To The Ocean Floor (hand-stamped 12" + sticker)
Cat: MOJUBA 027. Rel: 01 Oct 18
  1. To The Ocean Floor (11:19)
  2. Dreaming Of Paradise (6:39)
  3. Dreaming Of Paradise (Oracy Leaving Eden dub) (9:26)
Review: Fresh from Utrecht, Blue Closet makes his debut on Mojuba with two startling originals; "To The Ocean Floor" lives up to its name with big pad washes and beats that shuffle like an old Rolando joint. Immersive and captivating, it's the perfect set opener that allows you to take any direction you wish. Flip for "Dreaming Of Paradise", a yearning, barbed soul cut that's reminiscent of Lee Burridge 15 years ago but at around half the tempo. Powerful and dreamy, it's complemented by a bubbling version from Oracy that blows Closet's doors off. More please, Bluey.

  4. Fulham Broadway (6:07)
Review: London-based deep house producer and occasional Morrissey lookalike Joe Corti made his debut back in 2015, but has been surprisingly quiet since then. Happily, Better Listen has given him the opportunity to re-invigorate his career via a first ever appearance on vinyl. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the bold, ear-catching bassline, "Get a Move On" style drums and disco-funk party samples of "Special People", to the spiraling disco-house heaviness of "Thinkin". Elsewhere, he peppers an Afro-house groove with swirling Afrobeat samples on "Fela" and brilliantly cuts-up a lesser-known version of a genuine disco classic on the rubbery release of "Fulham Broadway".

  1. Peace Bird (8:37)
  2. Smiling Into Eternity (6:45)
  3. Rymd01 (6:20)
Review: The Swedish deep house duo of Alexander Berg (Dorisburg) and Nils Krogh (Arkajo) aka Genius Of Time are back outside of their established Aniara imprint for the second time on Running Back since 2014's Juno Jam EP. It has been a long time between drinks, with Krogh pursuing some great solo stuff as Arkajo and Berg performing in Sebastian Mullaert's Circle Of Live. This terrific new EP features the bittersweet "Peace Bird" that follows through with warm Rhodes keys, woody percussion and an all-round lo-slung swagger. The spacey and understated "Smiling Into Eternity" follows through on the B side, followed by the reduced and emotive disco of "Rymd01". Great stuff once again by the Gothenburg-based duo.

  1. Unlimited Sky (feat Sarignia Bonfa & Glenn Underground) (7:49)
  2. Kamakuras (6:50)
  3. Unlimited Sky (Patrice Scott remix) (7:24)
  4. Andromeda (4:42)
Review: 2017 marks ten years since Jesus Gonsev dropped his first 12" on House Cafe Music. To celebrate a decade in the game, the producer returns with his first solo single since 2014. He's managed to rope in some high profile mates to lend a hand, too. First Glenn Underground and vocalist Sarignia Bonfa help turn soft-focus deep house shuffler "Unlimited Sky" into a deliciously glassy-eyed fusion of twinkling vibraphone solos and starry synthesizer flourishes, before remixer Patrice Scott breaks up the beats and turns the same track into a breezy blend of broken house and modern soul. Also worth checking is "Kamakrus", an attractive Chicago jack-track smothered in dreamy chords, and the spaced-out downtempo oddness of "Andromeda".

  1. Butt-Head (8:00)
  2. People That Make The Music (8:23)
  3. Thinking Of You (4:56)
Review: The inimitable Matthew Herbert presents some much needed reissues from the Phono back catalogue's 'Parts' series here, on Accidental's third volume of remastered classics. The series was part of an early wave of exploratory dance music, that paved the way for a style of deep house that still works its magic on dancefloors some 25 years later. Featuring the reduced boompty-funk of "Butt-Head" or "Thinking Of You" which will no doubt appeal to the new generation of minimal heads, to moments of sublime and evocative deepness as heard on "People That Make The Music" which is up there with other such classics like "See You On Monday" and many others featured in upcoming editions.

  2. Right Around The Corner (6:33)
  3. Human Nature (7:11)
  4. Human Nature (Trinidadian Deep remix) (7:59)
Review: After a three-year hiatus, deep house stalwart Jenifa Mayanja returns to action with a four-track EP that effortlessly explores the more spiritual side of the style. Mayanja's Ugandan heritage is referenced on the deep, evocative, soft focus, Afro-house opener "Even In The Darkness We See", before she layers up rich Rhodes chords, dreamy pads and broken rhythms on the similarly luscious "Right Around The Corner". Flip for the classic U.S deep house - think Ron Trent, Chez Damier etc. - of "Human Nature", and the sultry, sun-bright, calypso-influenced Trinidadian Deep rework of the same track.

Essential Plates Vol 1 (smoke grey vinyl 10")
Cat: DAS 012SE. Rel: 14 Dec 15
  1. Optimum (8:18)
  2. Destination (with Jrod Indigo) (6:12)
Review: Although most house and techno heads know him under a variety of different pseudonyms, Anthony Nicholson has been releasing smoking tunes since the 1990's for labels such as the mighty Prescription, on which he used to call himself African Blues. He's back in 2015 under his birth name, and he's landed on the lovely DeepartSounds, a home to artists such as Dubbyman, Giorgio Luceri, and the one like Ron Trent! On the A-side, "Optimum" fills your soul with a soothing array of gentle house swings, powered by sublime vocals and mid piano keys; the flipside is "Destination", and it's a funkier sort of tune, one that is a little less deep and little more disco. Beautiful house music for those looking for meditative gear.

