Review: One of the most hotly anticipated releases of the year has arguably been served well by the by now all so usual Covid delays. It certainly feels like the stars have aligned for Sydney Minksy-Sergeant and his band, and the good news is that the substance of this album is easily strong enough to live up to the growing snowball of hype that has preceded it. Every classic album needs a classic opening line, and "trapped inside a town, inside my mind", the first words you hear on the LP's opener 'Valleys', speaks volumes about who WMC are representing here - the lockdown generation of teens and 20-somethings left behind tom contemplate their existence in the bedrooms and bus shelters of smalltown Britain. Musically, it's the sound of a band who have grown up with club and indie and exude both, more by instinct than design, straddling Italo-disco and Fall-like lyrics on 'Valleys', sublime, sunny guitar pop on 'White Rooms & People', 'Angel' and 'Tomorrow' and darker, heavier industrial beats and crushing electro pressure on 'Teeth' and 'AAAA'. Believe the hype, at the very least this is one of the albums of the year and quite possibly much, much more.

Blue Monday (remastered)
Blue Monday (remastered) (heavyweight vinyl 12" in die-cut sleeve)
Cat: 019029 5665913. Rel: 02 Oct 20
  1. Blue Monday (7:30)
  2. The Beach (7:21)
Review: You might think that you could cop a copy of New Order's seminal hit 'Blue Monday' fairly easily and cheaply given its ubiquity over the years. But no, copies in good condition still fetch around 50 quid, so this remastered reissue is well worth a cop. The single's iconic bassline and twitchy synth modulations very much soundtrack a generation, if not an entire youth revolution, but still enliven any dance floor many years later. What's more, the de-humanised vocals will always provide real singalong joy. On the flip is a 'The Beach', which is drenched in echo and reverb and general sonic filth.

  6. Automatic (8:42)
Review: Given that Mildlife's 2018 debut album Phase was both rather brilliant and a rip-roaring commercial success, this hotly anticipated follow-up will get plenty of attention. And rightly so, because Automatic may well be even better than its illustrious predecessor. Musically, it features the same unique mix of vintage krautrock synths, jazz-funk instrumentation and enjoyably organic grooves, just this time round they've stepped it up another notch or two. The Aussie combo is in fine form throughout, dotting between the Steely Dan style warmth of 'Rare Air', the Brit Funk style weightiness of 'Vapour', the cosmic, art-rock influenced haziness of 'Downstream', the almost horizontal bliss of nine-minute epic 'Citations', the colourful live nu-disco goodness of 'Memory Palace' and the seductive sweetness of 'Automatic'.

Review: Demon Music's new Suede compilation spans the band's whole career and is presented no fewer than six sales of vinyl. The band's first era ran from 1993 to 2002 and took in five monstrously successful albums including their Mercury music prize-winning self-titled debut. Fans will argue the Dog Man Star follow up in 1994 was even better, and it sure was another commercial success, with the hit-packed Coming Up in 1996 another big one. Tracks from all these and more as well as some favourite b-sides and non album tracks also make the cut.

Review: To celebrate 40 years since its initial release, the Cure has decided to offer up a limited-edition, picture disc re-issue of their second album. Considered one of the now legendary band's most significant sets, Seventeen Seconds delivered a string of distinctive "gloom-scapes" - think low-slung post-punk bass and tight drums overlaid with glistening guitar motifs, occasional synthesizer sounds and Robert Smith's distinctive vocals - that fired the starting gun on what would become the goth-rock movement. The album proved popular at the time and provided the band with their first top 40 hit, 'A Forest'; all these years on it still sounds like the perfect distillation of the Cure's now trademark sound.

Review: "In Rainbows", Radiohead's seventh album, finally gets a physical release! It's one thing downloading this landmark album, but to actually hold this is something special. Not only do you get increased sound quality, but you also get the amazing artwork from Stanley Donwood. This album includes "Nude", a live favourite for many years that was originally written during the "OK Computer" sessions. More minimal that their "Kid A" period, "In Rainbows" does something that very few albums have done - its sound is distinct from previous Radiohead albums, but is still clearly Radiohead. Hail to the kings, they are back on top form. Get this album while you can.

BMG
Cat: 405053 8606324. Rel: 16 Oct 20
  1. Hear Me Out (2:39)

Review: Pixies' 'Hear Me Out' might be one of the most reassuring things we've heard so far this year. Unveiled back in early-September, when the threat of winter's dark nights was nought but a glint of vague concern in the eye of late-summer, the track is typically raw and rolling engine room garage rock business for the band, and proof they remain on very good form following their reformation at the beginning of this century.

At least we can rely on some things, right? A month or so on and finally the full album is ready to have a go at. In all honesty, by this point in a band's career - legends since 1986 - you probably don't need to know much about a record to decide on whether to invest. It's Pixies doing what they do best, and what they do best is usually exactly what the doctor ordered. Take that as you will.

Review: No mater how many times you hear it, you just cannot resist air drumming and foot stomping to Joy Division's most famous hit. It's a track that resonates through the ages, and when you know the story of lead singer Ian Curtis it always takes on extra sombre resonance. Here it gets a special remaster and is served up with a special Pennie Version which sends the drums into overdrive and mad echo and distortion all make the track that bit more frenzied, intense and essential. The short but sweet, hard hitting post punk banger "These Days" is also included on this heavyweight 12".

