Review: The Clean are one of the most important indie bands to ever come out of New Zealand. Their EP 'Boodle Boodle Boodle' (1981), recorded on a four-track, had an instant lo-fi appeal and became the Flying Nun label's first major success. They were shaped by the likes of Syd Barrett, Velvet Underground and The Stooges and have gone on to influence the likes of Pavement and Yo La Tengo. The band were on hiatus for the majority of the 80s, but came back to release three albums in the 90s and two in the 00s. This is their second album and the first time this title has been in print on vinyl since its initial release. With more budget to record than when they were cutting their teeth in the early 80s, it's a higher fi record and of their post-reunion releases, this is the closest in feel to their early material. 'Linger Longer' is a haunting piano-led cut full of poignance and psychedelic feel. 'Secret Place' shines a spotlight on The Clean's iconic stripped back drum style and 'Something I Need' has a Lou Reed and Mick Jagger feel to the vocals as folk-y acoustic instrumentation prevails beautifully underneath. A staggering band.

Review: English singer-songwriter Anna B Savage wrote this album as "a love letter to a man and to Ireland." The City Slang-signee recently relocated from Britain to Donegal, Ireland, having initially made the jump across the Irish sea to study a master's in music in Dublin. The Irish connection is palpable throughout, with song titles 'Donegal' and 'Mo Cheol Thu'' a case in point and her collaborators rooted in the underground music community there. Producer John 'Spud' Murphy is famed for his Lankum connection. And credited musicians from the Emerald Isle include Anna Mieke, Kate Ellis, Caimin Gilmore from Crash Ensemble and Cormac MacDiarmada from Lankum. Anna Mieke is a featured guest vocalist on the beautiful 'Agnes'. It's a song that blends of mind-bogglingly imaginative instrumentation and arrangement with stark, beautiful folk. Savage has ventured into highly ambitious terrain on this album and has delivered a commanding performance in doing so.

The hazy, expansive production feels perfectly at home on this format, with the "fog" vinyl subtly matching the hazy warmth and depth of the pair's intricate arrangements. From the shimmering guitar lines that drift through the opener to the hypnotic rhythms that define the album's centrepieces, every element is given space to resonate by Dan Lissvik and Rasmus Hagg. Review: The Verve are up there with the Smiths in terms of bands you wish would still be together but personal relationships within the band make it appear next to impossible that they'll be resurrected. Fortunately, they're still putting out releases to commemorate their legacy. This is an updated version of their 2004 best-of release. Celebrating 20 years since it came out on CD, and now on vinyl for the first time, new features include material from the band's 2008 reunion album, Forth - the banging 'Love Is Noise' and majestic 'Rather Be' - as well as the eight-and-a-half-minute version of their second single 'She's A Superstar' (1992). The band were into more psychedelic dream pop and shoegaze-y sounds at that time. It was later that they would venture into leaner songwriting and pen hits such as 'Lucky Man' and 'Sonnet', which still to this day are among the finest songs released by any band ever.

Review: It's been a missing artefact for years. It's a travesty that this compilation hasn't been on vinyl until now, but The Verve have set things straight in time for its 20th anniversary. Even though The Verve were only together for a relatively brief time (1990 - 1999 and 2007-2009) they left behind a catalogue of untouchable songs. 'Sonnet', Lucky Man' and 'The Drugs Don't Work' are all bangers, but that's just scratching the surface of what they were capable of. They're a band of incredible breadth. In their early years, they were more psychedelic and leant into sonic wig outs, led by the inimitable genius of guitar player Nick McCabe. Meanwhile, as Richard Ashcroft neared his departure from the band and set out on a solo career, their material got a lot more song-based and they would be reframed as a Britpop group. The addition of the eight-and-a-half-minute version of their second single 'She's A Superstar' (1992) on this version of the album for the first time, helps to emphasise their shoegaze-y legacy. Meanwhile, we're reminded how great the songs of their reformation period are with 'Love Is Noise' and 'Rather Be', which is the other additional feature for this anniversary release.

Review: If there's anything Yo La Tengo have in spades, it's a superb music taste. This collection of outtakes and demos guides you through the inspired moments of creativity that they share. 'Cast A Shadow' covers K Records head honcho's group Beat Happening brilliantly. 'Speeding Motorcycle' goes one further - it has the actual Daniel Johnston featuring on it as well as being a cover. The latter came from his fifth self-released cassette tape, Yip/Jump Music. There's also a Ramones, Wire and John Cale cover. We think you get our point - astounding references. Of their own material, 'Sunsquashed' - a 26-minute jam that emphasizes their experimental and improvisational nature is a must. Free from the shackles of producing an album in the traditional sense, what you end up with is a fantastic and imaginative collection, which hammers home just how brilliant Yo La Tengo are for indie rock.

Review: New wave/synth pop artist Thomas Dolby is on extrovert mode here on his joyous, funky third studio album. Originally released in 1988, the album didn't fare particularly well commercially, at least compared to his 1982 hit 'She Blinded Me With Science', but the sheer inventiveness on display here makes it an underrated gem. The slap bass-laden single 'Hot Sauce' isn't shy in its use of light double entendre and when you think you have it pinned down musically, a Spaghetti Western interlude appears and there's a salsa outro. Elsewhere, on 'My Brain Is Like A Sieve' reggae and sophisti-pop collide to stunning effect and the tongue-in-cheek hit 'Airhead' shows off his David Bowie-esque pop baritone, whilst showering us in a stylistic stew.
