Cat: OC 009. Rel: 20 Apr 22
  1. A Tribe Called Quest - "Sucka Nigga" (4:03)
  2. Jack Wilkins - "Red Clay" (4:03)
Review: We're big fans of these educational 7"s that often crop up, with a legendary hip hop jam on one side and the source of some its samples appearing on the flip. This time out we get A Tribe Called Quest's deep cut 'Sucka N***a' - which is taken from their legendary Midnight Marauders album - with its buttery rhymes and funky bass buried deep within. Jack Wilkins's 'Red Clay' on the flip isn't that much of a deviation. Though it's slower and free from the rhymes, it is a brilliantly effective and emotive cut. More like this please.

  3. Hot Pursuit (3:10)
  4. Jerry's Groove (1:30)
Review: Andy Cooper is best known for being a part of the Californian hip hop group Ugly Duckling. But he recently stepped out on his own to put out his Hot Off The Chopping Block album. Now, his Oonops label picks out their favourite joints from it for this tasty little 7" pressed on recycled black wax. Out kicks off with the old school breaks and freewheeling Rhodes chords of 'Goin All Out' complete with retro verses. 'Blood, Sweat and Soul' is another classically inclined beat with snippets of James Brown's wordless noises and warm organs. 'Hot Pursuit' goes big on the basslines and 'Jerry's Goove' closes with some, well, country influences.

Cat: HPR 22. Rel: 19 Apr 22
  1. Groove Is In The Heart (2:57)
  2. U Know What's Up (3:12)
Review: DJ Nu-Mark brings the skills once again with his latest 7". The acclaimed DJ and producer mixes up funk, dance and hip hop here and with Lonely Boy offers a fresh new take on a well known Deee-Lite classic. The trombone form the original is well suited to ape the original whole; the vocals remain intact as broad brass sounds and big fat drums all add weight and power. Flip it over and you will find a new version of another stone cold great - Donell Jones' 'U Know What's Up'. Here it becomes a shiny synth pop cover with vocoder vocals.

Cat: F HPR 17. Rel: 11 Apr 22
  1. Pass The Courvoisier (feat Full Crate) (3:20)
  2. It's Bigger Than Hip-Hop (3:29)
Review: This one flew off the shelves so quickly, it's back in stock for a reissue in the very same year in which it was first released. Hot Plate Records owner and former Jurassic 5 DJ, Nu Mark, is no less prolific when it comes to his solo material, exercising his ability to draw in impromptu supergroups for mesmerising funk one-offs. For 'Pass The Courvoisier', Nu Mark enlisted a boorish band of fellow musicians, including Full Crate and Hassan Miniawa, to take the reigns on a strange selection of international instruments - from oud, to flugelhorn, to straws and nay - for an odd yet no less beguiling Pharrell Williams cover. On this reissue, though, it's revealed another cover was born of the same session: a X interpretation of Dead Prez' 'It's Bigger Than Hip-Hop'.

I Wonna Know
Cat: SCR 704. Rel: 04 May 22
  1. I Wonna Know (Eddie C 7 Inch Disco mixx) (4:03)
  2. Rendez-Vous (Eddie C 7 Inch Disko dubb) (4:02)
Review: Eddie C met fellow Berlin-based artist LJ Simon a couple of years back. The pair bonded over their joint love of "boogie-funk" (as Soul Clap put it) and soon the Canadian was in the studio remixing a couple of Simon's collaborations with vocalist Idriss. Now presented on this "45" as a vinyl-only release, those two mixes are well worth checking. On side A you'll find 'I Wonna Know' [sic], a delicious fusion of Soul II Soul style street soul, tactile boogie synths and grandiose orchestral disco samples topped off by a fine lead vocal. The flipside dub of 'Rendez-Vous' is arguably even better - a jaunty boogie-reggae affair piled high with colourful synth sounds, echoing vocal snippets and toe-tapping beats.

Signature Funk
Signature Funk (white vinyl 7" limited to 200 copies)
Cat: HHE SENSEI. Rel: 12 May 22
  1. Signature Funk (2:42)
  2. Signature Funk (DJ Crucial SP 1200 remix) (2:59)
Review: Newark's El Da Sensei first came up with Artifacts alongside Tame One in the mid 90s, but he soon struck out solo with a career that's yielded countless fresh LPs and EPs right up to today. Signature Funk first dropped in the US via Jim's Pool Room and F5 Records, and now it's available in Europe thanks to Belgian label Hip Hop Enterprise. It's a classic slice of boom bap hip-hop for the old-skool heads, and as well as the Capo-produced original you can enjoy DJ Crucial's 'SP 1200 Remix' on the B side for more of those crunchy-as-hell beats backing up Sensei's flow.

Cat: HOMEHIT 010. Rel: 13 May 22
  1. Estelle - "American Boy" (feat Kanye West) (4:03)
  2. Kanye West - "Stronger" (4:09)
Review: Yezzir! Home Hitters deliver a cheeky 45 and we let it past our floodgates for the sole reason that it's a KW reissue. This one consists of two tunes from the self-proclaimed god's backlog that we didn't think were very likely to be found together on a singular slice of wax. Estelle's 'American Boy' occupies the A side .Meanwhile, 'Stronger' backs up the B, reinforcing it with its instantly-recognizable Daft Punk sample and crude pop drum beats.

