Wasso (12")
Cat: MWB 007. Rel: 09 Jan 18
  1. Wasso (5:59)
  2. Wasso (Loya remix) (4:34)
  3. Wasso (Mr Boom Broken mix) (5:09)
  4. Wasso (Mr Boom Afro mix) (7:42)
Review: Baba Commandant and the Mandingo Band first came through on Sublime Frequencies, back in 2015, with a sublime LP that carried the ethereal sounds of contemporary Afro jazz. The outfit are back, this time on France's Mawimbi imprint, with a corker by the name of "Wasso". Taking inspiration from the school of Fela and Tony Allen, this is deep-minded funkiness with a political edge - a contemporary afrobeat killer! The remixes are no less intriguing, starting off with the electronic nuttiness of Loya's version, followed by the 'broken', beat-driven remix from Mr Boom, and even an Afro version. A done deal, in our opinion...

Superstudio (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: RK 45071. Rel: 25 Jan 18
  1. Superstudio (3:35)
  2. Gomma (3:57)
Review: Milan mystic funkateering five-piece Calibro 35 tease with two songs from their forthcoming album Decade. As always, expect full instrumental mischief as the long-haired gang duff us up with fast-paced, super-tight grooves laced with heady levels of cosmicity. "SuperStudio" is the entrance theme of your dreams. A big ballsy riff, full orchestration and a momentum that pushes you deep inside your favourite 70s movie. "Gomma" is straight up funk prog fusion with its warbling synths and big dark energetic waves. Bring on the album!

Gangster Boogie (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: DYNAM 7021. Rel: 16 Nov 18
  1. Gangster Boogie (4:11)
  2. Why Did You Do It (3:59)
Review: For their latest essential seven-inch single, the Dynamite Cuts crew has raided Chicago Gangsters' 1975 debut album, "Blind Over You". Neither of the two tracks on offer has been featured on a "45" before. On the A-side you'll find "Gangster Boogie", a seriously heavy, Clavinet and saxophone-laden funk wriggler whose snappy drum break has appeared on numerous hip-hop jams over the years (including LL Cool J's "Mama Said Knock You Out"). On the flip you'll find the even more riotous and life-affirming funk-rock masterpiece "Why Did You Do It". Rich in rasping horns, wild organ lines and gnarly guitar riffs, it's just crying out to be played loud over a heavy soundsystem.

Review: Although Kiwi keys-man Mark de Clive-Lowe is currently a producer and session musician in demand, he still somehow finds time to pursue a solo career. Earlier in the year he delivered the contemporary jazz/jazz-funk classic in waiting "Heritage", and here we're treated to its sequel (or, more accurately given the short gap between sets, companion album). It's another belter, with highlights including the outer-space jazz/live drum and bass fusion of "Bushido II", the string-laden dreaminess of "Ryugu-Jo", the atmospheric Jap-Jazz epic "Shitenno" and the slick downtempo jazz-funk warmth of "Mirai No Rekishi".

  3. RRRRRR (4:11)
  4. 25 (3:46)
Review: DJ Firmeza's 2015 debut, "Alma Do Meu Pai", was a gloriously bass-heavy, multi-cultural melting pot of 21st century dancefloor sounds that perfectly encapsulated the Lisbon scene from which he emerged. This belated sequel is equally as thrilling, with bombastic opener "Avan" setting the tone via heavy, Kuduro-influenced drums, layered tribal percussion hits, clonking melodies and urgent vocals. "Intenso" is if anything even sweatier and more percussively punchy, while "RRRRRR" is a thrusting chunk of wild tribal techno rich in dense drums and voodoo vocal yelps. As for "25", its another off-kilter drum workout just crying out for peak-time plays.

Review: Remarkably, two decades have now passed since the release of Endtroducing, DJ Shadow's peerless debut album. In way of celebration, Island has put together this expansive, six-disc "Endtrospective" edition. The original album - an atmospheric and hugely entertaining exploration of trip-hop, break-digging and the potential of sampling - still sounds unfeasibly brilliant all these years on. It's joined by two discs of bonus material; a first, containing previously released demos and live versions, and a second with all-new remixes from contemporary producers. There's plenty to get the pulse racing here, including a John Carpenter-influenced ambient rework of "Transmissions" by Kuedo, DJ Spinn's footwork-goes-jazz remix of "What Does Your Soul Look Like", and a sparkling Hudson Mohawke version of "Midnight In A Perfect World".

