7 Years & Three Quarters Of Albion (140 gram vinyl double 12")
Cat: ALB 010. Rel: 14 Oct 19
  1. Jordan Magee - "Semantics"
  2. Henry Hyde - "Forgot Your Name"
  3. Samuel Allot - "Isolate"
  4. Christian Jay - "Restive"
  5. TC80 - "Albion"

  7. Phil Evans - "Hazard"
  8. Christian Ab - "Starlight D-Lite"
Review: The lads behind Albion Records know a thing or two about where to look for fresh steps forwards in the minimal, house and techno scenes. After last year's Gab Jr release, they're finally back to hit number 10 with a double pack compilation that sets in stone what the label is all about. There's a lot to dig into here, but some of the standouts include the sharp and sneaky "Forgot Your Name" by Henry Hyde, the Boogizm-goes-electro freakery of Christian Jay's "Restive" and the swinging jazz surrealism of Phil Evans' "Hazard". With more than a little garage shuffle hovering over this release, it's set to be another huge one in all corners of the minimal tech house scene.

  1. Tee's 8
  2. Three Thousand Men
  3. Tentation
Review: Tomoki Tamura and Tuccillo are back together once again as Doublet, with both seasoned tech house champs having fun in the studio jamming out the kind of stripped back, heads down grooves you'd expect to hear them play out. "Tee's 8" is a cheeky A side jam with the kind of acid line that goes down easy and then works you from the inside out. "Three Thousand Men" has a slight dubby thread to it which sits comfortably amongst the sturdy groove of the drums, and then "Tentation" switches gears for a bright and melodic creation that skips around in funky syncopation without even needing to worry about a kick drum.

  2. Lessons (6:54)
  3. Twelvty (7:21)
  4. Twelvty (Kepler remix) (6:41)
Review: The Aesthetic label is steadily growing as yet another strong side to the Constant Sound empire, and they're sounding fit as a fiddle with this latest drop from Niko Maxen. "Aesthetic 04" leads in with "Calibans Dance", a swirling, dubbed out affair with intriguing percussive tones to add an intriguing edge to the stripped back house groove. "Lessons" has a heads down, twitchy demeanour it's impossible to resist, and then "Twelvty" summons up some elegant synth strokes that hover in between the shuffling beats. The latter provides more than enough inspiration for Kepler to deliver an astounding remix that plays around with bouncy arps and pointed house rhythms in his inimitable style.

  1. The Soul Feast (Drum dub) (6:49)
  2. The Soul Feast (acappella EFXS) (6:54)
Review: In 2009, two years after the original version appeared on Somi's debut album "Red Soil In My Eyes", Joaquin "Joe" Claussell and Brian Bacchus joined forces as Soul Feast to remix Fela Kuti cover "African Lady". A decade on, Claussell has decided to reissue the package's most potent and percussive moment, the layered "Drum Dub" on a tasty seven-inch single. While there are key elements of Somi's original version present - the killer bassline, some delay-laden horns and fleeting glimpses of guitar - the mix is dominated by layered Afro-house percussion. This time round, the mix comes backed with an "Acapella EFXS" version, which contains all of Somi's superb vocal and is closer in tone to the duo's 2009 club mix. Like the A-side, it's superb.

  4. M&M Vs Andrei Swipe - "Analog Express" (Don Carlos remix) (7:29)
Review: There's an undeniable air of quality that lingers over the 12"s emerging on 14th Level Of Paradise, the mysterious label presenting originals, edits and repressed tracks for true house devotees. First up is a little known track from Sasha Makin and Suntetic, given a shimmering polish by Don Carlos and Steven Perri to become a heavy funking masterpiece, before Joe Claussell drops in a percussive dub delight on Monday Michiru's "Higher". On the flip, Vincent Inc and LA get things pumping with the slow but chunky, jazz-licked "Red Room", before Carlos returns for another deep house reverie as he remixes M&M and Andrei Swipe's "Analog Express".

