  2. Evil Ways (instrumental) (2:58)
Review: Originally pressed (on a limited run) in 2013, LA Latin funk troupe Boogaloo Assassins have reissued these two spellbinding cover versions again due to public demand. Still on a highly limited run, both cuts need to be in your collection: Dawn Penn's "No No No" gets a strict samba switch with lavish percussion and consistent vocal harmonies throughout while Sonny Henry's "Evil Ways" (best known from its Santana cover) gets the dreamy instrumental treatment where the horns and glocks do the narrating over a tight bed of wood blocks, shakers and liquid Rhodes. Killer stuff and Juno is one of the few stores outside of USA which is carrying the 45. Don't Sleep !

Review: Another jewel for all the deep diggers out there produced by Calvin Arnold aka Billy Byrd - soul and funk singer, guitarist, songwriter and producer from Georgia, USA. "Lost In The Crowd" is a solid funk workout, featuring an intense rhythm and a powerful vocal. On the flip, there is a more chilled-out soul jam titled "Silly Kind Of Love" for the connoisseurs out there. Reissued due to public demand here on a nice great-sounding 45" by Vienna's always reliable Record Shack.

  1. One Step Ahead (2:34)
  2. I Can't Wait Until I See My Baby's Face (2:43)
Review: "One Step Ahead" by American soul singer Aretha Franklin was released by Columbia Records in 1965. The A-side of the single reached the Rhythm & Blues singles chart of the time and ranked at #18. On the flip, "I Can't Wait Until I See My Baby's Face" was taken from her 1964 album entitled Runnin' Out Of Fools. The single was released two years before Aretha achieved stardom when she joined Atlantic Records. The A side cut was not included on any of her Columbia studio albums and remains one of her rarest releases. The song has risen in familiarity due to its use in recent films, such as the music documentary Muscle Shoals and in the Academy Award winning drama Moonlight directed by Barry Jenkins.

Superbad (7")
Cat: TR 255. Rel: 11 Oct 18
  1. Superbad (3:50)
  2. Ma(r)l Sehen (3:16)
Review: Tramp Records has stayed close to home for this release, reissuing two killer cuts from the 1981 album "Mittwochs In Marl" album by Tyree Glenn Jr. While he is American - his father, Glenn senior, was famously Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong's trombonist - Glenn Jr had moved to Germany (where he still resides) around the time that the album was recorded. Lead cut "Superbad" is a genuinely heavy, full-throttle funk beast, with Glenn Jr doing his best James Brown impression over an insatiable groove and rousing sax solos. "Ma(r)l Sehen", on the other hand, is a much more breezy affair - an instrumental jazz-funk outing rich in dueling sax and electric piano solos.

Review: Two super rare takes on verified northern soul anthems from Tamla Motown singer/songwriting legend Brenda Holloway on Eight Mile: Her biggest track - a cover of Prince Philip Mitchell's "I'm So Happy" - is thrown down in true Tamla style with big orchestration and belting backing vocals while the highly sought after "Love Me For All The Right Reasons" digs deep in the heart with more of a contemporary soul touch. Heaven sent.

  1. You're Doing It With Her (When It Should Be With Me) (2:45)
  2. Cry Myself To Sleep (2:06)
Review: Rhetta Hughes (Los Angeles, California, November 9, 1953) is a R&B singer and actress. She starred in the Broadway musicals Dreamgirls, Don't Play Us Cheap and Amen Corner: for which she was nominated for a Tony Award in the category for Best Actress in a Musical in 1984. She also appeared in the films Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, The Wiz (as a member of the choir) as well as the film version of Don't Play Us Cheap. She was also seen in the TV version of the musical Purlie, and appeared in an episode of Law & Order. In addition, Hughes had two entries on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart including "Angel Man (G.A.)" which hit #1 in 1983. "You're Doing It With Her (When It Should Be With Me)" is the kind of soul classic that the late Amy Winehouse could have taken her cues from while "Cry Myself To Sleep" appears on the flip.

Review: In recent years we've become accustomed to disco compilations appearing at a furious rate. While many of these compilations are undoubtedly worthy of attention, the volume of releases can sometimes be bewildering. This eight track selection from Al Kent, the second in his Disco Love series, ticks all the right boxes, however. Even by the highest crate digging standards, these tracks are pretty obscure; many won't have had much of an airing since their original release. Those into the rich, soulful side of disco - that brand of string-laden dancefloor material most associated with the Philadelphia International label and studio -will find much to enjoy. Perhaps the most noteworthy is Scarborough's delightfully sweet "Make Love To You", an epic of biblical proportions that lasts longer than most drunken one night stands. See also Valerie Simmons' super sweet "I Can't Make It On My Own" and the rousing orchestral manoeuvres of "I've Got The Need". This luxurious gatefold double album also comes replete with extensive track notes from compiler Al Kent.

