Review: More quality grooves from Washington DC label specializing in reissuing obscure and unknown 70s and 80s dance music. This time around is Dreamcast who are Davon Bryant in conjunction with Swedish guy Sasac aka King Al. "Liquid Deep" is sexy late night deep funk the way it was always intended and Bryant's smooth as silk vocals are just like... Wow! This is a fine fifth volume of edits from Sanctuary that tweak some timeless disco sounds for modern dance floors. There is a glorious sense of soul to 'Feelings' with its boogie-fied drums and soaring vocal harmonies perfectly ready to melt your heart. 'Get Away' is a harder edged cut with raw claps and lively rhythms all topped off with impassioned vocals. They finally back it up with more heat, and this one kicks off with an edit of legendary performer Emilio Santiago. The TropiCals duo flip his 'Revelacao' into a pure summer heater with squelchy synth bass and then Chillum Trio's 'Luuva Acida' is percolating and spaced out disco chugger. Cheb Aarab's 'Law Kan' gets an edit from Karl Planck which is all about the retro 80s chords and lush xylophone sounds and then Balint Boldizsar's 'Scarabeu' is an exotic and hypnotic deep disco snake charmer.

Review: For her latest trick, long-serving Canadian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ivana Santilli has decided to cover one of her favourite Level 42 tracks, 1983's 'Out of Sight, Out of Mind'. Her take, which includes additional lyrics she wrote especially, sits somewhere between glossy mid-80s soul and colourful boogie. It has a much more electrofunk and soul flavour than the British band's Brit-funk/jazz-funk original, which is no bad thing. B-side 'Air of Love' sees Santilli dip the tempo and charge towards the close-dance zone - all sparse, slow-motion Loose Ends beats, chiming synthesiser melodies, dreamy chords and her own impeccable, slow-burn lead vocals.

Review: 'Midnight Driver’ is the new single from London-based soft-rock, disco, and funk specialist Joel Sarakula. The track is a soft-rock fantasy in which the narrator laments his lover's nocturnal habits; Californian sun-kissed guitars, smooth vocal stylings, and Latin percussion all blend into a cinematic mood (and a great driving song). On the flipside is 'I'm Still Winning', a '70s disco-inspired track on which Sarakula is heard fully immersed in the shady underbelly of casinos and high-stakes gambling. Resembling a defiant riposte from the title character of The Eagles' 'Desperado', Sarakula sings with a vocal channeling '70s icons Boz Scaggs and Ned Doheny.

Review: On his new single 'Pacifico Waves', Joel Sarakula takes the scenic route down a pacific coastline, searching for peace, enlightenment and the perfect sunset. Travelling and searching is nothing new to Sarakula: it's almost his default way of being. Born and raised in Sydney, Australia before swapping oceans to live in the UK and more recently onwards to Gran Canaria: "I've been busy making my islands smaller" he jokes. But the music on 'Pacifico Waves' sounds like none of these places: with its easy drum shuffle, soulful guitar hooks and smooth vocal harmonies it distinctly evokes Southern California. It's such a potent portrait of the West Coast that if not for the contemporary lyrics and some modern production techniques, it could be a long lost hit from an early 80s LA studio band.

Review: Satin Finish started out as a trio of Goldsboro musicians namely Donald Oliver on keys, Joe Exum on drums and Dennis Kornegay on bass. They were all scouted to the Greenback Records label out of New Jersey by two producers by the names of George Greene and Gary D. Jackson. High school graduate Karen Scott was the band's vocalist and here she does a fine job across a pair of stunning and spine tingling cuts of soul drenched, mid tempo disco funk. 'Took A Chance On Love' has great harmonies and dancing keys to get you moving and 'Didn't Wanna Lose Your Love' is the more sentimental slow song for smoochy moments.

Review: Unidisc's 40th anniversary series, which offers fresh editions of sought-after disco and boogie hits, each accompanied by a new remix, continues. This time, they've decided to revisit Saturday Night Band's 'Come On Dance, Dance', which first surfaced on legendary NYC label Prelude way back in 1978. The chosen remixer this time round is Z Records chief Dave Lee, in pure 'Remixed With Love' mode. His EP-opening 'Disco Mix' is a genuine bomb that expertly rearranges and re-EQs the Saturday Night Band's original mix - with the odd dash of delay here and there - in true Tom Moulton style. He also delivers an excitable, largely beat-free 'Reprise' mix and a tidy, dancefloor dub style 'Instrumental'. A lightly edited take on the 1978 original mix completes an excellent package.