Review: Scottish producer Ross McMillan aka Carlos Nilmmns has for nearly two decades been releasing on well-known electronic music labels. His most notable tracks can be found on labels like Planet E Communications, TRAX Records, King Street Sounds, Circus Company and Character. He returns to Ornaments with another slice of artful songwriting, ranging from classic deep house ("Blue Room"), Detroit inspired techno ("Efflorescence") and cavernous dub techno ("Iris"), through to acid inflected grooves as heard on "Older Wiser", New York style downbeat jazz of "Copa" and stunning soundtracks like on "December In New York"

  3. Acting Crazy (edit) (3:59)
Review: At the third release on their deep house division Basic Channel keeps introducing new singers. Paul St Hilaire brings in a refreshing reggae flavour to the rather classic deep house set-up. The main vocal mix one A-side is allied with an instrumental on the B-side that reminiscent of Maurizio or Basic Channel releases.

  1. Pharmacy
  2. Hydlide
  3. Leg Man
Review: Will Bankhead's Trilogy Tapes imprint continues their assault on 2012 with the latest release of Tuff Sherm - an alias of TTT regular Dro Carey. Sitting nicely alongside the KM/MM and Willie Burns releases on TTT this year, the Pharmacy EP showcases a sound that is part raw techno, part submerged house; the title track combines rolling tom-heavy percussion with abrasive unprocessed synth tones, like Drexciya jamming with Kassem Mosse. On the flip, "Hydlide" makes things even murkier, with some abstract beatdown house that would give Madteo a run for his money, while "Leg Man" is another trip down the wormhole of abstract loops and minimal clockwork rhythms. We probably don't need to tell you, but this is another essential 12" from TTT!

Stallions (12")
Cat: DAS 019. Rel: 28 Jun 17
  1. Stallions (8:05)
  2. Stallions (instrumental) (8:04)
Review: Zurich based deepArtsounds is a promising young label that has previously brought us the likes of T.C. White, Jenifa Mayanja of Underground Quality through to legends such as Ron Trent and Anthony Nicholson of Prescription Records fame. When you consider that some of the scene's finest purveyors of modern day deepness such as Baaz, The Mountain People and Eli Verveine (to name but a few) all hail from Zurich too.. there must be something in the water! Deep and boompty/feelgood soulful business from the finest of The Windy City's second wave here: none other than Glenn Underground and Boo Williams, who are it again on the super sweet "Stallions" which is eight minutes of pure bliss so check it out! There's a bit of house (mainly) merged with disco and latin vibes all working in perfect harmony. The instrumental version on the flip foregoes those lovely Latin vocals for those who aren't really feeling them: your loss!

  1. Luke Vibert - "Africable" (4:38)
  2. Clap! Clap! - "Kulira" (3:55)
  3. With You - "No Resistance" (5:07)
Review: Beating Heart has shared the late Hugh Tracey's archive at the International Library of African Music (ILAM) with contemporary producers and keeping in line with Tracey's vision, all proceeds will be used to assist people in the areas where the music was originally recorded. This time, Warp Records and all round UK electronica legend Luke Vibert gives us the delightful oddball groove that is "Africable", Italian DJ Clap! Clap! Gives us the African polyrhythms via Detroit high-tech soul on "Kulira" while Los Angeles duo With You give us the sublime "No Resistance". Each 1500 albums sold will feed a school of 500 forever! Support a great cause and feed your ears with some wonderful music while you're at it.

  1. Interlace Jitter (7:31)
  2. Sparkling (6:09)
  3. Motion Capture (7:24)
  4. Motion Beats (4:42)
Review: You can always depend on Berlin imprint Mojuba for quality deepness. Sven Weisemann has been a longtime staple of the label and presents his new four tracker. "Interface Jitter" gets things off to a flying start with its catchy melody offset by a tough and shuffling rhythm. He then serves up some proper and utterly sublime early '90s ambient house stylings on "Sparkling". On the flip is "Motion Capture", getting back into the emotive deepness with smooth melodies, dark chords and nice splashes of dub chords for added drama. The dub version "Motion Beats" gets well funky by comparison!

Detroit Red EP (1-sided 12")
Cat: ARTLESS 2202. Rel: 20 Dec 07
  1. Beyond The Means
  2. Exhibition
Review: This time the Mojuba sublabel brings us the second part of the 'Detroit' series by the label owner Don Williams himself. This one-sided
record features two fine examples of music inspired by the city of D. The first one is a pumping, peak-time cut to hit the dancefloors with
and might become an essential tool for the ambitious DJ. The second track convinces in its very own character, providing a feeling that
many will recognize from the early years of techno, when this music was connected to the listener in a more deep and emotional way.