Cat: FDR 7003. Rel: 05 Apr 22
  1. Gotta Get Mine (4:05)
  2. Take A Look (4:36)
Review: The Funky Dividends label is all about preserving and celebrating a range of classic tunes from cornerstone genres like hip hop, funk and r&b. Its latest careful vinyl outing is this limited 7" with two hip hop cut from Infinite. These came first time around in the mid-nineties when Infinite was knocking it out of the park with his storytelling rhymes. He was an underground star who grew up in a low income area in Toronto and used that to power his potent bars. He released only a couple of tunes but these two are his most notable.

  1. J Scienide & Daringer - "Piranhas" (3:07)
  2. J Scienide - "Why Even Try?" (2:10)
Review: J Scienide is an MC-producer on the rise, coming with a touch which will chime with fans of MF Doom and the like. Think dusty soundtrack hooks and crunchy drums, subtly off-kilter but undoubtedly true-skool. On this new single on his own Static Kings label, he's linked up with Daringer for the killer 'Piranhas', which leans in on a cold-chillin' nightmare beat to get the darkest Mobb Deep production looking over its shoulder. On the flip, Scienide flies solo for 'Why Even Try', a funked up drop with that East Coast edge where it counts.

This Beat
This Beat (hand-stamped 7")
Cat: VINDIG 499. Rel: 28 Apr 22
  1. This Beat (3:44)
  2. Ba Dada (2:50)
Review: The Jazzual Suspects's 'This Beat' is an ice cold and classic hip-hop cut that sampled Jack Kerouac's "The Beat Generation." IN the near decade since it first dropped it has remained a popular joint for beat lovers and now it makes it to its own 7" vinyl. A-side 'This Beat' is a loungey vibe with jazzy keys and spoken word vocals adding mood. The flip side cut 'Ba Dada' is just as smooth and laidback, with a funky little melody and louche boom-bap drums.

Cat: WTTW 002. Rel: 11 May 22
  1. More Action (3:31)
  2. Clouds (3:43)
  3. Dancehall Private Party (2:35)
  4. Strictly Bouncin (2:07)
Review: The inaugural reals on Word To The Wise from Mah'Mood sold out in quick time. It was a super way to kick off the label and now the second EP six or so months later is just as good. It's a deep house exploration from Sebastiao Loopes that opens with a languid groove and some freeform synth work. The energy is pent up and the bass bulbous. The grocers cut from from easy characterisation after that with the downbeat and stonier sounds of 'Clouds' and lurching beat structures of 'Dancehall Private Party' before closer 'Strictly Bouncin' rounds out on a lazy and swaggering groove that slowly lifts you off your feet.

Cat: BOTW 005. Rel: 07 Apr 22
  1. Suits You (4:20)
  2. Overnight (Dancefloor mix) (4:19)
Review: Manchester soul outfit Lovescene's debut 7" on Band on the Wall is a stunner. 'Suits You' kick off in heart rending fashion, with swopping neo-soul vocals, wooden hits jazzy drums that hit deep. It's a beautiful tune for late night lovers, On the flip is something totally different. 'Overnight' (Dancefloor mix) is an upbeat house cut with nice clipped drums, a subtle sense of garage skip and some more aching vocals up top. This is surely the start of something great from this outfit

  3. Ti Amo (1:58)
  4. Lost In Translation (2:34)
Review: Powerhouse US hip hop label Cold Busted has been serving up the beats to keep us on our feet for what seems like ever. Taking the reins here is MTBRD who hails from the UK and is a prolific studio hand. His take on the high-flying Jet Set series from Cold Busted is a glorious one with four soulful and well-constructed tunes that will appeal to his ever goring fan base. This one comes on the heels of his well-received Damn Fine LP last year and offers heavy boom-bap on the opener, shimmering electric piano on 'So Long' and cinematic design on 'Ti Amo' before infectious vocals define closer 'Lost In Translation.'

  1. In Rotation (2:17)
  2. Cuban Delirium (1:54)
  3. Palm Dreams (2:31)
  4. Copacabana Sand (2:15)
Review: Cold Busted has long been setting the standard for hip hop and instrumental goodness. As well as serving up the latest in their Jet Set series this month, they also invite Belgian beatmaker and fine sonic journeyman Sim Nagai to make an entry into the same much-loved series. 'In Rotation' opens with funky drumming and pitch-shifted guitar licks before Latin flavours wash over 'Cuban Delirium,' a deeper beat with reverential pianos. There is a pure beachside bliss to 'Palm Dreams' with its tumbling drums and hits and languid vocal samples and 'Copacabana Sand' completes the trip with a nice shuffling beat and some gorgeous acoustic string work.