Review: XL Middleton is an absolute don of boogie. He can bend his synths and warp his baselines into fresh new forms and make sure than anyone who hears them has to pop their body non stop. He brings that studio mastery to a remix here of 'High Class' by Sauce Lady that is full of withering sci-fi pads, fresh vocal hooks and bright pads. His version is pretty unbeatable to be honest but on the flip the Slynk mix has a fine go of remixing it with a more upbeat and strident groove.

Her latest drop is a mix of city pop, boogie, r&b and disco with gorgeous metropolitan vibes, low lit chords and a killer bassline topped off with the poetic vocals. Next to the original comes an instrumental that's more paired back but no less emotional. An absolutely gorgeous single that will lighten up any party.

Review: Soul, disco, funk and boogie all combine to superb effect here on this new one from Savoir Faire on Miles Away. The A-side is a glorious two-stepper with Cassandra Wright's next-level vocals shining bright up top next to a deeper male vocal as the drums and funky bass unravel on 'Holding On.' Flip it over and the pace picks up but the soul remains high on 'You're The Best' which has a more yearning vibe and hip swinging claps next to lush strings and call and repose vocals over a squelchy boogie bassline. Super stuff.

Jim Spencer's 1979 attempt at foraying into disco 'Wrap Myself Up in Your Love' wasn't received amazingly at the time, but thanks to the adoration of archive label The Numero Group, the song has seen a resurgence in covers and fans. The original vocal is zany and expressive against some jangly funk guitars, whilst Say She She's rendition hones in on the sultry aspect of the track. Guitars are muted down to transform the song into a lovemaking slow jam, wind passages are introduced and the vocal is subtly powerful and sexy. This 7" contains both Spencer's original track and the interpretation by the trio, pressed on white vinyl.

Review: Schatzi is the edit label run by parent imprint Let's Play OHOuse in Brooklyn. This eighth volume of dance floor bombs is another essential one for those looking to light up the club. There is squelchy synth-funk on the international opener with its gorgeous backing vocals and lead Portuguese verses. Things get more stripped back and funky on 'Track 2' and elsewhere there is crunchy proto-electro, glossy, jazz-laced deep house groovers and slow motion, deep cut and playful electro-funk delights.

Review: A superb 12" slab of rare South London British jazz funk, originally released in the UK in 1984 by Jamaican-born producer Tony Williams, the man behind the seminal Funk Masters' jazz-funk masterpiece, 'Love Money'. Now heard again, 'Keep On Searching For Love' is emblematic of London's 80s dub disco sound, with its every constituent part recorded, arranged and processed to the discotheque-addict's letter. Gated snares and acapella croons abound, with the uplifting vocals of Linda Taylor shining as brilliantly as star at the peak of its supernova. The flipside instrumental, 'Eastern Lady', comes complete with hypnotic bassline, drum machines, synths and stabbing horn lines; both tracks have been lovingly remastered from tape and now come exquisitely repackaged for you to enjoy. Review: Enois Scroggins was an American funk and gospel singer from Tulsa, Oklakhoma who developed his own style that he called 'E-Funk'. He passed away in 2019 due to a heart attack, but his legacy certainly lives on, with French label Dd Lahouve Production reissuing some of his finest work here from back in 2012. The neon-lit boogie-down vibe of 'Under My Skin' (featuring Misty Lane) will get you moving with its proper west coast flavour - he was said to be based in Los Angeles for most of his career. On the flip, the low slung disco funk of 'Love Is You' (vocal) provides more reliable mood music.

Review: It was way back in 1977 when disco collective Seaquence made their debut on Aidqueen Records, a tiny, independent label based in their home city of San Diego, California. That debut, a delightful but extremely hard to find "45", has long been in demand amongst deep disco collectors, hence this timely reissue on Athens of the North. The real killer is A-side 'Disco Thing', a tight-but-freewheeling chunk of disco-funk piled high with alternate male/female vocals, loose-limbed drum-breaks, punchy horns, swooping strings and squelchy synth sounds. Original B-side 'Your Love' is a deeper and far sweeter affair - a traditional flipside slow jam that's as tear-jerking as it is effortlessly soulful.

