  1. DJ Peech - "Visions"
  2. Jack Lagoon - "Lookin' At U"
  3. Lucky Lime - "Lucky Lime"
  4. Themis - "Crast"
Review: First volume of house tracks picked from the Velocet catalogue, Nail's previous label, which he ran very badly between 1995 and 1997. Most of the unsold, OG copies now lay in his ex-wife's cellar, covered in mushrooms.
300 on clear vinyl, no repress.

Shag Edits Volume 4
Cat: RFBR 009. Rel: 21 Jul 14
  1. David Glass - "Tape Deck" (Jamie Trench edit)
  2. Timmy P - "Feel It"
  3. Two's Tones - "Long Time"
Review: The SHAG Edits hits Volume 4 welcoming David Glass, Timmy P and Two's Tones to the Roots For Bloom roster. David brings a big hitter with Tape Deck with its MC sampled vocal, Timmy's is drenched in sunshine for all the day parties this is sure to go off at and Two's Tones takes things on a jazz twist, with clever sampling but always that underlying groove that the Roots For Bloom label is known for. Fans of the previous releases wont be dissapointed.

Cat: TW 15. Rel: 03 Nov 14
  1. Gizzy The Fox
  2. Gizzy The Fox (Scott Frazer remix)
  3. Gizzy The Fox (Coyote Lysergic remix)
  4. Sitting To Win
Review: limited 12" 180g records, single press, individually numbered, no repress, no digital with reDICKulous artwork hand 'crafted' by the man behind the label.
Tusk says, "The title track from TW15 was conceived after a particular heavy Tusk Wax label party at Renate in Berlin. I went back to my old pal PORK INTL's place for a bit of drunk studio time and told him all about the living legend that is Gizzy the Fox. A couple of bottles of wine later and I was telling the story to a microphone and we were writing an oddity of a track. If you have had the pleasure to meet Gizzy and spend time in Renate you might understand the lyrics, if not, they'll probably just sound like the rantings of a drunk man, funny that."

Down Off Cooper (incl. Lance DeSardi & CLE remixes)
  1. Down Off Cooper
  2. Where's City Boy?
  3. Down Off Cooper (Lance DeSardi & Cle remix)
Review: For Legwork's first outing, we've recruited a seminal techno-soul producer from Dallas, Texas, who prefers to stay in the shadows, remaining nameless(ish). That said, anyone who's serious about Detroit techno know's his work on Matrix, Down Low, and most receintly Delsin. On Remix duty are fellow Dallas alumnus Lance DeSardi, head honcho at Legwork, and DJ Cle, the hardest massaging man in house music.
A1. Down Off Cooper If this bassline doesn't hook you, check your pulse. Add some twisting and sliding pads to relentless machine-funked rhythms, and Robert's your mother's brother.
A2: Where's Cityboy? The perfect complimentary tune to Down Off Cooper, this one's slightly deeper, while still keeping the drum patterns moving and bass rumbling enough for the most discerning of dance floors.
B1: Down Off Cooper (Lance De Sardi & Cle Remix) Lance & Cle take Down Off Cooper to a more House-oriented dimension, never losing the techno soul of the original. The extra vocal snippet reminescent of classic M.A.W. dubs or Global Communication shoots this one into space.

The Palmer Park Project
Cat: TSUBA 075. Rel: 29 Oct 14
  1. Mid-Nite Madd-Ness
  2. Holiday
  3. One Track Mind
Review: A long and distinguished recording career for the always faithful Norm Talley has been lacking something Tsuba shapes until now, so kudos to Kev Griffiths for coaxing three drops of powerfully deep and danceable house from the Westside Detroiter. Each track here offers a different mood with A-side cut "Mid-Nite Madd-Ness" the peak time burner with classically Detroit house styled cymbal clashes cuing breakdowns, while vamping chords ascend and descend. "Holiday" is the warmer summer house jam with woozy Rhodes on loop, while "One Track Mind" is deep and rhythmic with a sultry vocal to boot.

The Reworks
The Reworks (limited black & yellow vinyl 10")
Cat: LANDEDREC 0106. Rel: 08 May 14
  1. The Reworks (part 1)
  2. The Reworks (part 2)
Review: With Landed marking one of the recent high points in an illustrious career for Detroit producer Norm Talley, the man himself returns to Landed to examine lead track "Travlin" with a pair of revisions that showcase different outcomes with the confines of slender, refined deep house. "Part 1" takes a dubby path, anchored by a hypnotic chord pattern while the beat ticks away in an unfussy manner. "Part 2" is the more sublime turn though, paring things down even more with a thoroughly minimal set of drums and a wonderfully hypnotic melodic tone undulating throughout. For a classy set of stripped down house shakers, look no further.

