Cramp Your Style (remastered)
Cat: BLUECANDLE 1496. Rel: 23 Jan 20
  1. Cramp Your Style (2:15)
  2. Watcha Gonna Do About It (3:00)
Review: "Cramp Your Style" by All The People surely belongs among the canon of all time funk standards, sampled aplenty over the years, included on numerous compilations as well as being the recipient of cover versions from Breakestra and Killer Meters. Originally issued on the Blue Candle label back in 1972, a newly remastered edition of that 7" is now available for any funkateers out there without the 45 in their collections already. Robert Moore's yearning vocal sounds all the better for it too! And don't sleep on the bluesy delights of B side track "Watcha Gonna Do About It?".

Baluba Shake
Ace
Cat: NW 5. Rel: 24 Nov 20
  1. Brunetta - "Baluba Shake" (2:22)
  2. Rita Pavone - "Il Geghege" (2:15)
Review: Ace Records are she-pop experts who have kept a constant stream of high quality offerings from the 1960s coming. Featuring mostly British and American artists the label now widens its net to serve up a pair of high impact tunes from their well-received Ciao Bella! Italian Girl Singers Of The 1960s compilation CD. Brunetta's 'Baluba Shake' has big and cavernous drums, plucked guitar riffs and rollicking great chords next to lung-busting vocals. It's a real dancer. Things get more impassioned on the high speed funk chase that is Rita Pavone's 'Il Geghege.'

Black Is Beautiful
  1. Chronixx - "Black Is Beautiful" (feat Sampa The Great - remix) (3:34)
  2. Raiza Biza - "Trouble" (feat Oddisee & Zenyth) (4:38)
Review: Sampa The Great is one of the most exciting artist to have broken through in recent years. She's put out two stellar albums, appeared on Jools Holland and how gets called upon for a guest spot on this split 12" on Low Key Source. She appears on the A-side, where muses on the power of blackness on 'Black Is Beautiful' while Chronixx layers up nice broken beats, wood block hits and earthy melodies. Flip it over and Raiza Biza's 'Trouble' is a pained hymn about poverty, struggles and racial tension married to a mid-tempo hip-hop beat. Both tunes are powerful, thought provoking works.

Just One Kiss Away
Cat: ZP 38. Rel: 06 Aug 20
  1. Ronn Colbert - "Just One Kiss Away" (3:56)
  2. Ronn & Selah - "Tell Me What I Wanna Hear" (4:42)
Review: Stand by for the much anticipated follow up to the unreleased Ronn Colbert 7" on this label earlier in the year. "Just One Kiss Away" is an ultra rare soul stepper from 1981. It finds Ronn and Selah Colbert go up against one another, and both serve up super sultry, seductive vocals that tease and please. Add in steamy chords and soaring strings and you have one helluva smoocher. "Tell Me What I Wanna Hear" is another romantic to and fro between the pair, with a little more tension and build in the rhythm edition that adds an extra element of spice. Both are sure to become re-found classics.

Cat: 3K2018 LIMITED. Rel: 24 Sep 20
  1. Flacko - "Lonely Town" (Karizma rework) (6:38)
  2. Robert Glasper - "Enoch's House" (DJ Kemit remix) (7:03)
  3. Guy - "Groove Me" (KZRekchampma club mix - part 1 & 2) (8:55)
Review: There's been little information released about this three-track EP, though we do known that it's the work of "a classic US label going incognito". Whatever the source, what counts is the quality of the music; happily, the EP is impeccable. Leading the charge is Karizma, whose remix of Flacko's "Lonely Town" is a breezy, soft-focus chunk of modern soul/broken house fusion smothered in hazy synthesizer chords and slowly strummed Latin guitar breakdowns. DJ Kemit dances towards peak-time floors with a wonderfully emotion-rich house version of jazz pianist Robert Glasper's "Enoch's House" built around similarly tropical drums, while KZRekchampma's glorious flipside club revision of Guy's "Groove Me" sits somewhere between bass-heavy UK house, soul-powered New Jersey garage and revivalist synth-boogie.

