  3. Discrete Class (6:17)
Review: Romanian Native Bog has had a great run of releases of late on some of electronic music's most compelling labels, including Crosstown Rebels, Bedrock and Diynamic. He has steadily forged his reputation as one to watch. Following his contribution to Adana Twins' Watergate 25 compilation, he returns to the esteemed Berlin label - this time teaming up with exciting new vocal-led French trio LKF Project (Sapiens/Atlant). "Her Song" is a pop-inflected and evocative deep house anthem for the main room - you can expect to hear this a lot in 2019. This is backed up by the tension and suspense of "Discrete Class" that's sure to fuel those heads down moments under the strobelight.

  1. Pharmacy
  2. Hydlide
  3. Leg Man
Review: Will Bankhead's Trilogy Tapes imprint continues their assault on 2012 with the latest release of Tuff Sherm - an alias of TTT regular Dro Carey. Sitting nicely alongside the KM/MM and Willie Burns releases on TTT this year, the Pharmacy EP showcases a sound that is part raw techno, part submerged house; the title track combines rolling tom-heavy percussion with abrasive unprocessed synth tones, like Drexciya jamming with Kassem Mosse. On the flip, "Hydlide" makes things even murkier, with some abstract beatdown house that would give Madteo a run for his money, while "Leg Man" is another trip down the wormhole of abstract loops and minimal clockwork rhythms. We probably don't need to tell you, but this is another essential 12" from TTT!

  2. Zipacon
  3. More Problem
  4. Crazy Spirit
Review: The boy Naples hooks up with Bankhead again for what looks and sounds like a sequel to last year's much loved El Portal 12" for The Trilogy Tapes. Apparently named in honour of the hospitable reception young Anthony received whilst playing a party in the Columbian town of Zipacon, this four track release opens with "Perron" which sounds like previous Naples hit "Busy Signal" hollowed out. From here, "Zipacon" feels like a real high point with fizzing, intricate drum patterns and a warbling pad line that really captivates. Flipside cut "More Problem" offers a undeniably booming interlude before Naples gets really bugged out on the excellent "Crazy Spirit".

Review: It's amazing to think that Jay Daniel is still only 25. Since making his debut five years ago, the producer has been responsible for some of the finest house music to emerge from Detroit in recent times. Interestingly, he's slightly modified his woozy and gently soul-flecked blueprint on this hotly anticipated debut album. For starters, many of the tracks - standouts "Paradise Valley" and "Knowledge of Selfie" included - feature live drums, played and recorded in his mother's basement. This rhythmic adjustment gives Broken Knowz a far looser and warmer feel than his previous work, in the process elevating his deliciously rich and musical deep house to a whole new level. In other words, it's an impressively assured and entertaining debut album.

  1. The Rotating Assembly - "Seasons Of My Life" (feat Billy Lo)
  2. Green Pickles - "Feedback" (feat Billy Lo & M Pittman)
Review: Sound Signature kick off the new year with a pleasing reissue of some smoky soul from Theo Parrish's outlet for his most jazzy tendencies. On "Seasons Of My Life" Billy Lo croons over a muted trumpet while a surprisingly rough stomp gets hammered out of a live kit. It's a dreamy, sunkissed jam with all the loose, free-flowing elements you would expect from something with Parrish's stamp on it. Marcellus Pittman helps out on "Feedback", as a sparser, meandering groove does the nasty with some restrained keys. For that Detroit beatdown flavour away from the dancefloor, this is as good as it gets.

Review: New from Sound Signature is "I Only Have Eyes For You", from the multi talented percussionist Jerrald James (aka Jerry The Cat). Jerry aptly demonstrates his own production prowess in covering the Flamingos' "I only Have Eyes For You". He smartly chose Genevieve Marantette to provide vocals on this piece, and she gives her best recorded performance to date.

Flowers EP (12")
Cat: SS 048. Rel: 08 Sep 18
  1. Andrew Ashong & Theo Parrish - "Flowers"
  2. Andrew Ashong - "Take It Slow"
  3. Andrew Ashong - "The Way She Moves" (short version)
Review: At first glance, the pairing of Forest Hill resident Andrew Ashong and Sound Signature boss Theo Parrish would seem strange. But the duo have worked together previously with the Ghanaian born vocalist (and supposed owner of a vinyl collection that would make most record shops look like a car boot sale) lending his soulful tones to Parrish's excellent nine minute plus translation of the Hot Chip and Spiritualised affiliated About Group. Whereas that collaboration was more about Ashong's voice being just one element of a production that was undoubtedly Parrish, the three tracks present on the Flowers EP look to showcase what a talent the Londoner is. Those trademark dust filled stacatto rhythms are present in the opening title track, but they never swamp Ashong's killer vocal delivery, while "Take It Slow" is bonafide D funk of the highest order. After the brutal, divisive nature of Theo's kung fu experimentalism on the Any Other Styles EP, these three tracks show him in a wholly new light and hopefully Parrish and Ashong will be making much more music together.

  1. Moon Circuitry (6:40)
  2. Escape On The Lodge Freeway (8:25)
Review: This year, Theo Parrish seems to be doing his best to breathe new life into the careers of broken beat-era producers and musicians. Having previously released an excellent EP from Dego and Kaidi Tatham on Sound Signature, his latest missive comes from one-time conscious hip-hop producer Ge ology and one-time go-to jazz keys-man Mark De Clive-Lowe. The latter's brilliant synthesizer and piano work is arguably the highlight of both tracks here. On the spacey, P-funk influenced space-house swing of "Moon Circuitry" he does his best impression of Herbie Hancock, while "Escape On The Lodge Freeway" boasts intricate jazz solos atop a slightly tougher, chunkier deep house groove. Both tracks are, of course, impeccable.

