Review: Art Blakey's greatest album with the Jazz Messengers is this one, Roots & Herbs, and it is probably one of his least well known. The 1961 line up of this famous jazz collective had the esteemed Lee Morgan on trumpet, with Jymie Merritt on bass, Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone and piano played by Bobby Timmons. It was of course laid down in the most famous studio of them all, Rudy Van Gelder's studio in New Jersey, and take sin six hard bp jams, the playful title track, and the superbly inventive 'United.' Get to know.

Review: North Carolina man Lee Fields is a storied singer who has had a long career, albeit with a number of big gaps. He's been in fine form in recent years though, turning out some vital albums that join the dots between sixties soul and the modern day sound. He's a regular on Big Crown Records now links with his band The Expressions once more to strike a timeless Motown vibe that is classy and classic. Big Crown Vaults Vol 1 features plenty more of his achingly gorgeous vocals over nice lo-fi rhythms and also includes instrumental versions of each cut.

Review: If you, like us, like to reach for seasonal records at this time of year but can't often find things that aren't too cheesy, then hold tight: Kelly Finnigan's second album is full of holiday sounds with members of Durand Jones & The Indications and The Dap-Kings helping her cook up a warming, fire-side soul sound that you'll have on repeat all December. Inspired by records like Phil Spector's A Christmas Gift For You, this is a lovely affair with heart swelling vocals, 60s sounding hooks and nice rolling rhythm that are perfectly gentle as background music, but also striking when you give them your full attention.

Review: Lee Morgan's The Sidewinder LP is actually a comeback record from one of Blue NOte's most regular and esteemed artists. A famously good hard bop trumpeter, he was a real master of his instrument who played with the Jazz Messengers as well as on his own, often as a tie man on various other fine Blue Note albums. This album came after he retuned to New York in late 1963 and was recorded with the up-and-coming Joe Henderson. It was an outlier to the rest of his catalogue and was a leftfield hit that was also used on a high-profile automobile ad campaign, thus helping to save the cash strapped Blue Note label itself.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Afrodesia may come on like another dusted down gem from those dedicated detectives at Best, but it is in fact a modern construction from the talented studio trysts of Mystic Jungle and Whodamanny from the Periodica camp. These Italian producers have more than proved their knack for crafting sublime, honey-smooth jams with a nod to the golden studio era of the 70s and 80s, and they're more than up to the task on this killer 12" of heavy funking jams with a dose of boogie and a nod to Ivory Coast disco. It's quite simply perfection, rendered with love and attention to detail, but utterly natural in its feel and flavour.

Jumping Off
Cat: JAL 345V. Rel: 03 Dec 20
  1. Jumping Off (3:17)
  2. Gather Around (3:23)
Review: Bristolian funkateers and confirmed party-rockers the Allergies have enjoyed a pretty prosperous 2020, with the release of their fourth studio album being followed by a string of singles - a number of which ending up riding high in the NACC US college radio sharts. 'Jumping Off', their final single of the year, is another intensely upbeat, club-ready affair, with regular mic man Andy Cooper (of Ugly Duckling fame) and a crew of female backing vocalists riding a bombastic, party-igniting groove that sits somewhere between hip-hop and deep funk. Flipside 'Gather Around', a bluesy, gospel-tinged stomper full of heady Hammond licks, jazzy bass and infectious verse vocals, is equally as potent.

Cat: TR 732. Rel: 03 Dec 20
  1. Sweet Thing (4:27)
  2. My Baby's Outta Sight (Amen!) (4:30)
Review: Some four years after making his debut with crossover soul gem 'Love Can Last Forever' - the first release on occasional Timmion Records offshoot Styleart, no less -Fred (real name Frederik Lof) finally returns for round two. This time, he's joined forces with Timmion's in-house revivalist 60s soul and funk band, Cold Diamond & Mink, who return to base following a surprise outing on San Francisco's Ubiqiuty Records. A-side 'Sweet Thing' lives up to its title, with Lof's slick, high-register vocals rising above a deliciously positive backing track rich in hazy horns, sweeping strings, and a nostalgic soul groove. Over on the flip you'll find instrumental number 'My Baby's Outta Sight', which appears to be a languid, vocal-free take on the sublime A-side.

