Review: Somewhat surprisingly, the infamous 'remix' version of Pharoahe Monch's 1999 classic 'Simon Says', featuring verses from Method Man, Redman and Busta Rhymes amongst others, has only previously appeared on promo CDs and compilations. Here the track finally gets its vinyl debut, 22 years after it was recorded. It's a superb crew cut, with all involved making an impact on the mic over a stripped-back but heavy beat full of deep bass, spy-funk horn blasts and raw rock guitar riffs. This time round, it comes backed by the instrumental version of 'Simon Says', which is simplicity personified.

Review: Dal Platinum is back once again like a reneged master. His last outings on the fantastic Breakbeat Paradise Recordings came in the form of a remix and a huge Powerhour free download and now he comes correct on a new 7". He kicks off by bringing some crashing breakbeats and funky drumming to a hip-hop classic on 'Breath & Strut', while the melodies are full of soul. On the reverse is a much sunnier sound - 'Peace Dust' is driven by a big bassline with some nice organ stabs and a fiery vocal leading the vibes up top.

Following the release of their collaborative new album Pluto X Baby Pluto and its deluxe version comes this 7" of one of its finest tunes. Review: For the latest edition in their ongoing series of golden-era hip-hop seven-inch reissues, Mr Bongo is taking us back to 1992 and Positive K's biggest hit - the 500,000-selling ode to unrequited love, "I Got A Man". Lyrically impressive, with the Bronx mic man delivering both male and "female" rap parts (the latter via voice-changing studio trickery), the song owes its success in part to a beat that makes great use of a funky loop from A Taste of Honey's "Rescue Me", which famously also formed the backbone of Funky Four + 1's early hip-hop classic "That's The Joint". Over on the flip you'll find the hazier and jazzier "SHakin", whose killer beat boasts judicious lifts from tracks by Wade Marcus and the D.O.C. In a word: essential.

An instant floor filler, thanks to its Taste Of Honey sample, K's chancing and chirpsing still hit with playful cheek and vibe that reminds us he did indeed have the skills to pay the bills. Review: Potatohead People's classic tune 'What It Feels Like' featuring T3 (Slum Village), Kapok and Illa J, first released in 2020 alongside an unmatched live video, gets not only a reissue on vinyl here but a remix treatment from in-demand bass player Carrtoons. Switching up the order of the verses, dubbing out the horns and adding in his signature basswork, Carrtoons brings a fresh flavour to the track's already steaming, boom-bap verve. Review: Rocafort Records took a trip to LA last summer to meet Dan Ubick, a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and DJ who is also an original member of Breakestra and founding member of reggae bands The Lions and Night Owls. They decided to hook up on this project which he devised as a couple of instrumentals which then changed form and became the Brazilian-inspired hip-hop sounds you can hear on this 7". Percussion player Bobby Easton, singer Diana Purim and Sadat X from NYC's Brand Nubian also helped add some extra colour.

Review: Breakbeat Paradise invites back onto their island once more for a tenth volume of the on going Toxic Funk series. This is another vital 45rpm for DJs which will blow up any spot with b-boy sounds and edgy breaks. 'Hang On The City' offers up some tightly woven in, Kendrick-like bars while on the flip, 'The Funk Is Yours' is a more coruscated and disco tinged tune with a searing bassline and mid tempo drum loops as well as retro rap vocals and lively yelps.

Review: A couple of straight-up hip-hop legends are brought together on this new one from the Originals label, which deals in classics of the genre in 7" format. Q-Tip's truly sone cold 'Breathe & Stop' is up first with its wigging basslines and crispy drum breaks The bars up top are smooth as you like and oft-sampled. Flip it over for the Redman joint 'Smash Sumthin'' with its splashy cymbals and hard-hitting drums underpinned by menacing bass and crowds of 'murder.' Delightfully dark and both well worth having in the collection in this format.

Review: Before Queen Latifah was a household name as an actress and singer, she was one of the most well-respected and popular names in New York hip-hop, collaborating with everyone from De LA Soul to Coldcut. 'Ladies First' turned out to be her first hit in a long line of successful singles for the queen. Featuring a vocal appearance from another legend in Monie Love and produced by the highly famed but recently passed away Mark Howard James aka 'The 45 King', this release has an even more special meaning. Review: DJ Soopasoul's last mash-up was an inspired affair that saw him perfectly fuse tracks by Philadelphia Soul legends MFSB and the Beastie Boys. Here he takes a similar approach, placing the rap vocals from the 1995 hip hop classic "How High" atop a suitably funky, lolloping beat crafted from Clavinet-heavy sections from Stevie party-starting floor-heater "Superstitioun". It works remarkably well on the A-side vocal mix, and those who'd not heard either track would be convinced that there was no mash-up antics going on. Over on side B you'll find an instrumental mix that showcases Soopasoul's editing skills; minus the Hip Hop vocals, is a fine re-edit of the Wonderful jam.

Review: More gold from the always in the know and on point 5 Boroughs label. Again here it digs into the vast annals of hip-hop history to come up with some still relevant gems in the form of Rakim and DJ Premier's staple 'It's Been a Long Time.' It is a classic boom-bap joint with lush strings and horns, some old-school scratching and cool bars. As walls, the label serves it up alongside the original sample source on the flip which is Cecil Holmes's languid soul slow burner 'Call Me, Come Back Home'. Review: This clear vinyl "45" dips into the small but perfectly formed mid '90s catalogue of Oakland duo Rappin' Ron and Ant Diddly Dog, whose take on gangsta rap was more laidback and melodfious than some of their contemporaries. 'All Rapped Up', which first surfaced as the pair's debut single in 1994, combines a luscious, laidback, jazz-funk-sampling boom-bap beat with typically descriptive, entertaining lyrics detailing life on the streets of the pair's home city. Over on the reverse you'll find original flipside 'Smoke Season', here presented in extended form. Lyrically it covers similar territory, but musically it's an unashamed G-funk workout full of rubbery bass, smooth synths and P-funk influenced motifs.

Review: Danno is the renegade master of Roman hip-hop and is part of the pioneering underground crew Colle Der Fomento. The Rebels instrumentals form the basis of his rhymes here while New York hip hop duo The Good People also appear on track two, 'Body Rockin', to bring some classic US styles to this package. Their tune is then remixed by another Italian hip hop legend on Ice One. This then is a package that brings together two different worlds, one more well known than the other for its hip hop, but the Italian team really do represent here and the whole thing fits together like two sides of the same NYC subway line.

Review: Bump'n'Grind has served up some serious heat across its first few 7"s and for this new one it taps into the fertile ground where hip-hop, funk, r&b, soul and boogie all intersect. The tunes are lovely and lo-fi with roughhewn analogue edges and a dusty vibe that is immediately appealing. Reggie B is the man behind them and first up he says 'Get Some Love' feat LeeLee A Stanwyck & Marcus Machado - its rich in dazzling chords and Prince style funk with catchy as hell vocals.