  1. The Gooch
  2. Zodiak
  3. Body Blow
Review:  been four years since Chicago producer Andres "Specter" Ordonez pitched up on Theo Parrish's Sound Signature label with the smoky, bleep-laden killer "Pipe Bomb". Here, he returns to the Detroit veteran's imprint, bringing with him three more slabs of fuzzy analogue oddness. "The Gooch" is the real killer, a 10-minute freakout that sounds like a jazz band making murky techno with just analogue machinery to play with - all wonky electronics, subtle acid and loose but relentless cymbals. The bolder "Zodiak" impresses with its 303-driven aggression, while "Body Blow" sounds like Hieroglyphic Being jamming with Buddy Miles. On Mars. That's gotta be good, right?

  1. Untitled (Chesney) (7:59)
  2. Mesosphere (5:33)
  3. Forest Floor (6:30)
  4. North Circular (6:01)
Review: Following a fine contribution to YAM's Youandmusic Volume 2 EP earlier in the year, Lewis "LT" Taylor pops up on one of his favourite labels, Rhythm Section International. Taylor has been described by label chief Bradley Zero as a "prodigal talent" and there's plenty of evidence to support that view on this debut EP proper. Opener "Untitled (Chesney)" is a wonderfully bouncy and sun-kissed chunk of Italian-influenced piano house, while "Menosphere" sees him wrap lusciously positive melodic motifs and loved-up synths around a chunky breakbeat house rhythm. Arguably even better is title track "Forest Floor", a sticky and humid, tropical breakbeat workout full of tribal percussion and glassy-eyed sunrise electronics. To round things off, Taylor delivers more feel-good, breakbeat-driven deep house positivity in the shape of "North Circular".

His most notable tracks can be found on labels like Planet E Communications, TRAX Records, King Street Sounds, Circus Company and Character. He returns to Ornaments with another slice of artful songwriting, ranging from classic deep house ("Blue Room"), Detroit inspired techno ("Efflorescence") and cavernous dub techno ("Iris"), through to acid inflected grooves as heard on "Older Wiser", New York style downbeat jazz of "Copa" and stunning soundtracks like on "December In New York"

Review: The latest no-nonsense EP on Mistress Recordings comes from rising star Look Like. Over the four tracks, the Drumpoet Community regular quietly joins the dots between analogue deep house, dusty electronic grooves, and the futurist ethos of classic Detroit techno. Opener "Shadow Groove" doffs a sizable cap to late '80s Larry Heard productions, while "You Dub" combines dreamy chord progressions, acid style electronics and crunchy drum machine hits. On the flip you'll find the ultra-deep shuffle, poignant synth-strings and curious vocal samples of "TY84" and the spacey, bleep-inspired techno hustle of EP standout "Control".

  1. City People - "It's All In The Groove" (10:37)
  2. 20 Below - "A Lil' Tribute To The Moody Black Keys" (7:28)
  3. 20 Below - "Jus' Nite Groovin'" (4:59)
Review: Motor City Drum Ensemble man Danilo Plessow believes that this split 12", first released on Manchester's Rainy City Music 20 years ago, is one of the finest deep house records ever to emerge from the UK (he's not alone, either - Theo Parrish and Jeremy Underground are also fans). For this official reissue, all three tracks have been re-mastered from the original DAT tapes. City People's ten-minute "It's All In The Groove", where delay-laden percussion hits and sparkling, Si Brad style synth flashes ride a deliciously deep, disco-house groove, kicks things off in fine style. The other two tracks are solo efforts from City People man Irfan Hussain; both "A Lil Tribute To The Moody Black Keys" and "Jus' Nite Groovin" sound like classic Chez Damier productions.

Review: At the third release on their deep house division Basic Channel keeps introducing new singers. Paul St Hilaire brings in a refreshing reggae flavour to the rather classic deep house set-up. Review: Thanks to the globe trotting "Trips" series in which they collaborate with local musicians in far-flung locations, Red Axes are clocking up plenty of air miles. Volume two in the series contains more exotic, cross-cultural treats, this time made in collaboration with Vietnamese musicians. They begin with the spacey dub disco shuffle of "Ho Chi Min", where ear-catching Vietnamese vocals and South East Asian string instruments ride a chunky groove, before stripping things back on the bass-heavy late night exoticism of "Hanoi". "Phu Quoc" sees them brilliantly chopping up, mangling and manipulating vocals and snaking solos over a druggy groove, while "Hue" is warm, deep, groovy and almost Balearic in its deliciously loved-up way.

  2. The Make Up
Review: After a break through 2012 with EPs on Dirt Crew, Murmur and Freerange, Detroit Swindle take a second bite out of their 2013 cherry with the Break Up to Make Up EP on new label Heist. The A-side is "The Break Up", a sidechaning rollercoaster of sampled, looped and filtered vocals that bounce of bit-staccato Rhodes, silky hats and tight drums. On the B-side is a deeper "The Break Up" featuring breathy, feminine vocals similar to Australian and Third Strike act The Tortoise. Deep and flowing house music for the dancefloor.
