Canopic Jar
Canopic Jar (limited green vinyl 12")
Cat: BF 119GREEN. Rel: 29 Oct 21
Journey To The Crystal Tomb (0:29)
Canopic Jar (5:27)
Canopic Jar (instrumental) (5:33)
Canopic Jar (acappella) (3:58)
Review: Brainfeeder serves up this new 12" from Hiatus Kaiyote which finds them diving ever deeper into their own idiosyncratic world of jazzy electronics and expansive grooves. The Australian funk outfit has been nominated twice for a Grammy and their Mood Valiant album was critically acclaimed by all. The pick of this limited green vinyl is the title track 'Canopic Jar' with its lurching beats, twisted guitars and stained lead vocal. It comes as an instrumental and an Capella while the opener 'Journey To The Crystal Tomb' is a short but sweet passage of haunting ambient.

Fo Yo Mind (feat Tykopaatti) (2:45)
Knock Out (3:26)
Review: Hillside & Matulah is a Helsinki based instrumental duo composed of Risto Kumpulainen (keys) and Janne Mathlin (drums & percussion) who mix various genres with their own unique style. Here they present their block rockin' jam titled 'Fo Yo Mind' featuring the lyrics of rapper Tykopaatti, who is part of the Finnish hip-hop collective Joku Roti Mafia. Over on the flip, they go for a completely different tempo on the psych-rock/acid jazz crossover of 'Knock Out'. As well as their usual project, Kumpulainen & Mathlin are known for collaborating with several homegrown blues, rock and soul artists.

Shawty Dont Play (5:24)
Review: Dolfin keeps it as classy as ever with this floaty new 12" from Ben Hixon and Stefan Ringer, two quality operators if ever there were some. They offer up just one cut on this single-sided slab of wax but a fine one it is too - the dusty drums have a certain heaviness to them while the wispy pads and noodling bass lines keep you suspended in mid-air. The seductive vocals bring a hip-hop energy to the deepest of grooves and ensure this one is going to get some emotions flowing when dropped in the small hours of the night in a cosy back room.

P Diddy & The Family - "Bad Boy For Life" (4:10)
J-kwon - "Tipsy" (4:02)
Review: Home Hitters deliver another back-to-back reissue 7", this time pitting together two classic but under-sung essentials from hip-hop's Official Canon (TM). On the A, we hear Puff Daddy and the Family's 'Bad Boy For Life', a crunchy, stark, minimal throwback to the rapper and businessman's comeup era. Then comes the tastefully-chosen 'Tipsy' by J-Kwon, a classic just as replete with handclaps and stomps, in authentic drunken crunk fashion.

Shamrocks & Shenanigans (Butch Vig mix)
Shamrocks & Shenanigans (Salaam main pass)
Put Your Head Out (LP version)
Review: With the likes of 'Jump Around' on its track listing, House of Pain's 'Shamrocks And Shenanigans' (Boom Shalock Lock Boom)
had crossover effect. Potential a-plenty, funky rhythms and quick rapping for the hip-hoppers, hooky melodies for the pop kids
and enough hard edge and cocksure swagger to get more open-minded rockers interested. Classic party banger alert.

What Now
What Now (orange splattered vinyl 7")
Cat: 100014 0195. Rel: 13 Dec 23
What Now (3:34)
Meditation (feat Ramona Reid & Ann Sensing) (3:54)
Review: The upcoming second solo studio album by US singer-songwriter and guitarist Brittany Howard (of Alabama Shakes fame), What Now follows up Jaime and its Reimagined edition, striking out with a fierce, "truest and bluest", nigh "brutal" lyricism, in which Howard addresses the titular question - "what now?" - and how today's society might respond. Written, of course, during the height of the pandemic, when such doubts were excised and up in the air (and more so than usual), the album's sonic aesthetic spans full-bodied funk, psychedelic chord progressions, and a powerful bombast. The overall answer sounds to be: move through it; surrender to "the now", gracefully.

Careless (2:23)
Review: Philadelphia rapper Dark Lo is currently out on bail. He faces nine years in prison for witness intimidation but that hasn't stopped him serving up this new full length, the aptly titled Borrowed Time. It's been produced by Harry Fraud and the nine tracks come with decent guest spots from Detroit's Body James and AR-aB. The music is personal and story-telling, a mix of both calmness and aggression and an underlying authenticity. Lo has also teased four other albums he's currently working on, but to beat this one will take some going.

Review: Based in Bristol, Habitus is a beat-maker, rapper and DJ from the Canary Islands. "Mind De Sample" is his debut album and it's really rather good. Featuring dusty, sample-heavy beats reminiscent of some of the greats (Dilla and DJ Premier, who both mined the hazier end of funk, soul and jazz spectrum) and an impressive cast-list of Spanish and British MCs (Verb T, Goose, Chillman, Res One, Datkid, Sadomas, Holly Flo Lightly, Emblema, Talia, Dr Syntax, Mac Lloyd and Bill Next all feature), it's the kind of laidback, soulful and sunny set that should warm the heart of anyone who appreciates quality underground hip-hop.