  1. Nautilus (4:53)
  2. We Live In Brooklyn Baby (4:40)
Review: Nautilus are a supremely talented jazz funk group from Japan who channel their devotion to all manner of rare grooves into some utterly exquisite tunes. They released their debut album in 2015 on Palette Sounds, and now one of the lead singles has been repressed for the heads. It comprises two cover versions - one of Bob James' 'Nautilus' and the other of Roy Ayers' 'We Live In Brooklyn Baby'. Both cuts stay true to the original masterpieces while letting the players gifts shine through in understated ways. The album was scarce on its initial release so don't expect these to hang around for long.

Nothing EP
Cat: FS 09NTH. Rel: 16 May 22
  1. Nothing But A Heartache (3:09)
  2. Nothing Gonna Change (His Way) (3:10)
Review: Paul Sitter's Funky Shit Edits series strides to a ninth release here with more of what it says on the tin. The a-side is a reworked 60s banger with new drums bringing extra heft and heat and a slightly different arrangement. It's a b-boy breaker that will pack the floor. Flip it over for something rather different on the B-side in the form of a more calming and pensive song originally from 70s but here with an all new arrangement. 'Nothing Gonna Change (His Way)' is a deep cut tune for those later get togethers.

Cat: FS 09NTHPICSLEEVE. Rel: 16 May 22
  1. Nothing But A Heartache (3:10)
  2. Nothing Gonna Change (His Way) (3:08)
Review: Russian turntablist-turned-producer Paul Sitter is back once again with another of his tidy 7"s. This is another one that packs a real punch with a couple of hard hitting b-boy breaks packed with original soul and raw funk. 'Nothing But A Heartache' is the a-side with a Northern Soul vocal busting out of the mix, tambourines bring a sixties feel and the whole hitting nerve quits so is sure to get the floor rocking. On the flipside, 'Nothing Gonna Change (His Way)' is a little slower, the drums more leggy and the vibes a bit deeper for those more sensuous dances.

Review: Red Astaire aka Freddie Cruger is a legend in the beat making scene. He has been dropping his well crafted bombs for many years in both 7" and LP format on the House Of Godis label. His mighty Biggest for the Needy series is his most iconic work but after his Biggest Instrumental album proved he was still in fine form he now impresses again with this fresh Bounce 2 Da Beatbox on 7". Review: As far as contemporary drummers go, Richard Spaven is one of the most sought-after. He is master of progressive and contemporary sounds who has played with all the greats such as Jose James, Gregory Porter, Flying Lotus and The Cinematic Orchestra. He got sit alone here on this new 7" for Fine Line. Opener 'Hoodie Beats' shows off his considerable skills with an airy, floaty grove that is like live and deep drum & bass, then neo-soul vocalists Jordan Rakei joins for the superb 'Nova.'
Barney Artist drops some verses on 'Icarus '88' to bring a real edge and the title track closes in seductive fashion with lingering chords melting your heart.

Review: Urban Discos continue to stake their claim forebearers of Japan's electronic underground, this time releasing a new split J-funky, neo-soul single from Spice Rhythm as proof. The project, consisting off bassist Mitsuta Mori and drummer Shunsuke Uehara, here deliver their first 7", 'Without U' and 'Sozo'. Guest vocals are provided by stars Miri, Go and Hanah Spring, blending the "warm smell of coffee" with trilling la's, slapping funk instrumentals, and easily slick progressions. This is contentment in musical form; we hope it assuages your anxieties as it does ours.

Review: The Record Store Day drops are coming in thick and fast now and for hip-hop fans this is a heavy one. Neither of these tunes have ever been on a 45 rpm together before. They are classics from the legendary Philly crew with hard breaks and headier bars on 'My Part Of Town' set over a jostling bassline and tough hits. On the flip is 'Mountain's World' which is a deeper and more vibes-joint with less in your face energy and a smarter wordplay as well as some super scratch-work.

Review: Buffalo rap icon WestsideGunn gets the reissue treatment courtesy of Hoffstein on this tidy 7", which brings the DJ Daringer-produced 'Rolack's' back in reach. On the A side we get the vocal and instrumental, which finds the man known as Alvin Worthy flowing in his distinctive, tightly-wound style over a warm and soulful beat from Daringer. The instrumental lets the beatsmith's cuts fly, and there's plenty of them. On the flip things get darker as 'Over Gold' strikes a noirish tone before 'Free Ike Free Kiki' slows down and freaks out in a haze of low-slung brilliance.

Review: Small hole un-dinked version of a stone cold hip hop classic gets pressed one side of wax and its main sample source is on the other. Full disclosure - The Wu Tang Clan's 'CREAM"' is one of our favourite tunes from the band - or any hip hop outfit - and probably a large part of that is down to the aching, dark soul strings and piano sample that just rolls and rolls. It will never tire. The Charmel's tune 'As Long As I Have You' is a brilliant piece of heart aching soul with strings and keys that are just as effective.

Review: 99 Posse's 1998 album Cerco Tiempo is a golden era hip hop classic with nods to ghetto, drum & bass and reggae. The collective from Naples were active from 1991 until 2005, then reformed in 2009 but this album remains their benchmark. Most of the group's songs deal with political or social issues, and they are considered to be left-wing hardliners who rap in both Italian as well as local Naples dialect, making them fairly unique. The tuns all cut deep lyrically as well as musically and this one gets pressed up to limited heavyweight and yellow vinyl.