  4. Jad & The - "Deep Dark Grimey Dancefloor Moment" (6:05)
  5. Shy One - "House Party" (4:23)
  6. Session Victim - "Gheister" (2:10)
Review: The second sampler for Rhythm Section International's fifth anniversary compilation has landed, and like its predecessor is packed to the rafters with must-check gear. Duke Hugh kicks things off with the short-but-sweet, Rhodes-powered soundscape "Zoe", before Research Club delivers some bubbly pitched-down acid ("Cafe Iguana") and Paula Tepe jams out some quirky proto-house goodness ("Panamericana"). Over on side B Jad Lee (as Jad & The) takes over with some deep, reggae-influenced breakbeat house, before handing the baton to Shy One with the deep, bruk-up dreaminess of "House Party". Session Victim provides a fittingly strong conclusion with the quirky deep house drowsiness of "Gheister".

Togo Soul 70: Edits & Rarities
  1. Yta Jourias - "Adome Nyueto" (Bosq rework) (8:10)
  2. Roger Damawuzan - "Loxo Nye" (Pushin Wood remix) (5:39)
  3. Napo De Mi Amor - "Cacatchoule "Berceuse Bassari"" (3:04)
  4. Sewavi Jacintho - "Miade Dua" (5:35)
Review: Hot Casa's latest must-have release is a veritable smorgasbord of Togolese treats. It focuses specifically on obscure soul music made in Togo in the 1970s, with two hard-to-find original cuts being joined by two contemporary re-edits of similarly obscure classics. The EP opens with Bosq's smooth, dancefloor-focused tweal of Yta Jourias's breezy, horn-heavy tropical soul workout "Adome Nyueto", before Pushin Wood takes over and adds a little contemporary electronic bounce - and some particularly colourful synths - to Roger Damawuzan's "Loxo Nye". Over on side B, Napo De Mi Amor's "Cacatchoule Berceuse Bassari" is a fuzzy soul shuffler rich in bright, Juju style guitar solos, hazy vocals and Hammond organ stabs, while Sewavi Jacintho's "Miade Dua" is a sweatier and heavier concoction powered by loose-limbed drumming and sun-kissed instrumentation.

  2. Rabo De Saia - "Ripa Na Xulipa" (Charles Maurice extended version) (5:28)

Review: France's Favorite label dabbles in all things funky and disco-flavoured, and this time they've decided to go with a Brazilian edge on their latest 12". Painel De Controle begins with a Waxist mix of "Relax", a chilled-out boogie monster with sultry vocals, while "Ripa Na Xulipa" by Rabo De Saia is more uplifting and heavy on the disco strings. Finally, Nick The Record rewires "Labirinto" by Famks into a subtly electro-fied boogie nugget. Nice!

  2. Onna No Yujyo (1934 edit) (3:44)
  3. Haru (5:31)
  4. Excellent Drom (7:14)
Review: Some of you may remember Ricardo Vincenzo from his 2015 debut Pororoca Transatlantica, a two-track missive that blended South American production with all the warmth of sun-kissed downtempo electronica. If anything, this belated follow-up for esteemed Finnish label Sahko is even better. Vincenzo begins with the farmyard animal samples, rolling tribal percussion, African chants and rich electronic bass of "Cabras No Elevado Quilombia", before chopping and looping a dusty old tango track on the mid-tempo house pulse of "Onna No Yujo". On the flip you'll find the low-slung, post-dubstep creepiness of "Haru", where exotic vocal samples drift across a sparse but heavy beat pattern, and the aural trip to Morocco that is "Excellent Drom".

This Is My Year
Cat: DFL 001. Rel: 30 Oct 19
  1. This Is My Year (2:48)
  2. Keep This In Mind (3:26)
Review: First up on Discs Of Fun & Love - a fresh reissue label launched by London diggers Miche and Frederika - is a fresh 7" pressing of Rochelle Rabouin's sole single: a 1977 45 that has long been a sought-after "side" amongst crossover soul collectors. A-side "This Is My Year" is the one for dancefloor plays, offering as it does a celebratory vocal over what would then have been called a "modern soul" backing track (disco, basically, though the term was used in Northern Soul circles as a catch-all for anything that wasn't old and stomping). Side B's "Keep This In Mind" is a superb slow number smothered in strings and glassy-eyed orchestration that's probably always on rotation at the mythical "Heartbreak Hotel".