The End Of The World (6:42)
Review: Hak Baker's debut album is a socially and politically charged one, that represents the war in his own mind as well as "the culture war on the streets of London and the individual battles of his community." The sound is a spin on mid-00s indie with cheeky chappy vibes and scruffy pop hooks. Earnest cuts like 'Bricks In The Wall' and 'Run' sit with more angsty cuts like 'DOOLALLY (Unreleased)'. Baker has made waves in the last year with sets at Glastonbury, on Jools Holland and BBC's new Eastbank site. The year ahead brings UK and Germany tours and no doubt many more fans off the back of this record.

Review: The Half Dead Organization was a short-lived rap group from Houston, Texas. The dropped just one album and one EP but for hardcore rap fans they are real classics. The original label was Johnny Palmer Entertainment but now it is Most Wanted that drop this reissue of the seminal self titled debut. It's a record that goes big on the gangsta sounds with hard hitting bars and beats and plenty of old school scratching and samples. It has aged well and though it has plenty of nostalgia it still stands up all these many years later.

Review: Jack Harlow really seemed to break through with his last album Come Home the Kids Miss You in 2022 and now the American is back. He has plenty of flack for being a white kid rapper but for us that is way off the mark - he has some serious skills in terms of delivery but also world play and lyrical wit. The last album was a youthful one full of crushes, partying and the pressures of being someone. This new album is frustratingly short but chock full of soulful loops and boom-bap beats that keep you coming back for more. Lyrically he engages with social issues and his own place in the rap game while addressing the wider issues of hip hop appropriation. We love it.

Review: The Madlib Invazion Music Library Series was created by Madlib and Egon over the course of the Pandemic, and was a chance to give their creative friends the ability to stretch out and indulge in whatever type of music they wanted for release on the label. The music had to be great and able to be presented as a standalone album, just like the best 'Music Library' releases of the past, be they on labels like Italy's Sermi, Germany's Bruton, France's MP2000 and the UK's DeWolfe. And, like those albums, it had to work as easy, one-stop clearance for background cues in film and television production and, as producers have been indulging since the 1990s, for sampling. Joe Harrison's top-up to the series is just one of many, and brings a heated, undeniably infectious array of instrumentals to the table, all of which we're sure will be put to good use in the decades to come.

Review: Shay Hazan's new album Wusul is an intoxicating escape into his own rich musical heritage. The Israeli musician skilfully blends traditional Middle Eastern sounds with contemporary electronic elements to create a great and seamless fusion of past and present. Tracks like 'Sunflowers' (feat Nitai Hershkovits) and 'A Walk In Dir El-Assad' enchant with their hypnotic rhythms and haunting melodies, transporting listeners to distant landscapes. Hazan's masterful use of instrumentation, including oud (a lute-like fretless string instrument) and percussion, adds depth and authenticity to the compositions so that each track unfolds like a story, inviting you to immerse yourself in the luxurious arrangements. All in all, a captivating exploration of cultural heritage and modern innovation.

Review: D.I.R.T. stands for 'Da Incredible Rap Team' and it is a gritty masterpiece from Heltah Skeltah that epitomises hardcore East Coast rap. Released in 2008, this sophomore album from the Brooklyn duo should sit right up there with earlier peers like Jeru The Damaga such is its lyrical prowess and razor-sharp delivery over haunting production. Sean Price and Rock deliver relentless bars filled with streetwise wisdom and unapologetic bravado that paint vivid pictures of urban life. With guest appearances from fellow Boot Camp Clik members and production from renowned beatmakers like Marco Polo and 9th Wonder, D.I.R.T. is a relentless onslaught of raw lyricism and head-nodding beats.

Review: Almost 20 years have passed since Australian duo's debut LP Alleys To Valleys landed in our collections. Now we see these valleys from the flip perspective as they creatively scale us to the very summit of Mirror Mountain, their most ambitious body of work so far. Sitting somewhere between Booka Shade, Four Tet and Chemical Brothers, there's a vibrancy and energy that they've only ever hinted at before. From the soaring euphoria of 'Promises' to the emotional, cinematic breaks of 'Golden Hour' and the gentle lament of 'Tides Of Time', the pair weave a beguiling narrative through their work that really brings the album to life. Stunning.

Review: The spirit of ghetto tech looms large over this full length offering from duo Hi Tech, surfacing on Omar S' FXHE label. That said, the usual straight forward pumped up booty bouncing beats that the genre flaunts are left well behind by an eclectic and well constructed trip across the rhythmic spectrum. 'Milf Milo' is one of the more regular sounding jams, riding a relatively conventional house/garage production, but elsewhere elements of trap, hip-hop, techno, footwork and electro all influence the genuinely innovative and original frameworks. Even better, the cleverness of the arrangements doesn't lessen the alarmingly thuggish timestretched and over-autotuned vocals, giving us the best of both worlds.

Review: Memphis crew Three 6 Mafia are one of the most vital forces in Southern rap, still reigning supreme more than 30 years since they formed. Back in 2000 they helped define the sound orbiting the group and their label with the Hypnotise Camp Posse compilation, bringing in all their different collaborations and configurations and other MCs riding on beats from DJ Paul and Juicy J. Gangsta Boo especially shines on the likes of 'We Ain't Playin' while Lord Infamous tears it up on 'Don't Make Me Kill'. This is the real deal, from the razor-sharp beats to the deadly flows from the extended Three 6 family, now pressed up on a double 12" with an insert.