Review: Future Islands newest album As Long As You Are is a work that readdresses some of their past while also looking to the future and a new sound. This process of redemption comes as drummer Mike Lowry officially joins the band as a songwriter to add to the foundational trio of William Cashion, Samuel T Herring and Gerrit Whelmers. The synth wave sound the band is famous for remains and is as bright and joyous as it has been in their nearly 15 year history. Heavenly choruses also make it last long in the memory and sure to win new fans as well as retain the old.

Cat: MOV 12011. Rel: 08 Oct 20
  1. Morningrise (4:20)
  2. She Calls (5:36)
  3. Losing Today (4:59)
Review: 'Morningrise' is considered by many to be the archetypal shoegaze track. It's certainly Slowdive's ultimate track, a monumental helping of searing riff echoes, haunting white noise and hushed, floating vocals. It's more than enough to send a chill down your spine and leave hairs standing on end even without the other two songs offering support on this timeless EP.

All three tracks are taken from the band's double disc debut, Just For A Day, which itself easily ranks among the finest albums of the early-1990s. In contrast to the opener, 'She Calls' reveals a slightly tougher, more distorted take on things, with more than a subtle hint of melancholia in the air, while 'Losing Today' brings meditative moods to finish the triptych on a deep and brooding cinematic note.

Review: Twenty years ago it sounded like an oddly poignant evocation of pre-millennial tension. Two decades later it stands as an eerily prescient glimpe into the technological alienation and dislocation of of a new era. Yet more importantly, OK Computer is no more or less than a sparkling, dramatic and moving collection of songs that haven't lost any of their impact in the interim. The sound of a band stubbornly refusing to follow up the stadium-strafing stylings of its predecessor The Bends - and instead bursting headlong into experimentation and wild creativity -is portrayed in still more vivid colours by the alarmingly strong collection of out-takes and B-sides collected herein, Yet there's no getting away from the chill and spark that marked out OK Computer from everything surrounding it in the post-Britpop malaise, and continues to do so in the pre-Brexit counterpart.

Review: The world was very different in 1992, but some of the greatest musical moments from that year stand the test of time. Just take Polly Jean Harvey's staggering debut - the making of a musical icon and one of the era's finest examples of songwriting. It still sounds exceptional and its messages still resonate, lifting the woke-washed veil of our age in one fell swoop, laying bare the fact that many toxic attitudes prevail. It's rock music, but that's hardly the point. What matters isn't so much what's being played, but how and what's being said. Delivered with an air of Pixies and nod to Patti Smith, written in the wake of a relationship imploding, our introduction to Harvey remains vital as ever. A refusal to accept simplistic, patriarchal views of womanhood and femininity, or indeed simplistic patriarchal views of anything, the record's razor sharp observations, cunning wit and deft ability to reference but feel original is remarkable.

Review: RECOMMENDED
They say good things come in small packages, or at least some of the time, and at just eight tracks long Andy Bell's spectacular The View From Halfway Down is certainly proof. Ride guitarist and GLOK producer, here the musical maestro gives us the big picture, calling on a range of styles to create a jangly, hallucinatory indie that's as familiar as Madchester and fresh enough to make you think none of that era ever happened.

Or at least that's certainly the case with super-charged psyche opener 'Love Comes In Waves'. The next track, 'Indica', doesn't exactly contest our theory, either, easing the vibe with a loose, open breakbeat and hypnotic groove. By now you're hooked, so we probably don't even need to mention the likes of delicate lo-fi acoustic number, 'Cherry Cola', or the warm layers of synth on closer 'Heat Haze On Weyland Road'.

Review: What is there left to say to say about The Stone Roses' eponymous debut album that hasn't already been said already. Most of the songs here have become anthems for not one but several generations, from the bouncy opening moments of 'I Wanna Be Adored' to the elongated jam that brings 'I Am The Resurrection' (and the LP) to a close. For what is the iconic album for the indie-dance movement, it's surprisingly devoid if electronics, but the lethal combination of Reni's drums and Mani's bass playing create an irresistible foundation of grooviness, even in the more laid back moments like 'Shoot You Down' and 'Bye Bye Badman'. Steeped in the hazy 60's psychedelic pop of The Byrds and the 70's funk of Sly & The Family Stone, yet executed with a northern grit and football terrace singalong sensibility, this is the album that closed the 1980's and then went on to rule the landscape of indie rock for the next 30 years.

Atmosphere (remastered) (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: 019029 5274603. Rel: 17 Jul 20
  1. Atmosphere (4:10)
  2. She's Lost Control (4:45)
Review: All of Joy Division's biggest hits have been remastered and reissues by Warner this month. This particular heavyweight wedge of 12" vinyl offers "Atmosphere", which interestingly enough was first put in March 1980 by the Sordide Sentimental label as a France-only single under the title "Licht und Blindheit". Like "Transmission" or "Love Will Tear Us Apart", it is an essential tune with a real moodiness in the production rom Martin Hamnett. Curtis's vocals have a sense of finality to them that was to prove all too real when he committed suicide not long after recording it. 1979's "She's Lost Control" is an other archetypal, angular groove with the jittery drums that made the band so essential.