Cat: 890926. Rel: 11 Sep 20
  1. Jordan Rakei - "Wind Parade" (4:50)
  2. Alfa Mist - "Galaxy" (6:03)
Review: Blue Note Re:imagined is a carefully curated collection of brand-new covers of classic material from the legendary label as served up by a selection of the UK scene's most exciting young talents including Ezra Collective, Nubya Garcia and Brit Award-winning Jorja Smith. For this latest 7" it's Jordan Rakei, who actually hails from Aus, but let's not get mad about that because the super smooth soul singer reaches new heights on the free flowing, heart opening 'Wind Parade'. Jazz pianist Alfa Mist takes care of the flip with a suitably cosmic exploration on 'Galaxy' that pairs live, busy drums and soaring synths with rich chords.

  3. Cecilia (5:30)
  4. On Jou Matin (4:18)
Review: Labels Hot Mule and Secousse have teamed up to deliver something special: a killer EP of "lost gems from the golden era of Zouk and Gwo-Ka" in Guadeloupe (that's 1985 to '92, fact fans). The four tracks showcased here were performed and produced by an artist whose fame in Guadeloupe sadly never spread any further, Max Rambhojan. The A-side boasts two versions of the rather brilliant and suitably cheery "Tou't Jou Pa Min'm": the jaunty, sun-kissed, whistle-sporting 1986 original mix, and Rambhojan's heavily electronic, synthesizer-heavy, calypso-tinged 1992 re-make of his biggest local hit. Over on side B you'll find the bubby dub bass, sparse synths and flute solos of the decidedly tropical "Cecilia" and a suitably breezy, sunset-ready gem entitled "On Jou Matin".

Cat: RSRLTD 007. Rel: 14 May 20
  1. I'll Call You Every Morning (2:54)
  2. I Can't Let Her Go (2:53)
Review: The latest missive from the must-check Rain & Shine label should appeal to serious soul collectors. It offers a new edition of a private press "45" by Illinois outfit Joel Ramirez Jr and Fantasy that's recently been changing hands for vast sums online. A-side "I'll Call You Every Morning" is a super-sweet modern soul number that combines a blue-eyed soul style lead vocal with a bright-and-breezy backing track rich in groovy bass, spacey synths, clipped guitars and seriously positive piano motifs. It's really rather good all told, and the kind of earworm that you'll be singing in the shower all week. Over on the flip you'll find the rhythm & blues/rock flex of "I Can't Let Her Go", which will probably appeal to AOR disco lovers.

Cat: JAM45 01. Rel: 08 Jan 20
  1. Raphael Saadiq & Q TIP - "Get Involved" (3:17)
  2. Q TIP - "Vivrant Thing" (3:16)
Review: First released way back in 1999, Raphael Saadiq's Q-Tip-sporting "Get Involved" is a warm and woozy, retro-futurist chunk of soul/hip-hop fusion that harked back to an earlier musical age. It remains an arguably underappreciated dancefloor bomb and here gets the reissue treatment courtesy of the freshly lauched 45 Jams imprint. It comes backed by another stone cold classic from Q-Tip, "Vivrant Thing" - a cut first featured on the flipside of the Tribe Called Quest member's much more celebrated "Breathe Don't Stop" single. It's a little more stripped back than the A-side, with Q-Tip delivering his distinctive flows over a crunchy and fuzzy, Jay Dee produced backing track crafted from samples from an old funk record.

Cat: SDE 38. Rel: 22 Oct 18
  1. Let Me Put It In Your Ear (previously unreleased) (2:49)
  2. In My Life (previously unreleased) (3:56)
Review: Two never-before-released cuts from ill-fated Indianapolis troupe who looked set for the big time but moved to LA and consequently got shelved. 1978's loss is 2018's gain, however, as we're treated to two of their shelved gems right here. "Let Me Put It In Your Ear" is a belting falsetto soul slammer articulated with real urgency while "In My Life" is much more of a smouldering affair that builds up into an emphatic soul crescendo. Put it in your collection.