Dreaming Our Lives Away
  1. Dreaming Our Lives Away (3:36)
  2. A Feeling Inside (4:22)
Review: In early 2019, Athens of the North put out a new edition of an obscure, private press modern soul album from 1976 by People's Pleasure with Alive & Well, an alias of a band better known for their 'World Full of People' 45 as Everyday People. This "45" boasts two tasty cuts from that set. On the A-side you'll find 'Dreaming Our Lives Away', a heady crossover soul/funk tune whose reverb-laden female vocals, punchy horn lines and tactile grooves should appeal to all serious '70s soul heads. Over on the flip you'll find starry-eyed, loved-up slow jam 'A Feeling Inside', a no less potent but far more laidback affair.

  2. Wake Me Up (2:29)
  3. For Too Long (4:27)
  4. Here To Luv Myself (4:26)
Review: By any standards, Samii's debut EP is extremely impressive. The previously unheard artist wrote and performed the songs herself, with production assistance and some musical contributions from 2000 Black core crew members Dego, Mr Mensah, Matt Lord and Kaidi Tatham. The result is a string of impressive songs that combine Samii's distinctive take on soul with elements of jazz-funk (see sublime opener 'Wake Me Out'), space funk (the bubbly, synth-laden excellence of 'Spaced Out Summer Tours & Back Again'), broken beat (the bustling, percussive, bass-heavy shuffle of 'For Too Long') and stripped-back, early '80s Brit-funk (weighty dancefloor workout 'Here to Luv Myself').

  1. Modernization (5:03)
  2. Hey There (4:48)
Review: Graham Luckhurst and Gary Johnson's picks for their reissue-focused Pressure Makes Diamonds label have thus far been top-notch, with the vast majority of chosen recordings being as essential as they are exceedingly rare. Here they deliver a much-needed new pressing - albeit in limited numbers - of Sons of the Kingdom's most sought-after double A-side. The Israel-based American group - members of the "Black Hebrew" movement of the period - originally recorded and released the brilliant modern soul/deep soul fusion cuts 'Modernization' and 'Hey There' in 1978, though the artwork on this reissue takes more cues from the former song's 1980 reissue on K.O.G. Both cuts are simply superb, so we'd suggest not hanging around if you want a copy.

Review: Ron Jefferson's Ron Jefferson Choir album was a commercial failure. But as any music lover knows, that doesn't say anything of its actual quality. The rather short lived-band led by New-York drummer Ron Jefferson got together in Paris in the mid sixties. He put out a solo album on Pacific Jazz in 1962, then made the trip for this album and earned his crust playing with popular pianists of the time such as Errol Parker or Hazel Scott. After a particular impressive show, Polydor asked Jefferson for this album. It came after a trip to Senegal that has clearly impacted on the rhythms and afro-eastern explorations.

It boasts a range of vintage cuts and more recent label treats, with highlights including the Northern Soul-inspired heat of 'Felony' by the Allergies, the soulful breakbeat sweetness of Kraak and Smaak's 'Squeeze Me (featuring Ben Westbeech)', the Latin funk-breaks business of Skeewiff's cheeky 'Soul Bossanova', the contemporary disco brilliance of Dimitri From Paris's tweak of Izo FitzRoy's 'I Want Magic', and the superb modern soul of Smoove & Turrell's 'Slow Down'.

Les Oiseaux Morts (reissue)
Cat: TV 017. Rel: 02 Dec 20
  1. Les Oiseaux Morts (3:08)
  2. Back To Life (2:51)
Review: This is a first ever reissue for this lovely little jazz 7", which first landed in 1976. It was recorded just after French jazz fusion group Cortex's iconic Troupeau Bleu LP and is awash with gentle drum tumbles, twinkling keys and sustained strong sounds that bring a golden touch. The female vocal harmonies are a perfect counter for the male spoken words and the whole thing really tugs at the heart. Flip it over and there is the much more upbeat 'Back to Life' with its busy harmonica, funky drumming and rippling Rhodes work. Fantastic stuff.

Cat: 22A 037. Rel: 02 Dec 20
  1. Cosmica Italiana (3:15)
  2. Nuda Sorgente (4:47)
Review: Lorenzo Morresi is an Italian DJ, producer and musician who now makes his debut on bristling London label 22a alongside the boss Tenderlonious. This 7" is an album sampler of Italian library inspired disco-funk that draws on the sound's 70s heyday. It was a shared love of this sound and this period that brought these two artists together having first played together at a gig in Italy in 2017. Having finally got together to record, they have mixed up contemporary analogue inspired arrangements and experimental, joyful, playful sounds that are as good at home as they will be on the 'floor. The album drops next year, and this is a fine taster.