Nightshift (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: KF 007. Rel: 02 Feb 15
  1. Nightshift
  2. The Morning After
  3. Nightshift (Soft Rocks Acid Fuzz remix)
Review: Heavy release from newcomer therarelowry on the Soft Rocks 'Kinfolk'imprint. 'Nightshift' is a meandering acid tinged trance-dancer with a nord-esque bassline under pinning it.'The Morning After' goes on a heavier route but the mournful strings keep it on the light side of the dark with great intensity. On the flip side Soft Rocks take the 'Nightshift' into their specially designed 'acid fuzz' room to deliver a pounding percussion filled remix....all trax are receiving support from the Alfos duo of Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnston.

7th Heaven: Tribute To The Energy Of Frankie Knuckles
Cat: EB 004. Rel: 17 Nov 14
  1. 7th Heaven
Review: The sad passing of Frankie Knuckles earlier this year hit many people hard, not least fellow Chicago legend Ron Trent. The Prescription Records co-founder and all-round deep house legend has previously spoken about how he owes his career to the one-time Warehouse resident and here pays tribute to him in musical form. "7th Heaven" is as warm, loving and emotion-rich as you'd expect, with Trent layering his trademark keys, pads and melodies over a classic, Knuckles-style groove. It's the kind of wide-eyed loveliness that Knuckles himself would have been proud of making, and there's no greater tribute than that.

Wanna Dance
Cat: LFR 006. Rel: 08 Sep 20
  1. Wanna Dance (7:04)
  2. Wanna Dance (Moondance Hi-Tech mix) (6:24)
  3. Wanna Dance (EVM128 remix) (4:29)
Review: 'Wanna Dance' is the new jam by deep house heavyweight Sean McCabe (Good Vibrations) and Last Forever chief Turbojazz. Said to be conceived during the lockdown period, the track recalls the energy of classic Detroit deep house and even features one of the city's favourite voices in the form of Javonntte. On the flip, the spiritual vibe of Moondance's rework calls to mind the work of Motor City legend Alton Miller, while EVM128 aka Evermean Beats really soaks up the vibe of his new hometown - London - on his nu-jazz broken beat perspective that would make even Kaidi Tatham stand up and notice.

Wolf EP 15
  1. James Welsh - "NOwt" (Ron Basejam remix part 01)
  2. Squarehead & Mella Dee - "Get Together"
  3. Waze & Odyssey - "Feel My Voices"
  4. Terrence Pearce - "Magic"
Review: Arriving at a fifteenth 12" release in little more than three years is no mean feat, and the Wolf Music crew have retained a standard of quality throughout that a few other labels could learn from. Once again switching the emphasis from artist release to a quartet of contributors, WOLF 15 opens with a killer Ron Basejam refix of recent Wolf anthem "Nowt" by James Welsh. Originally a louche slice of beatdown, "Nowt" stays at an even tempo in the hands of the Crazy P artist though there are all new levels of seductive funk added. Complementing this are three label debuts of varying style but equal quality, with Squarehead & Mella Dee (one half of Mista Men no less) opting for a brazen concoction of ruffed up garage rhythms and deep house emotions on "Get Together". On the flip breakout house duo Waze & Odyssey add Wolf to their growing CV with the effervescent cut up house rowdiness of "Feel My Voices" whilst South African producer Terrence Pearce might just steal our affections with the skippy, smudged delights of "Magic".

  17. Unknown - "#001"
  18. Max Mohr - "Old Song"
  19. Mara TK - "Run"
  20. Samo DJ - "Tai Po Kau"
Review: John Talabot joins the likes of Scuba, James Holden and Motor City Drum Ensemble to contribute to the long running DJ-Kicks mix series that's deftly proved there's still mileage in the commercially released Mix CD despite this podcast heavy age we live. The usual double LP edition culls ten cuts from the weighty 27 track mix which the Hivern Disc lad has described as "not an easy mix. It's quite strange". If you've seen Talabot DJ you know the Barcelona based artist digs deep and that's represented well on these ten cuts, with Andy Stott's lurching take on Maps and the similarly minded Tempel Rytmik ( the new project from Talabot and Alexander 'Genius of Time' Berg) contrasting nicely with the more effervescent house from Axel Boman, MCDE and Paradise's Deep Groove. Kudos too for the inclusion of Samo DJ's "Tai Po Kau"!

  10. Fetsum - "Waiting For You" (Paskal & Urban Absolutes remix)
Review: The last few years has seen an increase in interest in what many have dubbed "slow house", but what Rainer Truby is calling "slouse"; atmospheric deep house that ranges in tempo from the low-90s to around 115 BPM. If you're still unsure as to what this all means, this compilation from the former nu-jazz maestro should fill in the gaps. There are many examples of the micro-genre at its' best, from the piano-laden sweetness of Maurice Fulton's rare remix of Alice Smith's "Love Endeavour" and the smothering chords of Sello's decidedly tactile "Lovely Flies", to the near horizontal Balearic ambience-meets-soft focus deep house of Eckoclick's picturesque rework of Bambooman's "Sun".
