Review: This is the second part of Virgin Ubiquity: Unreleased Recordings 1976-1981 and is again packed with tracks that are far more than unreleased findings from the cutting room floor. Each one serves as another feather in the bow of the virtuoso Ayers, who combined jazz, funk, soul and disco in magical and unique ways throughout his career. In doing so he laid down a precursor to acid jazz and hip hop. These are tracks that show off his dynamic, liquid rhythm sections and mellifluous keys, as well as the vocal talents of a range of collaborators who touch on soaring and sensuous highs as well as more gravel and earthy lows. Essential.

  16. Cats 'N Girls (Cats 'N Boys re-sing)
Review: 'Swop' is the eagerly awaited 4th album from Club des Belugas, released on Chinchin. This beautifully produced cd comes packed with 16 stunning
jazz-flavoured tracks including 2 bonus tracks: a remix by the multi talented Tape Five and a re-sing (which means different lyrics and different melody
on the same musical playback) by London-based cool school jazz singer Iain Mackenzie. Starting with the voice of American jazz and soul singer Dean
Bowman (Blue Note Records) the 1st track sets the pace and style of the album, continuing into the sublime vocals of Swedish singer Anna-Luca (who
sings 5 tracks on 'Swop') titled 'It's A Beautiful Day'. Iain Mackenzie comes next (who sings on 3) with a great jazz number called 'Frankie'. The multi-award
winning Californian jazz impresario Brenda Boykin is back too on 4 tracks and not forgetting another first, a remix of Fred Astaire's 'Puttin on the Ritz'. Club
Des Belugas have stepped up to the plate and pulled out another hit album, with their tracks compiled on every illustrious compilation you can think of
(220 so far) like Stéphane Pompougnac's 'Hotel Costes', Jose Padilla's 'Man Ray', Claude Challe's 'Just Good Music', Saint Germain des Prés Café's
'Brazilectro' to name just a few and now their music is even being used on hit shows like 'So You Think You Can Dance' and TV series 'CSI Miami'/'CSI
New York' out in the USA, well, this album does it again! By the way, 'Swop' stands for 'SWing and pOP' or 'SWing and bebOP', whatever you prefer.

Review:
Strut re-kindle their involvement with one New York's most revered DJs and re-edit pioneers, Danny Krivit, with a fresh album of essential new, rare and classic re-works, past and resent.

As a producer, Krivit is the acknowledged "King Of The Edit" and has been a major influence on today's re-edit culture. From early classics like the 'Feelin' James' and 'Rock The House' JB cut-ups during the mid-'80s, he has released over 300 unique versions, often under the mysterious 'Mr. K' moniker. After releasing a batch of his finest edits on the 'Edits By Mr. K' compilation in 2003, Strut now delve back into the tape cupboard for an all-new edition, bringing together some of Krivit's secret weapons in a wide-ranging selection covering soulful disco, funk and jazz.

Review: You won't hear many albums as direct, hard hitting and confrontational as this: musing on the black experience, culture, identity, love and trauma, it is a spoken word and poetic masterclass from California born Tenesha The Wordsmith with production from Khalab. Jazz, electronic dance, afro rhythms, hip hop and broken beat all make up the grooves and beautifully frame the album's thundering truths and uncomfortable realities. At times intimate and personal, at others chest beating and empowering, it is an album that makes a lasting impact. "I hope your compassion for others grows," says Tenesha of listening to it, and surely it will.

Review: Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, Rainer Trueby compiled (or helped to compile) a string of Brazilian-focused compilations for his friends at Compost Records. It's perhaps surprising, then, that it's taken this long for him to get a chance to showcase some gems from his record collection. "Soulgliding" is as smooth, warm and glassy-eyed as you'd expect, with the German DJ/producer serving up a range of mostly obscure jazz-funk, soul-jazz, boogie and slow jam gems. Highlights are plentiful throughout, from the sparse-but-rich synth-soul of Patrice Rushen's "To Each His Own" and the sun-kissed shuffle of Bridge's "Next To Me", to the saccharine sweetness of Crystal Winds' "Lovers Holiday" and the low-slung jazz-funk bounce of "Memories Of Moments" by Demo Cates.