You Don't Have To Worry (remastered)
  1. You Don't Have To Worry (edit) (2:42)
  2. Save Their Souls (edit) (5:00)
Review: The A-side of this tidy 7" is a remastered version of 1967's 'You Don't Have to Worry', a real lost soul classic that has been sampled by so many including 50cent, Common, Wu Tang Clan and Royce 5'9. It has killer vocals right off the bat and might be familiar to you even if you didn't know it, with its gentle beats and poised bass riffs. On the flip is Bohannon's 1973 classic 'Save Their Souls' all freshly remastered and re-edited. It's another popular sample source that has been mined by Jay Z, Large Professor, Musiq Soul child, Craig Mack, Jay Dilla and Pete Rock. It's a funk-filled tune that has carried its greatness through the ages and always strikes all the right notes.

Review: Earlier in 2020, Tenderlonious presented the first part of a very personal project: an EP of stunningly original fusions of jazz and traditional Pakistani and Indian music, which he recorded in Lahore last year with local "anything goes" quartet Jaubi. As the title suggests, this full-length excursion continues the journey, offering intoxicating 21st century ragas full of suspenseful held-note chords, exotic tabla rhythms, delay-laden instrumentation (guitars and brass instruments as well as Tenderlonious's trademark flute solos) and dreamy ambient textures. It's a unique and genuinely interesting set that somehow manages to be both ground-breaking and hugely entertaining. Don't sleep!

Ordinary Joe (reissue)
Cat: SEV 006. Rel: 01 Dec 20
  1. Terry Callier - "Ordinary Joe" (4:14)
  2. Jerry Butler - "Ordinary Joe" (3:26)
Review: On the latest edition of their excellent Soul Essentials series, Outta Sight has decided to bring together two versions of 'Ordinary Joe', a seemingly perennial favourite written by the late, great Terry Callier. His celebrated 1972 recording - all bold, sing-along choruses, organ stabs, jangling piano and lolloping grooves - breezes its way across side A, while Jerry Butler's earlier version, laid to tape in 1970, sits on side B. His version is much more expansive and musically detailed than Callier's take, with superb production from Gamble & Huff and some brilliant orchestral arrangements courtesy of Donny Hathaway. Both versions are, or course, incredible.

Reggae Dynamite Vol 2

  2. The Regulators - "Caymanas Park Rocket" (2:30)
  3. Melbourne Douglas - "Rude Boy Don't Fight" (2:50)
  4. King Deadly - "Joshua A Mek Riddim Run" (2:46)
Review: Having already delivered a multi-artist EP of Reggae Dynamite earlier in the year, nostalgia-fired producer Neil Anderson serves up a speedy sequel on his popular Original Gravity label. Toaster Melbourne Douglas kicks things off with the ska-flavoured cheeriness of 'Rudy Skanking on the Moon', before returning later in the EP with slowed-down, rocksteady style reggae fuzziness of 'Rude Boy Don't Fight'. Elsewhere, label regulars (sorry) the Regulators deliver a high-tempo, Hammond-heavy instrumental workout (the excellent 'Caymanas Park Rocket'), while King Deadly layers languid organ solos over a more dub-wise groove on EP standout 'Joshua a Mek Riddim Run'.

  1. The Labrats - "Boom Boom" (3:09)
  2. Curtis Baker & The Bravehearts - "Midnight In Memphis" (3:11)
Review: More nostalgic but on-point fare from producer Neil Anderson and his Original Gravity label, this time via an ultra-limited seven-inch single featuring two fuzzy slabs of revivalist rhythm and blues. The Labrats kick things off via a righteous and occasionally raucous cover of John Lee Hooker classic 'Boom Boom', where gnarled, Chuck Berry style guitar solos and gravelly vocals rise above a tooled-up but nevertheless faithful rendition of the much-loved song. Over on the flip, Curtis Baker and the Bravehearts breeze their way through a bluesy Anderson original, the slow-motion R&B grooves, razor-sharp blues guitars and extended organ solos of 'Midnight in Memphis'.