Review: A 45 suiting the funky northern soul sound, re-reissued here on a great sounding Record Shack release. Both highly sought after versions of "What I Did In The Street" featured here: from the raw and original Gulfstream label version, backed with the smoother, disco release that came later. Originally released in 1978 as a B side to Betty Padgett's "Tonight Is The Night", King was a Florida based vocalist and this terrific song was her sole release.

  2. Golden Shades (3:34)
Review: ATA founders, Neil Innes and Pete Williams, appear here under their collective The Magnificent Tape Band moniker, and serve up two ice-cold soul nuggets that'll rock any system from here to Sheffield. In fact, to bring in an extra element of Northern Soul funk, the Steel City's Rachel Modest features on the vocals of both "Patterns In My Mind", a slow-burning charmer of a tune with dangling melodies and a lo-fi touch, and also on the gorgeous, swingier groove of the majestic "Golden Shades". Two stunning hits that are bound to stay up here in the soul chart for a while.

  2. Love Book (2:33)
  3. Funky Jive (3:03)
Review: A welcome return to action for Stank Soul scalpel fiends Mako and Mr Bristow, whose last collaborative re-edit release dropped back in 2017. This time round they offer up a slimmed down seven-inch selection boasting two hot-to-trot revisions. On the A-side you'll find "Stax Dawg", a loving tribute to the legendary US label that sees the pair wrap 1960s horns, vocals and instrumentation around their own rubbery, floor-friendly groove. "Love Book", meanwhile, is arguably even better: a low-down revision of a horn-heavy funk-rock affair rich in addictive guitar riffs, bustling drums, heavy horns and gravelly blues style vocals. They round things off via flipside "Funky Jive", a tooled-up version of rhythm and blues standard "Willie and the Hand Jive" that should have everyone singing along in the club.

  1. I Try (4:26)
  2. Forbidden Love (4:27)
Review: Since 2003, Rachel Modest has been a fleeting presence. We're not happy about that. The soul vocalist has only sung over a handful of EPs, including one on Phil Weeks' Robsoul Recordings, and this new single is really her first solo appearance. Thanks to the young ATA label, we are graced with the majestic tones of "I Try", a powerful soul ballad that instantly cuts to the core and leaves you yearning for more. On the B-side, "Forbidden Love" is similarly seductive in its approach, but this time Modest's tactic is smoother, more contained and sexier. Whichever side you prefer, we think both are fantastic, and that this EP is a true gem among the contemporary soul releases. TIP!

Review: Strong spiritual funk from five-piece family troupe The New Creation; written in 1973 and released the following year on their own Salaam Recordings, "The Fish Song" is a classic Islamic story delivered with powerful harmonies and a vital positive groove while "Elijah Knows" brings both father and son Rasheed Shakoor Senior and Junior to the forefront for some powerful dulcet duelling as the pair feed off each other and explode into massive harmonies with the full group. Only 2500 OG copies were ever pressed and the band built up quite cult following in the mid-70s in LA. Thanks to Soul Junction, their tale lives on...

Review: Andy Stennett and Peter Maas' Freeez project was a pillar of both the pre-punk and punk scenes across the UK, with their infamous tracks surely having influenced a myriad of post-punkers thereafter. Aside from that, they also operated under the Pink Rhythm moniker, through which they released a limited selection of disco-not-disco and jazz-dance. Perfect for some reissue action right now. India was the second of the three EPs they released in 1985, now out through Be With, and the title track sounds like it hasn't aged a day since thanks to a subtly boogie approach filtered through a cold-wave stance. "Trust Me" a more sensual track, slower and more soulful, while the flipside's "More & More" storms through with a summery, blazed-out drum-machine anthem, followed by a sweet instrumental cut to "India". Ya need...

  1. I Found It All In You
  2. We Got A Thing (Going On)
Review: Atlanta soul duo The Trey J's were active on the live circuit for over 20 years, however they only ever release one 45 on Tee Gem Records. Now, thanks to Soul Junction, it's been realised and given the lease of live it truly deserves. "I Found It All In You" is a rocket-fuelled funk jam with big horns, belly-driven vocals and a chorus you simply can't not sing along to. Meanwhile on the B, "We Got A Thing (Going On)" is a much slower, more heartfelt composition that echoes with Otis level gravitas. Forty four years old and still resonating with power, this is one release you can't go without.

Review: Second time around for Volume 2 in the Shaolin Soul series, which first appeared in stores way back in 2002. Like its 1998 predecessor, the collection gathers together tracks sampled by compiler RZA and other members of the extended Wu-Tang Clan organization. As you'd expect, there's some absolute belters to be found across the 38-track double album, which also comes bundled with a CD containing the same tracks. Highlights come thick and fast and include the hard-spun ghetto soul of Baby Huey and the Baby Siterres' "Hard Times", the organ-heavy, heart-aching brilliance of Syl Johnson's "I Hate I Walked Away" and the low-slung, bluesy growl of Southside Movement's "I've Been Watching You".