  1. Agera (10:17)
  2. I Don't Wonder (7:48)
  3. Ultrak (7:34)
Review: Priku's new diffusion series Atipic Lab has brought us some killer material of late, by some right heroes of the Rominimal scene such as Arapu, Vlad Arapasu and Cosmijn. The latest edition comes from the ever reliable Vincentiulian, who first appeared on the label back in 2016 with the brilliant Atipic 002 - which we consider a modern classic. Expectations are high, then, for ATIPICLAB 006 and he certainly didn't let us down. From the obtuse yet mesmerising bounce of A side cut "Agera", to the more straight ahead B side cuts such as "I Don't Wonder" which shows off Vincent's knack for crafty and infectious rhythm programming, and the funky afterhours groove of "Ultrak" with its smooth rolling bass.

Review: Jamie Jones has been busy in the studio after another busy summer lighting up Ibiza, because this is one of two new offerings this month. It finds the agenda-setting Welshman on his own Hot Creations and in collaboration with The Martinez Brothers. Between them this celebrated collective lay down "Bappi", all drilling bass and razor sharp hi hats that are deep but driving. Flip over for a "Warehouse Mix" which recalls old school Windy City basslines and pixelated chords lighting up the bare bones grooves.

  1. Bitter Sweet (7:10)
  2. C Track (5:56)
Review: Detroit producer Scott Grooves returns to his Modified Suede imprint with Bitter Sweet, following on from the jazz-driven Motor City funk of "The Journey". This 12" sees the underappreciated Grooves on typically excellent form; the title track offers a piece of dusty, subtle Detroit house, where fuzzy Rhodes piano are joined by jazzy string melodies and a mechanical groove in a similar manner to Kevin Reynolds' similarly slow burning "Liaisons", while "C Track" offers a sublime piece of rolling house whose urgent yet gentle piano chords are caught in a swell of bottom heavy bass and rattling hi-hats.

  2. Desert Sound Colony & Guava - "Gypsy Moth" (6:54)
  3. Budapest (7:43)
Review: British artist Desert Sound Colony appears outside of his brilliant Holding Hands imprint here with a new one for Scenic Route - a new London-based label and party run by Bryce's Brother, Jon Phonics and Sean OD. Real name Liam Wachs, his productions have gained support from a wide variety of DJs such as Midland, Raresh, Andrew Weatherall and Lena Willikens, and you can count his new EP "Cartogropher" as another guaranteed dancefloor killer. The A side houses the title track - a fierce, rolling, bass-heavy backroom dub, followed by the trippy and off-kilter UK vibe of "Gypsy Moth (feat. Guava)" plus deep minimalist concentration of "Budapest" on the flip.

Review: Overthink is a Barcelona based label run by Nicolas Etorena, who taps homeboy Luis Malon here for four cuts of wonky retro rave and techno shenanigans on the "Champions Fantasy EP". The man has appeared on labels like Slow Life and Opia in recent times, so you should already have an idea of what's to come: from the electro-fied alien funk of "Terrify", to straight ahead peak time bangers like "Is TLM" with its savage 303 squelch, nodding to classic Yorkshire sounds. Driving B side cut "Vincha For All" receives a bouncy rework by SUR main man Jorge Gamarra that'll get you staring right down into the vortex.

  1. El Senor De Los Cielos (15:09)
  2. Fresno (6:35)
  3. Cablung (7:44)
Review: Sahau is a quintet comprised of Bucharest scene hero Dan Andrei, with locals Paul Agripa (Ragrip) and Serban Goanta under their AK41 moniker - all highly respected DJs and producers within the Rominimal scene. The third collaborative effort on their Zimbru imprint and following up 2017's "As It Wasn't There EP", "Cielo EP" is awashed with mesmerising vibes from start to finish. The off-kilter broken beat hypnotism of opener "El Senor De Los Cielos" is as esoteric as you like over its meandering 15 minute duration, while B side "Fresno" is a deeper and groovier minimal funk effort which is perfect for getting weird at the afterhours. Closing cut "Cablung" is an introverted and bass-driven affair that takes a much darker and experimental turn but equally suited for one of those sleep deprived Sunday afternoon shenanigans.

  3. Late Run (Kirik remix) (6:45)
  4. Next Week (8:24)
Review: Alex Pervukhin has enjoyed a productive 2019. This rock solid four-tracker on Colours Of Crocus marks the Ukrainian producer's fourth single of the year, following similarly impressive outings on Recordeep, Hubble Recordings and his own Laconica imprint. It's an attractive and warming affair, with Pervukhin effortlessly fusing elements of late '90s UK tech-house and the dreamy, spacey end of the deep house spectrum. Opener "Late Run", whose melodic flourishes, tactile synth bass and intergalactic electronics are wonderfully immersive, is the benchmark, with Kirik's flipside remix offering a tougher and more hypnotic take on the same seductive elements. Elsewhere, "909's Dreams" is more driving but no less atmospheric and melodious, while "Next Week" is a fine chunk of drowsy late night hypnotism.