Don't Look Back In Anger
Cat: OGR 800. Rel: 01 Dec 20
  1. Don't Look Back In Anger (4:47)
  2. Love Is A Treasure (5:40)
Review: 2020 has been a hugely productive year for Neil Anderson, the vintage reggae, ska and soul loving producer behind the Original Gravity label. Here he rounds off the year via a new single from The Regulators, one of the label's most reliable revivalist reggae combos. The headline attraction here is undoubtedly the skanking cover of Oasis's Britpop smash 'Don't Look Back in Anger', which we're sure will annoy Noel Gallagher no end. Built around a rocksteady groove replete with trademark organ sounds and lazy trumpet and trombone solos, it's a cheeky but brilliantly executed cover. Over on the flip they deliver a more faithful cover of Freddie McKay's 1967 rocksteady standard 'Love is a Treasure'. It's good, but sadly lacks the A-side's "wow" factor.

When The Game Is Played On You
Cat: SS 7002P. Rel: 01 Dec 20
  1. When The Game Is Played On You (3:06)
  2. Kiss My Love Goodbye (3:19)
Review: Selectors Series won itself plenty of fans with a big reissue of Minnie Ripperton and now it's back with another vital 7" that takes you back to the heart of Philly at the peak of its soul and disco powers. Bettye Swann wrote these back in 1974 and put them out on Atlantic. The first gem is 'When the Game Is Played on You', a perfect soul number that is musically great but also carries a passionate message. The flip side is a much more smooth and seductive affair. 'Kiss My Love Goodbye' has stirring vocals that tug the heart strings from start to finish.

  6. Party Boat (4:10)
Review: Three years ago, Finnish nine-piece Kuja Orchestra delivered a superb album of funk-fuelled mutations of jazz, Afrobeat, Latin jazz, dub and psychedelic rock. It was rather good, though undoubtedly criminally overlooked. Happily, the DJ Doe-based outfit has finally returned to action via a delightfully positive and entertaining six-tracker on Jazzaggression. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the Afro-tinged, jazz-dance-friendly brilliance of 'Sauna Funk' and the warm jazz-funk flavours of 'Elevator Groove', to the rousing dancefloor hedonism of 'Kuja's Disco', and the fittingly titled fun of celebratory closing cut 'Party Boat'. From start to finish, the collective combines superb grooves with some seriously good solos and horn arrangements.

Rare Grooves Volume 2
  1. Lou Courtney - "Hey Joyce" (2:46)
  2. Johnnie Taylor - "Just The One (I've Been Looking For )" (2:42)
Review: This essential 45 brings together two hard-to-find cuts that have long been popular amongst rare groove dancers and dusty-fingered hip-hop DJs/beat-makers. On side A you'll find Cut Chemist fave 'Hey Joyce', a rare 1967 single from soul man Lou Courtney. Featuring a rasping, impassioned lead vocal from Courtney, sweet female backing vocals and the kind of semi-stomping beat that's so beloved by Northern Soul heads, it's a real must-have treat. Over on the flip you'll find Johnnie Taylor's more relaxed - but no less passionate - 'Just The One I've Been Looking For', a 1966 Stax B-side that remains a fine example of warming Southern Soul.

  4. Hello To The Wind (Hugo LX Purple mix) (7:15)
Review: Seven years ago, United Future Organisation founder member Toshio Matsuura pitched up on Blue Note with his (then) latest future jazz collective, HEX. The resultant album's highlights included a fine cover of Joe Chambers' song 'Hello to the Wind' featuring lead vocals from Cinematic Orchestra member Grey Reverend. Here the track returns, this time in evocative and occasionally dancefloor-friendly new forms. Matsuura offers two unheard takes on side A: the blissful ambient style 'Starry Version' - all acoustic guitars and mountain stream electronics - and the jazzy, stripped-back 'Z Groove' instrumental. Over on the flip Parisian producer Hugo LX takes over, delivering two superb late-night house takes that sit somewhere between atmospheric deep house and bass-heavy Chicago jack.

Review: Tropical Disco are back, with Moodena inaugurating a new series called Collectors Edition. This first one is an awesome various artists EP, packed full of fine disco edit delights. Up first is label co-owner Moodena taking over the A side with the bass-driven soul funk of 'The Rattlesnake & The Ant', which will hypnotise you with its infectious groove.
