smattering of sleaze, it set the foundations for Ivan's extensive solo career. It also provides the perfect groove tools for The Mighty Zaf to work his editor craft and beef up the vibe with subtlety. Keep on dancing!

  1. True Love (part 1) (3:15)
  2. True Love (part 2) (3:11)
Review: Not-for-profit label Rain & Shine likes to do reissues differently, offering all profits - rather than a percentage - to the families of the artists whose records they release. The latest artist to profit from their generosity is New Horizon, an act whose sole single - 1977's "True Love" - is here given the reissue treatment. The A-side "Part One" version is a wonderfully sweet and musically rich modern soul number that combines slick male vocals with subtle orchestration and loose, languid grooves. "Part Two" (side B) is a much more forthright version; a dancefloor-friendly take that combines a funkier, heavier version of the groove, twinkling piano lines, beefy bass and jazzy guitar licks with punchier drums and selected snippets of backing vocal.

Red Light Green Light

Review: The Super Disco Edits camp have pulled off something of a coup here, securing the rights to a previously unissued 1987 cut from studio duo New Jersey Connection, whose sole 1981 single, "Love Don't Come Easy", has long been a favourite of boogie DJs. "Red Light Green Light", featuring the breezy vocals of Cynthia Wilson, sounds like a long lost boogie classic: all sugary-sweet backing vocals, rubbery bass guitar, twinkling '80s soul synthesizer melodies and punchy drum machine percussion. The A-side vocal version is accompanied by a tasty instrumental mix, in which the focus switches to the NJ twosome's superb production. File under: "must have".

Mixing raw talent and an unrivalled love of funk, they mix up classic know how with new school thinking. This 45 shows plenty of influences form library sounds to gangster style funk with yacht rock and jazz also thrown in. The synths and guitars interplay to perfection and ensure dance floors will be in raptures when they hear this one.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Emotional Rescue take one final trip into the archives of The New Morning - the Munich-based Afro-cosmic project active in the mid-'90s. This third round of tripped-out dancefloor delights draws on a global panoply of sounds once again, starting in a mystical mood with "Kongo Bina" before firing up the party stove with "Roots & Culture" and slapping down a heavyweight chug on the fierce n' slow "Flatline". There's plenty more fireballs on the B-side, not least the looped-up funk of "Satan (Dub)" and the heavy hitting percussion of "Riddim Of Inari (Tribal Mix)". "Anthems" finishes the final volume of this valuable reissue series on a stirring, melancholic note with powerful choral voices and sentimental melodic refrains - the perfect emotional set closer.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Emotional Rescue continue to explore the fruitful early '90s exploits of The New Morning, a Munich-based crew who took their lead from the Afro-Cosmic scene pioneered in Northern Italy by DJs like Danielle Baldelli and Beppe Loda. On this second installment of spiritually charged, low tempo club killers, you get the chants and percussion of "Riddim Of Inari", tightly looped West African funk of "Mi C'Yaan" and the stunningly evocative "When Will You Come Down?". There's more rolling rhythmic business to be enjoyed on "Picayune" while "Cricket (part II)" amps up the distortion without losing the groove, and then "Ancient Nomads" seals off this volume in style with a slow, hard-slapping beat to get fully entranced too.

  2. Groovin' (instrumental) (2:57)
Review: Last December, Los Angeles combo Night Owls debuted on F Spot Records with a genuine 21st century rarity: a reggae-soul cover of Donny Hathaway's 'This Christmas', featuring lead vocals from the mighty Durand Jones. For their fourth single, they've decided to deliver another cover, this time of Young Rascals' cut 'Groovin'. Their sun-soaked, rocksteady style reggae take is apparently a homage to Willie Mitchell's cover (as sampled by Wu-Tang Clan), and features Jungle Fire man Jamie Allensworth singing majestically over a jaunty rhythm track rich in heady Hammond organ sounds and toasty bass. The band's brilliant arrangement and tight-but-languid performance naturally comes to the fore on the B-side Instrumental Mix.

Dan Ubick of The Lions, Connie Price and the Keystones is on the guitar, Blake Colie plays drums, The Lions man Dave Wilder slaps the bass and Roger Rivas of The Aggrolites plays organ and piano. "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get" is another happy, bubbly tune with fine vocal acrobatics and a rhythm section that you never want to stop playing.

Review: Since launching a year or two back, the nascent CoOp Presents label has delivered a trio of tasty singles from up-and-coming stars of the revivalist West London broken beat scene. Their fourth release continues this trend by offering up a debut single from former EVM128 collaborator Oliver Night. BB James lends a hand on brilliant opener "Make Believe", where clipped piano notes, heavy sub-bass, dubbed-out synth riffs and echoing vocal samples ride a crunchy, Seiji-style bruk-up groove. The EP's other hugely impressive moment also features a guest artist, Jay Phelps. He helps ensure that "Swing For Life" is a deliciously dubby and spaced-out chunk of late night deep house bliss.