Review: Despite being one of London's premier dancefloor-focused fusionists of the last two decades, Simbad Stanislas has not released very many albums. In fact, "Collections" is only the soul and jazz loving producer's second full length outing, with his first, "Supersonic Revolution", dropping way back in 2007. This, then, is a long overdue excursion. It contains tracks recorded (but for the most part never released) between 2003 and 2017, and includes collaborations with a wide range of vocalists and fellow producers. Musically, it's as vibrant and addictive as you'd expect, delivering tracks that effortlessly join the dots between soul, hip-hop, jazz, broken beat, jazz-funk, deep house, two-step garage and much more besides.

Review: The unstoppable Cromby lets rip on Unknown To The Unknown. His first release on DJ Haus's U2TU motherlabel, he's gone in all rave guns blazing. "Cruising" is a thumping Detroit-edge acid meteor shower. Wave after wave of 303s and rising big-blast pads, there's some serious momentum in this track; just mix it in and watch it demolish. "Gigolo" shakes its money maker with a little more uplift as chords climb and chime throughout the mix, constantly reaching higher and higher. A little like Cromby's profile right now.

Review: Originally a white label promo, Mark Knight and Co. are finally letting this one out of the bag. A seriously classy and infectious record from the new UK duo Cashio, "Dancing (With Me)" is a record that's had everyone talking, including some of the worlds top DJs like Annie Mac and Danny Howard to name but a few. A proper, disco-fied funky house anthem (with infectious vocals) that harks back to the glory days of the late '90s popularised by Def Mix, Subliminal and Soulfuric et al - is this a comeback? With the Toolroom crew heading to ADE at the end of the month, we're sure this one will bang the party there, until the later part of 2019 and beyond!

  4. Fourth (4:47)
Review: It's been a while since we last heard from the Mellophonia label and its star attraction, A Vision Of Panorama, but now the producer known as Mikhail Khvasko is back with a new record that expands on the soft and silky Balearic house sound he established himself with across some wonderful EPs and 2016's "Aquafusion" album. The sun is still very much shining down on this new record, which leads in with the fittingly titled "Delicious Saw". Khvasko's whole sound is geared towards celebration of gorgeous synth tones, and so it goes here thanks to that seriously tasty sawtooth wave. "Lum" cools down the boogie bump of its predecessor for something more reflective, while "Euphoria" gets into an oh-so-sweet house funk that would sound at home on Strictly Jaz Unit. "Fourth" finishes the EP off with a seriously sticky bassline squelch and some effervescent piano lines - another melodic marvel on a record full of them.

  1. Dem Say Ah (Akoya Re Rub) (4:17)
  2. Dem Say Ah (7 Inch edit) (4:17)
Review: "Der Say Ah" has long been a banger on dance floors tuned into international sounds. It's the sort of bouncy afrobeat and sax-laced classic that has been fetching huge amounts online. DJs like Gilles Peterson and Nightmare on Wax have been playing it for yonks and now, after many years of it being out of print, it is back courtesy of Push The Fader. The Akoya Re-Rub mix here was mixed by Ben Kane who worked on D'Angelo's Black Messiah, so this sounds beyond good. The 7" version comes from DJ Spinna with extra keys from Ticklah, psyched out bass and extra dub feelings.

Review: Mainz-based house hooligan Butch teams up with good studio pal Christian Vogt (Yellow Tail/Rebirth) once again for their new thumper - a remix of Andy Gibbs of The Bee Gees' 1980 hit "Desire". Said to have been circulating for more than a year on selected USB sticks, it's finally available for all. The sexy and low slung main remix is sure to burn up any dancefloor, and is backed by a groovy and swing-fuelled dub version, a handy and functional drum tool and a nifty vocal tool too. It's what Gerd Janson & Co. best described themselves as "blue-eyed R&B house.. made to please and evoke those unifying and uplifting dancefloor moments".