Review: For the latest volume in their crate-digging disco series, Under The Influence, Z Records has turned to long-serving British brothers Simon and Robin Lee AKA Faze Action. In keeping with the series' dusty-fingered ethos, there's plenty of brilliant rarities to set the pulse racing - see the smooth '80s boogie of Leston Paul's "All Nite Tonight", the up-tempo hustle of Oscar Perry's "Body Movements" - as well as a smattering of obscure versions of classic dancefloor hits (check Michele Claire's version of "In The Bush"). You'll also find a smattering of killer Faze Action edits, too, with their version of Midway's "Set It Out" and Mikki's freestyle-era boogie ham "Dance Lover" standing out.

Review: Recognised as one of the most prolific jazz pianists of all time, Herbie Hancock played with greats such as Donald Byrd and Miles Davis. He was one of the first to embrace and master the electric piano. He bounced back and forth between his electronic and acoustic sound, touching upon almost every development in R&B, funk and jazz while retaining an original and distinctive voice. Fat Albert Rotunda is the eighth album by Hancock, released in 1969 and his first release for Warner Bros. since his departure from Blue Note Records. The music was originally done for the TV show 'Hey, Hey, Hey, It's Fat Albert' and was a noticeable change in style - incorporating soul music as the basis of his compositions.

Review: Fast-rising New York soul singer Carlton Jumel Smith continues his successful partnership with Timmion house band Cold Diamond & Mink via a debut album that sounds like it could have been recorded in the early 1970s rather than 2019. Smith's lyrics and effortlessly soulful vocal delivery take centre stage throughout, though it's the faithfully fuzzy grooves, punchy horn lines and languid, delay-laden guitar motifs provided by his storied backing band that make the album a real winner. Highlights are plentiful throughout, from the loved-up sweetness of "This Is What Love Looks Like!" and Motown-influenced stomp of "We're All We Got", to the slack-tuned drum breaks and bittersweet messages of "I Can't Love You Anymore (feat Pratt)" and the cheery goodness of "Remember Me". In a word: superb.

Review: Afrosynth Records' latest must-have release comes from Mabuta, a Capetown-based collective headed up by jazz bassist and occasional electronic experimentalist Shane Cooper. "Welcome To This World" is naturally rooted in jazz, though it's spiritual movements and cosmic vibrations regularly include suitably intergalactic synth sounds and nods towards jazz-funk and Afro-beat. The latter influence comes to the fore on Buddy Wells collaboration "Log Out Shut Down", while the brilliantly out-there "Tafattala" wraps bustling, crashing jazz drums in mind-altering backwards instrumentation and Cooper's booming double bass. Mabuta is of course capable of providing good, old-fashioned laidback jazz moments, as the Cinematic Orchestra-esque "As We Drift Away" emphatically proves.

  1. I Want To Thank You (KON Shine Your Light remix) (7:54)
  2. I Want To Thank You (KON dub) (7:49)
Review: Having previously breathed new life into classic cuts from L.T.D, George Duke and Sylvester, Kon has now turned his attention to another all-time favourite: Alicia Myers' 1981 stunner "I Want To Thank You", a disco-era gospel-soul favourite that remains one of the era's most timeless club records. Working from the multi-track tapes, Kon teases out Myers' killer vocal - drenched in just the right amount of reverb and delay - atop a slightly stripped-back groove before giving it the full kitchen sink treatment. Just as good is the flipside Dub, which flits between beat-free sections and the track's killer groove in the manner of disco dubs from the early 1980s. The song itself may not have needed tampering with, but Kon's versions are genuinely superb.

Leading from the front with the cult classic "Tomorrow" we're treated to highlights such as the proto tropical house harmonies and layers of "I've Got A Friend", the shinier house-focused workout "In My Mind" and a disco dancehall shaker "Mina Ngilijaji". Tomorrow is a day that never comes... Don't sleep.

Review: Having not released anything for going on eight years, it's something of a surprise to see Pama International return to action. The all-star ska and reggae combo, whose line-up includes members of the Specials, Galliano and PWEI, amongst others, have decided to release a clutch of clear vinyl 7" singles all at the same time. "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" is typical of their output; an effortlessly sweet chunk of sun-kissed ska-soul fusion that sounds like it could have been recorded in Kingston, Jamaica at the turn of the sixties. Flipside "Gasoline", meanwhile, is a tasty instrumental reggae jam laden with bold Hammond organ motifs, jazzy guitar solos and heavyweight bass.