Cat: CAT 2010. Rel: 14 Apr 20
  1. The Way We Live (3:39)
  2. This Thing Called Music (3:54)
Review: When copies of Raw Soul Express's The Way We Live crop up online, they regular fetch eye-watering sums of money. Originally released back in 1977 on T.K Records' soul/funk offshoot Cat, it remains the greatest single work by the short-lived Miami band. "The Way We Live" is a superb example of sun-kissed, feel good, conscious disco/soul/funk fusion, built around a killer, horn-toting groove and emotion-rich vocal. The jazzy, low-slung flipside "This Thing Called Music" is less in demand, but almost as good. As a result, this is a surprise reissue that all funk, soul and disco diggers should crave.

Review: Obscure Californian group The Real Thing (not the Liverpool 4 piece ) who recorded for US label Whiz enjoy a very special spotlight on Super Disco Edits. Both cuts previously unreleased; they're as fizzy as the product they share a slogan with... "Give It Up & Turn It Loose" takes James Brown to turbo charged pastures, tearing up the funk rule book so rapidly they've got friction burns. "It's A Family Thang" brings us back down to earth with such unified tightness and positivity it would make Sly and the Stones blush. The real deal.

Review: Sometimes you just can't beat the golden oldies and so it is that Soul Flip turns his attention to a couple of raw soul bangers. Up first is Otis Redding's classic "(Your Love Lifted Me ) Higher & Higher" with a rousing bass section which drives along the original version. The hits hit hard, the vocal is given room to breathe and the swing in the drums is infectious. Redmo Reworks
Cat: FTR 001. Rel: 05 Sep 14
  1. Bob Marley - "Is This Love" (Redmo acoustic takedown)
  2. Redmo - "Sadi Soul"
Review: Sam Redmore has quietly been doing his thing in hometown Birmingham for some time, crafting soul-soaked re-edits, bootleg remixes and mash-ups that tend towards the tasteful end of the spectrum. Having previously built up a solid fan base via his own Bandcamp page, he's finally made it onto wax. The two cuts featured here are amongst his best. The A-side revision of Bob Marley's "Is This Love" is particularly potent. It strips out the drums, thus emphasizing the genuine sweetness of Marley's original. Flip for "Sadi Soul", an upbeat, headnodding rework of a vibraphone and double bass-laced jazz-funk jam with added hip-hop swing.

Listening to this timely and much-needed Record Store Day 2020 reissue, it's easy to see why. The track is exactly the kind of surging, stomping, up-tempo number that makes Northern Soul dancefloors go crazy, all topped off by an excitedly rousing lead vocal from Redmond. Over on the flip you'll find original B-side 'A Change Is Gonna Come', a lusciously arranged, performed and produced version of the Sam Cooke favourite smothered in melancholic horns, jazzy guitars and sustained organ chords.

Bringing this bunch of rare grooves (from the original tapes) for some edits that combine creativity and functionality - all with maximum dancefloor impact. On the A side, we've got the pitched-down slo-mo funk attack of "Good High" which is as low slung as you like it. Review: Tramp Records' latest vital reissue delves into the back catalogue of the Reggie Saddler Revue, a largely little known funk combo that released a handful of 45s at the start of the 1970s. This double A-side brings together two killer cuts that originally appeared on different 7" singles, both of which are now near impossible to find. A-side "Raggedy Bag" is raw, weighty and impassioned - a scorching slab of deep funk that more than lives up to its high reputation amongst collectors. Over on the flip you'll find "Love Is Just Like A Baseball Game", a sweeter and more loved-up affair blessed with superb vocal harmonies that's nevertheless impressively fuzzy.

The resultant collaboration, "In My Groove", is absolutely delicious: a deliciously sweet - and occasionally sleazy - late night love letter that sits somewhere between contemporary R&B and classic, horn-heavy '80s soul/jazz-funk fusion, all topped off with an inspired lead vocal. Nigel Lewis provides the flipside remix, cannily playing on the classic elements featured in the A-side original mix whilst adding some simmering strings and turn-of-the '80s musical touches of his own.

Review: Original Gravity is run by label owner Neil Anderson, who has a tireless work ethic and superb devotion to ska, reggae, and everything in between. His love of boss rhythms comes to the fore once more here with new tunes from three pseudonyms - The Regulators, Woodfield Road Allstars and Prince Dolly - all of whom, in actual fact, are him. Regulators cut "Why Why Why" opens up with a heavy bottom end, "Coast to Coast: has a big organ led groove and "Why Dub Why" reworks the opening tune into a rocksteady roller.