Review: By the time "Touch Me In The Morning" was mailed out to American DJs in 1979, Marlena Shaw has long since established herself as one of soul music's greatest voices. "Touch Me In The Morning" was merely a promo-only affair, remixed from the shorter "Take A Bite" album version - but it did become something of a dancefloor anthem in certain underground clubs. Here, the sought-after 12" is given a replica reissue, with the stomping, string-drenched title track being accompanied by exactly the same B-side cuts as the '79 pressing.

Review: Slapping instrumental disco with an emphasis on phatness here, courtesy of the re-edit master Shuggy. Following up Volume 1, a monumental remix affair featuring vocal rethinks of Chaka Khan and the Fatback Band, Volume 2 here features a dry and immediately-gratifying version of Chic's 'I Want Your Love' on the A, and a similarly pacey and bass-licky B-side of a still unknown original with the initials 'B.P.C.' Review: Another example of a classic disco track being thrust into the modern age thanks to TikTok, Silk's 'I Can't Stop (Turning You On)' was recently flipped by LF System in 'Afraid to Feel', turning the slow-burning Philly soul bopper into a hyper-speed house banger. For fans of that original sample, being able to hear the sultry vocals of Debrah Henry being manipulated by bpm. The Philadelphia septet hit the nail square on the head with this sensual love make that is so detracted from it's descendant that you're about to have two new favourite songs.

Review: You'll struggle to find a more loved-up and life-affirming chunk of proto-disco brilliance than The Sisters Love's 1973 "Give Me Your Love". The record's lasting impact can be seen in the number of times that it's been reworked, re-edited or bootlegged over the years. Here it gets an official 7" reissue via Soul Brother Records. It sounds as good as ever, with the all-female group's now familiar vocals rising above Blaxploitation style guitars, fluttering flutes and powerful horns. It's a celebratory release, and then some. This time round it's accompanied by a lesser-known gem, "Try It, You'll Like It", which first featured on the B-side of a 1973 single. This is a powerful chunk of conscious funk/soul fusion of the sort that was incredibly popular during the period it was recorded.

Review: St Paul's Catholic Church in Louisiana was hosting a summer youth program in 1970 and 1971 and it was there that Tunnie Smith was spotted by Father George Artist, who saw potential in his great singing abilities. Smith was introduced to local musicians and bands as a result and was soon playing the local circuit. He landed a record label 18 months later and his first single came in 1973. Success followed as did an album that never actually got roasted. It was then in 1983 that he laid down the slow-burning mid-tempo soul numbers which feature in this 7" for the first time.

Review: Not to be confused with the independent funk and soul exhumers Strut Records, who were acquired by the !K7 monopoly in 2008, Strut Records (here recorded as Strutt) was a short-lived North Carolinian, now apparently resurrected, record label active in the early 1970s and exclusively dedicated to the work of the band the Soulfull Strutters. The Fayetteville octet drove a rousing bargain with the soul stomper 'Let Your Feelings Go', indeed seeming to incite the mass-reflexive impulse buy (and with no remorse) by entreating the listener to abandon all emotional valence and make a kind of Kierkegaardian leap of faith - not only into the void of love, but into a commitment to dancing and dancing well, as well as into copping the record. Review: Sultry street soul/R&B from two otherworldly underground names, intro'ing Vol. 1 of their 'Grown and Sexy Music' series. Sudi 'Space Ghost' Wachspress handles the production on these three swaying, sex-soul tidbits, while Teddy Bryant aka. Urbyne tops things off, adding melismatic croons to the affair. A-sider 'Heaven Sent' is a glistening, ecstatic exercise in digi-R&B moods, as Bryant sings of excited imaginations and loving fantasies. 'Little Bit Of Love' spices things up to a boom-bap flavour, with thoughts of neediness prevailing - of course, they just "need a little bit of your drug". 'Relax Your Mind', finally, ushers in a safe space / comedown after the high.
